Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a single action, right-click the item and choose Show more options. You can also try Shift+right-click or Shift+F10. To make the legacy menu appear by default, a widely circulated per-user registry command may work on some Windows 11 installations, but community guidance says the workaround was deprecated in version 24H2 and user reports conflict. Treat that edit as experimental rather than guaranteed.
What “classic right-click menu” means in Windows 11
Windows 11 uses a compact context menu when you right-click a file, folder, desktop item or another shell object. The compact menu puts common actions near the top and moves additional commands into Show more options. The older, longer menu is still available through that second view; “restore” can therefore mean either opening it when needed or attempting to make it the first menu every time.

Those are different goals. The built-in routes change nothing permanently and are the lowest-risk choice. The registry workaround attempts to change the shell’s default behavior for your Windows account, so it requires a restart and can stop working after a Windows update. A Microsoft Q&A community answer describes the compact-menu behavior and the legacy route; it is support guidance from the community, not a formal Windows specification (Microsoft Q&A, 2025).
Open the classic menu for one action
Use Show more options
- In File Explorer, on the desktop, or in another Windows app, right-click the file, folder or object.
- Select Show more options at the bottom of the compact menu.
- Choose the command you need from the legacy menu.
This is the standard, reversible path. It does not alter the next right-click, change another user’s account, or edit the registry. If you only occasionally need commands that are not in the compact menu, this is the recommended solution.

Try Shift while right-clicking
Some Microsoft Q&A responses suggest holding Shift while you right-click the object. On systems that honor the shortcut, Windows opens the legacy menu directly, avoiding the intermediate compact menu. Release Shift after the menu appears. The behavior is described in community answers rather than a current Microsoft shortcut specification, so it may not behave identically in every app or Windows 11 build (Microsoft Q&A thread, 2024).
Use Shift+F10 from the keyboard
Select the file or folder first, then press Shift+F10. This is the keyboard equivalent listed by Microsoft Q&A contributors for opening the context menu associated with the selected item. Depending on focus and the application, it may open the menu for the selected object rather than the object under the mouse pointer. Like Shift+right-click, it is a one-time shortcut and does not make the legacy menu the default.
Attempt to make the classic menu the default
The following command is a commonly circulated community workaround. It writes an empty default value beneath a per-user CLSID key. The command targets HKCU, so it is intended for the account from which you run it; it is not a machine-wide setting for every Windows user.
Important: Microsoft Q&A material says this approach was deprecated in Windows 11 version 24H2. Comments on the same page report both success and failure, including reports involving different registry locations. There is no verified build-by-build compatibility matrix. Do not assume that a successful command means the method is supported or will survive a future update.

Run the per-user command
- Save your work and close open File Explorer windows. This reduces confusion when the shell restarts.
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as the Windows user whose menu you want to change. The command writes to that user’s profile.
- Paste this command exactly, including the braces, backslashes and quotation marks, then press Enter:
reg.exe add "HKCUSoftwareClassesCLSID{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}InprocServer32" /f /ve
/f tells the Registry command to proceed without an interactive confirmation, and /ve addresses the key’s default value. Keep the command on one line when pasting it. A successful return to the prompt only confirms that the registry operation was accepted; it does not prove that your current Windows build will use the key for context menus.
Restart the Windows shell
The Q&A instructions say to restart File Explorer or restart the computer after the edit. A practical shell restart is:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer.
- Choose Restart. The taskbar and open Explorer windows may disappear briefly and then return.
- Right-click a test file or folder. If the workaround is honored by your build, the longer menu should appear without selecting Show more options.
If Windows Explorer is not listed or the shell does not return cleanly, sign out and back in, or restart Windows. A restart is also the clearest way to test whether the change is persistent rather than merely affecting an already-open shell process.
Undo the registry change
If the compact menu returns unexpectedly, an update causes problems, or you simply prefer the Windows 11 layout, remove the per-user key with the inverse command from the same account:

