If an Android app is archived, tap its faded icon to download the app again. Android removes the app’s software but keeps the icon and app data, so unarchiving is intended to bring the app back without deleting retained data. If there is no faded icon, the app may have been uninstalled, or its storage may have been cleared; those situations require different recovery steps and may not restore local data.
First identify what happened to the app
“Missing” can describe three different Android states. Choosing the wrong recovery path can overwrite the best chance of recovering local data, so identify the state before reinstalling or clearing anything.

| What you see | What it usually means | Best first action | Data outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| A dimmed or faded icon remains in the launcher or app list | The app is archived | Tap the faded icon, or use App info or the app-store details page | Android is designed to retain the app’s data while removing the software |
| No icon, but the app appears under Play Store’s “Not installed” list | The app was uninstalled or deleted | Reinstall or enable it from the same Google Account | Cloud-synced data may return; local data is not guaranteed |
| The app is installed but behaves like a first launch | Its storage may have been cleared, or the app lost its local state | Check the app account, sync or restore feature, and Android backup status | Clearing storage deletes local app data; recovery depends on a backup or the app’s own cloud service |
Google describes archiving this way: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” That is different from uninstalling, which removes the app and can remove its local files, and from clearing storage, which explicitly deletes the app’s saved data.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Open the home screen or the full app list.
- Find the app’s dimmed or faded icon. Archived icons normally remain in the same place so you can start the restore.
- Tap the icon once. Android should begin downloading and reinstalling the app.
- Keep the phone connected to the internet and wait for the installation to finish.
- Open the restored app and check that the expected account, projects, downloads or game profile are present.
Because archive is designed to retain app data, this process should not require you to set up the app as a new installation. The result still depends on how that app stores its information; an app that keeps important content only on a server may require you to sign in again.
Use Settings or the app store when the icon does not work
Restore from the app’s App info page
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps (the label may be Apps & notifications or similar).
- Select the archived app by name. If it is not immediately listed, use Settings search for the app.
- On the app’s App info page, choose the available option to unarchive, restore or reinstall it.
- Wait for the download to complete, then launch the app.
Android manufacturers change the wording and placement of these controls. If you cannot find an “Unarchive” button, inspect the app’s store listing instead of assuming the data is gone.
Restore from the app’s store details page
- Open the app store installed on the phone.
- Search for the exact app name and open its details page.
- Choose Install, Enable or the equivalent restore control.
- After installation, open the app and verify the account and content.
Google’s archive route requires an installed app store and an app listing that is still available. If the developer withdrew the listing, the store cannot fetch the package, or the device cannot access the store, the standard unarchive process may be unavailable. Contact the app developer or the device manufacturer in that situation rather than downloading an APK from an unverified site.

- Free space: An archive restore downloads the app again. If storage is insufficient, Android asks you to manage space before continuing. Remove or move unneeded files, then retry.
- Internet access: Use a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. A stalled download can leave the icon faded even though the retained data is still present.
- Store availability: The store must be installed and able to reach the listing. Enterprise or restricted devices may disable store access.
- Android version and hardware: Google notes that some archive operations work only on Android 15 or later and that certain features require supporting device hardware. Menus therefore differ by Android release and manufacturer.
- Correct app: Check the developer name and icon before installing a similarly named replacement. A different package will not contain the original app’s data.
Do not clear the app’s storage or uninstall it while troubleshooting an archived app. Those actions are separate from archiving and can remove the retained local state you are trying to preserve.

If there is no faded icon, reinstall the deleted app
A deleted app can normally be downloaded again, but reinstalling is not the same as restoring its local files.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Manage apps & device, then open the Manage tab.
- Change the filter from installed apps to Not installed.
- Select the app and tap Install (or Enable if it was disabled).
- Launch the app and sign in to the account that previously held your data.
For a paid app or paid content, use the same Google Account that made the purchase. Google says compatible purchases can be used again on another Android device without paying again when that account is used. A different account may show a purchase as unavailable even when the app itself is free to reinstall.
What a reinstall can and cannot bring back
- Server-side information, subscriptions and cloud-synced documents may return after you sign in.
- Files stored only in the app’s private local storage may be missing.
- Offline downloads, custom settings, locally stored game saves and session tokens may not survive an uninstall.
- The app may use its own export, import or cloud-restore function; follow that app’s instructions if available.
Do not assume that seeing the app in the “Not installed” list proves that its previous data is backed up. The list records app availability for your account, not the contents of the app’s private storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the app opens but your data is missing
1. Confirm the account and app identity
Open the app’s account or profile screen and verify the email address, sign-in provider and workspace or server. Many apparent data losses are caused by signing in with a different account, choosing a different region or opening a similarly named app.

