The right restriction depends on what the update must protect. GitLab Maintenance Mode minimizes writes while allowing users to sign in and perform read-only Git activity. If nobody should log in during an Omnibus maintenance window, GitLab documents the separate gitlab-ctl deploy-page control. Neither option is a universal infrastructure or database lock, so confirm your GitLab version, edition, deployment type, and topology before enabling anything.
Choose the control by the outcome you need
Start by deciding whether the emergency update requires fewer writes or a temporary login barrier. Those are different operational goals and GitLab exposes different controls for each one.

| Required outcome | Documented control | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Minimize changes while users can still read projects and repositories | Maintenance Mode | It does not prevent sign-in, sign-out, clone, or pull. It is documented for Self-Managed Premium and Ultimate. |
| Prevent users from logging in during an Omnibus maintenance window | sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page up, reversed with sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page down |
The command is documented for GitLab Omnibus; do not assume it applies unchanged to another deployment type. |
| Stop new accounts from being created | New user account restrictions | Existing users can still sign in. This is not a maintenance lockout. |
| Restrict selected authentication methods | Sign-in restrictions | These settings target specified sign-in methods, not every path into GitLab. |
| Limit access to particular groups or networks | Group access and permissions and related visibility controls | The scope is limited to the groups, protocols, IP ranges, or domains configured. |
| Remove one account’s access | Block that user | Blocking an individual is not a practical substitute for a maintenance-window control. |
For an emergency patch, write down the intended user experience before changing a setting: may an existing user log in, browse issues, clone a repository, pull code, push code, call the API, or run an automation job? That answer determines whether Maintenance Mode is sufficient or whether an Omnibus deploy page is more appropriate.

What GitLab Maintenance Mode actually changes
GitLab describes Maintenance Mode as a way to reduce write operations to a minimum while maintenance tasks are performed. The feature is documented for Self-Managed Premium and Ultimate editions. Read the current Maintenance Mode documentation for the controls and edition requirements that match your release.

Activity that normally remains available
- Users can sign in and sign out.
- Projects and other readable application pages remain available to the extent your instance and its dependencies are healthy.
- Read-only Git operations, including clone and pull, continue.
Activity that is generally reduced or blocked
- Git writes such as pushes are blocked at the application enforcement points covered by Maintenance Mode.
- Many application and API changes are blocked while the mode is active.
- Operations that would change instance state are reduced so administrators can perform maintenance with less concurrent activity.
Those descriptions are operational boundaries, not a promise that every possible write source stops. GitLab’s development documentation on the internal workings of Maintenance Mode explains that the database itself is not generally placed in read-only mode. Background jobs, integrations, administrative actions, or components that do not pass through the covered enforcement points may therefore require separate attention.
Why Maintenance Mode is not a login lockout
Maintenance Mode intentionally allows authentication and read access. A user who must inspect a project, download source, or review an issue can still do so. If your security procedure requires that no user session be established during patching, Maintenance Mode alone does not meet that requirement.
How to use Maintenance Mode for a write-minimizing update
Use this procedure when read access is useful and the objective is to reduce application changes rather than hide GitLab completely. The exact administrative labels can vary by GitLab release, so use the Maintenance Mode page for your version and record the setting change in your incident log.
- Identify the instance. Confirm the GitLab version, Self-Managed edition, deployment method, and whether the installation is single-node, highly available, or part of a Geo configuration. The documented feature availability is edition-specific.
- Define the allowed activity. Tell stakeholders that sign-in, browsing, clone, and pull may continue, while pushes and many application or API writes may fail. This avoids treating a successful login as evidence that the patch window is open to normal changes.
- Check automation. List CI jobs, deployment integrations, service accounts, webhooks, runners, and scheduled tasks that could write to GitLab. Maintenance Mode does not turn the underlying database or every external component into a read-only system.
- Enable Maintenance Mode in GitLab administration. Use the administrative Maintenance Mode control documented for your release. Capture the time, operator, and intended end condition before starting the update.
- Observe the behavior you need to protect. Confirm that a representative write path is refused or placed into the documented maintenance behavior, while a permitted read path still works. Do not infer that one blocked request proves that every write source is blocked.
- Apply the emergency security update. Follow the package, chart, or deployment procedure appropriate to your installation. The restriction is a concurrency control; it does not replace the update instructions or a tested backup and recovery plan.
- Restore normal operation deliberately. After the update and any required service checks, turn Maintenance Mode off using the same administrative control. Record the time so an accidentally persistent maintenance state is detectable.
- Verify user-facing paths. Test sign-in, project viewing, clone, pull, push, API writes, runners, and integrations according to your change plan. A read test alone cannot demonstrate that the instance is fully operational.
How to stop logins with the Omnibus deploy page
For GitLab Omnibus, the maintenance documentation states that administrators who need to temporarily restrict users from logging in can use the deploy page command. Bring up the page with:
sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page up
When the maintenance window is finished, remove it with:
sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page down
These commands are documented in GitLab’s Omnibus maintenance commands. They are not a generic command for every GitLab installation. A Helm-based deployment, source installation, cloud-hosted instance, reverse-proxy arrangement, or custom high-availability topology may require a different procedure.
Safe sequence for the deploy page
- Confirm Omnibus. Verify that the server is the GitLab Omnibus deployment to which
gitlab-ctlbelongs and that you have the required administrative privileges. - Notify users and operators. Explain that login will be unavailable, identify the maintenance start time, and tell automation owners to pause jobs that would otherwise retry against GitLab.
- Enable the page. Run
sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page upfrom the applicable Omnibus host. - Check externally. Open the normal GitLab URL from a client that is not already authenticated. Confirm that the deploy-in-progress page is presented rather than assuming the command affected every frontend.
- Patch the instance. Perform the emergency update using the procedure for your version and topology. If traffic is distributed across multiple nodes, make sure the control is applied at the layer that actually receives user requests.
- Remove the page. Run
sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page downonly after the update work and your operational checks are complete. - Test recovery. Verify a fresh login, project access, clone, pull, push, API activity, and any critical integration. If a reverse proxy, load balancer, or multiple application nodes are involved, test through the same public endpoint users use.
The deploy page is a login restriction for the documented Omnibus scenario. It should not be described as a database freeze, a guarantee that already-running requests are terminated, or proof that every internal service has stopped writing.

