Choose the least invasive fix that matches what changed. If you are simply in Desktop Mode, select Return to Gaming Mode; Steam says this shortcut brings back the standard Steam Deck interface. If a Decky plugin changed Gaming Mode, remove that plugin from Decky’s plugin-management menu. If you want Decky Loader gone, switch to Desktop Mode, run the Decky installer again, and select uninstall decky loader. Use SteamOS recovery only when the problem is broader than a plugin or remains after normal cleanup.
These are separate actions: returning to Gaming Mode does not uninstall anything, removing one plugin leaves Decky installed, and uninstalling Decky does not establish that every file or setting changed by every plugin will be restored. The steps below help you identify the right scope before making a larger change.

First identify what “back to normal” means
A Steam Deck can look unfamiliar for several different reasons. Desktop Mode is a separate KDE desktop, while Gaming Mode is the controller-focused Steam Deck interface. Decky Loader adds a plugin layer inside Gaming Mode, and individual plugins can alter menus, artwork, system information, themes or other presentation details. Finally, a failed update or damaged system file is a SteamOS problem rather than an ordinary customization issue.

Start at the top of the table and stop as soon as the interface is normal again. Reinstalling SteamOS for a cosmetic problem creates unnecessary risk and work.

Return from Desktop Mode without uninstalling anything
If the Deck is currently showing the desktop, the quickest fix is the shortcut supplied by Steam. Steam’s Desktop FAQ identifies a desktop link named Return to Gaming Mode that returns the device to its standard Steam Deck UI: Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop: FAQ.
- Save any files or close applications you are using in Desktop Mode.
- On the desktop, locate the shortcut labeled Return to Gaming Mode.
- Open the shortcut and wait for Steam to switch sessions. The Deck should return to the normal Gaming Mode shell.
Steam also documents logging off as another route back. Open the desktop’s application menu, choose the log-out option, and confirm the session change. The exact visual placement can vary with the desktop layout, but logging off ends the current desktop session rather than removing software.
This step does not touch Decky Loader, plugins, themes, shader files or other customization. If the same appearance is present after Gaming Mode loads, you were dealing with a plugin or theme, not merely the wrong session.

Remove one plugin or theme while keeping Decky
Use this path when Gaming Mode is functional and you want Decky for other extensions. The Decky project describes updating, uninstalling and reloading plugins from its own management interface. Its current instructions are in the project README: Decky Loader README.

Open Decky’s plugin-management menu
- Remain in Gaming Mode. If you are still on the desktop, use Return to Gaming Mode first.
- Open the Decky menu from Gaming Mode using the Decky button or shortcut shown on your Deck.
- Open the plugin-management section. The menu lists installed plugins and provides the project’s documented controls for managing them.
Uninstall the offending extension
- Identify the plugin responsible for the visual change. Theme, appearance, CSS, menu and layout extensions usually have names that describe their effect.
- Select that plugin in the management menu and choose its uninstall or remove action.
- Confirm the removal, then use Decky’s reload option if the menu offers one. A reload applies the change without requiring a full system recovery.
- Return to the Gaming Mode home screen and check the menus, library, quick-access panel and other areas that the plugin modified.
Remove only the extension you can identify. A plugin may affect more than one screen, so check the whole interface before deciding that cleanup failed. If the plugin’s own settings include a reset or restore-defaults command, use that before uninstalling when you want to preserve the plugin for later use.
What this route does not promise
Removing a plugin is narrower than removing Decky Loader. The project documentation does not guarantee that every plugin reverses every file, preference or generated asset when uninstalled. If a theme still appears, restart Gaming Mode once and inspect Decky’s installed-plugin list again. If the problem is still present after the plugin is gone, treat it as a possible leftover setting or a wider SteamOS issue rather than repeatedly deleting unrelated extensions.
Uninstall Decky Loader completely
Choose this route only when you no longer want the Decky framework. It is more extensive than switching sessions or removing one plugin. The Decky project documents reinstalling its installer in Desktop Mode and selecting an uninstall option; it also documents an uninstall script for users who prefer Konsole. Follow the project’s current wording because installer choices can change: Decky Loader repository.
Use the graphical installer route
- Press the Steam button while in Gaming Mode.
- Open Power, then choose Switch to Desktop.
- In Desktop Mode, run the Decky installer again. Running the installer is intentional; the documented uninstall choice is provided from that installer.
- When the installer presents its actions, select
uninstall decky loaderand confirm. - Allow the process to finish, then use the desktop’s Return to Gaming Mode shortcut or log off.
- After Gaming Mode starts, open the area where Decky normally appears and verify that the loader and its plugin controls are no longer present.
Do not substitute an arbitrary shell command for the documented installer action. The repository also describes an uninstall script for Konsole users, but the exact script and invocation should be copied from the current README rather than reconstructed from memory. This avoids running a stale command after the project changes its installation layout.

