Removing a mouse or keyboard utility does not guarantee that every unusual behavior will disappear. First determine whether the symptom was a software remap that only ran while the utility was active, a Windows setting, an accessibility feature, a keyboard layout, or a profile stored by the device itself. Then reset only the layer that explains the symptom.
Why uninstalling a utility may not restore normal input
There is no universal Windows command that restores every mouse and keyboard behavior to one known baseline. Utilities can act in different places: some intercept keys only while their background process is running, some change Windows preferences, and some save profiles in the mouse or keyboard’s own memory. A changed setting can therefore remain after the utility’s program files are gone, while a runtime remap should stop as soon as its required background process stops.

The symptom gives the best starting point. A swapped left and right click suggests the primary-button setting or a device profile. A pointer that moves too quickly or scrolls in the wrong direction points to mouse controls. A key that launches a shortcut instead of typing normally suggests a remap. A key that produces a different character usually indicates the active keyboard layout rather than a shortcut remap. Keys that are ignored, repeated, or seem to require unusual timing can be affected by accessibility features.

Classify the symptom before changing settings
| What you observe | Most relevant place to check |
|---|---|
| Left and right mouse buttons are exchanged | Windows Primary mouse button, Additional mouse settings, or a device profile |
| Pointer speed or scrolling feels different | Windows Mouse settings or a device-specific profile |
| A key triggers a shortcut, another key, or an action | The utility’s remapper, another remapping program, or a device profile |
| A key types the wrong letter, symbol, or punctuation | The active Windows keyboard layout |
| Keys behave as if they are stuck, ignored, or require a different press pattern | Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys, or another accessibility option |
| The numeric keypad moves the pointer | Mouse Keys |
| The problem occurs only with one mouse or keyboard | That device’s profile, firmware, or companion software |
Test the same action in more than one application. If the behavior changes everywhere, Windows or the device is more likely than a single application. If only one program is affected, inspect that program’s own shortcuts or input settings before changing system-wide options.

Check whether a software remapper is still active
PowerToys Keyboard Manager
If the removed utility was PowerToys, its Keyboard Manager remaps have a specific runtime requirement. Microsoft Learn states: “For key remapping to work, PowerToys must be running in the background and Keyboard Manager must be enabled.” Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager guidance also says that closing PowerToys or disabling Keyboard Manager stops the remapped keys.
That means a remap that was created in Keyboard Manager should not continue merely because its configuration once existed. If PowerToys has been completely removed, look next at Windows settings, another installed remapping tool, or the device itself. Do not assume that every other utility cleans up its changes in the same way; their storage and runtime behavior can differ.
How to test for a remaining remapper
- Restart Windows, then test the affected key or button before opening optional utilities. A behavior that returns only after a particular companion program starts points toward that program.
- Look in the notification area and in Windows startup entries for a utility that can intercept input. Temporarily close or disable one suspected program at a time, then test again.
- If the device has a companion application, inspect its active profile and whether a profile is assigned to the current application. A profile can affect one device even when the original utility you remember uninstalling is gone.
- Write down the exact key, button, application, and device combination that fails. This prevents you from changing unrelated settings and gives the device maker useful diagnostic information.
A software remap is different from a Windows preference. Stopping a remapper will not change the Windows primary mouse button, pointer speed, scrolling options, accessibility features, or keyboard layout.
Restore mouse behavior in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Mouse.
- Under the mouse controls, inspect Primary mouse button. Choose the button you want to use for the primary click.
- Review Mouse pointer speed and set it to the level that feels correct for your work.
- Check the Scrolling options, including the direction and how much content moves per wheel action, and choose the behavior you intend.
These controls set your chosen Windows values; they are not a universal one-click reset for every setting a utility might have changed. If the pointer still behaves differently, continue to the additional mouse properties and the device profile checks below.

Additional mouse properties in Windows 11
From the Mouse page, open Additional mouse settings. The classic mouse-properties dialog provides separate areas for button behavior, pointer options, the wheel, and the pointer scheme. Review each area for a setting that matches the symptom rather than changing everything at random. For example, a swapped click is a button setting, while acceleration or a pointer scheme is found under pointer options.
Apply one change, test it, and record the result. If the unusual behavior appears only after the device’s companion software starts, that software may be rewriting the Windows value or applying its own profile.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices, then Mouse.
- Inspect the primary-button choice, pointer speed, and scrolling options.
- Select Additional mouse options to open the classic properties dialog for button behavior, pointer options, wheel settings, and pointer schemes.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different navigation labels, so instructions for one version may not match the other exactly. If a label is missing, use the Settings search box for “mouse” and choose the result that opens the Mouse page for your Windows version.

- Confirm that the Windows primary-button setting is correct.
- Disconnect and reconnect the mouse, then test it on another USB port if available.
- Check whether the mouse’s companion software has a left/right-button assignment or an active profile.
- Test a different mouse. If only one device is affected, concentrate on its profile or hardware rather than repeatedly changing global Windows settings.
Check accessibility features before calling the keyboard faulty
Windows accessibility features intentionally alter input behavior. They should not be disabled indiscriminately: a feature that seems unusual may be necessary for the person using the computer.

