How to Restore Pixel Camera Features After Turning Off AI

There is no documented, universal “turn AI back on” switch for Pixel cameras. Restore the specific feature you disabled: open its own setting, meet its prerequisites, and only then troubleshoot the Camera app if the control still fails. For Camera Coach, the path is Camera > Camera Coach > Turn on. Camera Coach also requires an internet connection, a supported rear-camera mode, and Guided Frame turned off.

Start by identifying what disappeared

Pixel’s computational photography is not controlled by one master switch in Google’s published camera instructions. “Turning off AI” can mean disabling Camera Coach, changing RAW/JPEG capture, turning off a Google Photos editing tool, or experiencing a camera-app failure that only looks like a feature setting. The correct recovery path depends on the named feature, your Pixel model, Android build, Pixel Camera version, and sometimes your region.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Write down the exact symptom before changing anything else. A missing Camera Coach button, absent RAW option, unavailable editing control, and blurry or crashing camera require different fixes. Resetting the entire app will not make an ineligible feature appear, while changing a feature setting will not repair a damaged app installation.

RAW + JPEG option or RAW files Capture-format setting Camera settings, then photo-mode controls Availability varies by model; the documented control step is not required on Pixel 8 Pro
A Google Photos editing or media feature Separate media workflow The relevant control in Google Photos or the associated app Camera settings do not govern every Pixel media feature
Camera opens but is slow, crashes, or produces abnormal results App or system fault Restart, cache, updates, and safe mode Do not assume an AI setting caused the failure

Restore Camera Coach

Turn the feature on

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Tap Camera Coach.
  3. Choose Turn on.

Google documents Camera Coach as off by default. Turning it on restores the feature itself; it does not act as a global switch for every computational camera or photo function.

Meet Camera Coach’s operating requirements

  • Use a network connection. Camera Coach needs internet access. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data network and try the control again.
  • Use the rear camera. Camera Coach is documented for the rear camera rather than every camera view.
  • Use a supported mode. The supported modes listed by Google are Default Camera, Portrait, and Night Sight. A different mode can make the control unavailable without indicating that the feature is permanently removed.
  • Check Guided Frame. Guided Frame can conflict with Camera Coach. If Guided Frame is enabled, open Camera > Settings > Advanced > Guided Frame and turn it off when appropriate. Return to the rear camera in a supported mode and check Camera Coach again.

When Camera Coach is grayed out

A gray Camera Coach control is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof that AI has been disabled throughout the phone. Check the network first, then switch to the rear camera and one of the supported modes. If Guided Frame is on, disable it under the Advanced settings path above. Close and reopen Camera after changing the prerequisites so the app can reevaluate eligibility.

If the control remains unavailable after those checks, record the exact Pixel model, Android version, Pixel Camera version, selected camera, mode, and whether the phone is online. Feature availability can differ between models, software builds, and regions; those details are necessary when a menu label or eligibility rule differs from the documented path.

Restore RAW + JPEG capture

Enable the RAW/JPEG control

RAW capture is a file-format option, not a universal “AI off” mode. Google’s camera settings instructions describe enabling the RAW/JPEG control in Camera settings and then selecting RAW + JPEG in photo mode. On Pixel 8 Pro, Google notes that the control-enabling step is not required, so the option may already be available in the photo-mode interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Camera and enter its settings.
  2. Enable the RAW/JPEG control if your model presents that switch.
  3. Return to photo mode.
  4. Select RAW + JPEG from the capture-format control.
  5. Take a test image and confirm that both the JPEG and RAW files are present in the location your phone uses for camera captures.

Menu placement and wording can vary by Pixel model and Camera version. If you cannot find the control, verify the model and app version before concluding that a prior AI change removed it.

What RAW + JPEG does—and does not establish

The documented setting tells the camera to save an additional RAW file alongside a JPEG. It does not state that every computational operation is disabled, that the preview becomes unprocessed, or that the JPEG loses Pixel’s normal processing. A community explanation describes RAW as a less-processed file for additional editing latitude, but that user-contributed explanation is not a blanket Google guarantee about all processing stages.

Use RAW + JPEG when you need the additional file for your own workflow. Do not use it as evidence that all AI or computational photography has been switched off. If your goal is to restore a missing camera feature rather than change file format, return to the feature’s own control instead.

Separate camera controls from Pixel media features

Pixel’s AI-related capabilities span more than the live camera view. Google’s official Pixel feature material discusses functions such as Audio Magic Eraser and document scanning, while the Camera app has its own capture and guidance controls. A change made in one app will not automatically restore a capability in another.

If the missing feature belongs to Google Photos

Open Google Photos and identify the exact editing tool that is missing. Look for that tool’s own settings, eligibility notice, or app update rather than searching Camera settings for a global AI switch. Availability may depend on the device, account, app version, language, region, or the type of file being edited. If the control is absent only for one image, check whether that file meets the tool’s requirements before changing Camera configuration.

