If a waterproof jacket’s outer fabric turns dark and absorbs rain, clean it first, dry it as the care label allows, and use the permitted heat step to reactivate any remaining durable water repellent (DWR). Test the fabric. If drops still spread instead of beading, apply a compatible spray-on or wash-in DWR treatment and follow that product’s activation instructions.
Wet-out does not automatically mean the waterproof membrane has failed. It usually means the water-repellent finish on the outer face fabric is no longer working effectively. The restoration process is therefore: identify the construction, remove contamination, reactivate the existing finish, test, and reproof only when necessary.

What “wet-out” means
DWR and the waterproof membrane do different jobs
Durable water repellent is a treatment applied to the outer face textile. It makes rain form beads that roll away instead of soaking into the fabric. The waterproof membrane beneath that textile is a separate component designed to block liquid water while allowing water vapor to escape.
When DWR wears away or becomes covered with dirt, body oils, sunscreen, smoke, or detergent residue, the face fabric absorbs water. That saturated layer can feel cold, heavy, or clammy and may reduce breathability. It can also make condensation feel like a leak even though the membrane is still blocking liquid water.

Wet fabric is not proof of a leak
A darkened, saturated exterior by itself does not establish membrane failure. A jacket can wet out on the outside and still keep rain from passing through. Actual leakage is more likely when moisture appears inside quickly during rain, when a seam or panel is visibly damaged, or when the garment has a tear or other construction problem.
Why wet-out can feel like a performance failure
A saturated face textile can make the jacket feel colder and heavier even if no rain has crossed the membrane. The wet outer layer can also make interior humidity harder to distinguish from a true leak. This is why diagnosis should begin with the outside fabric and the conditions in which the inside became damp, rather than with an assumption that the membrane is ruined.
Check the label and construction before doing anything
Follow the sewn-in care label first
Care instructions differ by fabric, membrane, seam construction, and finish. The label controls whether the jacket can be machine washed, tumble dried, ironed, or treated with a particular reproofing product. Do not substitute a generic high-heat setting for the temperature or drying method specified by the manufacturer.
Identify special constructions
GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY garments are a documented exception. They do not have a conventional textile outer face layer. The cited care instructions say not to tumble dry, iron, or apply DWR to these garments. If your jacket is SHAKEDRY, follow its specific instructions rather than the ordinary shell procedure below.
Prepare the work area and supplies
- Read the jacket’s care label and the reproofing product’s label.
- Have a small amount of suitable liquid detergent or a technical garment cleaner ready.
- Use clean water for rinsing.
- If the label permits it, have access to a tumble dryer or a household iron and a clean protective cloth.
- Choose a compatible DWR treatment only after cleaning and testing.
Keep the garment’s instructions and the treatment instructions together while working. A method that is appropriate for an ordinary shell may be prohibited for a different construction, so product directions never override the sewn-in label.
Restore repellency step by step
1. Inspect the jacket while it is dry
Look for dirt, oily marks, sunscreen, smoke residue, caked-on mud, damaged fabric, failed seam tape, and tears. Close zippers and fasteners as the care instructions direct. If the jacket has obvious damage, note its location before washing; DWR cannot repair a hole, a separated seam, or a damaged membrane.
Inspection also helps separate a widespread finish problem from a local construction problem. A broad pattern of darkening after rain points toward face-fabric wetting. A single wet spot that appears inside near a tear or seam deserves repair evaluation instead of repeated reproofing.

2. Wash away contamination and residue
Cleaning is the first treatment because contamination can stop droplets from beading and can interfere with a new finish.
For GORE-TEX outerwear, the cited care instructions recommend warm water and a small amount of liquid detergent. They specifically exclude powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach, and suggest an extra rinse to remove detergent residue. REI’s guidance likewise identifies technical cleaners without performance-affecting additives as suitable for technical garments.
- Check the label for the approved wash method and water temperature.
- Use warm water only when the garment instructions allow it.
- Add a small amount of suitable liquid detergent, or use a technical cleaner intended for waterproof/breathable clothing.
- Do not use powder detergent, fabric softener, or chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
- Run an additional rinse if the care instructions permit one, so detergent is not left in the face fabric.
Nikwax identifies Tech Wash as a cleaning product for waterproof/breathable clothing. It is an example of a technical cleaner, not a reason to ignore your jacket’s label or to assume every shell needs the same product.

Do not apply reproofing treatment to a visibly dirty garment. Oils, smoke, sunscreen, mud, and leftover detergent can prevent even adhesion or leave portions of the face textile untreated. If the jacket still feels coated or smells strongly of cleaner after the first cycle, use the label-approved extra rinse before moving on.
3. Dry the garment and reactivate remaining DWR
Dry the jacket exactly as the label directs. For ordinary GORE-TEX garments whose instructions permit tumble drying, GORE-TEX recommends leaving the garment in the dryer for a further 20 minutes after it is dry. That additional time can reactivate DWR that remains on the fabric.
GORE-TEX summarizes the purpose this way: “Washing, drying and reheating your garment helps restore the durable water repellent (DWR) that is important to the performance of a GORE-TEX garment.” The wording is important: reheating helps restore remaining finish; it does not create a new coating where abrasion has removed it.
If a dryer is unavailable or disallowed, GORE-TEX describes a gentle ironing alternative where the garment instructions allow it: use no steam and place a protective cloth between the iron and the garment. Keep the iron at the permitted setting and avoid direct contact with the shell.
Heat can revive existing finish; it cannot replace DWR that has been removed by abrasion or use. Never apply heat to a SHAKEDRY garment under the cited care instructions, and never override a label that prohibits tumble drying or ironing. If the label specifies another drying method, use that method and do not add an unapproved heat step.

