Restrict a GPU server by removing unnecessary public exposure, placing the host behind a private network or identity-aware access path, and then enforcing separate rules for network reachability, firewall ports, SSH, and each application. A VPN supplies a route; it does not by itself authorize a user or make SSH, Jupyter, an inference API, or a scheduler available.
What “restricted access” should mean
A secure design answers three different questions for every connection:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Can the device reach the GPU host? A private mesh, private subnet, site-to-site VPN, client VPN, bastion, or identity-aware forwarding service provides the path.
- Is this source allowed to reach this port? Network policy, cloud firewall or security group, and the host firewall should allow only the required users, devices, networks, and ports.
- Will the destination service accept the connection? SSH keys or policies, application login, API authentication, and service-level authorization remain necessary after the network permits traffic.
These layers are independent. A device can be connected to a private network yet be denied access to port 22. Conversely, a firewall can permit a port while no SSH daemon, web server, inference endpoint, monitoring agent, or scheduler is listening. Tailscale’s connection guidance states that network connectivity does not run a service on the destination; the service must exist and be configured separately.
For AI infrastructure, private access is the safer baseline. NVIDIA’s Requirements for AI Clouds v2.2 says direct access from the public internet or general corporate networks must be blocked and access should be provided through a hardened bastion.

Choose the access architecture
Use the option that matches where the GPU host lives, how users connect, and who will operate the gateway or bastion.
| Approach | Best fit | What it provides | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed private mesh VPN | Users and hosts spread across clouds, offices, labs, or home networks | Identity and device policies can restrict which people and devices reach particular servers and ports without exposing public SSH | Every user device needs a client or the network needs routing; host firewall and SSH or application authorization still apply |
| Cloud private subnet plus bastion | A GPU VM in one cloud network with a central ingress point | The GPU VM can have no public IP; a firewall can allow SSH only from the bastion | The bastion is a high-value, externally reachable component that must be hardened, monitored, patched, and tightly limited |
| Identity-aware TCP forwarding | A cloud-native access path supported by the provider | An identity-controlled intermediary can forward TCP connections to an internal-only VM | Cloud identity permissions and firewall rules must both be correct; the method is provider-specific |
| Site-to-site or client VPN | An existing office, lab, or cloud private network | Private routing to GPU hosts without a public SSH endpoint | VPN membership does not replace host or service authorization; routes, DNS, ports, and user/device policy need verification |
Compare designs on five practical criteria: whether the GPU host has any public exposure, how narrowly users, groups, devices, and ports can be scoped, how quickly access can be revoked and audited, whether a bastion or VPN gateway must be operated, and how well the design fits the existing cloud or on-premises network.
Inventory every entry point before changing the network
Write down each way a person, workload, or monitoring system needs to reach the server. Do not assume SSH on port 22 is the only sensitive path.

- Inference APIs and model-serving endpoints.
- Training or job-scheduler interfaces.
- Monitoring, metrics, and alerting ports.
- Cloud management agents or administrative interfaces.
- Internal storage, license, database, or directory connections required by workloads.
For each entry point, record the source identities or subnets, destination hostname or address, port and protocol, required users or service accounts, and whether access is interactive, automated, or time-limited. Remove entries that have no current owner. This inventory becomes the basis for network grants and firewall rules.
Implementation sequence
1. Select the private path
Choose a managed private mesh, a private cloud subnet reached through a bastion, an identity-aware forwarding feature, or a site-to-site/client VPN. For a distributed team, a private mesh can express user, device, host, and port policy in one control plane. For a single cloud network, a private subnet with a hardened bastion or provider forwarding service may be simpler to operate.
2. Remove unnecessary public exposure
Remove the GPU VM’s public IP or public ingress where the chosen architecture permits it. Delete broad internet firewall rules rather than merely hiding the service behind an additional port. If a public entry point is unavoidable, expose only the hardened bastion or gateway, not the GPU host itself.

Google Cloud’s secure VM guidance describes a bastion as an external-facing point of entry into a network containing private instances. Its recommended pattern limits the bastion’s source CIDRs and permits SSH to the private target only from that bastion. NVIDIA’s AI-cloud requirement similarly calls for blocking direct public and general-corporate access and using a hardened jump host.

