Use Restrict when you want to quietly reduce unwanted contact, Block when you need a firm interaction barrier, and Report when content or an account may violate Instagram’s rules. Restrict sends that person’s comments into a review state and moves their direct messages to Message Requests. Block is more comprehensive and Instagram may offer to cover other accounts they have or create. Reporting asks Instagram to review a specific post, message, comment, or account; it is separate from controlling whether that person can contact you.
Instagram changes labels and menu layouts, so use the current prompts shown in your app. The operational paths below reflect the controls and entry points documented by Meta, while avoiding assumptions about a particular phone, region, or app version.

Choose the control that matches the problem
These features solve different problems. Restrict and Block are interaction controls. Report is a request for platform review. Hidden Words, Limits, and tag or mention settings are broader filters for recurring patterns.

A practical rule is to separate the two decisions: first decide whether the person should be able to interact with you, then decide whether Instagram should review the material. You can use Restrict or Block and still Report the relevant content.

What Restrict does
Restrict is designed for situations where you want less disruption without making the interaction as visibly final as a block. Instagram’s October 2019 feature announcement describes three entry points: a comment, the Privacy area in Settings, or the person’s profile.
Comments from a restricted account
After you restrict someone, comments they leave on your posts are initially visible only to that person. You can open the comment and choose whether to view it for yourself, approve it so others can see it, delete it, or leave it unapproved. Because the comment is held for your decision, you do not receive comment notifications for those comments.
Direct messages from a restricted account
Messages from the restricted person go to Message Requests rather than your normal inbox and do not trigger notifications. You can open the request and read it, but the sender cannot see when you have read the message or when you are active on Instagram. Restrict therefore reduces the pressure to answer immediately while keeping a channel available for you to inspect.

- From a comment: open the controls for the person’s comment on one of your posts and select the Restrict option if it appears.
- From the person’s profile: open their profile, open the account-options menu, and choose Restrict from the current list of actions.
- From privacy settings: open Instagram’s Settings, enter the Privacy area, and use the Restrict control presented there to find or select the account.
Labels and placement can differ by app version. If a menu does not match these descriptions, use the account or comment options attached to the interaction and follow Instagram’s current on-screen wording.
When Restrict is the better fit
- You want comments held for approval rather than automatically displayed.
- You want messages separated from your main inbox and notifications.
- You need distance from someone you know but do not want to announce a hard cutoff.
- You are dealing with low-level provocation and want control over what reaches your audience.
Restrict is not a request for Instagram to judge whether the person broke a rule. If a comment or message is abusive, threatening, hateful, or otherwise appears to violate Instagram’s policies, use Report as well.

What Block does
Block is the stronger boundary when your priority is to stop interaction rather than quietly filter it. Meta says Instagram may let you block the person’s other accounts they already have or may create. Treat that as an option Instagram can present during the blocking flow, not as a guarantee that every alternate account will be identified.
What the blocked person is told
Meta’s Safety Center says people are not notified when they are blocked. They may nevertheless infer that a block occurred if they can no longer interact with your account, so “no notification” should not be read as “undetectable.”

How to block someone
- Open the person’s profile or the account-options menu attached to the interaction you want to stop.
- Choose Block and read the choices Instagram presents.
- If Instagram offers to block additional accounts that person has or may create, select the option that matches your goal.
- Confirm the action using the current prompt.
The exact wording and number of choices can change. If you are blocking from a comment, message, or another surface rather than the profile, open that item’s options and follow the same current Block prompt.
When Block is the better fit
- You do not want the account to continue contacting you through ordinary Instagram interactions.
- A person is repeatedly evading softer boundaries.
- You are concerned about multiple accounts connected to the same person and Instagram offers the additional-account choice.
- You prefer a clear safety boundary over a quiet moderation workflow.
Blocking manages contact; it does not by itself ask Instagram to review a policy violation. Report harmful material separately when a rules review is warranted.
How to report harmful content or an account
Use Report when the material or account appears to violate Instagram’s rules and you want the platform to review it. The report can concern a post, reel, story, comment, message, or account, depending on which report option is attached to the item in your app.

Report from the relevant item
- Open the content or account that concerns you.
- Open its account-options or content-options menu.
- Select Report and choose the reason that best matches what you are seeing.
- Follow the current prompts to submit the report.
Meta’s Safety Center explains that reported content is reviewed and that material found to violate policy is removed. That description establishes the purpose of reporting, not a guaranteed result or a fixed response time. Instagram’s available categories and follow-up screens can change, so use the live choices shown in your app rather than relying on an old screenshot or a memorized sequence.

