Firefox can restore its traditional Menu bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, and (if wanted) Title bar from the built-in Customize Toolbar screen. Open the application menu, choose More Tools and Customize Toolbar, turn on the bars under Toolbars, then click Done. Set Bookmarks Toolbar to Always Show if it currently appears only on new tabs. You can also add a separate Bookmarks Menu button by dragging it onto the toolbar.
What “classic layout” means in current Firefox
Firefox does not provide one switch that recreates every pixel of an earlier release. Its supported customization controls let you restore the named parts people usually mean by “classic”: the text-based Menu bar, the Bookmarks Toolbar, the optional window Title bar, and a dedicated Bookmarks Menu button. These controls can be combined with the current tab and address-bar design, so the result may look familiar without being an exact historical theme.

The Menu bar contains traditional entries such as File, Edit, View, History and Bookmarks. It is hidden by default in current Firefox. The Bookmarks Toolbar is a separate strip for bookmark buttons and folders; it can be set to show all the time, never, or only on a new tab. The Title bar is the window’s title area and is optional.

These are independent controls. You can turn on the Menu bar without showing the Bookmarks Toolbar, or show the Bookmarks Toolbar while leaving the Menu bar hidden. Likewise, adding the Bookmarks Menu button is a separate action from enabling the text-based Bookmarks menu. Deciding which of those pieces you actually need prevents an unnecessarily crowded window.

What you need before changing anything
No add-on, hardware accessory or separate utility is required. Firefox’s own toolbar customization controls perform the change. If the interface looks unusually bare, first check whether the browser is in full-screen mode; full screen can hide the controls needed to reach the customization view.
If you are about to use Restore Defaults, make a note of your current arrangement first. That command is much broader than turning on a hidden bar: it replaces custom button positions, changes vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs and resets the selected theme to the default theme. For a simple visibility problem, do not begin with a reset.
Choose the route that fits the problem

If the Menu bar is currently hidden, start with Customize Toolbar or the right-click route. The View menu cannot help until the Menu bar has been enabled. Once the bar is visible, View > Toolbars is a convenient shortcut for later visibility changes, while Customize Toolbar remains the place to rearrange individual buttons.
Restore the Menu bar, Bookmarks Toolbar and Title bar
- Open the customization screen. Select the Firefox application menu, choose More Tools, and select Customize Toolbar. Alternatively, right-click a blank part of the tab strip or toolbar and choose Customize Toolbar.
- Open the Toolbars control. In the customization view, locate Toolbars. This control lists the bars Firefox can show or hide.
- Enable Menu Bar. Select Menu Bar to restore the row containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks and related menus.
- Enable Bookmarks Toolbar. Select Bookmarks Toolbar if you want bookmark buttons and folders in a dedicated strip.
- Enable Title Bar if required. Select Title Bar when you want the window title area restored as well. Leave it off if you only want the browser controls.
- Save the arrangement. Click Done. Firefox returns to the normal browsing view with the selected bars enabled.
These settings affect visibility, not the bookmarks stored in your profile. Turning a bar on does not create or delete bookmarks; it only changes where the existing controls are displayed. If you enable all three bars, the browser will use more vertical space. If you only miss the File, Edit, View, History and Bookmarks commands, enabling Menu Bar alone is sufficient.
Make the Bookmarks Toolbar stay visible
Firefox offers three visibility states for the Bookmarks Toolbar: Always Show, Never Show, and Only Show on New Tab. If the bar appears on a new tab but disappears when you open a website, it is set to the third state.
- Open Customize Toolbar using the application-menu route or the right-click route.
- Open the Toolbars control and select Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Choose Always Show.
- Click Done and open a normal website tab to verify that the bar remains present.
Choose Only Show on New Tab when you prefer a cleaner browsing area but still want quick access while opening a new tab. Choose Never Show when you want to reclaim vertical space; bookmarks remain available through the Sidebar and, once enabled, the Menu bar’s Bookmarks menu.
The three choices describe visibility, not storage. Switching from Always Show to Never Show leaves folders and saved pages intact. If a bookmark appears in the Sidebar or Bookmarks menu, the collection is still present even though the strip is hidden.
Add a dedicated Bookmarks Menu button
The text-based Bookmarks menu and the toolbar button are separate controls. Enabling the Menu bar gives you a Bookmarks menu in that row, but it does not automatically place a folder-style Bookmarks Menu button beside the address bar. That button is an optional customization item and is not shown in the toolbar by default.

- Open Application menu > More Tools > Customize Toolbar.
- In the available toolbar items, find Bookmarks Menu.
- Drag Bookmarks Menu to the toolbar location where you want it.
- Release it, review the arrangement, and click Done.
The button gives you a single toolbar control for opening bookmark folders, while the Menu bar’s Bookmarks entry remains a text-menu route. You can use either, both, or neither depending on how much of the older arrangement you want to reproduce.
If you later decide the button is unnecessary, reopen Customize Toolbar and drag it back into the available-items area, then click Done. This removes the button from the toolbar without removing any saved bookmarks.
Use the classic View menu after the Menu bar is restored
Once the Menu bar is visible, the traditional View > Toolbars path becomes a convenient way to change toolbar visibility without reopening the full editor. Use it for a quick switch between showing and hiding the Menu bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or other listed bars. Return to Customize Toolbar when you need to rearrange buttons or add an item such as Bookmarks Menu.
This creates a practical two-stage workflow: use Customize Toolbar for the initial restoration and for drag-and-drop changes, then use View > Toolbars for occasional visibility adjustments. If View is missing, that is expected while Menu Bar is hidden; use the application menu or the toolbar context menu first.
When the controls seem to be missing
Full-screen mode is hiding the interface
Full-screen mode can conceal the controls you need to reach customization. Exit full screen first, then open the application menu or right-click a visible empty toolbar area. If you cannot see any toolbar area at all, move the pointer to the top edge of the window and leave full screen before continuing.
Do not interpret a temporarily hidden interface as a damaged installation. Full screen changes what is displayed, not whether the Menu bar or Bookmarks Toolbar settings exist.
On macOS, Firefox may not own the application menu
macOS places the application menu at the top of the screen for whichever app is active. Click the Firefox window so Firefox is the selected application, then use its menu. If another app is selected, the menu headings you see belong to that app rather than Firefox.

