Open Google Play Store, go to Profile picture > Manage apps & device > Manage, switch the filter to Not installed, select the app, and tap Install. Google Play identifies the purchase through that account, so you should not have to pay again on another compatible Android device.
What happens to a paid app when you replace your Android phone?
A Google Play purchase belongs to the Google Account used at checkout, not permanently to the old handset. After that account is added to a compatible Android device, Google Play can recognize the entitlement and let you install the app again. Google Play Help states: “If you buy apps or content on Google Play, you can use it on any compatible Android device without the need to pay again.”

Restoring the purchase means restoring your permission to download the app. It does not automatically prove that the app’s local files, settings, saved games, offline downloads, or sign-in session have returned. Those items depend on the individual app’s backup, cloud-sync, or account-recovery system.
Before you start: the four checks that prevent most problems
Use the account that made the purchase
Check the email address of the Google Account that originally bought the app. Many people have more than one account on a phone, and Google Play shows a different purchase history for each one. Adding a new account does not move purchases into another account; Google Play cannot transfer content between Google Accounts.

Make sure the new phone is compatible
Ownership does not guarantee installation on every Android device. Google notes that content availability can vary by device. An app may be unavailable for the phone’s Android version, hardware, region, or other requirements, or the developer may no longer distribute it for that device.
Connect the phone to the internet
The Play Store must contact Google to display your entitlement and download the app. Use a working Wi‑Fi or mobile-data connection and leave enough storage for the installation. If the app is large, the download can take longer than the account check itself.
Keep the old phone available if you need its data
The Play Store’s reinstall process addresses app installation and ownership. It does not establish that data from the old phone will be copied. If the app contains important documents or saves, do not erase the old phone until you have checked that the app’s own backup or cloud-sync process has completed.

How do I restore purchased apps on my new Android phone?
These steps use the current Google Play Store path described by Google. Labels can look slightly different on a manufacturer’s Android interface, but the account, Manage apps & device, Manage, and Not installed controls are the relevant destinations.
- Add or select the purchasing account. During phone setup, add the Google Account that bought the app. If the account is already on the phone, open the account switcher in Google Play and select it.
- Open Google Play Store. Launch the Play Store app rather than a manufacturer’s app store, because the entitlement is recorded in Google Play.
- Open your account menu. Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Open the app manager. Tap Manage apps & device, then tap Manage.
- Show apps that are not on this phone. If the app is not in the visible list, change the device filter to Not installed. This filter displays apps associated with the selected Google Account that are not currently installed on the device.
- Choose the app. Select the previously purchased app from the list. Confirm that its name and publisher are the ones you expect before installing.
- Tap Install. Google Play should download the app without charging you again when the account and device are eligible.
- Open and verify it separately. Start the app and check whether it recognizes your account or synchronized content. If it opens as a blank or new installation, follow the app publisher’s documented recovery process rather than assuming the purchase was lost.
A built-in app that was turned off may show Enable instead of Install. Tap Enable to make that existing system app available again; downloading a second copy is not required.

Installing a purchased app from a computer
You can initiate an installation without searching on the new phone. This is useful when the phone’s Play Store is difficult to navigate or when you want to choose among several devices signed in to the same account.
- On a computer, go to play.google.com and sign in with the Google Account that made the purchase.
- Find the app using its name. Check the listing so you do not select a similarly named app.
- Choose Install.
- Select the destination Android device from the device list.
- Confirm by choosing Install again.
The computer method still depends on compatibility and the correct Google Account. It sends the installation request to the selected device; it does not transfer the purchase to a different account or guarantee recovery of the app’s old data.

For one or two apps, manual installation gives the clearest confirmation. For several devices, sync or the computer workflow can reduce repeated searching, but verify the destination and account before accepting an installation.
Why is Google Play asking me to buy the app again?
Do not immediately purchase a second copy. A renewed payment prompt usually means Google Play is not seeing the original entitlement in the account currently active in the Store.
Switch to the original purchasing account
Tap the Play Store profile icon and select another Google Account already on the phone. Return to Manage apps & device > Manage, choose Not installed, and look again. If the account is not on the phone, add it through the phone’s account settings, then reopen Google Play.

