Short answer: You may not be able to restore YouTube’s old desktop layout manually. YouTube tests features and rolls them out gradually, so two accounts can show different designs. Why your YouTube desktop layout changed
YouTube uses two related release methods. An experiment tests a product feature with a selected group of viewers. A rollout gradually expands a feature to more accounts. YouTube’s experiment guidance says viewers can see different features on different accounts while this happens. A changed home page, watch page, navigation rail, button position or recommendation arrangement therefore does not necessarily mean that your browser is broken.

The practical consequence is important: the layout is often controlled on the account or service side, not by a preference stored in your browser. One account can receive a new design while another account on the same computer still has the previous one. Other participants described seeing an undo control, while several said no such control was available. That conflict is evidence that availability varies; it is not proof that a rollback button exists for everyone now.

There is also a difference between an interface that has been selected for an experiment and one that YouTube is gradually launching to the wider service. An experiment may be limited to a particular account, while a rollout can reach more accounts over time. From the viewer’s perspective, both can look like a sudden redesign, and neither automatically comes with a user-facing way to return to an earlier version.
First determine whether the change is account-wide or local
Before attempting a workaround, isolate the scope of the change. These checks are diagnostic comparisons, not reliable ways to restore the old interface.
- Open the same page in a private or incognito window. Use the normal YouTube address and compare the home page and a watch page. A private window usually starts with a different session and disables many extensions. If the design is identical, that points toward an account or service-side change. If it differs, a browser setting, extension or stored session may be involved. Private browsing can also show a signed-out view, so note whether you are comparing the same account state.
- Compare another signed-in account, if you have one. Keep the browser, window size and page the same. Different layouts between accounts are consistent with YouTube’s experiment and rollout model. Do not assume that creating a new channel or logging out will permanently return the old design; those actions only help you compare assignments. A different result is evidence about eligibility, not a method for transferring the preferred layout to your main account.
- Compare a second browser. Do not treat the result as a fix. A second browser can reveal whether an extension, zoom level, theme or cached session is affecting the appearance. If both browsers show the same new layout for the same account, a local browser cause is less likely. If only one browser differs, reproduce the test with extensions disabled before concluding that YouTube changed the account.
- Check the window and zoom. Maximize the desktop window and return browser zoom to 100 percent. A narrow window or enlarged zoom can make navigation collapse, move controls or change the number of video columns without any YouTube experiment being involved.
- Disable layout-changing extensions for one test. Content blockers, custom style sheets, user scripts and accessibility tools can hide or move controls. Test with extensions disabled in a private window, then re-enable them one at a time. This identifies interference; it does not prove that YouTube has provided a rollback.
- Compare more than one page. Check the home page, a watch page and subscriptions. If only one page looks different, you may be seeing a page-specific test or a rendering problem rather than a service-wide redesign. Note the exact element that moved or disappeared.
Record what you see in each comparison: account, browser, private-window status, zoom level and the specific page that changed. That prevents you from mistaking a one-page display difference for a global redesign and gives you useful details if you submit feedback.

Check YouTube’s current experiment controls
YouTube has used youtube.com/new as a place where some users can view or manage feature experiments. Because the community reports are inconsistent and the current availability of controls is not established, inspect what your own account displays rather than relying on an old screenshot or article.
- Sign in to the account whose layout changed.
- Open
youtube.com/newdirectly in the same desktop browser. - Read the page as it appears now. Look for an experiment description, an end date, or a control that explicitly says you can leave, turn off or undo a feature.
- If an undo or leave control is visibly offered, read its confirmation text and use it only if it clearly refers to the layout you are trying to remove.
- Reload YouTube and check the home page and a watch page. If the control is absent, disabled or unrelated, do not infer that a hidden switch exists.
Take a screenshot or note the wording before using a control, especially if several experiments are listed. A control may apply to one feature rather than the entire desktop shell. If YouTube describes an end date, that date concerns the experiment shown on your account and should not be treated as a promise that every page will immediately return to an older design.
A control may be offered to one account and absent from another. It may also disappear when an experiment ends or when a staged rollout replaces the test. There is no supported basis for promising that visiting this page will restore the previous desktop design.

What the conflicting community reports actually show
The 2024 Help Community thread titled “How do I revert the new experimental youtube redesign on desktop?” contains three different kinds of evidence:

- An answer pointed to YouTube’s experiment guidance and stated that an experimental desktop design could not be manually changed.
Those reports describe what individual accounts saw at that time. They do not establish a current, universal procedure. A page can retain an old label in a search result while the experiment has changed, ended or been expanded to more accounts. Use the report to understand why experiences differ, not as a promise that your account has the same control.
Conflicting reports are particularly important when a workaround depends on account eligibility. Two people can follow the same address and receive different controls, so the absence of a button is not necessarily a loading error. Conversely, seeing a button does not mean that every account, browser profile or future experiment will expose it.
Official controls versus unofficial browser workarounds
When deciding what to try, separate actions that YouTube supports from community-maintained modifications. The differences matter if a workaround breaks scrolling, hides legitimate controls or stops working after a redesign.

