What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Opera does not have one master switch that rolls every interface change back at once. On the current desktop browser, restore the specific part you dislike: switch from vertical to horizontal tabs, hide or edit the sidebar, select the Classic theme, stop automatic Tab Islands, or disable tab previews. These controls are separate in Easy Setup and Settings, and the labels can differ in Opera GX, mobile Opera, and older desktop builds.
Identify which part of Opera changed
“Restore the old layout” can describe several unrelated changes. Start with the visual symptom rather than looking for a single rollback command. The current desktop controls are split by interface component.

| What you see | Control to change | Current desktop path |
|---|---|---|
| Tabs run down the left side | Tab orientation | Easy Setup > Layout > disable Use vertical tab strip |
| A fixed column of tools or services remains beside the page | Sidebar visibility and contents | Easy Setup > Show sidebar, then Settings > Sidebar > Manage sidebar |
| Colors, wallpaper, or light/dark styling looks unfamiliar | Theme and wallpaper | Easy Setup > Classic theme; wallpaper under Settings (Alt+P) > Customization > Wallpapers |
| Related tabs are grouped automatically | Automatic Tab Islands | Settings > Browser > User interface > Automatically create tab islands |
| A thumbnail or preview appears when the pointer rests on a tab | Tab hover previews | Settings > Browser > User interface > Show tab previews |
Changing one of these settings does not automatically change the others. For example, selecting a classic color scheme will not move a vertical tab strip, and hiding the sidebar will not stop Tab Islands.
Put tabs back across the top
Horizontal tabs are Opera’s traditional arrangement: each tab is displayed in a strip across the top of the browser window. Vertical tabs place that strip in a panel on the left. Opera describes horizontal tabs as the better fit for people who prefer a familiar browser layout or keep a relatively small number of tabs.
#1 Best Overall
Use Easy Setup
- Open Opera on the desktop.
- Click the three-bar Easy Setup button to the right of the address bar.
- In the Layout section, turn off Use vertical tab strip.
- Close Easy Setup. The tab row should return to the top of the window.
Use the tab context menu
If you cannot find the setting in Easy Setup, right-click any open tab and choose Use horizontal tab strip. This performs the same orientation change without opening the setup panel.
What the switch preserves
Opera says changing between horizontal and vertical layouts does not close or rearrange your open tabs. Your Tab Islands, Workspaces, pinned tabs, and the current browsing session remain in place. The setting changes where the tabs are drawn, not the browsing content stored in them.
When vertical tabs may still be preferable
Vertical tabs keep more of each tab title visible when many tabs are open. A horizontal strip has limited width, so titles can become abbreviated as the tab count rises. If seeing full or nearly full titles is more important than a traditional appearance, the left-side layout can be more practical. If you normally work with only a few tabs and want the familiar top strip, horizontal mode is the simpler choice.
Recommended Free Tools
Hide the sidebar or remove individual tools
The sidebar is independent of tab orientation. You can hide the entire column, or keep it and remove services and tools you never use.
Hide the complete sidebar
- Click the three-bar Easy Setup button beside the address bar.
- Find the sidebar option and turn off Show sidebar.
- Return to the page. The persistent sidebar should no longer occupy the edge of the browser window.
Manage only selected items
- Open Opera’s settings with Settings or the Alt+P shortcut.
- Open Sidebar.
- Select Manage sidebar.
- Deselect the services or tools you do not want displayed.
Opera’s browser-window help also documents pinning and unpinning the sidebar and a narrow-sidebar option. Those controls are useful when you want quick access to a small number of tools but do not want a full-width panel. A pinned sidebar stays available in the window; unpinning changes how it is exposed without changing your tabs.

If the sidebar seems to return
Check both levels of control. Show sidebar governs the column itself, while Manage sidebar governs the items inside it. Removing individual services does not necessarily hide the column, and hiding the column does not delete the services from Opera’s settings.
Choose a more traditional visual style
If the layout is acceptable but the colors, wallpaper, or interface tone are not, use Opera’s Classic theme rather than changing tab orientation.