2. Look for the app’s own sync or restore controls
Search the app’s settings for labels such as Sync, Cloud save, Backup, Import or Restore purchases. App-specific behavior is controlled by the developer, so Android cannot promise that every setting or file will return. If the app has an export file or a documented restore process, use that before making further changes.
3. Check Android backup status
- Open Settings.
- Go to Google, then Backup. The exact path can vary by manufacturer and Android release.
- Confirm which Google Account is used for backup and review the most recent backup time.
- If a backup is pending, connect to power and a reliable network and allow it to complete.
Google states that a device backup can include apps and app data, but also warns: “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” A Google One backup may take up to 24 hours to complete. That is a possible backup-completion window, not a guaranteed restoration time and not proof that this particular app’s data was captured.
4. Avoid destructive troubleshooting
- Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data on the app while investigating.
- Do not uninstall a partially restored app unless the developer’s instructions require it.
- Do not reset the phone merely because one app opened without its content.
- Do not install an unverified APK that could be a different build, contain malware or lack access to the original package’s data.
What Android Auto Backup actually covers
Android Auto Backup is useful context, but it is not a universal undelete tool. Android Developers document it for eligible apps that target and run on Android 6.0 (API level 23) or later. An app can customize what is included or disable backup, and Android excludes cache and no-backup directories by default.

| 25 MB allocation per app user | This is a developer-side allocation, not a promise that 25 MB of the app’s files exists in your backup. |
| Eligibility starts with Android 6.0 / API 23-era requirements | Older or otherwise ineligible apps may not participate in Auto Backup. |
| The app can configure or disable backup | Two apps with similar data can have very different recovery results. |
| Cache and no-backup directories are excluded by default | Temporary downloads and intentionally excluded files should not be expected after restore. |
| Restore depends on supported backup datasets and install/setup conditions | Simply reinstalling an app does not force Android to restore every historical file. |
The 25 MB figure describes the Auto Backup allocation for each app user in the Android Developers documentation accessed in 2026. It is not a measurement of typical user recovery and should not be read as a guarantee of recoverable data.

Archive, uninstall and clear-storage recovery compared
| State | Software present? | Icon present? | What Android retains | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Archived | No; software and permissions are removed until restored | Usually yes, faded | App data and the launcher icon, according to Google’s archive description | Tap the icon, or restore through App info or the store listing |
| Uninstalled/deleted | No | Usually no | Recovery depends on the app’s server sync and any Android backup | Install from Play Store’s “Not installed” filter using the correct account |
| Storage cleared | Usually yes | Yes | Local app data is deleted by the clear-storage operation | Use the app’s cloud restore or a compatible Android backup; do not clear storage again |
When the normal restore route fails
The faded icon is missing
Search Settings for the app name, then check the store’s “Not installed” list. The app may have been uninstalled rather than archived, or the launcher may have removed the shortcut while the package remains installed. Open Settings > Apps and inspect the app’s status before taking action.
The store says the app is unavailable
An archived app can be restored through the standard route only while its listing remains available to the device. A withdrawn, region-restricted or incompatible listing may block installation. Contact the developer for an official replacement or data-export option; contact the device manufacturer if the store or archive controls are malfunctioning.
The download stops or loops
- Check free storage and remove enough space for the app download.
- Switch to a stable connection and retry.
- Restart the phone, then revisit the app’s details page.
- Confirm that automatic date and time are enabled, since incorrect device time can interfere with store authentication.
- Check whether the phone has work-profile, parental-control or administrator restrictions.
These steps address installation problems without deleting the app’s retained data. Avoid clearing Play Store or app storage unless official device support specifically instructs you, because clearing storage has destructive consequences for the target app.
The app reinstalls but shows an empty account
Verify the sign-in method, account address, server or workspace, and any in-app sync switch. If the app’s service no longer has the records, Android backup cannot recreate server data that was never included in the backup dataset. The developer is the only reliable source for app-specific retention and restore behavior.
Best Value
The phone was replaced or reset
Sign in on the new or reset device with the Google Account used for the previous backup and install the app from Play Store. During device setup, Android may offer a supported backup to restore. Whether the app’s settings and files return depends on the app’s backup eligibility, configuration and the backup dataset available at setup.
How to preserve data before archiving or removing an app
- Turn on the app’s own sync or cloud-save feature and wait for a successful sync indicator.
- Use the app’s export function to create a file, then store that file outside the app’s private storage.
- Confirm the Google Account used for Android backup and review the latest backup time.
- Keep enough free storage for a future reinstall.
- Record the exact app name, developer, account and sign-in method so you can select the correct listing later.
- For irreplaceable records, keep an independent copy; Android backup availability is app-dependent.
Archiving is generally safer than uninstalling when the goal is to free space temporarily, because the archive state keeps the icon and app data. It still removes the software, permissions, temporary files and notifications until the app is restored.
A decision checklist for getting the data back
- Is there a faded icon? Tap it first; this is the intended archive restore path.
- If not, is the app in Play Store’s “Not installed” list? Reinstall it with the original Google Account.
- Is the app installed but empty? Check account identity and the app’s sync or restore tools.
- Was storage cleared? Stop destructive actions and investigate app backup or cloud recovery.
- Is the listing unavailable? Contact the app developer or device manufacturer; do not use an unverified APK as a recovery shortcut.
- Does the device support the feature? Account for Android version, manufacturer interface, hardware support, store availability and free space.
What you can realistically expect
An archived app normally offers the best recovery odds because Android retains its app data by design. A deleted app can be reinstalled, but local files and settings return only if the app or Android backup preserved them. Cleared storage is the most serious case on the current device because the clear operation removes local app data; recovery then depends on an existing backup or the app’s own cloud service.
Use the least destructive path first: restore the faded icon, then reinstall from the correct account, then investigate app-specific sync and Android backup. Treat backup limits, the possible 24-hour backup window and the 25 MB Auto Backup allocation as technical qualifications—not promises that every file will be recovered.
