How to Retake a Pregnancy Test for the Most Accurate Result

Retake the test with a new, unexpired kit, using first-morning urine if you are testing early, and follow that kit’s timing instructions exactly. Home tests are generally most reliable from the first day of a missed period. If the result is negative but your period still does not start, repeat the test after several days to one week. Contact a healthcare professional after repeated negative results, mixed results, or continuing concern.

When to retake a pregnancy test after a negative result

The right interval depends mainly on when you tested. A negative result taken before the expected period, or just as the period becomes due, is less definitive than a negative taken later. Early in pregnancy, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) rises quickly; Mayo Clinic reported in 2026 that hCG doubles every two to three days. Waiting several days gives a possible early pregnancy more time to produce detectable hCG.

If your period is late

If your period has not started, Mayo Clinic advises repeating the test in a few days or within one week. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) likewise says a negative test can be repeated after several days. Use a fresh kit and repeat the complete procedure rather than re-reading the first test.

If you do not know when your period was due

The NHS advises testing at least 21 days after the last unprotected sex when the expected period date is unknown. Testing earlier can miss a pregnancy because ovulation and implantation do not occur on exactly the same schedule for everyone.

If the first test was invalid

A missing control line or control symbol means the test did not work. Treat it as an invalid test, not as a negative result. Use another kit and repeat the test from the beginning.

How to retake the test: an exact procedure

  1. Get a new kit. Check the expiration date before opening it. Do not reuse the first test or rely on a kit past its stated date.
  2. Choose an appropriate time. For the best chance of detecting an early pregnancy, test from the first day of a missed period. If you cannot identify that date, wait until at least 21 days after the last unprotected sex.
  3. Decide whether to use first-morning urine. First-morning urine is usually more concentrated and can contain more hCG, which is useful when you are testing early. The NHS states that urine collected at any time of day can also be used when the product instructions are followed.
  4. Read the package method before collecting the sample. Depending on the kit, you may urinate directly on an absorbent tip, dip a strip into a clean urine cup, or add drops to a test well.
  5. Use the specified amount. Follow the package directions for the number of seconds, drops, or sample volume. Substituting your own timing or amount can make the result difficult to interpret.
  6. Set a timer. Read the test only during the manufacturer’s stated reading window. Do not interpret it before the minimum time has elapsed, and do not treat a later change as a valid result after the maximum read time.
  7. Record what you saw. Note the date, approximate time, and whether the control line or symbol appeared. This is useful if you need to explain changing results to a healthcare professional.
  8. Take the next step based on the result. If it is negative and your period remains absent, repeat after several days to one week. If results conflict or concern continues, contact a healthcare professional.

Should you use first-morning urine?

Usually, yes, when you are retesting early or after a borderline negative. Urine accumulated overnight is often more concentrated, so it may contain a higher hCG concentration than a sample collected after substantial fluid intake during the day. The FDA says, “You can improve your chances for an accurate result by using your first morning urine for the test.”

First-morning collection is not an absolute requirement. The NHS says pregnancy tests can use urine from any time of day when the instructions are followed. If you test later, follow the kit’s directions and avoid changing the sample volume or read time. A later-day test that is negative very early in the testing window may be worth repeating with first-morning urine.

Why a pregnancy test can be negative when you are pregnant

Testing too early

The most common timing problem is testing before enough hCG has accumulated in urine. A test taken before the expected period, or immediately when it is due, can be negative even though pregnancy is present. A later test may detect the rising hormone.

Later ovulation or implantation

Ovulation and implantation do not happen on an identical timetable in every cycle. The Office on Women’s Health notes that variation in implantation timing can make an early test falsely negative. A calendar estimate of the period can therefore be off even when the test is used correctly.

Diluted urine

Large amounts of fluid can make urine less concentrated. When hCG is still low, a diluted sample may fall below the test’s detection threshold. First-morning urine can reduce this particular source of uncertainty.

Incorrect handling or timing

Using the wrong sample amount, failing to follow the specified dip or drop time, reading before the minimum time, or interpreting a test after the maximum read window can produce an invalid or misleading observation. The control line or symbol must appear for the test to be considered operational.

