How to restore missing Android Auto features after an update

If Android Auto lost an app, stopped connecting, or no longer shows a feature after an update, fix the problem in this order: identify exactly what disappeared, check Android Auto’s launcher settings, re-enable any app disabled by Samsung battery management, restart and clear cache, verify Bluetooth or replace the USB cable, then check the car’s compatibility and firmware. A feature that has not reached your country, vehicle, phone model, or language cannot be restored by changing a launcher setting; Google rolls some newer features out from its servers over time.

First identify what actually disappeared

“Android Auto disappeared” can describe several unrelated failures. A hidden launcher tile is a settings problem; an app disabled by the phone is a battery-management problem; a failed wired connection is often a USB cable or vehicle problem; and an assistant feature may simply be in a staged rollout. Start with the symptom that matches your case instead of reinstalling everything.

What you see Most likely area First check
The car connects, but one app or tile is missing Android Auto launcher customization or an app disabled on the phone Open Android Auto settings and inspect Customize launcher; Samsung users should also open the missing app and check battery-management settings
Android Auto no longer connects over USB Cable, USB port, phone software, or head-unit state Restart both devices, then try a short direct data cable with no hub or extension
Wireless Android Auto connects but calls or messages do not work Bluetooth profile or pairing state Confirm the car’s Bluetooth Calls and Audio switches are enabled
Nothing appears on the car screen Compatibility, Android Auto being disabled in the receiver, firmware, or pairing Check the vehicle or stereo settings and its supported Android version
A newer assistant or Gemini feature is absent Server-side rollout or regional, device, vehicle, or language limitation Check Google’s current availability information; an update does not guarantee immediate access

Keep the phone unlocked while performing the first connection and make sure the car is parked. If you have access to another compatible vehicle or phone, testing it can separate a phone-side failure from a vehicle-side failure without deleting data.

Restore a hidden app or tile in Android Auto

Android Auto maintains its own launcher list. Hiding an app there does not uninstall the app from the phone, and installing a new Android Auto version can leave the customized order unchanged. Google documents the following path on current Android versions:

  1. On the phone, open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Open Connection preferences.
  4. Tap Android Auto. If the menu is difficult to find, search Settings for Android Auto.
  5. Choose Customize launcher.
  6. Clear the hidden or disabled selection for the missing app. Drag the app to the position you want in the car launcher.
  7. Exit Settings, disconnect Android Auto, and start a new connection. Android Auto needs to restart before the changed list appears on the vehicle display.

Use this check even when the app icon is visible on the phone. The phone’s app drawer and Android Auto’s launcher are separate lists. If the app does not appear in Customize launcher at all, continue with the phone-side checks below; it may be disabled, incompatible with driving use, or not installed for the current user profile.

Re-enable apps that Samsung put to sleep

Samsung phones can automatically disable apps that have not been used. Google notes that such an app can remain visible on the phone in some cases while being unavailable in the Android Auto App Launcher until it is re-enabled. This is different from hiding a tile in Customize launcher.

Open the app once

Find the missing navigation, media, or messaging app in the phone’s app drawer and open it. Sign in if the app requests an account, accept any permission prompt, and leave it installed. Then reconnect Android Auto and inspect Customize launcher again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off automatic disabling

Samsung’s labels vary by One UI version. In Settings, search for Auto-disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep, then turn that automation off or remove the relevant Android Auto app from its sleeping or deep-sleep list. Open the app once more after changing the setting. Battery optimization can be useful for rarely used apps, but it conflicts with an app you expect Android Auto to launch during a drive.

If the app still does not return, check that it is updated from Google Play, that it supports Android Auto, and that a work-profile or parental-control policy has not blocked it. Do not assume that clearing Android Auto data will fix a disabled third-party app; correct the app’s enabled state first.

Restart Android Auto and clear its cache

An update can leave stale temporary data in either the phone service or the vehicle receiver. A restart is quick and does not remove your Android Auto settings. Turn the phone completely off and on, then restart the infotainment system using the vehicle’s normal power or reboot control. Some receivers require the car to be locked and switched off for several minutes before they fully power down.

Samsung cache procedure

  1. Open Settings on the Galaxy phone.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select Android Auto.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Choose Clear cache, not Clear data.
  6. Install any Android, One UI, Android Auto, and relevant app updates that are offered.
  7. Restart the phone and reconnect to the car.

Clearing cache removes temporary files; it does not erase your navigation destinations or uninstall the service. Avoid repeatedly clearing data, resetting the phone, or removing every app before checking the cable and vehicle. Those actions add setup work and can hide the original cause.

Fix wireless Android Auto and Bluetooth features

Wireless Android Auto uses Wi-Fi for the projection connection and Bluetooth for initial pairing and calling functions. A car can appear paired while one of its Bluetooth profiles is turned off.

