How to Restore the Default iPhone Icons and Home Screen Layout

Use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout, then tap Reset Home Screen. This restores Apple’s built-in apps to their original Home Screen arrangement, removes folders you created, and places downloaded apps alphabetically after the built-in apps. It does not use the destructive Erase All Content and Settings command.

What the Home Screen reset actually does

Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes Reset Home Screen Layout as returning the built-in apps to their original layout on the Home Screen. It is a targeted arrangement reset, not a factory reset of the iPhone.

The command changes the way apps are organized. It does not ask you to choose which folders to keep or which apps to move. The result is a standardized starting arrangement based on the built-in apps that came with the iPhone, followed by your downloaded apps in alphabetical order.

Element Result after the layout reset
Built-in Apple apps Returned to Apple’s original Home Screen layout.
Folders you created Removed. Apps that were inside those folders appear as individual apps in the resulting arrangement.
Downloaded apps Placed alphabetically after the built-in apps.
Home Screen placement Rebuilt by the reset command rather than preserving your custom page and folder arrangement.
Erase command Not part of this operation. Erase All Content and Settings is a separate option that removes content.

The reset is useful when pages have become difficult to navigate, folders are no longer useful, or you want to start organizing from Apple’s standard arrangement. It is not the right tool if you only want larger icons, a different icon appearance, or one app moved to another page.

Reset the entire Home Screen layout

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset. This opens a list of reset choices; it is not the same as erasing the iPhone.
  5. Choose Reset Home Screen Layout.
  6. Read the confirmation prompt and tap Reset Home Screen.

After confirmation, iOS applies the standard arrangement. The built-in apps return to their original positions, your created folders disappear, and downloaded apps follow alphabetically after the built-in apps. Allow the Home Screen a moment to redraw before judging the result, especially if you had many apps or several pages.

Do not choose the erase option by mistake

The Transfer or Reset iPhone screen contains several commands with very different consequences. Reset Home Screen Layout is the narrowly targeted choice for app placement. Erase All Content and Settings is a destructive operation that removes content from the iPhone.

  • For a rearranged Home Screen, select Reset Home Screen Layout.
  • Do not select Erase All Content and Settings merely because both commands appear under the same Settings area.
  • If you are uncertain which reset option is on screen, stop and read the complete label before confirming.

The wording matters: the layout command names the Home Screen specifically, while the erase command refers to all content and settings.

Choose the least disruptive option for your goal

There are three practical ways to change an iPhone Home Screen. The right choice depends on whether you want to rebuild everything, alter appearance, or move only a few items.

Your goal Use Scope Effect on folders and downloaded-app order
Return to Apple’s standard arrangement Reset Home Screen Layout Whole Home Screen arrangement Your folders are removed; downloaded apps are placed alphabetically after built-in apps.
Change icon size or visual treatment Home Screen Edit > Customize on iOS 26 Appearance, not placement It is an appearance adjustment and does not perform the layout reset.
Move one app, several apps, or a widget Press and hold the Home Screen background, then drag items Selected items Existing folders and the rest of your arrangement remain unless you move items yourself.

For example, a person who wants every app out of old folders should use the reset. Someone who likes the current pages but wants a different icon style should customize instead. If only a weather widget or one frequently used app is in the wrong place, manual movement avoids rebuilding the entire Home Screen.

What to check before confirming a reset

A layout reset is easy to start but can undo an arrangement that took time to build. Consider these checks before tapping the confirmation button:

  • Identify folders worth preserving. Because folders you created are removed, note the categories or groupings you intend to recreate later.
  • Record important page locations. If you rely on a particular app being on a specific page, take a screenshot or write down its current location before resetting.
  • Separate placement from appearance. If your real objective is dark, clear, tinted, or larger icons on iOS 26, use the customization controls instead of resetting placement.
  • Confirm that you want a whole-device arrangement change. Moving a single app manually is less disruptive than resetting every page.
  • Read the final confirmation text. Verify that it says Reset Home Screen, not an erase command.

These precautions are especially useful when another person set up the phone or when the Home Screen contains work, travel, banking, or accessibility-related groupings that are hard to reconstruct from memory.

Reorganize after the reset

The reset gives you Apple’s baseline arrangement. You can then make a smaller number of deliberate changes rather than trying to repair a complicated layout one folder at a time.

Move an app to another position

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons and widgets begin to jiggle.
  2. Touch and hold the app you want to move.
  3. Drag it to a new position on the current page or toward the edge of the screen to move it to another page.
  4. Release it in the desired location.
  5. When you finish, tap the control that exits Home Screen editing, or tap an empty area if your iOS version provides that behavior.