This is normal rather than a sign that the installation is damaged. Use More Tools > Customize Toolbar or right-click an empty part of the tab strip and select the Menu bar option. After it is enabled, View > Toolbars will be available for later visibility changes.

The Bookmarks Toolbar appears only on new tabs
Open the Toolbars control and change its state from Only Show on New Tab to Always Show. Do not create a second toolbar or move bookmark folders to fix this symptom; the visibility state is the cause.
The toolbar is heavily rearranged or controls are missing
Use Restore Defaults in Customize Toolbar only when ordinary visibility and drag-and-drop changes do not recover the layout. This is a broad reset: it restores default buttons and toolbars, switches vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs, and resets the default theme. Record any preferred arrangement first, because the reset can remove those custom choices.
Restore Defaults safely
A reset is appropriate when a toolbar configuration is corrupted, an item has disappeared from the customization palette, or repeated changes leave the interface unusable. Before selecting it:

- Note which bars you want visible and whether you use vertical tabs.
- Expect custom button positions to be replaced by Firefox’s defaults.
- Expect vertical tabs to switch to horizontal tabs.
- Expect the selected theme to return to the default theme.
After the reset completes, reopen Customize Toolbar, enable Menu Bar and Bookmarks Toolbar as needed, set the Bookmarks Toolbar display state, and add Bookmarks Menu again if you use it. If the problem is only that a bar is hidden, do not reset the entire layout.
Because Restore Defaults affects more than the one missing control, treat it as a recovery step rather than a faster version of the normal instructions. A visibility checkbox or a drag-and-drop adjustment is less disruptive and should be tried first.
Adjust toolbar density when the classic layout feels too tall
Toolbar density is separate from whether the Menu bar or Bookmarks Toolbar is visible. Mozilla Support states: Starting with Firefox version 157, Compact mode can be enabled directly in Firefox Settings.
On a version with that control, use the supported Settings route and then return to Customize Toolbar if you need to rearrange buttons.
The version threshold is specific to Mozilla’s stated guidance, so check the Firefox version installed on the computer before looking for the option. A release earlier than 157 may not display Compact in Settings. Mozilla documents an earlier workaround: set browser.compactmode.show to true in the Configuration Editor, then choose Compact in Customize Toolbar. Mozilla labels that workaround unsupported and warns that Configuration Editor changes can affect browser stability, security and performance. Treat it as an advanced, last-resort choice rather than the normal way to restore a classic layout.

Bookmarks are still available without the toolbar
Hiding the Bookmarks Toolbar does not hide or delete the bookmark collection. Firefox keeps bookmarks accessible through the Sidebar, and the Menu bar’s Bookmarks menu is available once the Menu bar is enabled. The optional Bookmarks Menu toolbar button provides a third access point for people who want a single clickable control near the address bar.
This distinction helps diagnose apparent data loss: if bookmarks are present in the Sidebar or Bookmarks menu, changing toolbar visibility is all that is required. Do not use Restore Defaults merely because the toolbar is hidden.
What Firefox can and cannot reproduce
The supported controls cover the named bars and buttons, their visibility, and their placement. They do not promise a universal “old Firefox theme” switch or a pixel-for-pixel recreation of every prior release. Current tab styling, spacing, icons and other interface details may remain different even after Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar and Title Bar are enabled.
For that reason, define the desired result before changing settings: restoring access to familiar menus requires only Menu Bar; keeping bookmark folders permanently visible requires Bookmarks Toolbar set to Always Show; restoring the window title requires Title Bar; and adding a one-click bookmark list requires dragging Bookmarks Menu into place. Enabling only the controls you actually use avoids unnecessary screen clutter.
A quick verification checklist
- The row containing File, Edit, View, History and Bookmarks is visible if Menu Bar was requested.
- The Bookmarks Toolbar remains visible on an ordinary website tab when set to Always Show.
- The window title area is present if Title Bar was enabled.
- The Bookmarks Menu button appears in the chosen toolbar position if it was added manually.
- Bookmarks open from the Sidebar or Bookmarks menu even when the toolbar is hidden.
- No reset was performed unless ordinary visibility and customization controls failed.
- Compact density was changed through Settings when available, rather than through an unsupported Configuration Editor workaround.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my Bookmarks Toolbar?
Open Customize Toolbar, expand Toolbars, select Bookmarks Toolbar, and choose Always Show. If it was set to Only Show on New Tab, it will disappear on ordinary website tabs even though the bookmarks themselves remain saved.
