How to Restore Deleted or Disenchanted Gear in World of Warcraft

If you accidentally sold, destroyed, or disenchanted World of Warcraft gear, use Blizzard’s Item Restoration service. Choose the character, select an item that is still eligible, and Blizzard sends the restored item to that character’s in-game mailbox. Disenchanted items are exchanged back for the materials you received, so keep those materials available.

If the gear belonged to a deleted character, restore the character from the character-selection screen first. Then open Item Restoration for that character. Both services have cooldowns, retention windows, account requirements, and exclusions; Customer Support cannot restore entries that Blizzard has purged.

Choose the recovery route for what you lost

World of Warcraft has two separate self-service controls. Item Restoration handles individual items that were sold, destroyed, or disenchanted. Restore Character handles a deleted character and everything that still existed on that character when it was deleted.

What was lost Official route What must be true
Sold, destroyed, or disenchanted gear Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration service; a recent vendor sale may instead be in Buyback The item is listed, the account is eligible, and the character has not used its restoration allowance
Deleted character Restore Character on the character-selection screen The character is within Blizzard’s retention rules, you have an open character slot, and the daily restoration limit is available

A deleted character that held the item requires both routes in this order: restore the character, then restore the item. Restoring the character does not automatically reverse a sale, destruction, or disenchant that happened before deletion.

Identify the event before clicking anything. A vendor sale may still be reversible immediately through Buyback, while a destruction made during the same session may not populate Item Restoration until you log out. A disenchant requires you to preserve the resulting materials. Treating all three mistakes as the same process can waste a cooldown or make the exchange impossible.

Restore an item step by step

1. Confirm that Item Restoration is the right tool

Use Item Restoration for gear your character sold, destroyed, or disenchanted. If you sold an item to a vendor during the current login session, check Buyback before using the restoration service. If you destroyed an item during the same session, log out first; Blizzard says those entries are not available in Item Restoration until logout.

2. Open the Item Restoration page

Sign in to your Battle.net account and open Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration page. The service lists recoverable items associated with each eligible character. Select the character that originally held the gear. Make sure you choose the correct realm and character; restoration is tied to the selected character rather than being a general account delivery.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select the item or items

Choose the eligible gear shown for that character and complete the confirmation screens. The service enforces a per-character allowance of up to five items once every 24 hours. The live service also describes a 24-hour per-character cooldown, so check the current page if the limit or timer displayed in your account differs. Selecting five items uses the allowance even if you had several different mistakes on that character, so prioritize items that are still useful and closest to their retention deadline.

4. Retrieve the restored gear from mail

After processing, Blizzard sends the item to the selected character’s in-game mailbox. Log in to that character and collect the mail. Restoration is not an account-wide transfer: the item is mailed to the character selected in the service. If you do not see it immediately, confirm that you are logged into that exact character and check the mailbox again after the service finishes processing.

5. Record the cooldown before trying another item

The item limit is tracked per character, not as one shared five-item pool for the entire Battle.net account. If another character also lost gear, that character can have its own listing and timer. The service page is the authority for the timer displayed on your account, because Blizzard can change service limits.

How to recover a disenchanted item

Disenchant restoration is an exchange, not a free duplicate. Blizzard reclaims the crafting materials produced by the disenchant when it returns the original item. Leave those materials in your possession until the restoration completes; spending or deleting them can prevent the exchange from succeeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check every location before submitting: the materials may be in your bags, bank, reagent storage, or another container available to the character. Do not transfer them to another character or use them in crafting while the restoration is pending. The service needs to take back the materials associated with that disenchant.

The restored gear does not regain every state it had before the mistake. If you disenchanted the item while in a raid group, restoring it within two hours does not restore the original two-hour trade option. The item returns without that raid-group trade eligibility.

This means Item Restoration is not a way to reclaim an item for later trading with group members. It returns the gear to the character selected in the service, with the raid-group trade restriction unchanged after the disenchant.

Check Buyback before restoring a recent vendor sale

For an item sold to a vendor since you logged in, open that vendor’s Buyback tab. Blizzard’s support guidance says Buyback can repurchase the last 12 items sold during the current login session. This is separate from the Item Restoration allowance and does not consume one of the five daily restoration slots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buyback is session-based. Once the item falls outside the displayed Buyback history or you log out, use Item Restoration if the item appears there and meets its rules. Buyback is therefore the fastest first check for a sale made moments ago, but it is not a permanent inventory history.

If you sold more than 12 things after the gear, the older sale may no longer be visible in Buyback. Do not keep selling items while trying to locate the mistake; doing so can push the relevant sale out of the last-12 list.

