If Windows Backup was enabled before you reinstalled Windows, sign in during setup with the same Microsoft account that created the backup and select the offered device backup. Windows will restore the accessibility preferences supported for your Windows version. It will not necessarily restore every accessibility toggle, app preference, or third-party assistive-technology configuration, so inspect the settings catalog and check the result manually after setup.
This procedure applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 11 labels the area Accessibility; most Windows 10 installations use Ease of Access. You can open Settings with Win+I, or jump directly to the accessibility page with Win+U. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

What must be true for an automatic restore
Windows does not reconstruct accessibility preferences from the installation media alone. The setup restore screen depends on a Windows Backup configuration that was saved before the reinstall and is associated with the Microsoft account you use during setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- A backup must have existed before Windows was reinstalled.
- You must sign in with the same Microsoft account that created that backup.
- The computer must be online during setup so Windows can find the backup.
- The setting you want must be among the supported items in Microsoft’s current Windows Backup Settings Catalog.
- On a work or school computer, organizational policy must permit preference backup and restore.
Microsoft describes the process this way: “When you get a new PC or if you have to reinstall Windows, when you’re setting it up, just log in with the same Microsoft account that you used to make the backup here.” (Microsoft Support: Back up and restore with Windows Backup.)

Windows 11 versus Windows 10
The names and locations differ slightly. In Windows 11, use Settings > Accessibility. In Windows 10, use Settings > Ease of Access. Keyboard shortcuts such as Win+U work as a quick route to the relevant settings area on supported editions.

|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | Settings > Accessibility | Contrast themes | Current Microsoft-supported release family |
| Windows 10 | Settings > Ease of Access | High contrast | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
Microsoft’s navigation and terminology are documented in its accessibility guidance (set up your device to work with accessibility and change color contrast in Windows).
Personal, work, and school accounts
The consumer Windows Backup app is designed primarily for personal Microsoft accounts. A work or school account may be unable to use preference backup, or an administrator may restrict what is synchronized. Microsoft’s screen-reader instructions say organizational users should ask whether their organization permits the feature and points them toward enterprise state-roaming information instead of assuming consumer backup will apply.

Ask which account owns Windows settings backup, whether policy allows accessibility preferences to roam, and whether the organization has another profile or device-management restore process. Do not create a personal backup and assume it will override company policy.
Back up accessibility preferences before reinstalling
Do these checks while the old Windows installation still works. If the reinstall has already happened and no backup was made, skip to the manual recovery section; the setup wizard cannot create a historical backup after the source installation is gone.

- Open Windows Backup. Select Start, search for Windows Backup, and open it. You can also open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup on supported versions.
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account. Confirm that the account shown is the one you will use after reinstalling. A different personal account, an alias that is not the backup owner, or a work account can lead to an empty restore offer.
- Review Remember my preferences. Expand the preference options and make sure Accessibility is selected. Other preference categories may be useful, but enabling them does not expand the accessibility catalog.
- Run Back up. Start the backup operation and wait for Windows Backup to show that the operation completed or that your preferences are up to date. Do not begin the reinstall while the app still reports a pending or failed operation.
- Check the Settings Catalog. Open Microsoft’s Windows Backup Settings Catalog and look for the exact accessibility item you depend on. The catalog separates Windows 11 and Windows 10 entries and can change as Microsoft updates Windows.
- Record anything outside the catalog. Write down values for screen-reader voice and startup behavior, Magnifier options, contrast or theme choices, pointer size and color, text size, keyboard interaction settings, and any application-specific settings. This record is your fallback if an item is not supported.
The catalog is the authority for individual coverage. Saying that “Accessibility” is backed up does not mean that every switch on the Accessibility page is saved. Microsoft’s catalog currently includes examples such as text size in Windows 11 and display and mouse-pointer preferences in the Windows 10/Ease of Access material, but it does not promise complete coverage of all built-in features.
Restore during Windows setup
- Connect to the internet. Use Wi-Fi or Ethernet during the out-of-box setup. The backup list is retrieved from Microsoft’s service, so an offline setup cannot reliably present it.
- Sign in with the backup account. Enter the same Microsoft account used in Windows Backup on the previous installation. If setup asks whether to use a local account or Microsoft account, choose the Microsoft account route for this restore.
- Wait for the backup choice. Setup can display available backups associated with the account. If there is more than one device, select More options, review the device names or dates shown, and choose the backup belonging to the installation you replaced.
- Continue with the restore experience. Accept the selected backup and let setup finish. Keep the computer connected while Windows applies the saved preferences; interrupting setup can leave the restore incomplete.
- Reach the desktop and verify. Open the accessibility page for your Windows version and test the features you need. Do not treat the appearance of a restore confirmation as proof that every preference was applied.
Microsoft’s screen-reader documentation explains the account relationship: “When Windows backup is turned on, Windows backs up the settings you choose across all your Windows 11 devices that you’ve signed in to with your Microsoft account.” (Use a screen reader to back up and restore data on Windows.)
Verify the restored accessibility settings
Windows 11 checklist
Press Win+U, or open Settings > Accessibility. Check the categories that affect how you work:
- Vision: text size, visual effects, mouse pointer and touch indicator, magnifier, color filters, and contrast themes.
- Hearing: captions and audio-related visual alerts where applicable.
- Interaction: keyboard, mouse, touch, speech, and related control options.
- Built-in assistive tools: Narrator and Magnifier startup and shortcut behavior.
For contrast, Windows 11 uses Contrast themes. Microsoft’s current instructions are at Change color contrast in Windows. Compare the selected theme, contrast colors, and activation shortcut with the values you recorded before reinstalling.
Windows 10 checklist
Open Settings > Ease of Access or press Win+U. Review Display, Mouse pointer, Magnifier, Narrator, High contrast, Keyboard, and other categories that you previously customized. Windows 10 calls the contrast feature High contrast, not Contrast themes. Because Windows 10 is out of support, consider moving to a supported Windows 11 device or installation when your hardware and assistive-technology requirements allow it.

