You normally do not need to buy an eligible digital Xbox game again after moving to a new console. Sign in on the new Xbox with the Microsoft account that purchased the game, open that account’s owned library, and install it. Set the new console as that account’s Home Xbox only if you want its device license available to other profiles or for supported offline use. Microsoft limits Home Xbox changes to five during a one-year period, so switching consoles is a licensing decision rather than a routine refresh.
What restores access to a digital Xbox game
Xbox digital access has two related parts:
- Account-based access: the Microsoft account that bought the game carries the purchase entitlement. That account can sign in on another Xbox and use the game online after the console validates the license.
- Device-based access: one console can be designated that account’s Home Xbox. The account’s device licenses move to that console, allowing supported games to be used by other profiles on it and enabling the Home-console licensing model when the console is offline.
Changing hardware does not erase an eligible digital purchase. The new console must be connected to the account that owns the entitlement, and the game must still be available under the relevant purchase or subscription terms. A game obtained through a subscription is different from a game bought individually: subscription access depends on an active entitlement and can require periodic online renewal.

Check these details before restoring anything
- Use the exact Microsoft account that paid for the game. A different profile on the same console may not own the purchase.
- Have the new Xbox connected to the internet during sign-in, installation and the first license check.
- Decide whether the new console should become the account’s Home Xbox before changing the setting. The change moves device licenses away from the previous Home Xbox.
- Identify how access was obtained: an individual digital purchase, a subscription catalog, a promotional entitlement or a physical disc.
- If the title is an Xbox Play Anywhere game, check that it is one of the supported titles before expecting access on a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
Keep the original purchase email, order history or transaction details available if ownership is unclear. Those records do not transfer a license by themselves, but they can help identify which Microsoft account completed the transaction. If several accounts are used in one household, write down the purchasing account before removing profiles from the old console.
Restore an individually purchased digital game
1. Sign in with the purchasing account
- On the new Xbox, add or select the Microsoft account that purchased the game.
- Do not rely on the fact that another family member’s profile is present. Ownership follows the purchasing account, not simply the console or the profile currently displayed.
- Make sure the console is online so Xbox can associate the account with its purchase history and validate the entitlement.
If the game is absent from the owned library, stop here and verify the account before changing Home Xbox settings. A Home Xbox switch cannot transfer a purchase from one Microsoft account to another.

2. Open the account’s owned library
Open the console’s game library and filter for owned games or the account’s full library. Dashboard labels can change, but the relevant destination is the list of content owned by the signed-in account rather than the general store catalog. Select the title and choose the install option.
Installing from the owned library is preferable to searching the store first. The store may show a purchase button when the wrong profile is active, while the owned-library entry reflects the account’s entitlement. If the title has separate editions or bundles, select the edition included with the original purchase.
3. Let the installation and license check finish
Keep the Xbox online while the download begins. A game can appear in the library before its files are fully installed, and some titles require an additional update or content package. Once installation completes, launch the game while still signed in with the purchasing account. This first launch gives the console an opportunity to complete its online license validation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the download is interrupted, resume it from the queue rather than purchasing the title again. A failed download is a storage or network event, not proof that the account lost ownership. Make sure the console has enough free space for the base game and any required update.
4. Set the new console as Home Xbox only when you need device sharing or supported offline access
On current Xbox interfaces, the Home Xbox control is generally located at Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox. Select the option to make the current console the Home Xbox. Microsoft’s labels can change with dashboard updates, so use the Personalization area if the wording differs slightly.
Making the new console Home Xbox is not required merely to use a purchased game with the purchasing account while signed in online. It is useful when other profiles on that console need access, or when you want the device-license behavior associated with the Home console.
Choose the right licensing arrangement
| Situation | What to do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| The purchasing account will play on the new Xbox | Sign in with that account, open its owned library and install the game. | The console must be able to validate the account license; online access is the dependable arrangement. |
| Other profiles need to play on the new Xbox | Set the new Xbox as the purchasing account’s Home Xbox. | Device licenses move from the former Home Xbox to the new one. |
| The purchasing account is using a non-Home Xbox | Sign in with the purchasing account and keep the console connected for license validation. | Other profiles on that non-Home console do not automatically receive the account’s device license. |
| The title comes from a subscription | Sign in to the account with the active subscription and install the title while it remains included. | Access can end when the subscription expires or the game leaves the catalog, and periodic renewal checks may be required. |
| The title is an Xbox Play Anywhere game | Sign in to the associated account on Xbox and a compatible Windows 10/11 PC. | Play Anywhere applies only to supported titles, not every digital Xbox purchase. |
Use this distinction when deciding whether to switch consoles: ask who needs to play, whether that person can sign in, whether offline use matters, and whether the game is owned outright. If only the purchasing account uses the replacement Xbox and reliable internet is available, leaving Home Xbox unchanged avoids consuming one of the limited changes. If several profiles need the game on the replacement console, the Home designation is usually the relevant device setting.