Sprinkle or lightly spray a few drops of water over representative areas of the clean garment. Watch what happens:
- Beading and rolling: droplets remain rounded and move across the surface. The existing repellency is functioning, so stop; additional treatment is unnecessary.
- Sitting, spreading, and darkening: water is wetting the face textile. Continue to reproof only if the garment’s construction and care instructions permit DWR treatment.
- Moisture appearing inside quickly: investigate possible damage, seam problems, or a membrane issue rather than assuming more DWR will solve it.
Test more than one location because shoulders, hood, upper sleeves, seat, and pack-contact areas can wear at different rates. A single beading spot does not prove that every panel is protected, and a single dark spot does not by itself prove that the membrane has failed.
5. Reapply DWR only when cleaning and permitted heat are insufficient
If the face fabric still wets out after washing and reactivation, replenish the finish with a compatible DWR treatment. Both spray-on and wash-in products are valid approaches; the available guidance does not establish one as universally better for every shell.
GORE-TEX recommends a pump-action spray rather than an aerosol to reduce environmental impact. Apply the treatment as its label directs and ensure the entire area that needs protection is covered. A spray requires deliberate, even coverage. A wash-in treatment distributes the product through the wash, but it still must be compatible with the garment and used at the specified amount.
Nikwax identifies TX.Direct as an occasional reproofing treatment. Patagonia’s care guidance names Storm Eco Proofer when beading does not return after a wash and dry. These are examples of product paths supported by manufacturer guidance, not universal endorsements. Availability and instructions can change, so read the current product label.

Do not combine products casually or assume that a cleaner is also a reproofing treatment. Tech Wash is identified for cleaning, while TX.Direct is identified for occasional reproofing. Keep those roles separate unless a product label explicitly provides a combined process.
6. Activate the new treatment
Some DWR products require drying or another activation step. Follow the treatment’s instructions rather than assuming that the 20-minute GORE-TEX dryer guidance applies to every product or jacket. If the garment label forbids the required activation method, do not use that treatment; choose a compatible alternative or ask the manufacturer.
Allow the treatment to complete its stated process before judging the result. Testing while the garment is still wet from application can make a successful treatment appear incomplete. Once activation is finished, inspect the whole face fabric rather than only the easiest-to-reach panel.

After the treatment and its required activation are complete, repeat the water-drop test. Check shoulders, hood, upper sleeves, seat, and other areas that receive heavy rain or abrasion. Beading indicates surface repellency. A remaining dark patch means that area is still wetting out and may need more complete coverage, another permitted treatment, or professional evaluation.
Spray-on versus wash-in DWR
| Method | How it is applied | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Spray-on | Apply a pump-action treatment over the garment’s outer surface after cleaning, covering the areas specified by the product. | Coverage must be even and complete. Follow the product’s drying or activation directions. |
| Wash-in | Add the treatment through the wash process as directed by the product label. | Confirm compatibility with the jacket and use the stated amount and cycle. Activation may still be required. |
Neither method is established as the best choice for every waterproof shell. The jacket’s care instructions, the treatment label, and the garment’s construction determine the appropriate option.
Spray-on treatment makes it possible to concentrate application where testing shows wetting, but incomplete coverage is the main pitfall. Wash-in treatment is applied through the wash, so measuring the stated amount and selecting the specified cycle matter. In either case, a second water-drop test is the practical check; product names alone do not prove that the jacket has been restored.
Reactivation or a completely new treatment?
When reactivation is enough
If water beads after cleaning and the label-permitted heat step, the remaining DWR is doing its job. Adding more product offers no demonstrated benefit in that situation and may add unnecessary residue.

When to replenish DWR
If the clean, properly dried garment still absorbs water across the face fabric, the finish has likely worn down or been impaired. Reapply a compatible DWR and activate it according to the product directions. Abrasion from pack straps, repeated use, and contamination can remove or weaken a finish; heat cannot restore finish that is no longer present.
When DWR is the wrong fix
DWR does not seal a puncture, restore failed seam tape, repair a delaminated membrane, or correct a manufacturing defect. If substantial moisture gets inside after only a few minutes of rain, or if you can see damaged fabric or seams, stop applying treatments and contact the manufacturer or retailer for evaluation.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The jacket still wets out after one wash
Confirm that the jacket was rinsed thoroughly and dried according to its label. Re-test when fully dry. If water still spreads and darkens the face textile, move to a compatible spray-on or wash-in DWR rather than repeating random detergent or heat cycles.

