The icon may be missing even though the YouTube app is still installed. First look for YouTube in the app list, App Library, or system search; only reinstall it if the app is genuinely absent. Android usually needs an app-drawer drag back to the Home screen, while iPhone recovery can involve App Library, a hidden Home Screen page, or the Hidden folder introduced with iOS 18.
Identify what happened before changing anything
A missing shortcut and a deleted app are different problems. Opening YouTube from the phone’s search, Android app list, or iPhone App Library proves that the app is still installed. In that case, restoring the icon does not require a download and should not remove your account, subscriptions, or app data.

Do not factory-reset the phone or perform a broad settings reset for a missing icon. The platform’s launcher and store checks resolve this problem in the normal cases.
Use the store button as a second confirmation
The wording in the official store helps distinguish an absent app from a misplaced icon. In Google Play, Open means YouTube is already installed; Install means it is not currently installed. In the App Store, Open indicates an existing installation, while Get or the cloud-download button starts a new one. A store result alone does not tell you whether an iPhone app is on a hidden page, so still check Search, App Library, and the Hidden folder when appropriate.

Restore YouTube on Android
Put the installed app back on the Home screen
- From the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom edge to open the complete app list. Depending on the phone maker and launcher, this may be called the app drawer or apps screen, and its appearance can differ.
- Find YouTube. If the app list has a search field, enter YouTube.
- Touch and hold the YouTube icon until it can be moved.
- Drag the icon toward the edge of the display to move to the desired Home-screen page, then place it in an empty position.
- Release the icon. Open it once to confirm that the shortcut launches the installed app.
Google’s Android guidance distinguishes two actions that are easy to confuse: Remove takes an app off the Home screen only, while Uninstall removes the app from the device. If YouTube was removed rather than uninstalled, the app list still contains it and the drag-and-drop procedure is all that is needed.
If YouTube is in the app list but will not open
A shortcut problem is different from an app failure. If tapping YouTube from the app list produces an error, closes immediately, or shows an update prompt, deal with that message first. Check the phone’s software-update screen and the Google Play listing for YouTube. Do not choose Uninstall merely because the Home-screen icon is absent; uninstalling creates a separate installation and sign-in task.
Android launchers do not all use identical labels or gestures. Some place the app list behind a button, use a horizontal page of apps, or offer an “Add to Home” command in the icon’s long-press menu. The underlying operation is the same: locate the installed YouTube entry and create a Home-screen shortcut. Google notes that some of its generic launcher steps apply only to Android 14 and later, so a manufacturer’s launcher may show a different menu on an older version.

Before assuming the shortcut was removed, swipe across each Home-screen page and open any folders where you normally keep video or media apps. A shortcut can be moved rather than deleted. If YouTube is found in a folder, touch and hold it and drag it out to an empty position or to another page. If it is nowhere on the Home screen, return to the complete app list; the app list is the reliable place to determine whether the application itself remains installed.
When YouTube is not in the Android app list
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for YouTube and select the official YouTube listing, rather than an unrelated player or shortcut app.
- Tap Install. If the button says Open, YouTube is already installed; return to the app list and restore its shortcut instead.
- After installation finishes, tap Open, then return to the Home screen. The launcher may add a new icon automatically; if it does not, find YouTube in the app list and drag it onto the Home screen.
YouTube’s Android installation guidance currently lists Android 9.0 or later as the requirement for the current app. That minimum is time-sensitive and can change as new releases drop. If Google Play says the device is incompatible or does not offer an install option, check the phone’s Android version and install any available system update.
Use the browser when the phone is too old
If the phone cannot be updated to a supported Android release, YouTube’s support guidance points to m.youtube.com in a mobile browser as the fallback. You can bookmark that address or add a browser shortcut to the Home screen, but it is a website shortcut, not the native YouTube app. Browser playback and account features can differ from the app.