Understand what changing Home Xbox really does
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules allow an account to change its Home console up to five times during a one-year period. When the setting changes, the account’s device licenses move to the new Home Xbox and operate only there. The limit is not a monthly allowance and should not be treated as a troubleshooting button.
This matters when replacing a console, sharing games with a household member or preparing for offline use. If the old console remains in another household, changing Home Xbox can remove the device-license benefit that other profiles on that console were using. The purchasing account can still use account-associated access on another console by signing in online, but the former console no longer has the account’s Home designation.
Before switching, compare the two consoles. The new Home Xbox is the one that receives the account’s device licenses; the old Home Xbox is no longer the device designated for that purpose. A switch therefore changes where the license operates rather than copying a second device license. If you regularly move between two consoles, reserve changes for an actual hardware or household change instead of trying the setting whenever a game displays an error.
Microsoft’s policy describes the five-change limit but does not establish a general exception process. If the account has exhausted the allowance, avoid repeated attempts and contact Microsoft Support for an account-specific review.

Offline play: what the Home Xbox setting can and cannot provide
The Home-console model is intended to let the designated console use device licenses without the purchasing account being signed in for every session. That does not turn every game into a permanently offline product.
- Games whose core operation depends on online services, servers or multiplayer authentication may still require an internet connection.
- License validation can require periodic internet access. Microsoft’s development documentation does not promise indefinite offline operation for every configuration.
- Subscription entitlements can require renewal checks even when the game files are already installed.
- For a non-Home Xbox, the safer expectation is online use with the purchasing account signed in.
If offline play is the reason for switching Home Xbox, first confirm that the intended console is actually designated Home Xbox and then test the specific title while temporarily offline. Do not infer that another game will behave identically. A title may also require an update, an online account service or a server connection for features that are separate from ownership.
Subscription games require a separate check
A game installed through a subscription catalog is not the same entitlement as a game purchased outright. The account must have an active subscription that includes the title at the time access is checked. Catalog availability can change, and the account may need to reconnect periodically to renew the license.

If a subscription game suddenly displays a purchase prompt, check the subscription status and whether the title is still included before buying it. The fact that the game remains installed does not prove that the subscription entitlement is still valid. If you later buy the title individually, that purchase becomes a separate account entitlement and can be restored from the owned library like other digital purchases.

Home Xbox sharing can provide device-level access under the licensing model, but the underlying subscription still has to be active and the title still has to be covered. Individual catalog availability and family-account rules can require an account-specific check.
Use Xbox Play Anywhere only for supported games
For an Xbox Play Anywhere title, signing in with the associated Microsoft account can make the digital game available on Xbox and compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices. This is a title-specific benefit. A normal Xbox digital purchase should not be assumed to include a Windows license, and a PC installation does not establish that every Xbox game is Play Anywhere-enabled.
When moving between Xbox and PC, verify that the exact title is identified as Play Anywhere and use the same purchasing account on both devices. Separate editions, add-ons and saved-data behavior can vary by game. Play Anywhere does not change which account owns the purchase, and it does not remove the need to meet the game’s own PC requirements.
Troubleshoot the most common failure messages
The game is missing from the library
- Sign out of unrelated profiles and confirm the account shown on the console is the one that completed the purchase.
- Check the owned-games view rather than only the store’s general search results.
- Review whether the original access came from a subscription, a family member’s account or a promotional entitlement.
- Reconnect the console and allow the account and library to synchronize.
If another household member bought the game, that person’s account may be the owner. Adding your profile alone does not move the entitlement to you. If the purchase was made under an old Microsoft account alias, sign in to that account rather than creating a new account with a similar email address.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe game appears but asks you to buy it
First recheck the signed-in account and the edition shown in the store. Then check the network connection so the console can validate the license. If the game was obtained through a subscription, verify that the subscription is active and that the title is still covered. Do not assume a specific catalog status without checking the current subscription listing.
An edition mismatch can also create a purchase prompt: a standard edition, deluxe edition and bundle may appear as separate entries. Return to the owned library for the purchasing account and install the edition listed there instead of selecting a similarly named store item.