After running it, restart Windows Explorer or restart the computer. The command removes the CLSID branch named in the workaround; it does not uninstall Windows components or delete your files. Because registry operations can have shell-wide effects for the current account, do not substitute a different path copied from an unverified forum post.
What changes in Windows 11 version 24H2 and later
Version 24H2 is the key limitation for this method. The Microsoft Q&A article that publishes the command describes the workaround as deprecated in 24H2, while comments record readers who still see the old menu and others who see no change. Those reports are not a compatibility guarantee, and they do not establish which later builds or update combinations support the key.
In practical terms, the built-in Show more options route remains the dependable fallback because it does not rely on an undocumented registry hook. Shift-based shortcuts are also temporary alternatives when they work in the application receiving the input. If the registry edit has no visible effect on 24H2 or a later build, that result is consistent with the source’s warning; repeating the same command or trying random CLSID paths is unlikely to turn it into a supported setting.
Compare the available approaches
| Approach | Persistence | Risk and effort | Version reliability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Show more options | One action only | No configuration change; two clicks | Built into the compact-menu design; no registry dependency | Occasional access to legacy commands |
| Shift+right-click | One action only | No configuration change; requires holding a key | Suggested by community answers; behavior can vary by app or build | Direct mouse access when the shortcut is honored |
| Shift+F10 | One action only | No configuration change; requires keyboard focus | Suggested by community answers; not presented as a current formal specification | Keyboard-driven work or limited mouse use |
| CLSID registry command | Attempts to change the default for one Windows account | Command-line registry edit plus shell restart; reversible with the delete command | Disputed; the source says deprecated in 24H2 and reports conflict | Testing a persistent preference when you accept version risk |
The table’s distinction matters: none of the temporary shortcuts can be “broken” by leaving a registry key behind, while the registry method can become ineffective after an update without giving a clear error. For a managed or frequently updated computer, the first three options avoid that maintenance burden.

Troubleshoot the result
Show more options is missing
Check that you are right-clicking a normal shell object such as a file, folder or empty desktop area. Some applications supply their own context menu and may not expose the same Windows shell entry. In File Explorer, try a different file and then right-click an empty area of the folder background. If the compact menu appears, the legacy commands should be behind Show more options.
Shift+right-click does nothing different
Make sure the pointer is over the object before pressing the right mouse button and hold Shift for the entire click. Test the same action in File Explorer rather than an application with a custom menu. If it still opens the compact menu, use Show more options; the shortcut is a community-suggested route, not a promise that every shell surface implements it.
Shift+F10 opens the wrong menu or no menu
Keyboard focus must be on the intended item. Click the file or folder once so it is selected, then press Shift+F10. On some keyboards, function keys are assigned to hardware controls, so you may need the keyboard’s function-key mode. If focus is in a text box or another application control, the command will apply there instead of to a file or folder.

- Confirm that you ran the command under the same Windows account whose menu you tested;
HKCUmeans “current user.” - Restart Windows Explorer, then test a newly opened File Explorer window. If that does not help, restart Windows.
- Recheck the command’s path and CLSID. A missing brace, an omitted backslash or a typographical change creates a different registry location.
- Consider your Windows version. The source specifically describes the method as deprecated in 24H2, and conflicting community reports mean failure can be expected on some current builds.
Do not interpret failure as evidence that another unverified registry path is safe. The available material does not establish a reliable replacement location or a current compatibility table.

The old menu appeared and then disappeared after an update
Windows updates can change undocumented shell behavior. First use Show more options to confirm that the legacy commands themselves are still present. If you no longer want to test the workaround, run the reversal command above and restart Explorer. Keeping the compact menu avoids depending on a registry behavior that the source identifies as deprecated.
You want the setting for several Windows accounts
The command is under HKCU, so it applies to the account that runs it. Other accounts require their own preference and may continue to show the compact menu. Avoid applying registry files indiscriminately to all profiles unless you understand the account and permission implications; the researched instructions establish only the per-user command.
Choose a safe workflow
- Start with Show more options and confirm that it contains the command you need.
- If you use the legacy menu frequently, test
Shift+right-click orShift+F10in the application where you work most. - Only if a persistent default is important, decide whether an undocumented, version-sensitive registry edit is worth the trade-off.
- Run the per-user command exactly as shown, restart Explorer, and test with a newly opened window.
- If the edit fails, leave the built-in route in place rather than adding alternate registry keys from unverified sources.
- If you change your mind, use the documented inverse command and restart the shell again.
This approach separates a guaranteed action from an experimental preference. You can always reach the legacy commands without changing Windows configuration, while the registry option remains clearly bounded by its per-user scope and uncertain behavior after version 24H2.

The linked Microsoft Q&A pages establish practical routes that community contributors use: Show more options, Shift-based access and the CLSID command. They do not provide an official promise that the registry key is supported on every current Windows 11 build, nor do they supply a tested compatibility matrix. The safest interpretation is therefore narrow: use the compact menu’s built-in legacy view for dependable access, and treat the registry edit as a reversible experiment that may stop working.