Mouse Keys
Mouse Keys lets the numeric keypad move the pointer. If pressing keypad numbers moves the pointer instead of entering numbers, open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse and inspect Mouse Keys. Turn it off only if that behavior is unwanted. Microsoft’s Mouse Keys documentation describes this as a built-in way to control the pointer, not as a sign that the mouse driver is broken.
Sticky Keys
Sticky Keys changes how modifier keys such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Windows key can be pressed. It can make a shortcut work without holding all keys simultaneously. If shortcuts seem to remain active after a modifier was released, inspect Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review Sticky Keys.
Toggle Keys
Toggle Keys can provide a sound when Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock changes state. It does not remap a key, but its feedback can make a keyboard seem different if you were not expecting it. Review it in the same Accessibility keyboard area.

Filter Keys changes how Windows responds to brief or repeated keystrokes. It can suppress repeated presses or alter the response to held keys. If letters are being ignored or repeated in a way that does not match a remap, check Filter Keys before replacing the keyboard.
Change one accessibility option at a time and test the exact action that was failing. This preserves intentional accommodations and makes it clear which setting changed the result.

Separate a keyboard layout problem from a key remap
A remap changes what a key does, while a keyboard layout changes which character Windows assigns to a physical key. For example, the key may still be functioning normally but produce a different symbol because another layout is active.
- Open Windows language and input settings and inspect the currently active keyboard layout.
- Switch to the layout you normally use, then test the affected letters and punctuation.
- If an unwanted layout is installed, remove it from the language’s keyboard options.
- If Windows will not let you remove it, check whether it is the sole installed layout for the current display language. Windows can prevent removal in that situation; add the layout you intend to keep before trying again.
Wrong characters across many applications are a strong layout clue. A key that launches a command, acts like another key, or changes behavior only in a particular context is more consistent with a remap or profile.

Use the On-Screen Keyboard when physical input is unreliable
Windows includes the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK), which lets you type with the mouse or another pointing method while you diagnose the physical keyboard. Open it from Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Microsoft also documents access to OSK from the Windows sign-in screen, which is useful if the keyboard problem prevents you from entering a password or PIN.
OSK is a temporary access tool, not a reset mechanism. It will not remove a remap, change a layout, or repair a device profile, but it can provide enough input to open Settings, save work, and troubleshoot without immediately buying replacement hardware.
Best Value
When the device itself has retained a profile
Some mice and keyboards can store button, key, sensitivity, lighting, or application profiles in the device or in a companion application. The supplied Windows controls cannot identify or erase every vendor-specific profile. If the unusual behavior follows one device to another computer, or appears before the companion application starts, treat the device profile as a leading possibility.
Evidence that points to a device profile
- The same mouse or keyboard behaves unusually on a second Windows computer.
- Another mouse or keyboard works normally on the original computer.
- The problem affects only one device, while Windows settings look correct.
- The behavior changes when a profile button, onboard-memory mode, or companion application is used.
Identify the exact device model and consult its maker’s instructions for profile selection or reset. There is no device-neutral procedure supported by the information available here, so avoid applying instructions for a different model.
A practical decision path
- Record the symptom. Note the affected key or button, the application, the device, and whether the problem is a wrong action, wrong character, changed speed, or changed response time.
- Restart and test early. Test before launching optional utilities. If the behavior returns only when a program runs, investigate that program’s remapper or profile.
- Check the matching Windows area. Use Mouse settings for clicks, pointer speed, and scrolling; Accessibility for Mouse Keys and keyboard response features; and language settings for wrong characters.
- Test another device. This separates a computer-wide setting from a device-specific profile.
- Escalate with precise details. Provide the utility name and version if known, Windows version, device model, exact symptom, and the checks already completed.
What not to do as a first response
- Do not assume that uninstalling one utility removes settings written by every other utility.
- Do not change the registry merely because a key remains unusual. A generic registry edit is not an authoritative reset procedure for an unspecified utility.
- Do not remove drivers as a blanket fix. Driver removal can introduce a separate connectivity problem and is not supported here as a universal cleanup step.
- Do not disable every accessibility feature at once. These options may be intentional and doing so makes the original cause harder to identify.
- Do not treat a wrong character as proof of a key remap before checking the active layout.
When to seek utility- or device-specific guidance
If the symptom remains after the relevant Windows setting, accessibility option, and keyboard layout have been checked, the next step is to identify the utility and hardware precisely. Different tools store mappings differently, and device makers may provide an onboard-profile reset or a companion-app procedure that Windows does not expose.
At that point, gather the utility name, whether it was still running after uninstall, the Windows edition and version, the device model, and whether the issue follows the device to another computer. Those details determine whether the next action belongs in Windows, in the utility, or in the device’s own profile system.
Bottom line
Restore the layer that caused the behavior: stop an active remapper, correct Windows mouse controls, review Accessibility options, select the proper keyboard layout, or reset a device profile using model-specific instructions. Because the utility is unspecified, no single cleanup command can safely promise a complete reset.