Restore a deleted character before its gear

Open character restoration

At the World of Warcraft character-selection screen, select the deleted-character option and choose the character you want to recover. Blizzard does not restore characters manually through Customer Support; the self-service control is required.

Understand what comes back

A restored character returns in the state recorded when it was deleted. This lets you access gear that was on the character at deletion, but it does not undo an earlier item sale, destruction, or disenchant. If the gear was already lost, run Item Restoration after the character is back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Character restoration and item restoration are separate transactions. First confirm that the character and its inventory are present. Then select that character in Item Restoration and look for any item that had already been removed before deletion.

Meet the account and slot requirements

  • You need an available character slot on the applicable World of Warcraft realm.
  • Character restoration is limited to one restoration per day. Blizzard says the cooldown is shared by multiple World of Warcraft accounts on the same Battle.net account.
  • Characters below the applicable minimum level, class trials, and allied-race or hero-class characters at their starting level are listed as ineligible.

If the realm is full, free a slot before submitting the undelete. The slot requirement is checked when you restore the character, not after you begin searching for its items.

Character retention windows are version-specific

Blizzard’s current Restore World of Warcraft Character support page displays separate eligibility tables. Because the tables use different level bands, do not combine them into one universal rule. Use the table that applies to the game or client context shown for your account.

The support page does not explain in one universal table which game-version context each set covers. If a character is close to a boundary, compare the level and deletion date with the table displayed for your account rather than assuming the other table applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are windows measured from deletion, not from the day you first notice the missing character. Waiting can move a character from eligible to purged, so check Restore Character promptly even if you are still gathering information about the lost gear.

Why an item is missing from Item Restoration

The item was destroyed this session

Log out and check again. Blizzard delays current-session destroyed items from appearing in the service until logout.

The item is an excluded category

Blizzard lists several types that Item Restoration does not recover:

  • Stackable crafting materials and quest items.
  • Consumables, including reagents, potions, and food.
  • Collectibles already added to Collections.
  • Temporary items.
  • Items traded or mailed to another character.
  • Items sold on the Auction House.
  • Items destroyed before a Character Transfer or Faction Change.

These exclusions are separate from the service’s retention timer. An item can disappear because it is ineligible, because it has left the database, or because your account cannot use the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Auction House sale is not the same as selling to an NPC vendor. Buyback applies to the vendor session, not to an Auction House listing or completed sale. Likewise, mailing or trading an item away removes it from the restoration path described here.

The item has aged out

Item entries eventually disappear from Blizzard’s database. Blizzard gives a Common white item as an example that may be recoverable for only one day and an Epic item as an example that may remain recoverable for 30 days. Those are illustrations of how quality and item level can affect retention, not guarantees for a particular item.

Do not interpret the 30-day Epic example as a promise that every Epic remains available for exactly 30 days. Quality, item level, and the database’s retention rules determine what appears for your character.

Once an entry has been purged, Blizzard says it cannot be restored by any means, including Customer Support. There is no manual exception process for a purged item.

The item is actually a collection unlock

If a pet, mount, or heirloom appears to be missing, check the Collections interface rather than Item Restoration. Blizzard also recommends logging in with the character that originally obtained it. A collection unlock may not appear as a removable inventory item even though the account still owns it.

Before submitting a restoration request for a collectible, verify that you are viewing the right collection category and using the character that originally earned it. A missing icon is not proof that the account lost the unlock.

Account requirements and cooldowns

Item Restoration access

Item Restoration requires game time or an active subscription. It is unavailable while the account is suspended or banned. These are access requirements for the service; they do not extend an item’s retention period.

Item allowance

Blizzard’s support article states a maximum of five restored items once every 24 hours on each character. The service page also presents a 24-hour per-character cooldown. The timer applies per character, not as one shared pool across your entire roster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Character allowance

Character undelete permits one restoration per day, with the cooldown shared across World of Warcraft accounts linked to the same Battle.net account. You also need an unused character slot when you submit the restoration.

Do not confuse the two timers: restoring a character does not consume an item-restoration allowance, and restoring an item does not use the character-undelete allowance. Each control has its own eligibility check and cooldown.

Common recovery scenarios

You disenchant raid loot by mistake

  1. Keep every material produced by the disenchant.
  2. Open Item Restoration and select the character that received the loot.
  3. Submit the item while it is still listed and within your daily allowance.
  4. Collect the restored gear from in-game mail.
  5. Expect Blizzard to reclaim the materials. Do not expect the two-hour raid-group trade option to return.

You deleted the character that owned the gear

  1. Check that the deleted character still appears in Restore Character and that you have an open slot.
  2. Restore the character from the character-selection screen.
  3. Log in to confirm the character and its inventory are back.
  4. Use Item Restoration for any gear that had already been sold, destroyed, or disenchanted.