The game installs but will not start offline
- Confirm that the intended console is listed under My home Xbox for the purchasing account.
- Reconnect once to complete pending license renewal, updates or account checks.
- Check whether the game requires online services even for its single-player features.
- For subscription access, reconnect periodically because the entitlement may need renewal.
A successful installation proves that the files are present; it does not guarantee that every offline license condition has been met. Test offline behavior with the specific account, console and title combination you intend to use.
Another console in the household lost access after the switch
That is the expected consequence when device licenses move to the new Home Xbox. Decide which console should receive the device license, then use account-based online access on the other console when the purchasing account is available. Repeatedly switching back and forth consumes the annual change allowance.
The five-change limit has been reached
Microsoft states the limit as five Home-console changes in a one-year period. The available material does not define a universal reset date or guaranteed exception route. Record which console is currently designated Home Xbox and contact Microsoft Support if the setting must be corrected for an account-specific reason.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Physical discs are a different entitlement
This procedure addresses digital account licenses. A disc-based game is authenticated through the disc and the console’s hardware requirements, so inserting a disc is not a method for restoring a digital purchase, and a digital entitlement does not automatically replace a missing disc. For a physical title, follow the game’s disc and console compatibility requirements.
When to contact Microsoft Support
Escalate after confirming the purchasing account, owned-library entry, network connection, subscription status and Home Xbox designation. Support is the appropriate route for purchase disputes, an account that cannot be identified, family-sharing or parental-account complications, a suspected regional or edition mismatch, and a Home Xbox allowance problem. Have the Microsoft account details and the exact error message available, but do not share your password.
Practical checklist for a console move
- Identify the Microsoft account that completed the purchase.
- Connect the replacement Xbox to the internet and sign in with that account.
- Open the owned library, not only the store search page.
- Install the correct edition and let updates complete.
- Launch once while online to allow license validation.
- Choose Home Xbox only if other profiles or supported offline use require the device license.
- Remember that changing Home Xbox is limited to five times in a one-year period.
- For subscription titles, verify active coverage and periodic renewal requirements.
- For Play Anywhere titles, use the same account on a supported Windows 10/11 PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy my digital Xbox games again after getting a new console?
Usually not. Sign in on the new Xbox with the Microsoft account that purchased the game and install it from that account’s owned library. A different profile may not show the entitlement.
How do I make my new Xbox my Home Xbox?
On current interfaces, go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox, then choose the option to make the current console the Home Xbox. Labels can vary slightly after dashboard updates.
Best Value
What happens to my old console when I change Home Xbox?
The account’s device licenses move to the new Home Xbox and operate only there. Other profiles on the former Home Xbox can lose device-based access, although the purchasing account can still use account-based access online.
How many times can I change Home Xbox?
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules allow up to five Home Xbox changes during a one-year period. The rule is not a monthly allowance, and a general exception procedure is not established.
Can I play my purchased game offline on the new Xbox?
A designated Home Xbox supports the Home-console device-license model, but offline operation is not guaranteed indefinitely for every game. Online services, periodic validation, updates and subscription renewals can still require internet access.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does a game installed through Game Pass ask me to buy it?
Check that the subscription is active and that the title remains included. An installed copy does not prove that the subscription entitlement is still valid. Buying the game separately creates a distinct account purchase.
Can I play every Xbox purchase on a Windows PC?
No. Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to supported titles. For those games, sign in with the associated account on Xbox and a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 device.
Does adding my profile transfer a game bought by another family member?
No. Ownership remains with the Microsoft account that completed the purchase. The purchasing account may need to sign in, or its Home Xbox designation may need to cover the console, subject to the licensing rules.
The Bottom Line
To restore a digital Xbox purchase, use the Microsoft account that bought it and reinstall the title from that account’s owned library. Set the new console as Home Xbox only when you need device-level sharing or supported offline access, remembering that Microsoft permits five Home Xbox changes in a one-year period.