1. Establish the boundary
Record the GitLab version and edition, deployment type, node count, database arrangement, runners, Geo relationships, proxies, and maintenance owner. The title of a setting or a command is not enough to establish compatibility. GitLab behavior and available controls can differ by release and deployment architecture.

2. Select one primary restriction
Choose Maintenance Mode when users may read and authenticate but writes need to be minimized. Choose the Omnibus deploy page when login itself must be unavailable and the instance is covered by the Omnibus documentation. Do not enable several unrelated restrictions simply because they sound stricter; each adds a different operational effect and recovery task.
3. Separate user traffic from system traffic
List human users, API clients, runners, webhooks, scheduled jobs, and administrative tools separately. A login barrier addresses interactive access. Maintenance Mode addresses selected application writes. Neither description by itself proves that a background integration, direct database client, or external automation has stopped.
4. Define exit criteria
Before activation, write the checks that permit reopening access: the security package is installed, required services are healthy, the intended GitLab URL responds, authentication works, and critical read and write paths have been tested. Do not leave a deploy page or Maintenance Mode enabled merely because the update command returned successfully.

Controls that are often confused with maintenance restrictions
Disabling new user registration
The new-account restrictions setting controls whether new users can register. It does not sign out existing accounts or stop them from logging in. Use it when the concern is account creation, not when an emergency patch requires a maintenance window.
Sign-in restrictions
Sign-in restrictions govern specified authentication methods. They can be useful when one method must be disabled, but the documentation does not present them as a universal maintenance lockout. Check which methods and exceptions your release supports before relying on them.
Group, protocol, IP, and email-domain controls
Group access and permissions and the broader visibility and access controls page describe scoped restrictions. Depending on the control, edition requirements may apply. These settings are appropriate when only certain groups, networks, protocols, or domains should be limited; they are not a substitute for a short, instance-wide maintenance decision.
Blocking an individual user
User moderation can block one account. It is an account-management action, not a way to prepare an entire GitLab instance for an emergency update. Blocking many users individually also creates a large and error-prone restoration task.