Do not treat an old-device compatibility message as evidence that the icon is merely hidden. Compatibility concerns whether the current app can be installed or updated; launcher placement concerns where an already-installed app is shown. Confirm the store status and Android version separately.
Restore YouTube on iPhone
Search first, then move the app from App Library
- From a Home Screen, swipe down from the middle of the display to open Search.
- Type YouTube. If a result appears, tap it to verify that the app is installed.
- If the result shows an App Library location or you prefer to browse, swipe left past the final Home Screen page until App Library appears.
- Find YouTube in its category or use the App Library search field.
- Touch and hold the YouTube icon, then keep holding while dragging it left toward a Home Screen page.
- Place it where you want it and tap Done when Home Screen editing finishes.
An iPhone app can remain in App Library without having an icon on any Home Screen page. That is why searching and checking App Library should come before downloading another copy.
If Search opens YouTube but does not show it on the page you expect, that is still proof that the installation exists. Use the App Library move operation rather than deleting and reinstalling. The goal is to create a visible shortcut, not to obtain a second installation.
Reveal a hidden Home Screen page
If YouTube opens from Search or App Library but you cannot see the page where it used to be, the page itself may be hidden.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then choose Edit Pages. On some iPhone versions, tap the row of page dots instead.
- Look for a page whose circle is unchecked.
- Tap that circle to show the page again, then tap Done.
Apps on a hidden Home Screen page remain available in App Library. Hiding a page therefore does not uninstall YouTube. If several pages are unchecked, re-enable the page that contains the former YouTube shortcut, or simply place a fresh shortcut on the page you use most.

iOS 18 adds a stronger hiding option for individual apps. A hidden app does not appear on the Home Screen, in App Library, or in Search, so this state can look like an uninstall.

- Swipe left through the Home Screen pages until you reach App Library.
- Scroll to the Hidden folder and open it.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode.
- Touch and hold YouTube.
- Tap Don’t Require Face ID (the wording may refer to Touch ID or passcode on a device that uses one).
- Authenticate again if prompted. YouTube will leave the Hidden folder; add it to a Home Screen page from App Library if necessary.
You can also review hidden apps at Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps. The Hidden folder is an iOS 18 feature, so do not expect this exact location on an earlier iOS release.
Because a hidden iOS 18 app is excluded from ordinary Search and App Library results, checking only those two places is not enough when both appear empty. The authentication step is intentional: without Face ID, Touch ID, or the passcode, the Hidden folder will not reveal its contents.
If Search, App Library, and Hidden Apps contain nothing
- Open the App Store.
- Search for YouTube and select the official YouTube app listing.
- Tap Get or the cloud-download button and authenticate if Apple requests it.
- When the download completes, tap Open. If the icon is not on the current Home Screen page, find it in App Library and drag it onto the page you want.
If the App Store shows Open instead of Get, the app is installed somewhere on the phone. Return to the Search, App Library, hidden-page, and Hidden-folder checks rather than downloading a second copy.

What to do when installation is blocked
Android compatibility and updates
On Android, a missing install button, an “incompatible” notice, or a failed update can indicate that the operating system is below the version supported by the current YouTube release. Check the Android version in the phone’s Settings and install the manufacturer’s available system update. Compatibility is separate from icon placement: an app can be installed but missing from the Home screen, or it can be unavailable for a device that is too old.
YouTube’s surfaced Android requirement is Android 9.0 or later, but requirements can change with later releases. Treat that number as a check against the current store listing, not as a guarantee that every future version will support the same devices.
If no supported system update exists, use m.youtube.com in a mobile browser. Avoid downloading an unofficial APK from an unknown website to solve an icon problem; the official store or the browser fallback provides the documented path.

iPhone storage, account, and restrictions
If the App Store cannot complete a download, read the message it displays and address that specific condition, such as insufficient storage, an Apple Account authentication request, or a network failure. These conditions do not mean that the old icon needs a reset. Once YouTube is installed, its location is controlled through App Library and Home Screen editing as described above.

- Can you open YouTube without visiting a store? Use Android’s app list or iPhone Search/App Library. If yes, restore the shortcut; do not reinstall.
- Is the app visible on iPhone only in App Library? Touch and hold it and drag it to a Home Screen page.
- Is an entire iPhone page missing? Use Home Screen editing and select the unchecked page circle.

Keep the restored icon easy to find
After restoring YouTube, place it on the Home Screen page you use most and open it once to confirm the shortcut. On iPhone, remember that moving an app to App Library or hiding a page changes visibility without deleting the app. On Android, remember that Remove and Uninstall have different effects. Keeping those distinctions in mind prevents an accidental uninstall the next time an icon seems to disappear.