Confirm that the original purchase was actually made on Google Play
An app obtained through another store, a carrier arrangement, a direct developer payment, or a work-managed account may not appear as a Google Play purchase. Use the store or account that processed that transaction instead of assuming every Android purchase is shared by Google Play.
Do not try to merge accounts
Google Play does not transfer purchased content between Google Accounts. If the app was bought under a different account, switch to that account to reinstall it. If it was purchased on the wrong account, Google suggests contacting the app developer; the developer may offer a refund, but that outcome is not guaranteed by the reinstall process.
What to do when the app is missing from the Not installed list
Check the account first
The most common explanation is that the Play Store is using a different account. Open the profile menu, test each relevant account, and revisit Not installed. A purchase can be visible under the account that paid for it while absent under an account added later.
Search the app listing directly
Use the Play Store search field while the purchasing account is selected. If the listing opens, its page may show an installation option, a compatibility warning, or an indication that it is unavailable. If no listing appears, the developer or Google Play may no longer distribute it to that account or device.
Check the target device’s eligibility
Google cautions that some content is not available on all devices. A previously owned app can therefore be absent or blocked on a new phone even though the account still owns it. The support guidance does not promise restoration for an app that has been discontinued or is incompatible with the target phone.

Look for a disabled built-in app
If the app came with the phone, it may not be listed as a new download. In the app manager, an available system app can present Enable. Enabling it restores access to the existing app package rather than purchasing or downloading it again.

These messages describe the new device’s eligibility, not necessarily a lost purchase. Google Play can restrict an app because the developer has not made it available for that device or because the app no longer meets the phone’s software or hardware requirements.
- Read the Play Store message exactly; “not compatible” and “not available” can lead to different causes.
- Check that you selected the intended device when installing from a computer.
- Try the app’s direct Play Store listing while signed in to the purchasing account.
- If Google Play still blocks installation, do not pay again expecting that to override the restriction.
Google’s reinstall guidance establishes eligibility on compatible devices, but it does not guarantee a download for discontinued software or every model of Android phone.
Installing the app is not the same as restoring its old data
A successful install gives you the app package. It may not bring back local databases, game progress, downloaded media, preferences, or a previous sign-in state. Google Play’s ownership and reinstall instructions do not specify how any particular app backs up its data.
Use the app’s own account or cloud option
After installation, sign in with the same in-app account used on the old phone if the publisher provides account-based synchronization. Look for the app’s documented backup, restore, export, or cloud-sync controls. These controls differ by app, so there is no universal Android setting that guarantees recovery of every app’s content.
Keep expectations clear for local-only data
If an app stored information only on the old phone and offered no backup or account sync, reinstalling it may start with an empty profile. The Play Store’s Not installed list records app ownership and availability, not a complete copy of each app’s private files.
Do not erase the old phone prematurely
Leave the old device intact while you test the new installation and complete any app-specific export or synchronization. Once the app’s own recovery process is confirmed, you can follow your normal secure-erase procedure for the old phone.
Restoring several apps or using several Android devices
For a large collection, work through Manage apps & device > Manage > Not installed and install the apps you still need. You do not have to buy each eligible app again when the same purchasing account is selected.

Review which devices are selected so an installation is sent to the intended phone.
When several accounts are present, process one account at a time. Mixing account lists can make a legitimately purchased app appear missing or can lead to an unnecessary second purchase attempt.
A quick decision path for common outcomes

Final checklist before you consider the restoration complete
- The new phone is signed in to the Google Account that paid for the app.
- The Play Store profile menu shows that account as active.
- You checked Manage apps & device > Manage > Not installed.
- You installed the app, or enabled it when it was a disabled built-in app.
- You confirmed that the app is compatible with the new phone.
- You tested the app’s own sign-in, backup, or synchronization process if old content matters.
- You did not repurchase the app merely because another Google Account was active.
The practical rule is simple: restore the entitlement with the original Google Account, install only when the new device is eligible, and treat the app’s data as a separate recovery task.