This comparison also explains why a browser workaround should not be described as an equivalent to an official opt-out. An official control can be tied to the experiment and can be removed when the test changes. A filter only changes what your browser displays and may not restore the underlying behavior, navigation logic or controls.

The same community discussion includes user-submitted uBlock Origin filter suggestions. They are not official YouTube fixes, and their present compatibility has not been verified. Filters generally work by hiding or altering page elements whose names, identifiers or structure can change without notice. A redesign can therefore make a filter ineffective, hide the wrong control or interfere with page behavior.

Participants in that discussion described incomplete results and a scrolling problem. That is a warning against copying an old filter string and treating it as a supported repair. Even if a filter appears to recreate part of the old layout, it may leave new navigation logic underneath, produce an inconsistent mixture of old and new elements, or break after YouTube updates its code.
If you already use a custom filter and the page behaves badly, remove or disable that rule first, reload YouTube and retest with the extension off. Keep a copy of any unrelated rules before editing. Do not add a filter merely because a forum post says it worked for someone else, and do not assume a filter can restore features that YouTube has removed from the account.
Be especially cautious if the filter hides buttons, menus or scrolling containers. A visual change can conceal a control without changing its function, making it harder to report the problem or manage the account. If you cannot identify which rule caused the issue, disable the entire custom rule set temporarily and test a clean session rather than adding more exceptions.
Local troubleshooting when the layout is not an experiment
Some apparent redesigns are caused by the local browser environment. Work through these checks without assuming that any one of them will reverse a server-side rollout.
Reset the visual conditions
- Maximize the browser window and set zoom to 100 percent.
- Try the same page in a private window with extensions disabled.
- Temporarily turn off custom themes, user styles and scripts that modify YouTube.
- Compare the home page, a watch page and the subscriptions page. A change on only one page may be a page-specific test or a local rendering issue.
- Reload after each meaningful change so that a stale page is not mistaken for a new result.
Separate session problems from account assignment
Sign in to the same account in a clean browser profile or a second browser only for comparison. If the layout follows the account in every clean session, the evidence favors an account-side experiment or rollout. If only one browser shows the problem, investigate its extensions and display settings before changing anything else.
Keep the comparison controlled: use the same window width, zoom and page URL. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether an extension, account assignment or responsive layout caused the difference.

Do not mistake a temporary rendering fault for a rollback option
If elements are missing, overlap or fail to load, reload the page and check whether the problem is limited to one session. A temporary rendering fault can look like a redesign. If the same organized layout appears consistently across clean sessions, treat it as an intentional interface change rather than a browser error.
What not to rely on
- There is no guaranteed “old layout” switch. Official experiment guidance and the conflicting community reports do not support that claim.
- Logging out is not a restoration method. It can help compare signed-out and signed-in views, but it does not reliably change an account’s experiment assignment.
- Creating another channel is not a fix. A different channel or account may receive a different design, but that is only a comparison and may change later.
- Changing browsers is not a permanent solution. It can expose an extension or session issue, yet the same account may receive the same rollout elsewhere.
- Old screenshots and filter strings are not current documentation. Interface code and experiment eligibility change, so historical instructions can be incomplete or harmful.
- Clearing data should not be presented as a rollback. A clean session can help diagnose a local problem, but it cannot be relied on to remove an account-side experiment.
If your account has no undo control
If youtube.com/new and the normal YouTube interface show no relevant opt-out, the realistic fallback is to report the problem through YouTube’s available in-product feedback mechanism. Describe the exact page that changed, the account-level comparison you made, your browser, whether the issue appears in a private window and any accessibility or navigation problem it causes. Attach a screenshot only if it does not expose private information.
Useful feedback is specific rather than simply saying “I want the old layout.” Identify the control that moved or vanished, explain how the new arrangement affects navigation, and say whether another account on the same computer displays something different. The label and location of the feedback entry can vary by interface, so use the current Help or account menu wording shown to you instead of following an old click path. Feedback is a report, not a request with a guaranteed response. YouTube may continue the experiment, alter the design or change eligibility without publishing a restoration date.
A practical decision path
- Is the change visible only with one extension, theme or browser? Disable the interfering tool and correct the local setting.
- Does the same account show the new design in a private window and another browser? Treat it as likely account-side or service-side, not as a problem that a cache tweak can reliably solve.
- Does another account show a different design on the same computer? That is consistent with account-specific experiment or rollout eligibility.
- Does your account display an explicit control at
youtube.com/new? Follow that control’s own wording, then verify the result on the pages that changed. - Is no control available? Avoid unverified filters as a first-line fix, send clear feedback and use the current layout while YouTube’s experiment or rollout evolves.
What to expect next
A staged rollout can make the interface change again without any action from you. An experiment can end, expand, be replaced by another design or remain unavailable to a particular account. Because no current universal rollback mechanism is established, the safest expectation is that the old desktop layout may not be recoverable on demand.