Choose based on the outcome you need:
- Report only: use this when platform review is the main objective and you do not need to change your own contact settings immediately.
- Block only: use this when the immediate problem is unwanted contact and the material does not appear to require a rules review.
- Report and Block: use both when you want Instagram to assess harmful material and you also want the account stopped from contacting you.
- Report and Restrict: use both when you want the material reviewed but prefer to filter the person’s future comments and messages instead of making the strongest cutoff.
Reporting is tied to the selected content or account. Restricting or blocking is tied to your interaction boundary, so neither action substitutes for the other.
Use Hidden Words for recurring comments and message requests
Hidden Words is intended for potentially harmful comments and message requests that match the filters you configure. It is useful when the problem is a repeated pattern rather than one identifiable account. Because the filter works across categories of language or requests, it can reduce exposure before you have to review each item manually.
Meta reported in 2022 that people with more than 10,000 followers who enabled Hidden Words for comments saw an average of 40% fewer comments that might be offensive. That figure is Meta’s own reported result for that population and setting; it is not an independent evaluation and does not promise the same reduction for every account.
Use Hidden Words alongside, not instead of, a report when a specific comment appears to violate policy. A filter can keep a comment out of view while a report asks Instagram to assess the underlying conduct.

Use Limits for bursts of unwanted interaction
Limits addresses a different pattern: a sudden wave of comments or message requests from people who do not follow you or who followed you recently. Meta describes Limits as able to hide those comments and requests. This makes it useful when the unwanted activity is arriving from a group or a surge of new accounts rather than from one established contact.
Because Limits is based on follow status and recency, it is a broader control than Restrict. It can reduce a burst without requiring you to identify and manage each account individually. For a known person who keeps contacting you, Restrict or Block remains the more targeted choice.
Narrow tags and mentions when unwanted references are the issue
Meta also provides controls that let you narrow who may tag or mention you. These settings address unwanted references to your account, which may continue even when comments and direct messages are not the main problem. Review the tag and mention controls in the Privacy area and choose the narrowest audience that still fits how you use Instagram.
Tag and mention controls do not submit a policy report and do not replace a block. If a tag or mention is part of harassment or another rule violation, report the relevant item and apply the interaction control you need.

- Identify the immediate harm. Is the issue one comment, a message, an account, a flood of requests, or unwanted tags and mentions?
- Decide whether the platform should review it. If the material appears to break Instagram’s rules, use the Report option attached to that material or account.
- Set your contact boundary. Choose Restrict for quiet filtering or Block for the strongest available interaction barrier.
- Check for a broader pattern. Use Hidden Words for recurring harmful language, Limits for bursts from non-followers or recent followers, and tag or mention controls for unwanted references.
- Follow the current prompts. Instagram changes menus and availability; if the action is not where an older guide says it should be, open the relevant content or account menu and use the live option shown there.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using Restrict when you need a complete cutoff
Restrict is deliberately a filter, not the strongest barrier. The person’s comments and messages are managed differently, but the feature is intended to reduce unwanted interaction rather than end it outright. Choose Block when stopping contact is the priority.
Blocking when you also need policy review
A block changes your interaction boundary. It does not, by itself, ask Instagram to evaluate whether a post, comment, message, or account violates the rules. Submit a separate report from the relevant item when review is needed.
Assuming the additional-account option catches everyone
Instagram may offer to block other accounts the person has or may create. The option is not a promise that every alternate account will be recognized, so continue to use the appropriate account-level controls if another account contacts you.
Expecting old menu paths to match today’s app
The documented Restrict entry points are a comment, the Privacy area in Settings, and the person’s profile. Other screens and labels may move. Use the current in-app prompts and Instagram’s own help surfaces when your interface differs.
Treating filtering as proof that content was removed
Hidden Words, Limits, and Restrict control what reaches your view or audience. They do not establish that Instagram has removed material for a policy violation. Only a submitted report puts the selected content or account into the platform-review process described by Meta.
What to expect after you act
With Restrict, check Message Requests when you want to review new messages from that person, and inspect comments on your posts if you want to approve, delete, or ignore them. The restricted person cannot see your activity status or whether you have read their messages.
With Block, Instagram does not send the person a blocking notification. If the blocking flow offered an additional-account choice, that choice applies according to the scope Instagram described in the prompt; it should not be treated as universal detection of every account.
With Report, Instagram’s stated process is review followed by removal when content violates policy. The available report reasons, menus, and feedback screens may vary, so rely on the confirmation and follow-up information shown in your app rather than assuming a particular status screen.

Keeping the controls understandable
Think of the features as layers:
- Personal boundary: Restrict or Block.
- Platform escalation: Report.
- Pattern filtering: Hidden Words or Limits.
- Account visibility controls: Tag and mention settings.
Applying the layer that matches the problem avoids two common extremes: using a report when you only needed to stop contact, or using a block when the wider community-facing content also deserves platform review. When the same person or pattern continues, reassess the boundary and add the broader filter that fits the new behavior.