Apple’s documented manual-movement method also applies to widgets. The item must be dragged while the Home Screen is in its editing state; a normal tap opens an app instead of moving it.

Move a widget

Enter the same jiggle mode, then press and drag the widget to another position or page. Make sure the destination has enough open space for the widget’s dimensions. If the destination is crowded, move another item first rather than repeatedly dropping the widget where it cannot fit.

Recreate folders selectively

After the reset, you can create only the folders you still need. Place related apps together by dragging one app onto another while the icons are jiggling, then continue dragging additional apps into the resulting folder. Because the reset removed the previous folders, this is an opportunity to use fewer, clearer groups instead of reproducing every old category.

Change icon appearance without changing app placement on iOS 26

iOS 26 provides separate Home Screen customization controls. These controls are for how icons look, not where apps are located.

  1. Touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Customize.
  4. Choose the available appearance or size control you want.

Apple documents controls for changing icon size and for choosing dark, clear, or tinted appearances. These choices modify the visual presentation while leaving the layout-reset command separate. If you are trying to restore the original positions of built-in apps, customization alone will not do that.

Customization availability and exact menu wording can vary by iOS version. If your iPhone does not show Edit and Customize in the documented sequence, check which iOS version is installed and use the controls available on that version rather than assuming the layout has been reset.

Common situations and the correct response

“I want the original Apple arrangement, including downloaded apps.”

Use Reset Home Screen Layout. The documented result restores the built-in apps to their original arrangement and places downloaded apps alphabetically afterward. It does not recreate your personal folders.

“My icons look wrong, but their positions are fine.”

On iOS 26, open the Home Screen editing controls and use Edit > Customize. Select the icon size or appearance you want. A layout reset would address placement and could remove folders unnecessarily.

“Only one app is in the wrong place.”

Enter jiggle mode and drag that app to the required position or page. A whole-layout reset is broader than necessary for a single placement change.

“I need to remove old folders and start over.”

The layout reset is the direct option because Apple documents that user-created folders are removed. Prepare a short list of folders you actually want to rebuild before confirming.

“I am already on the Transfer or Reset iPhone screen.”

That screen is only the starting point. Tap Reset, then select the specifically named Reset Home Screen Layout command. Do not infer that every option on this screen has the same effect.

Troubleshooting after choosing Reset Home Screen Layout

The Home Screen does not look exactly like an older screenshot

Apple’s description refers to the original layout of the built-in apps. Menu wording and customization availability may vary by iOS version, and an older screenshot may reflect a different iPhone model or system release. Use the current arrangement produced by your installed iOS version as the reference point.

Downloaded apps are not where you expected

The documented rule is alphabetical placement after the built-in apps. Check the app’s name as it appears on the Home Screen, including punctuation or a company name that may sort differently from the name you commonly use for it.

A folder I needed has disappeared

That is an expected consequence of the layout reset, not evidence that the reset failed. Re-enter Home Screen editing and recreate only the folders you still need by dragging related apps together.

I selected a visual option but the app order did not change

That is expected when using iOS 26’s customization controls. Icon size and dark, clear, or tinted treatments affect appearance; they are not the reset-layout operation.

I am worried that I selected the wrong reset

Review the confirmation wording before proceeding. The intended command ends with Reset Home Screen. If the screen says Erase All Content and Settings, stop; that is the separate destructive command Apple identifies as removing content.

A practical decision checklist

Use this short checklist when deciding what to do:

  • Choose Reset Home Screen Layout if you want Apple’s built-in arrangement and are prepared to lose your created folders.
  • Choose Edit > Customize on iOS 26 if your goal is icon size or dark, clear, or tinted styling.
  • Drag apps or widgets manually when only selected items need to move.
  • Before a whole-layout reset, document any folder structure or page placement that you may want to recreate.
  • Never substitute Erase All Content and Settings for a Home Screen reset.

What “default” means in this context

“Default” here means the Home Screen arrangement supplied by iOS for the built-in apps. It does not mean that every personal preference, folder, or downloaded-app grouping will be restored. The documented reset has a defined scope: built-in placement returns to Apple’s original layout, personal folders are removed, and downloaded apps follow alphabetically.

That distinction explains why the command is useful for a clean organizational start but unsuitable as an appearance-only change. It also explains why manual movement remains available afterward: the reset establishes the baseline, while dragging lets you tailor individual pages without invoking another whole-layout change.