What to do with each possible result

A clear positive result

Follow the product’s instructions for interpreting a positive display or line pattern. If you need confirmation, contact a healthcare professional. A clinician can decide whether a blood test or another evaluation is appropriate.

A clear negative result

If your period has not arrived, wait several days to one week and test again. A negative result is less conclusive when it was obtained early. If a second test is negative and you still have no period, contact a healthcare professional for advice.

Two tests that disagree

Mixed results warrant professional advice rather than repeated visual interpretation of the same tests. Bring or describe the results, the dates you tested, and whether each test showed its control line or symbol. A healthcare professional may use a blood test or other evaluation to clarify the situation.

No control line or symbol

Discard the invalid test and use a new kit. Do not classify an absent control indicator as either positive or negative.

Choosing a home pregnancy test for a retest

Different kits can use different collection methods and displays. The important comparison is not whether the package looks more advanced, but whether you can use it correctly within the right timing window.

Feature What to check What is established
Timing window When the instructions say the test can be used relative to the expected period Home tests are generally most reliable from the first day of a missed period; test at least 21 days after the last unprotected sex if the due date is unknown.
Analytical sensitivity The hCG level the manufacturer says the test can detect Specific comparative sensitivity values are not established here; do not assume a marketing number makes an early test definitive.
Result display Lines, symbols, or a digital reading A digital display may be easier to read, but the available evidence does not show that digital tests are inherently more accurate.
Collection method Direct stream, dip strip, or drops into a test well Use the method, sample amount, and timing specified for that kit.
Tests per package How many fresh tests are included Package quantity varies and is not stated for a specific product here.
Expiration date The date printed on the package or test Use a new, unexpired kit for the retest.
Instruction quality Clear sample, timing, and result diagrams Choose instructions you can follow precisely; correct handling is central to a usable result.

A digital format can help if line interpretation is difficult, but it should be treated as a readability choice, not proof of greater accuracy. Timing, urine concentration, and correct handling have the larger practical effect supported by the cited guidance.

How to avoid common retesting mistakes

  • Do not reuse a test. A used strip or cassette is not a second measurement.
  • Do not use an expired kit. Check the date before opening the package.
  • Do not read outside the stated window. Set a timer and disregard changes seen after the maximum read time.
  • Do not substitute instructions between formats. A strip, midstream test, and test-well cassette can require different sample amounts and contact times.
  • Do not treat an invalid test as negative. Without the control line or symbol, repeat with another kit.
  • Do not let an early negative end the evaluation. If the period remains absent, repeat after several days to one week.
  • Do not assume a digital display is more accurate. Its main possible advantage is easier reading.
  • Do not rely on a calendar estimate alone. If the expected period is unknown, use the NHS 21-day timing rule after the last unprotected sex.

When to contact a healthcare professional

Arrange professional advice after a second negative test when your period still has not started, after mixed results, or whenever concern persists despite home testing. Tell the clinician when you tested, whether you used first-morning urine, what the test displayed, and whether the control indicator appeared. Depending on the situation, a clinician may use a blood test or another evaluation rather than relying on another home test alone.

Home testing is a timing-sensitive screening step. A negative result obtained very early does not carry the same certainty as a negative result obtained after the missed period and an appropriate interval for hCG to rise.

A practical retesting schedule

Situation Recommended next action
Negative test before the expected period Wait until the first day of the missed period, then test again with a new kit.
Negative test on or just after the expected period If bleeding does not begin, repeat in several days to one week.
Expected period date unknown Test at least 21 days after the last unprotected sex.
Invalid test with no control line or symbol Repeat immediately with a new, unexpired kit.
Second negative and still no period Contact a healthcare professional.
Positive and negative tests in the same episode Contact a healthcare professional for clarification.

What accuracy depends on most

For a retest to answer the question as well as a home urine test can, four conditions need to line up: enough time must have passed for hCG to rise, the urine sample must be suitable, the kit must be within its expiration date, and the procedure must match the package instructions. First-morning urine can improve detection when hCG is low, but it cannot compensate for an expired kit or an incorrectly timed reading.

The FDA, NHS, Mayo Clinic, MedlinePlus, and the Office on Women’s Health all emphasize correct timing and use. Their guidance supports repeating a negative test after several days when the period has not arrived, rather than treating one early negative as conclusive.