3. Define deny-by-default network policy
Start with no source-to-destination permissions and add only documented flows. Tailscale’s GPU infrastructure guidance uses this model: grants are deny-by-default, so traffic is blocked unless a grant explicitly permits the source and destination pair.
Separate users and machines by function. For example, inference operators may need the inference endpoint, while a training group may need SSH and a monitoring port but not the inference service. Use distinct tags or equivalent groups for inference servers, training nodes, monitoring systems, administrators, and automation accounts. Grant the smallest set of ports each group needs.
4. Constrain cloud firewalls or security groups
Apply the same least-privilege design at the cloud layer. Google Cloud documents firewall rules that restrict traffic to specified sources and ports. AWS EC2 documentation recommends security groups and private-subnet patterns for controlling instance traffic. A cloud rule should identify the approved source range, destination instance or tag, protocol, and port; avoid broad rules that admit an entire internet or corporate address space when a bastion, VPN range, or identity-aware path is available.
5. Add the host firewall
Keep a host-level firewall even when the cloud firewall or VPN policy is narrow. It provides a second boundary if a cloud rule is changed accidentally or a private-network identity is compromised. Allow only the ports in the inventory, restrict administrative ports to the management path, and keep monitoring or service-to-service ports limited to their collectors or peers.
6. Configure SSH and application authorization separately
Network access does not equal login permission. Use individual SSH identities or centrally managed SSH policy, disable shared accounts, and limit administrative access to the required groups. Tailscale SSH documentation illustrates this separation: a user needs both general network access and an SSH access rule. Its optional check mode can require reauthentication for sensitive SSH sessions.

Protect Jupyter, inference APIs, schedulers, and dashboards with their own authentication and authorization. Bind services to the private interface where possible, use TLS appropriate to the deployment, and avoid treating possession of a VPN address as proof that a request is trusted.
7. Harden and isolate the bastion, if used
Permit only approved source CIDRs or identity-aware users to reach the bastion. Keep its operating system and access software patched, minimize installed services, require strong administrator authentication, and log successful and failed connections. From the bastion, allow only the private GPU targets and ports that administrators actually need.
Google Cloud recommends SSH forwarding patterns that avoid storing target private keys on the bastion. Treat the bastion as a controlled relay rather than a general-purpose workstation. Oracle’s private-subnet bastion guidance likewise describes restricted, time-limited access to instances without public IP addresses; apply the same principle if your platform offers temporary sessions.
8. Test approval, denial, and revocation
- From an approved identity and device, connect through the selected private path and verify each required service.
- From an unauthorized identity, device, network, or source range, confirm that the connection is denied at the intended layer.
- Check that a permitted port with its service stopped fails with a service-level error rather than being mistaken for a policy failure.
- Review VPN, cloud firewall, bastion, host, SSH, and application logs to confirm the source identity and destination port.
- Revoke a test user or device, then verify that existing and new access behave according to the policy’s session rules.
Testing both allowed and denied paths catches accidental broad rules and distinguishes routing problems from authentication or service failures.
Managed private mesh for GPU fleets
A private mesh is useful when GPU servers and operators are distributed across locations or providers. Each participating host receives private connectivity, while policy determines which users, devices, tags, and ports can communicate. Tailscale’s GPU infrastructure guide is specifically aimed at inference servers and training nodes and demonstrates separate server tags and port-scoped grants.
Policy design
- Assign separate identities or tags to training nodes, inference nodes, monitoring systems, and administrative devices.
- Give the inference team only the inference service port.
- Give the training team SSH and the monitoring port when those are required, without automatically granting access to every service on the host.
- Keep administrator access separate from workload access so a compromised application credential does not become an administrative path.
- Require both the private-network grant and the destination’s SSH or application permission.
The mesh encrypts traffic between participating devices; Tailscale’s SSH guidance describes WireGuard-based encryption. Encryption protects the path, but it does not decide which service a user may operate. Maintain host-firewall rules and service authentication even when all traffic arrives over the mesh.

Cloud private subnet with a bastion
Use this pattern when the GPU VM belongs to one cloud virtual network and a centralized ingress point is acceptable.
- Place the GPU VM in a private subnet without a public IP.
- Deploy a separate bastion in a controlled subnet with the minimum external reachability required for administrators.
- Limit inbound bastion access to approved source CIDRs or an identity-aware access service.
- Set the GPU VM’s cloud firewall or security group to allow SSH only from the bastion’s identity, subnet, or security-group equivalent.
- Permit workload and monitoring ports only from their documented private sources.
- Use SSH forwarding or an equivalent relay so target private keys do not reside on the bastion.
- Log and review bastion sessions, target connections, and denied attempts.
The bastion concentrates risk: compromise of it can expose every target it can reach. Keep its routing narrow, avoid using it for unrelated administration, and remove stale target permissions.
Identity-aware forwarding for internal-only VMs
Google Cloud documents Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) TCP forwarding as an intermediary for connecting to internal-only VMs. This approach can remove the need for a public address on the GPU VM while binding access to cloud identity permissions.
Configure the identity permission and the network firewall together. The forwarding service must be allowed to reach the target port, and the requesting user must be authorized to start the forwarding session. If either control is missing, the connection fails even though the VM is healthy. Keep the VM’s own SSH or application authentication enabled; forwarding is a transport path, not a replacement for login.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Site-to-site and client VPNs
A site-to-site VPN is appropriate when an office, laboratory, or cloud network is already managed as a private environment. A client VPN can serve individual operators who need routes into that subnet. In both cases, define which VPN addresses or identities can reach each GPU host and port.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Validate four details after connecting a client:
- The client receives the intended route to the private subnet.
- Private DNS resolves the GPU hostname to the internal address.
- Cloud and host firewalls permit only the required ports from the VPN range or identity.
- SSH and application authentication still require the correct user or service credentials.
Do not grant the entire private subnet merely because the VPN authenticates a user. Segment training, inference, monitoring, and administration networks where practical.