Decide whether to remove plugins first
You do not need to uninstall every plugin individually before removing Decky Loader. If one plugin is causing a problem and you otherwise want Decky, remove only that plugin. If your goal is a completely Decky-free Gaming Mode, use the loader uninstall route. In either case, keep a note of any custom settings you may want to recreate later; uninstalling the loader is not documented as a universal rollback for every side effect a plugin could have made.
Check the result after cleanup
A short verification pass prevents you from escalating to recovery unnecessarily. Test the areas most likely to reveal a remaining customization.
- Session: Gaming Mode opens instead of the desktop.
- Home and library: standard Steam Deck navigation and artwork appear without the removed theme or layout.
- Quick-access menu: the Decky entry is absent if you removed Decky, or the remaining plugins are listed if you kept it.
- Controls: Steam, B, A, triggers and the touchpads respond normally in the affected screens.
- Restart: after one normal restart, the same default appearance remains.
If all five checks pass, stop. There is no benefit in performing a system recovery merely to confirm a cosmetic change.

The Return to Gaming Mode shortcut is missing
First confirm that you are actually in the Steam Deck desktop session and not looking at a different application window. Save work, close full-screen applications and check the desktop’s application menu for a log-out action. Steam documents logging off as an alternate route back to Gaming Mode in the same FAQ: Steam Desktop FAQ. If neither route works, restart the Deck once. A missing shortcut alone is not evidence that SteamOS must be reinstalled.

The interface changed again after reboot
A plugin may still be installed, or the loader may have reloaded it during startup. In Gaming Mode, open Decky’s management menu and inspect the installed list. Remove the extension that controls the appearance, then reload Decky if that option is available. If you removed Decky itself but a visual change remains, note exactly which screen is affected and move to the broader-system checks below instead of deleting random files.
Decky’s menu will not open
Do not assume that the loader is fully removed because its menu is unresponsive. Switch to Desktop Mode through Steam → Power → Switch to Desktop, then run the current Decky installer and use its documented uninstall choice. This takes the supported path even when Gaming Mode’s plugin panel is unavailable.
The Deck cannot boot normally or shows system errors
Boot failures, repeated crashes outside the customized interface, missing core Steam components or errors that survive a loader uninstall are outside ordinary plugin cleanup. Steam’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting instructions cover system-level options, including restoring modified system files to an unmodified state. Read the recovery option descriptions carefully before proceeding because recovery can affect system settings and data differently from a plugin uninstall.

A SteamOS or Steam client update changed compatibility
Plugin behavior can change when SteamOS or the Steam client changes. If a plugin stopped working immediately after an update, update or remove that plugin through Decky’s management menu before attempting recovery. The Decky README is the authoritative place for the project’s current installation, update and removal workflow. If the update also caused failures in standard Steam functions, document the symptoms and use Steam’s recovery guidance rather than treating every regression as a theme problem.

Recovery is a fallback for a system problem, not the normal way to restore the default interface. Consider it when at least one of these conditions is true:
- Gaming Mode or Desktop Mode fails to start even after a normal restart.
- Core SteamOS files appear modified or damaged, and the fault is not limited to a plugin-controlled screen.
- Decky has been removed, but system-wide errors, crashes or boot problems continue.
- Steam’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a recovery option that matches the symptom.
Steam’s recovery documentation explains the available choices and includes an option to restore modified system files to an unmodified state. Follow that page’s current instructions exactly: SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting. Back up personal files where possible and read whether a selected option preserves user data before confirming it.
Choose the smallest fix: a practical decision framework
Use this sequence whenever you are unsure which operation to perform:

- Ask whether the desktop is the only problem. If yes, return to Gaming Mode. Do not uninstall anything.
- Ask whether Gaming Mode works normally apart from one customization. If yes, remove that plugin and keep Decky.
- Ask whether you want no Decky components at all. If yes, switch to Desktop Mode and use the installer’s
uninstall decky loaderaction. - Ask whether failures affect SteamOS itself. If yes, or if they persist after supported cleanup, read Steam’s recovery instructions and choose the least destructive matching option.
This order matters because each step increases scope. A session change is reversible and low risk; a plugin uninstall changes one extension; loader removal affects the plugin framework; SteamOS recovery addresses the operating system.
What not to do
- Do not use SteamOS recovery first for a theme or menu appearance that can be removed from Decky.
- Do not uninstall Decky when you only need to leave Desktop Mode.
- Do not claim that removing Decky automatically restores every preference or asset touched by every plugin; the project documentation does not establish that guarantee.
- Do not paste an old Konsole command from a forum when the current Decky README provides the supported script or installer workflow.
- Do not delete system files manually to hide a plugin. Manual deletion can turn a cosmetic issue into a SteamOS repair problem.

- Identify whether you are in Desktop Mode, seeing a plugin customization, removing Decky, or facing a system failure.

- Use the current Decky installer’s uninstall option for the loader itself.
- Verify Gaming Mode, navigation, controls and a restart.
- Escalate to SteamOS recovery only for persistent or system-wide faults.
The safest restoration is the narrowest one that solves the symptom. Returning to Gaming Mode fixes the session, plugin management fixes a customization, Decky’s documented uninstall removes the loader, and SteamOS recovery remains the last resort for problems that extend beyond those layers.
