On a computer, go to photos.google.com, open the image, choose Edit > Revert > Save. Revert is the normal way to undo edits; you do not need an external drive or another app.
What “restore the original” means in Google Photos
Google Photos treats reverting as undoing the edits saved to an edited photo. The command removes the saved changes and returns the item to its earlier appearance. The controls are available in the Google Photos app on Android and iOS, and in the desktop website at photos.google.com.

Before changing anything, make sure you have opened the correct item. A library can contain the camera original, an edited version, and a separate copy created during an earlier edit. Those are different photo items, so the result depends on which one you open.
If you want to inspect the difference first, Google provides a temporary comparison: touch and hold the preview in the mobile app, or click and hold the photo on a computer. Release the hold to return to the edited view. This lets you check that the photo is the one you intend to change before selecting Revert.

Restore the original on Android or iPhone
The Android and iOS workflow uses the same basic controls. Labels and icon placement can move slightly as Google updates the app, but the command remains inside the photo editor.
- Open Google Photos and select the edited photo.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Revert. Google describes this command as undoing changes to an edited photo.
- Review the result. If Google Photos presents a save choice, select the option that applies to your situation and confirm.
Use the preview comparison before step 3 if you are unsure whether the edit is worth removing. Once the photo shows its earlier appearance, leave the editor only after confirming the result you want to keep.
Restore the original on a computer
On a desktop or laptop, Google’s documented path is:
- Open photos.google.com in a browser and sign in to the Google account that contains the photo.
- Open the edited image.
- Click Edit.
- Click Revert.
- Click Save when prompted.
To compare the two versions before reverting, click and hold the photo while viewing it. The comparison is temporary; it does not create another file or alter the image.

Choose the correct save option
Google Photos can present two different ways to save an edit. They have different consequences for restoring an original, so read the choice rather than accepting it automatically.
| Option | What it does | Can Revert undo the resulting edits? | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save | Saves the changes to the existing photo item. Google notes that this option may not be available for certain edits. | Yes, while the item still has those edits; open it and use Edit > Revert. | Use it when the edited photo should replace the current appearance and you are comfortable changing that item. |
| Save as copy | Creates a new photo containing the edits and leaves the original item unchanged. | No. Google states that edits saved as a copy cannot be undone with Revert. | Use it when you want an edited version while preserving the untouched original. |
The key distinction is which photo item received the edit. Revert applies to an edited item; it is not a command that merges two separate copies or searches the library for an earlier file.
If you used “Save as copy”
When an edit was saved as a copy, the original should remain as a separate item. Opening the new edited copy and looking for Revert will not restore the original, because Google says changes to a copy cannot be undone with that command.

What to do when Revert is missing
Google’s troubleshooting guidance identifies two ordinary explanations: the photo was never edited, or its edits have already been reverted. Check that you opened the intended item, especially if the library contains both an original and a copy.
- No Edit control: The item may not be editable in the current interface, or the relevant feature may not be available on that platform.
- Edit is present but Revert is not: Google says the photo may have no remaining edits, or the edits may already have been reverted.
- You opened a copied image: Revert cannot undo edits that were saved as a copy. Find the original item instead.
Google also notes that some editing features are not available on mobile web or on a computer. If a control is absent in a browser, try the Google Photos app on Android or iOS; if it is absent in the app, check that you are viewing the correct photo rather than assuming the file is permanently changed.
When the photo still displays incorrectly
Google documents a separate Android troubleshooting procedure for a photo that appears wrong, rather than the normal way to undo an edit. Use this branch only when the display problem matches that situation. Do not delete and re-upload a photo simply because you want to undo an ordinary crop, filter, or adjustment.
1. Check the file name and compare the versions
Confirm the file name of the problem image. Compare the copy stored on the device with the version shown online in Google Photos. This helps establish whether the problem is limited to the cloud display or is present in the local file as well.

2. Open the file in Files by Google
If the image displays correctly in Files by Google, Google’s instructions are to revert edits if needed, save a backup copy to a computer, and then replace the problematic cloud item with that backup. The backup must be downloaded or copied before anything is deleted.
3. Preserve the backup before deleting anything
Save the working file to a computer first. An external drive can be an optional second place to keep that downloaded backup, but it is not required for the Revert feature. Do not proceed to deletion until you can open the backup and confirm that it is the file you intend to keep.
4. Delete the backed-up cloud photo and upload the backup
After verifying the backup, delete the incorrectly displayed cloud photo and upload the preserved file again. This is a recovery procedure for the documented incorrect-display case, not a replacement for Edit > Revert.

Google says that when the file is also incorrect in Files by Google, Photos cannot recover the original file through this procedure. Stop before deleting the only remaining copy; look for another local or previously backed-up version instead.

How to avoid losing the version you want
The safest choice depends on whether the current photo should be replaced or preserved alongside an edited rendition.
- Replace the current appearance: Use Save, then use Revert later if you need to undo those saved edits and Revert is available for the item.
- Keep an untouched original: Use Save as copy. The original remains separate, while the new item carries the edits.
- Unsure before reverting: Use the press-and-hold comparison on mobile or the click-and-hold comparison on a computer, then decide.
- Facing a display error: Download and verify a backup before any deletion or re-upload step.
These choices are different from exporting a file for general backup. Save as copy is an in-Photos way to retain two photo items; the incorrect-display procedure requires a verified downloaded backup before replacing a cloud item.
Common situations and the right action
| Situation | Action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You edited the photo and saved changes to the same item. | Open it, choose Edit, choose Revert, and save. | Revert must still be available for that item. |
| You chose Save as copy and now dislike the edited copy. | Find the original item in the library. | Google says Revert cannot undo edits on the copied item. |
| The photo has no edits left. | Use the existing item as it is. | Google says Revert may be absent when the photo was never edited or was already reverted. |
| The image looks wrong only in Google Photos on Android. | Check the file name, compare the online and device versions, then follow the verified-backup replacement procedure if the local file is correct. | Back up before deleting the cloud item. |
| The image is also wrong in Files by Google. | Look for another backup or original source. | Google says Photos cannot recover the original file in that condition. |
| A browser is missing an editing feature. | Try the Google Photos app on Android or iOS. | Some editing features are unavailable on mobile web or computer. |
Checks before you finish
- Confirm that the restored image is the intended photo and not a separate edited copy.
- Use the temporary comparison before committing if you are uncertain about the previous appearance.
- After choosing Revert, inspect the image at the areas affected by the edit, such as the crop boundaries or adjusted region.
- If Google presents Save or Save as copy, choose based on whether you want to replace the item or preserve a separate version.
- For the incorrect-display recovery path, open the downloaded backup before deleting the cloud photo.
Why deleting and re-uploading is usually the wrong fix
Deleting a cloud photo and uploading another file introduces a risk that does not exist with Revert: the only usable copy can be removed before the replacement is verified. Google’s instructions mention deletion and re-upload only for a specific Android incorrect-display problem after a correct local file has been backed up. For a normal edit, Revert is the direct, built-in workflow and should be attempted first.

Likewise, downloading a file to a computer is not a prerequisite for restoring an ordinary edit. It becomes relevant only when you are following the documented display-error recovery procedure or when you independently want a backup.
Quick Recap
Final decision guide
- Did you edit the existing photo item? Open it and use Edit > Revert, then save.
- Did you save the edit as a copy? Find the original item; Revert the original only if it also has edits.
- Is Revert unavailable? Check whether the item was never edited, already reverted, or is a separate copy. Also consider platform feature availability.
- Does the image display incorrectly rather than merely look edited? Compare the device and online files, verify a backup, and use deletion/re-upload only for the documented Android troubleshooting case.
