What Microsoft Print to PDF does
Microsoft Print to PDF is a Windows 11 optional feature that appears as a printer. When you select it from an app’s print dialog, Windows asks where to save the resulting PDF instead of sending pages to a physical printer. It is useful for saving documents, web pages, spreadsheets and other printable content as PDF files without installing a separate PDF printer.
Enabling the feature adds or restores the printer entry. Disabling it removes that Windows printer from print dialogs; it does not delete existing PDF files or prevent another PDF application from opening them. You do not need a physical printer, toner or a paid PDF product to perform either change.

The controls below apply to Windows 11. The exact wording or placement of a print command can vary by application, but the optional-feature name is Microsoft Print to PDF.
Enable or disable it in Windows Features
This is the straightforward graphical procedure recommended in Microsoft Q&A guidance. It works for both restoring a missing printer and intentionally turning the feature off.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. Windows opens the Windows Features dialog. - Scroll through the list and locate Microsoft Print to PDF.
- To enable it, select the checkbox. To disable it, clear the checkbox.
- Select OK. Windows will apply the change; restart the PC if Windows asks you to do so.
After enabling, open an application that can print, choose its Print command and look for Microsoft Print to PDF in the printer list. After disabling, the entry should no longer be offered in print dialogs.

A feature can remain selected in Windows Features while its printer entry is not visible. Microsoft Q&A guidance suggests refreshing the optional feature registration:

optionalfeatureswith Windows+R. - Clear Microsoft Print to PDF and select OK to apply the removal.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then open the Windows Features dialog again.
- Select Microsoft Print to PDF and select OK to add it back.
- Restart if prompted, then check the printer list from a print dialog.
Toggling the feature off and back on is a documented community troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed fix. If the entry remains absent, determine whether the failure is limited to one application or affects Windows printing generally before changing more settings.
Command-line alternatives
DISM and PowerShell can enable or disable the same optional feature from an elevated terminal. They are useful for administrators, scripted repairs or systems where the Windows Features dialog does not complete the change. An elevated terminal means opening the command prompt or PowerShell with administrator rights and approving the User Account Control prompt.

The available guidance does not establish that a command-line method is universally more reliable than Windows Features. Use one method at a time, allow it to finish, and restart when Windows requests it.
Enable with DISM
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. One way is to search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Enter
dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:"Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features"and press Enter. - Wait for DISM to report completion, then restart if requested.
- Test for Microsoft Print to PDF from an application’s print dialog.
The command targets the online Windows installation (the running system) and the feature name used by Windows. If DISM reports an error, do not assume the printer itself is defective; continue with the version and general-printing checks below.
Toggle it with PowerShell
- Open Windows PowerShell as administrator.
- To disable the feature, run
Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features. - To enable it again, run
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features. - Restart if prompted and test the printer.
These PowerShell commands are listed in a later Microsoft Q&A response for some Windows 11 24H2 situations. That response is labeled AI-generated, so use it as support guidance and verify any build-specific servicing advice against Microsoft’s current release-health information.

Confirm that PDF printing works
Once the feature is enabled, test it from a simple document rather than assuming that its presence proves the entire print path works.
- Open a document, web page or image in an application with a print command.
- Choose Print and select Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer.
- Review the page range, orientation, paper size and other settings offered by that application.
- Choose Print, select a destination and filename, and save the PDF.
- Open the saved file to confirm that it contains the expected pages and layout.
If the printer appears but saving fails, try a different destination such as your Documents folder and test another application. That separates an application or file problem from a missing Windows feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When enabling the feature does not solve printing
A missing printer entry and a failed print job are not always the same problem. Microsoft Support recommends isolating the failure before making additional changes.
Test another app or file
Print a different document from another application. If Microsoft Print to PDF works elsewhere, the original app, document, print settings or its integration with Windows is the likely area to investigate. Restart that application and confirm that the intended printer and page settings are selected.
Check whether all Windows printing is affected
If printing fails from multiple applications, follow general Windows printing troubleshooting:

- Restart the Print Spooler service, then retry the print job.
- Update or reinstall the relevant printer drivers when physical or network printers are also failing.
- Run the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter through Get Help.
- Restart the application and, if necessary, restart the PC.
These measures address printing problems generally. They do not prove that a particular spooler, driver or application issue caused a missing Microsoft Print to PDF entry. For Microsoft’s current sequence and interface labels, see Fix printing problems in Word, Excel, or other apps.
Check the feature again after general troubleshooting
Reopen optionalfeatures and verify the checkbox state. If it is clear, enable it and apply the change. If it is selected but absent from every print dialog, perform the documented off-and-on refresh, then test from more than one application. If the feature still cannot be applied, record the exact Windows error instead of repeatedly toggling it.
Windows 11 24H2 and error 0x800f0922
A later Microsoft Q&A response describes some Windows 11 24H2 cases in which changing this feature can produce error 0x800f0922. It lists the elevated PowerShell disable-and-enable commands shown above and points readers toward applicable servicing updates.
The response is explicitly labeled AI-generated, and the available guidance does not independently verify a particular knowledge-base number or promise that those commands fix every 24H2 installation. If you see 0x800f0922, note your Windows version and build, install only servicing updates offered through your normal Windows Update process, and check Microsoft’s release-health documentation for version-specific instructions before applying a manual workaround. Do not treat the error as evidence that a PDF file or physical printer is damaged. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion of the 24H2 scenario.

Keep it enabled when
- You regularly save printable content as PDF and want a Windows-provided printer entry.
- You need a simple PDF output option that does not depend on a physical printer.
- Applications you use already expose the printer correctly.
Disable it when
- Your organization manages which optional Windows features are available.
- You never use the printer and want a shorter, less cluttered printer list.
- You are isolating a print-pipeline problem and need to test behavior with the feature removed, then restored.
Disabling is reversible: return to Windows Features and select the checkbox again, or run the enable command from an elevated terminal. Existing PDFs remain available because the feature controls printing, not file storage.
Fast recovery checklist
- Open
optionalfeaturesand check whether Microsoft Print to PDF is selected. - Select or clear the box according to your goal, choose OK, and restart if prompted.
- If selected but missing, clear the box, apply it, then select it again and apply it.
- Test from another application and another file.
- If printing fails broadly, restart Print Spooler, use Get Help‘s printer troubleshooter, and restart the app or PC.
- For command-line administration, use the documented elevated DISM or PowerShell command and keep any exact error code for version-specific troubleshooting.
For most Windows 11 systems, the Windows Features dialog is the safest first choice: it makes the feature state visible and requires no command syntax. Elevated DISM or PowerShell is an alternative when you need repeatable administration or the graphical route does not complete.