Port and service controls that matter on GPU hosts
GPU servers often expose more than a single shell. Treat each service as a separate authorization decision:
| Service category | Typical access decision | Control to apply |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Which administrators may open SSH sessions | Private-network grant, cloud and host firewall rule, SSH identity or policy |
| Interactive notebooks | Which researchers may use a notebook interface | Private-only binding, firewall restriction, notebook authentication and user authorization |
| Inference | Which applications or teams may call a model endpoint | Port-scoped network grant, service authentication, API authorization, rate and logging controls appropriate to the deployment |
| Training and scheduling | Which operators may submit or control jobs | Separate scheduler permissions and narrowly scoped network access |
| Monitoring | Which collectors may scrape metrics | Allow only monitoring sources and ports; do not expose metrics broadly |
The exact port numbers depend on the software you deploy. The security requirement is to identify them explicitly and avoid opening a broad range “for convenience.”
Troubleshooting: identify the failing layer
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The host name does not resolve or the route is missing | Private-network connectivity | VPN or mesh membership, subnet routes, private DNS, and whether the client is using the intended internal address |
| Connection times out before authentication | Cloud or host firewall, or network grant | Source identity or CIDR, destination tag or security group, protocol, and port |
| TCP connection succeeds but SSH is refused | Destination service | Whether an SSH service is running and listening on the expected private interface and port |
| SSH prompts for credentials and then denies access | SSH authorization | User account, key or identity policy, group membership, and any reauthentication or check-mode requirement |
| SSH works but the application fails | Application authorization or binding | Application login, API credentials, service listener address, TLS settings, and application-level permissions |
| Access remains after a user is removed | Revocation and session handling | Private-network membership, cloud identity, SSH policy, application sessions, cached credentials, and session-expiration behavior |
| Bastion can reach more systems than intended | Overbroad relay or firewall policy | Bastion routes, security groups, target rules, stored credentials, and administrative forwarding permissions |
Use logs from each layer rather than changing all rules at once. A denial in the private network should remain distinguishable from a stopped service or rejected application login.

Access reviews
Review users, devices, tags, groups, cloud roles, bastion source ranges, firewall rules, SSH keys, and application accounts on a fixed schedule and after personnel or project changes. Remove temporary training access when a run ends.
Logging and audit
Retain connection and denial logs from the private-network controller, cloud firewall or security group, bastion, host firewall, SSH, and applications. Correlate the identity, device, source address, destination, port, and time so an investigation can distinguish a policy decision from a service failure.
Emergency revocation
Prepare a documented order for cutting access: disable the user or device in the private network, remove cloud identity permissions, revoke SSH credentials, disable application tokens, and terminate active sessions where supported. If a bastion is suspected, isolate it and block its target permissions before investigating.
Deployment checklist
- GPU hosts have no unnecessary public IP or public ingress.
- Every required entry point is inventoried with an owner, source, destination, protocol, and port.
- Private-network policy is deny-by-default and grants only required sources and ports.
- Cloud firewall or security-group rules are limited to approved sources.
- Host firewall rules provide a second boundary.
- SSH, notebook, inference, scheduler, and monitoring services have independent authentication and authorization.
- Bastions are hardened, monitored, source-restricted, and unable to reach unrelated targets.
- Target private keys are not stored unnecessarily on bastions.
- Approved, denied, and revoked access paths have all been tested.
- Logs and an emergency revocation procedure are available to operators.
The most robust arrangement is layered: private reachability first, narrow network policy next, then cloud and host firewalls, followed by SSH and application authorization. Removing public exposure reduces the attack surface, while the separate controls keep a VPN connection from becoming unrestricted access to the GPU estate.