Only some panels wet out
Partial wetting often reflects uneven wear or incomplete spray coverage. Clean the jacket, test several locations, and apply treatment to the full area required by the product instructions. Pay particular attention to high-abrasion zones, but do not exceed the treatment’s stated application method.

Beading outside with dampness inside can indicate perspiration or condensation rather than rain passing through the membrane. Improve ventilation using the jacket’s openings and check whether moisture appears only during high exertion. If liquid enters rapidly in steady rain, have the garment assessed for damage.
The jacket smells or feels coated after washing
Detergent residue can interfere with performance. Use the label-approved cleaner, avoid powder detergent and fabric softener for GORE-TEX outerwear, and run the recommended extra rinse. Do not add a reproofing product until the garment is clean.
The label prohibits both heat and DWR
Do not improvise. Some constructions, including SHAKEDRY under the cited instructions, must not be tumble dried, ironed, or treated with DWR. Follow the garment’s specific care guidance or contact its manufacturer.
Water beads in one test but not during rain
Retest when the garment is fully clean and dry, using several high-wear areas. Beading can be uneven if contamination or abrasion affects only part of the shell. If the same areas repeatedly darken, use a compatible treatment only after confirming that the label permits it.

How to maintain repellency after restoration
- Clean the jacket when dirt, oils, sunscreen, smoke, or detergent residue begins to affect beading, using the approved method.
- Use only cleaners and treatments that are compatible with the garment’s fabric and membrane.
- Follow the label every time you wash, dry, or apply heat; a method suitable for one shell can damage another.
- Inspect high-wear areas regularly, especially where pack straps or repeated abrasion contact the fabric.
- Use a simple water-drop test before a trip or prolonged exposure to rain.
- Reproof when cleaning and permitted reactivation no longer restore beading, rather than applying DWR on a fixed calendar.
No general, source-backed success rate or universal treatment-life figure applies to every jacket. Performance depends on the garment, contamination, abrasion, construction, and the exact care and treatment process. Patagonia publishes usage-based washing guidance for its own garments, but those brand-specific intervals should not be treated as a rule for every shell.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make my waterproof jacket waterproof again without reproofing?
Often, yes. Wash away contamination, dry the jacket as directed, and use the permitted heat step to reactivate remaining DWR. If water still spreads and darkens the face fabric after that process, a compatible DWR treatment is the next step.
Does a wet outside mean the membrane is leaking?
No. Wet-out usually describes water soaking into the outer face textile. Look for rapid moisture inside, visible tears, failed seams, or other damage before concluding that the membrane has failed.
Should I use spray-on or wash-in DWR?
Both are supported options. Spray-on treatment requires complete, even exterior coverage; wash-in treatment is distributed through the wash. No source establishes one method as universally superior, so follow the jacket and product labels.

How long should I tumble dry a GORE-TEX jacket?
Only if the garment label permits tumble drying. GORE-TEX recommends an additional 20 minutes after the garment is dry to reactivate remaining DWR. Do not transfer that timing to a different construction or product whose instructions say otherwise.
Can ironing replace tumble drying?
Where the garment instructions allow it, GORE-TEX describes gentle ironing with no steam and a protective cloth between the iron and garment. Use the permitted setting. Never iron a garment whose label prohibits it.
What if water gets inside after only a few minutes of rain?
Stop treating the problem as ordinary wet-out. Significant interior moisture may indicate a damaged fabric, seam, membrane, or other garment issue. Contact the manufacturer or retailer for evaluation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How often should I reproof?
There is no universal calendar interval supported for every jacket. Reproof when cleaning and permitted reactivation no longer restore beading, and inspect high-abrasion areas regularly.
Bottom line
Start with the care label, clean the shell, dry and reactivate the remaining DWR when permitted, and test with water. Reapply a compatible spray-on or wash-in treatment only when the clean fabric still wets out. If moisture is entering quickly or the garment is damaged, seek manufacturer or retailer evaluation instead of expecting DWR to repair the waterproof system.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest safe way to restore a jacket that wets out?
Check the care label, wash away dirt and residue, dry as directed, and use the permitted heat step. Test with water before deciding whether new DWR is needed.
Will DWR fix a tear or failed seam tape?
No. DWR treats the outer face fabric; it cannot repair punctures, separated seams, failed seam tape, delamination, or a defective membrane.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Follow the treatment label, but GORE-TEX recommends a pump-action spray rather than an aerosol to reduce environmental impact.
Why does my jacket feel clammy when rain is not coming through?
A wet face fabric can feel cold or clammy, and perspiration or condensation can collect inside. Wet-out alone does not prove that liquid rain crossed the membrane.
Can I use ordinary laundry detergent?
Use only what the jacket label permits. GORE-TEX recommends warm water and a small amount of liquid detergent for its outerwear, while excluding powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach.
What should I do if only the shoulders wet out?
Clean and test several areas, then apply compatible treatment with complete coverage if the label permits it. Shoulders and pack-contact areas may experience more abrasion.
The Bottom Line
Clean first, reactivate only with label-approved heat, test the face fabric, and reproof only when beading does not return. Treat rapid interior leaks or visible damage as a repair issue, not a DWR issue.