- Choose Classic theme.
- Use the theme controls to adjust interface color, wallpaper, and light, dark, or system mode.
For direct wallpaper management, open Settings (Alt+P) > Customization > Wallpapers. This lets you change the background independently of the broader theme choice. Selecting light, dark, or system mode controls the interface’s appearance; it does not move tabs or alter sidebar behavior.
Stop Opera from creating Tab Islands automatically
Tab Islands group related tabs into a visual unit. If the grouping itself is the new behavior you want to remove, change the automatic-creation setting rather than switching layouts.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Browser.
- Open the User interface section.
- Turn off Automatically create tab islands.
This setting addresses automatic grouping. It is separate from the tab strip’s position, the sidebar, and the theme, so those features can remain unchanged.

Turn off tab hover previews
Opera also treats tab previews as an independent user-interface option. If a thumbnail or other preview appears when you hover over a tab, disable it here:

Disabling previews affects the hover behavior; it does not change whether tabs are horizontal or vertical and does not remove the tabs themselves.
Restore the earlier arrangement inside vertical tabs
Opera revised its vertical-tab layout in a September 10, 2026 newsroom post. In that revision, the New tab button and the newest tabs moved to the top of the vertical strip. Opera said users who preferred the previous arrangement could restore it in Easy Setup.
If your complaint is specifically about that order, keep vertical tabs enabled and open Easy Setup to look for the vertical-tab arrangement control. Choose the option for the previous arrangement rather than disabling the entire vertical tab strip. The exact wording can vary with the desktop build, so use the visible description in your version.
Opera reported that more than 73% of surveyed Vertical Tabs users opened new tabs by clicking the New tab button. The figure came from a survey of 4,900 Opera One desktop users conducted in August and September 2026. It explains why Opera moved the button, but it does not determine which arrangement is best for your workflow.

There is no data-loss trade-off between the two orientations. The practical choice is screen geometry and scanning preference: a top strip feels familiar and leaves the left edge free for page content, while a vertical panel gives tab names more persistent width when a session becomes crowded.

The option is not where the instructions say
These paths describe current desktop Opera controls. Opera GX, mobile Opera, and older desktop builds can use different labels or omit a control entirely. Confirm the product name and version before treating a missing option as a fault. A setting documented for Opera One desktop should not be assumed to exist in a mobile build.
Horizontal tabs did not appear
Verify that Use vertical tab strip is disabled in Easy Setup. If Easy Setup does not show the control, right-click a tab and look for Use horizontal tab strip. The context-menu command is an alternative path to the same orientation setting.
The sidebar is still visible
Use Easy Setup’s Show sidebar switch for the whole column. If the column is present but only certain icons are unwanted, open Settings > Sidebar > Manage sidebar and deselect those items. Pinning, unpinning, and the narrow-sidebar choice change presentation, so check those controls if the sidebar is present in a different width or state than expected.
Tabs still group themselves
Go directly to Settings > Browser > User interface and check Automatically create tab islands. Do not expect changing the theme or hiding the sidebar to affect grouping; each feature has its own control.

Previews keep appearing
In the same User interface section, check Show tab previews. Tab previews are controlled separately from Tab Islands, so disabling automatic grouping will not disable hover thumbnails.
You want every old element back at once
Opera’s official documentation does not describe a universal switch that restores every earlier interface element. Apply the individual controls for tabs, sidebar, theme, Tab Islands, and previews. If a particular element has no corresponding control in your build, its availability may be version-specific rather than part of a hidden global rollback.
A safe order for changing several parts
When several changes arrived together, make one adjustment at a time so you can identify the setting that produced the result you want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Decide whether the main issue is tab position, sidebar presence, visual styling, grouping, or previews.
- Change that component using its documented Easy Setup or Settings path.
- Look at the browser window before changing another component. Switching tab orientation should leave the current session intact, making it easy to evaluate the result.
- If the remaining problem is visual rather than structural, use Classic theme and wallpaper controls instead of changing the tab layout again.
- For a crowded session, compare title visibility and available page width before settling on horizontal or vertical tabs.
This approach avoids treating unrelated symptoms as one problem and preserves the parts of Opera’s current interface that are useful to you.