| Operation | Maintenance Mode | Omnibus deploy page |
|---|---|---|
| New interactive login | Allowed | Blocked by the deploy-in-progress page |
| Sign-out | Allowed | Users cannot begin a new session while the page is shown |
| Clone or pull | Read-only Git activity continues | Access is interrupted at the maintenance page |
| Push | Blocked at covered application enforcement points | Unavailable through the public endpoint while the page is active |
| API or application changes | Many are blocked, but coverage is not universal | New requests encounter the page; internal jobs still need review |
| New account registration | Unaffected unless separately disabled | Unavailable through the page, but registration is not the purpose of the control |
Communicate these distinctions to developers, security staff, and automation owners. In particular, a runner that keeps retrying after a failed push can create noise during an incident, while a read-only mirror or download job may be intentionally allowed to continue.
Topology checks that prevent a false sense of isolation
On a single Omnibus host, the deploy-page command is easy to associate with the public service. In a distributed installation, the command’s effect depends on where requests terminate. A load balancer, reverse proxy, multiple application nodes, Geo secondary, or separately managed frontend can leave another path serving GitLab. Test from the public URL and identify every node that can receive traffic.
Likewise, Maintenance Mode is an application-level behavior. It does not make the database read-only, disable every background worker, or stop a direct client that bypasses the normal enforcement point. Pause or monitor integrations according to their own procedures, and record exceptions rather than assuming the restriction handled them.
Troubleshooting common surprises
A user can still sign in while Maintenance Mode is enabled
This is expected. Maintenance Mode is designed to minimize writes while preserving sign-in and read-only use. If login must be unavailable, use the applicable Omnibus deploy-page procedure or an access control at the deployment’s actual edge, after confirming that it is supported in your architecture.
A push or API request fails, but another change succeeds
Maintenance Mode enforces restrictions at selected application points, not as a universal database read-only state. Identify the exact request path, integration, and component that accepted the change. Review the internal-workings documentation before claiming that the mode failed.
The deploy-page command is missing or has no visible effect
First verify that the host is running GitLab Omnibus and that the command was executed with the required privileges. If traffic enters through a load balancer or proxy, check every frontend and node that can serve the public URL. Do not copy the command into a different deployment type without that deployment’s documentation.
Users remain connected after the restriction is enabled
A login restriction controls new access; it is not evidence that every existing request, clone, pull, runner job, or background task has ended. Coordinate with automation owners and use your normal session, job, and traffic monitoring to determine what is still active.

The maintenance page remains after the patch
For Omnibus, the documented reversal is sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page down. Run it only after the update’s operational checks are complete, then test a fresh login and the critical repository and API paths. For Maintenance Mode, return to the administrative control used to enable it and verify its state after changing it.

What to document in the incident record
- GitLab version, edition, deployment type, and topology.
- The reason for restricting access and whether the goal was write minimization or login prevention.
- The exact control enabled, operator, start time, and public endpoint tested.
- Automation and integrations that were paused, allowed, or observed during the window.
- The update procedure used and any behavior that differed from expectations.
- The command or administrative action used to restore normal access and the post-update tests performed.
That record makes the next emergency decision faster and prevents a temporary restriction from becoming an undocumented permanent state.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put GitLab into read-only mode during maintenance?
Maintenance Mode is the documented choice for minimizing writes while retaining sign-in and read-only Git activity. It is not a general database read-only switch, so verify which application paths and integrations are covered.
How can I stop users from logging in while I patch GitLab?
If the installation is GitLab Omnibus, GitLab documents sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page up. Remove the page with sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page down after the update and operational checks. Confirm that your version, host, and traffic path match the Omnibus procedure.
Will disabling sign-ups keep existing users out?
No. New-user restrictions govern registration. They do not sign out existing accounts or prevent those accounts from logging in.
Does Maintenance Mode stop every API request?
No. Many application and API changes are blocked at covered enforcement points, but the database is not generally put into read-only mode and other components may still write. Test the specific integrations that matter to your environment.
Do I need both Maintenance Mode and the deploy page?
Not automatically. Select the control that matches the requirement. Combining controls can add recovery work without addressing a missing edge or backend path; use multiple controls only when your documented architecture and change plan require them.
What should I test before reopening access?
At minimum, test a fresh login, project viewing, clone, pull, push, relevant API writes, runners, webhooks, and other critical integrations through the public endpoint. Also verify that the selected restriction is actually disabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinal decision
Use Maintenance Mode when the requirement is “keep GitLab readable while reducing writes.” Use sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page up only for the documented Omnibus case when the requirement is “do not let users log in,” and remove it with sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page down after verification. Treat sign-up, authentication-method, group, network, and individual-user controls as narrower tools, and verify every procedure against the version and topology you actually operate.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Maintenance Mode minimizes GitLab writes but still allows sign-in and read-only Git activity. For a documented GitLab Omnibus deployment where no new login should be permitted, use sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page up and later sudo gitlab-ctl deploy-page down. Verify the exact version, edition, deployment type, topology, and recovery tests before relying on either control.