  1. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the paired car.
  2. Confirm that Calls and Audio are enabled for that device.
  3. In the vehicle’s Bluetooth menu, confirm the phone is authorized for calls and media, not merely listed as a remembered device.
  4. Restart both the phone and infotainment system, then try Android Auto again.

If Calls or Audio cannot be enabled, remove the car from the phone’s paired-device list and delete the phone from the car’s list. Pair them again while parked, accept every contacts, call-history, and notification permission that you need, and then launch Android Auto. Re-pairing is preferable to repeatedly tapping a disabled switch because it rebuilds the Bluetooth profiles.

Wireless support has stricter requirements than most wired setups. Google lists Android 11 or later for wireless Android Auto, with select newer vehicles and compatible phones also required. A phone that worked by cable may therefore be unable to use wireless projection after an update if its Android version, vehicle, or receiver does not meet those requirements.

Replace the USB cable for a wired connection

For a setup that worked previously and then stopped, Google’s first-line advice is to replace the USB cable. Use a high-quality USB data cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter), connect it directly to the vehicle’s data-capable USB port, and do not use a hub, extension, adapter chain, or charge-only lead. A cable can continue charging the phone while its data lines have failed, making this symptom especially confusing.

Choose and test the cable

  • Prefer the cable supplied with the phone when it has a data-capable connector.
  • Otherwise use a USB-IF-certified cable with the correct USB-C or USB-A connector for both ends.
  • Keep the cable under 1 meter and avoid kinks, loose plugs, and damaged insulation.
  • Try the car’s other USB port only if the owner’s manual identifies it as the Android Auto or data port; many vehicles have charge-only ports.
  • Connect the phone directly. Do not pass through a dashboard hub or extension.

When the new cable restores the connection, the old cable was the limiting component even if it still charged the phone. If several known-good short data cables fail in the same port, test the phone with another compatible vehicle or test another Android phone in your car. That comparison points toward a damaged port, receiver firmware, or phone USB setting rather than another cable purchase.

Check the vehicle or aftermarket receiver

Android Auto depends on the head unit as much as on the phone. Confirm that the exact model and model year of the car or aftermarket receiver supports Android Auto, that Android Auto is enabled in its settings, and that its firmware is current. An infotainment update can reset the projection option or change which USB port is data-capable.

Vehicle-side checklist

  • Park the car and open the receiver’s phone-projection or Android Auto menu.
  • Enable Android Auto if a toggle was reset after an update.
  • Install the receiver firmware supplied by the vehicle or stereo manufacturer, following its instructions.
  • Restart the infotainment system after changing the setting.
  • Use the owner’s manual to verify the correct USB port and whether wireless projection is supported.
  • Check whether another phone is already connected and occupying the projection session.

If the phone is being connected to a second car, Android Auto stores prior vehicle associations. On the phone, open Android Auto settings, select Previously connected cars, choose Forget all cars, and pair the desired vehicle again. This removes saved vehicle associations, so use it only when ordinary reconnecting and a cable swap have not solved the problem.

Verify Android version and Android Auto requirements

Google lists Android 9 or later for most wired Android Auto connections. Wireless Android Auto generally requires Android 11 or later, plus a compatible vehicle or receiver and phone. Android Auto is built into phones running Android 10 and later, so the absence of a separate Android Auto launcher icon does not mean the service was uninstalled.

Connection or feature Requirement stated by Google What to do
Most wired connections Android 9 or later, with a compatible car or receiver Use a direct short data cable and verify receiver support
Wireless Android Auto Android 11 or later, plus supported phone and vehicle or receiver Check Bluetooth profiles, Wi-Fi capability, and vehicle compatibility
Phones on Android 10 or later Android Auto is integrated into the operating system Look in Connected devices or search Settings instead of looking for a standalone app icon
New assistant features, including the Gemini transition Server-side availability varies by country, OEM, device, and language Wait for eligibility or use the features currently supported in your region and vehicle

These are minimum platform requirements, not a guarantee that every app or feature will work. The vehicle’s certification, receiver firmware, phone manufacturer software, app permissions, and country can impose additional limits.

Understand staged feature rollouts

Not every missing feature is broken. Google says the transition to Gemini on Android Auto is a server-side update rolling out over time. Availability can vary by country, original-equipment manufacturer, device, and language. A phone update may therefore change the interface or prepare the service without immediately enabling the feature you expected.

Use the rollout explanation when the connection is stable, existing launcher apps work, and only a newly announced assistant capability is absent. Reinstalling Android Auto, clearing all app data, or buying a new cable cannot force a server-side entitlement. Keep Google Play services and the relevant apps current, use a supported language and account, and check Google’s current Android Auto product information for availability in your market. Treat feature behavior as changeable: Google’s developer information was marked last updated May 28, 2025, and Samsung’s troubleshooting result was shown as updated October 7, 2026, so menu labels and rollout timing can change.