You sold the item moments ago

  1. Stay logged in and return to the same vendor.
  2. Open Buyback and look through the last 12 sales shown for the session.
  3. Repurchase the item there if it is listed.
  4. If it is not listed, log out and check Item Restoration after the service has processed the sale.

The deleted character no longer appears

Blizzard says a character absent from the restoration list has been purged and cannot be restored by any means. Customer Support cannot recover a purged character, its inventory, or gear that depended on it.

The item appears, but restoration will not submit

Check the account first: Item Restoration requires active game time or a subscription and is unavailable on a suspended or banned account. Then check whether you have already restored five items on that character in the previous 24 hours. For a disenchant, verify that the materials are still available for Blizzard to reclaim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What restoration does not do

  • It does not restore items sold on the Auction House, mailed or traded away, or destroyed before a Character Transfer or Faction Change.
  • It does not recover excluded consumables, quest items, temporary items, or already-unlocked collectibles.
  • It does not bypass the five-item, 24-hour item limit or the one-character-per-day undelete limit.
  • It does not extend the database retention window.
  • It does not make a raid-group disenchant tradeable again.
  • It does not let Customer Support override a purge.

A practical checklist before you submit

  • Identify whether the loss was a vendor sale, destruction, disenchant, or character deletion.
  • For a current-session sale, check Buyback first; for current-session destruction, log out before checking Item Restoration.
  • If a character was deleted, restore it before searching for its items.
  • For a disenchant, retain all resulting materials.
  • Verify that the account has game time or an active subscription and is not suspended or banned.
  • Check the item’s category against Blizzard’s exclusions.
  • Check the character’s level, deletion date, daily cooldown, and available slot.
  • Submit before the item or character disappears from Blizzard’s list.
  • Choose the correct character, since restored gear is mailed only to the character selected in the service.

Historical cooldown changes versus the current process

Blizzard announced temporary character-restoration changes on October 3, 2024, including a 60-second delay and a seven-day cooldown reinstatement on October 15. That announcement describes a historical policy change around the War Within pre-expansion update; it is not the current universal cooldown guidance. For a live recovery attempt, follow the timer and eligibility information shown in Blizzard’s current support pages and in your account.

When the item is permanently unrecoverable

The decisive sign is absence after the relevant checks: the item is not in Buyback, does not appear in Item Restoration after logout, and is not an excluded collection or consumable case. If Blizzard’s database has purged the entry, the recovery path ends there. Blizzard’s support guidance explicitly states that Customer Support will not restore World of Warcraft items and that purged items cannot be restored by any means.

For a character, the equivalent final condition is that it no longer appears in Restore Character. A character purge cannot be reversed, so any gear that existed only on that character is unavailable through Blizzard’s restoration tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I restore a disenchanted item in WoW?

Keep the materials produced by the disenchant, open Blizzard’s Item Restoration service, select the original character and item, and complete the confirmation. Blizzard mails the gear back and reclaims the materials. A raid-group disenchant does not regain its two-hour trade option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get back gear I accidentally deleted?

Yes, if the item is still listed and eligible. Log out first if the destruction happened during the current session, then use Item Restoration. Excluded categories and purged entries cannot be recovered.

How do I undelete a character in World of Warcraft?

Use Restore Character from the character-selection screen. The character must still appear in the list, meet the applicable level and retention rules, and have an available character slot. Blizzard does not perform this restoration manually through Customer Support.

Why is my item not showing in Item Restoration?

It may still be delayed because it was destroyed this session, may be an excluded category, may have been mailed, traded, or auctioned, or may have aged out of Blizzard’s database. Log out, review the exclusions, and check the service again.

Can I restore an item sold to a vendor without using my daily allowance?

Check the vendor’s Buyback tab first. It can show the last 12 items sold during the current login session, and repurchasing there does not consume an Item Restoration slot. Once the sale leaves Buyback, use Item Restoration if it is listed.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Does restoring a deleted character restore gear that was already disenchanted?

No. The character returns in the state recorded at deletion. If the gear was sold, destroyed, or disenchanted before deletion, restore the character first and then use Item Restoration for the separate item recovery.

How many items can I restore?

Blizzard’s support guidance allows up to five items once every 24 hours on each character. The live service shows a 24-hour per-character cooldown, so follow the timer displayed for your account.

Can Customer Support restore a purged item or character?

No. Blizzard states that purged items and characters cannot be restored by any means. If the entry no longer appears after the relevant checks, there is no manual override.

The Bottom Line

Use Buyback for a recent vendor sale; otherwise use Item Restoration, keep disenchant materials, and restore a deleted character before recovering its gear. Act within the displayed cooldown and retention windows, because purged items and characters cannot be restored.