If document scanning or another camera-adjacent tool disappeared

Confirm which app supplied the feature and whether you are using the same camera or document mode as before. A document-scanning workflow can have separate entry points and requirements from ordinary photo capture. Restore it through that workflow’s control; changing RAW/JPEG or Camera Coach will not substitute for it.

Choose the least disruptive restoration route

Use the narrowest fix that matches the symptom. A feature switch changes one capability and normally preserves the rest of your Camera configuration. A cache clear removes temporary app data. Clearing storage is broader because it resets Camera preferences, and reverting updates changes the installed app version. These actions are not interchangeable.

Route Use it when What it changes What it cannot do
Feature-specific switch A named control is off or hidden by a prerequisite That feature’s enabled state Repair a crashing app or damaged hardware
Network, mode, or Guided Frame correction Camera Coach is gray or unavailable Eligibility conditions for Camera Coach Restore unrelated Photos tools or RAW support
Restart, cache, update, safe mode Camera is slow, unstable, or unresponsive Temporary state, app files, software compatibility, or third-party interference Make an unsupported feature appear
Clear storage or revert updates Earlier troubleshooting fails Camera preferences or installed Camera version Repair a damaged lens or sensor

After each action, repeat the same test: use the same camera, mode, subject, and feature. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the restoration worked or whether a prerequisite is still missing.

Troubleshoot the Camera app in Google’s order

Use the following sequence when the correct setting is enabled but Camera still behaves incorrectly. Perform one step at a time and retest so you know which action changed the result.

  1. Restart the phone. Power the Pixel off and on, then open Camera and test the affected feature.
  2. Clear Camera’s cache. Open Android Settings, find the Camera app in the app list, open its storage controls, and choose the option to clear cached data. This removes temporary files rather than your saved photos and videos.
  3. Install available updates. Check for updates to Pixel Camera and Android. A feature can fail because the app and operating system are on incompatible or outdated builds.
  4. Test in safe mode. Start the phone in Android safe mode and test Camera. Safe mode temporarily prevents downloaded apps from running. If the problem disappears there, a third-party app is a likely source of interference; remove or disable recently installed or updated apps one at a time after returning to normal mode.

Do not skip directly to a full reset when a cache clear or update resolves the problem. A setting restoration and an app diagnostic are separate operations, so keep the feature enabled while you test the app.

Use the deeper image-quality recovery steps for persistent problems

Check the physical shooting conditions

  • Confirm that nothing covers the lens area, including a case edge, film, or accessory.
  • Clean the lens area with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and liquids entering the phone.
  • Retest in adequate light and with a stable subject. A dark scene, movement, or a reflective surface can look like processing failure even when the app is functioning normally.

Reset Camera’s app data only when simpler steps fail

Google’s quality guide lists clearing Camera storage as a deeper recovery action after simpler checks. Clearing storage resets the Camera app’s configuration, so you may need to set preferences again. Google says this action does not delete saved photos and videos, but verify that important media is backed up before performing any reset.

Revert Camera updates as a last software step

If the problem began after a Camera update and the preceding actions did not help, Google’s guide includes uninstalling Camera updates and restarting. This returns the app to the version supplied with the system; update it again later when a compatible release is available. Because this changes the installed app version, note your current version and the date the failure began before proceeding.

Tell a setting problem from a hardware problem

A setting problem usually affects one named feature and follows the feature’s eligibility rules: Camera Coach is unavailable only in an unsupported mode, or RAW/JPEG is missing until its control is enabled. An app problem affects launching, responsiveness, crashes, or several camera functions at once and often responds to restart, cache, updates, or safe mode.

Hardware or physical obstruction becomes more plausible when every mode produces the same focus failure, visible lens damage, persistent artifacts, or a camera that cannot initialize after software troubleshooting. The software steps above cannot repair a damaged sensor or lens. Document the symptom, model, Android and Camera versions, and the steps already completed before seeking device support.

Account for model, software, and region differences

Pixel menus are not identical across generations. The RAW/JPEG instructions explicitly differ for Pixel 8 Pro, and other controls can move as the Camera app changes. Android build, Pixel Camera version, language, account state, and region can also affect labels and availability. Treat a missing menu as an eligibility or version question until those variables are checked.

When asking for help, provide:

  • Exact Pixel model and storage configuration if relevant.
  • Android version and security-update level.
  • Pixel Camera version.
  • Country or region and the Google account type used.
  • The affected feature, camera (front or rear), and shooting mode.
  • Whether the phone had network access and whether Guided Frame was enabled.
  • What happened after restart, cache clearing, updates, and safe-mode testing.

Those details prevent a Camera Coach answer from being incorrectly applied to RAW capture or a Google Photos feature.