Wired versus wireless: choose the right recovery path

Consideration Wired Android Auto Wireless Android Auto
Primary connection USB data cable to the vehicle’s supported port Bluetooth pairing plus the vehicle’s wireless projection connection
Fastest first fix Replace with a direct, high-quality cable shorter than 1 meter Rebuild Bluetooth pairing and verify Calls and Audio profiles
Typical failure clues Phone charges but Android Auto does not launch; connection drops when the cable moves Car remains paired but calls, audio, or projection fails
Platform threshold Google lists Android 9 or later for most wired connections Google lists Android 11 or later, with compatible vehicles and phones
Trade-off More predictable data path, but dependent on cable condition and port fit No cable during driving, but more dependent on pairing, wireless support, and receiver firmware

If both modes are available, test wired first. It removes wireless pairing variables and provides a clear test of the phone, receiver, and account. Once wired projection works, troubleshoot wireless pairing separately rather than changing several variables at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone-side versus vehicle-side diagnosis

Test result What it suggests Next action
The missing tile returns after Customize launcher is changed Only the Android Auto launcher list was customized Leave the launcher order as desired and reconnect to confirm it persists
Opening the app and disabling Samsung sleep controls restores it Samsung battery management had disabled the app Keep the app out of automatic sleep and open it periodically
A new short cable works immediately The original cable or its connector was failing Retire the old cable and keep the direct connection free of hubs
Another phone works in the same car and port The first phone’s software, permissions, USB port, or compatibility is implicated Update the phone, review Android Auto settings, and test its port with another data accessory
The same phone fails in another compatible car The phone or Android Auto service is implicated Restart, clear cache, update, and review Android version and app permissions
No compatible phone works in the car Receiver setting, firmware, USB port, or compatibility is implicated Enable Android Auto in the head unit, update firmware, and contact the vehicle or receiver support channel

Change one variable at a time and note the result. For example, do not clear cache, forget every car, replace the cable, and switch Bluetooth profiles simultaneously; you will not know which action fixed the failure and may create unnecessary re-pairing work.

A complete recovery sequence

Use this ordered sequence when you are unsure which symptom applies. It moves from reversible settings to hardware and compatibility checks.

  1. Identify whether the problem is a missing launcher item, a disabled phone app, a wired failure, a wireless call or audio failure, a vehicle connection failure, or an unavailable new feature.
  2. Open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher. Unhide the app and restore its order.
  3. If the phone is a Samsung, open the missing app and disable Auto-disable unused apps or remove the app from Put unused apps to sleep.
  4. Restart the phone and infotainment system. On a Galaxy phone, clear Android Auto’s cache through Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear cache.
  5. Install available phone, Android Auto, Google Play services, app, and receiver firmware updates.
  6. For wireless use, verify Bluetooth Calls and Audio, then unpair and pair again if those switches cannot be enabled.
  7. For wired use, replace the cable with a short, high-quality USB data cable under 3 feet (1 meter), connected directly without a hub or extension.
  8. Confirm the vehicle or receiver supports Android Auto, that the feature is enabled, and that the correct USB port is being used.
  9. If moving to another car, use Previously connected cars > Forget all cars and complete a fresh pairing.
  10. Check Android-version and rollout limits before treating an absent newer assistant feature as a fault.

What not to do

  • Do not judge the service by the absence of a standalone icon on an Android 10-or-later phone; Android Auto is integrated there.
  • Do not use a charge-only cable, a long extension, or a USB hub and expect a stable data connection.
  • Do not repeatedly clear app data or factory-reset the phone before testing the cable and receiver.
  • Do not assume every Android Auto-compatible phone supports every wireless mode or newly released assistant capability.
  • Do not treat a staged server-side rollout as something a local setting can force.

When to seek vehicle or phone support

Contact the vehicle or receiver manufacturer when no compatible phone can connect, the Android Auto option is missing from the head unit, the correct USB port has no data function, or a firmware update fails. Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier when the phone cannot connect to multiple known-compatible vehicles after the cache, cable, pairing, and version checks, or when Bluetooth profiles cannot be enabled for any car. Provide the phone model, Android version, vehicle and receiver model, connection type, cable length and certification, and the exact step at which the failure occurs. Those details distinguish a compatibility limit from a defective port or software state.

Android Auto’s launcher, the phone’s battery manager, the USB or Bluetooth link, and the vehicle receiver are separate layers. Restoring a missing feature means correcting the layer that removed it; a staged feature rollout is the exception because availability is controlled remotely and may not change immediately after an update.