Keep a short troubleshooting record

Before escalating, make a simple note of the original symptom and each test result. Record whether Camera Coach was visible, whether it was gray or selectable, which network was active, which camera and mode were selected, and whether Guided Frame was enabled. For RAW, record whether the control was missing, whether RAW + JPEG could be selected, and whether a test shot produced both files.

Also note the order of restart, cache clearing, updates, safe-mode testing, storage clearing, or update reversal. This prevents repeating a disruptive step and gives support a reproducible description. If the issue changes after an update or only occurs in one mode, include that distinction rather than describing the problem generally as “AI is broken.”

A compact restoration checklist

  1. Name the missing feature instead of treating “AI” as one switch.
  2. Open that feature’s own control and restore it.
  3. Check prerequisites such as network access, camera selection, supported mode, and Guided Frame.
  4. For RAW capture, enable RAW/JPEG control where required and choose RAW + JPEG in photo mode.
  5. Restart the phone, clear Camera cache, update Pixel Camera and Android, and test safe mode if the app still fails.
  6. For image-quality issues, inspect lighting and lens obstruction before clearing storage or reverting updates.
  7. Record model, versions, region, and exact symptoms if the feature remains unavailable.

Common mistakes to avoid

Looking for a master AI toggle

Google’s published controls are feature-specific. Searching for one switch can lead you to disable unrelated settings or reset the app unnecessarily.

Assuming RAW means unprocessed photos

RAW + JPEG adds a file format; the documentation does not promise that all computational processing is disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring Camera Coach eligibility

No internet connection, the wrong camera, an unsupported mode, or Guided Frame can explain a gray control without any permanent removal.

Resetting app data first

Storage clearing resets preferences and should follow restart, cache, update, and safe-mode checks. It is not a replacement for enabling the feature you actually need.

What to expect after a successful restore

Camera Coach should be selectable from Camera when its prerequisites are met. RAW + JPEG should expose the format choice and create both file types for a test capture when the model supports it. A normally functioning Camera app should open and respond after restart, cache maintenance, and updates. If only one feature remains absent while the rest of Camera works, treat that as an availability or eligibility issue and provide the model and software details to Google support rather than repeating global resets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one Pixel setting that turns all camera AI back on?

No universal restoration switch is documented. Pixel exposes separate controls for features such as Camera Coach and RAW/JPEG capture, while Google Photos tools have their own workflows. Identify the missing feature and restore it through that feature’s setting instead of resetting every camera option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Camera Coach missing or gray after I turn it on?

Check that the phone has internet access, the rear camera is selected, and the mode is Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight. Guided Frame can also conflict with Camera Coach; turn it off at Camera > Settings > Advanced > Guided Frame, then close and reopen Camera.

Does Camera Coach work with the front camera or every shooting mode?

Google’s documented requirements specify the rear camera and the Default Camera, Portrait, and Night Sight modes. A different camera or mode can make Camera Coach unavailable without meaning that the feature was permanently removed.

Does selecting RAW + JPEG disable Pixel’s computational processing?

No such blanket promise appears in Google’s settings instructions. RAW + JPEG saves an additional RAW file alongside a JPEG. The JPEG can still receive the camera’s normal processing, and the documentation does not establish that every computational operation or the preview is disabled.

Will clearing Camera storage delete my photos and videos?

Google’s troubleshooting guidance says clearing Camera storage resets the app configuration but does not delete saved photos and videos. It does remove preferences, so you may need to configure Camera again. Back up important media before using this deeper reset step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I uninstall Camera updates immediately if a feature disappeared?

No. First restore the feature-specific setting and check its prerequisites. For app faults, Google’s sequence is restart, clear cache, install available Camera and Android updates, and test safe mode. Uninstalling Camera updates is a later step when those measures fail, followed by a restart.

Why do instructions differ between Pixel models?

Camera menus and feature eligibility can vary by Pixel model, Android build, Pixel Camera version, and region. Google specifically notes that Pixel 8 Pro does not require the same RAW/JPEG control-enabling step. Check your exact model and software before concluding that a control has been removed.

What information should I give Google support if the feature stays unavailable?

Provide the exact Pixel model, Android and Pixel Camera versions, region, affected feature, front or rear camera, selected mode, network status, Guided Frame status, and the results of restarting, clearing cache, updating, and safe-mode testing. Those details distinguish an eligibility issue from an app or hardware fault.

The Bottom Line

Restore the named Pixel feature through its own control, not through a fictional master AI switch. For Camera Coach, turn it on from Camera, use the rear camera in Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight, keep an internet connection active, and disable Guided Frame if necessary. For RAW, enable RAW/JPEG control where required and choose RAW + JPEG. If the app still fails, follow Google’s sequence of restart, cache clearing, updates, safe mode, and only then deeper resets.