Test before installing all applications
Sign out and sign back in, then test the accessibility features from the sign-in screen and on the desktop. A preference can look correct in Settings but fail in a specific application, at a particular display scale, or with a device driver that has not yet been installed. Verify that your screen reader speaks the sign-in controls, that pointer or text changes are visible, and that keyboard commands work before you restore a large application set.

Reapply settings that Windows did not restore
Use the catalog and your pre-reinstall notes to distinguish an unsupported item from a failed restore. Apply missing options manually rather than repeatedly resetting the entire backup.
Narrator
In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Narrator; in Windows 10, open Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator. Turn on the options you require and check startup behavior. The shortcut Ctrl+Win+Enter starts Narrator on supported Windows versions. Microsoft lists this and other commands in Windows keyboard shortcuts for accessibility.
Magnifier
Open Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier in Windows 11 or Settings > Ease of Access > Magnifier in Windows 10. Restore the magnification level, view mode, and startup preference. Win+Plus (+) starts Magnifier; Win+Esc closes it. Microsoft’s feature-specific instructions are in Use Magnifier to make things on the screen easier to see.
Contrast, color, and text
Re-select the saved Contrast theme in Windows 11 or High contrast theme in Windows 10. Then verify color filters and text size separately; choosing a contrast theme does not necessarily restore every visual preference. Increase text size through the Display or Accessibility controls and check an actual application, because some programs use their own scaling settings.

Pointer and keyboard behavior
Restore pointer size, pointer color, cursor thickness, Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, Toggle Keys, and keyboard shortcuts from the relevant Accessibility or Ease of Access pages. Test each option with the keyboard and mouse you actually use. Driver utilities and application-level remapping tools are separate from Windows Backup and may need their own installation and configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Windows Backup does not guarantee
Windows Backup restores only supported settings listed for the relevant release in the catalog. It does not promise to capture every accessibility toggle, a third-party screen reader’s profile, a specialist input device’s driver configuration, or an application’s private preferences. A successful restore can therefore be partial without being an error.
| Item to check | What to expect | Action if missing |
|---|---|---|
| Windows accessibility preference listed in the catalog | May be restored when included in the backup | Inspect the setting after setup and reapply it if necessary |
| Accessibility switch not listed for your Windows version | Coverage is not established by Windows Backup | Use your notes and configure it manually |
| Third-party assistive-technology profile | Not promised by the Windows catalog | Reinstall the software and restore its own profile or backup |
| Device driver or specialist hardware configuration | Not an accessibility preference backup item | Install the current driver and configure the device again |
| Application-specific accessibility setting | Usually controlled by the application | Open that application’s settings and restore its profile |
Keep a copy of your manual checklist in a location that survives the reinstall, such as a printed page or a separate device. Do not rely solely on files stored on the Windows system drive that you are about to erase.
Troubleshoot a missing backup offer
Work through these checks in order. They reflect Microsoft’s documented prerequisites and the most direct explanations for an absent restore choice.
1. Confirm the account
Compare the account used before the reinstall with the account shown during setup. Check the exact email address, including whether you previously used a personal account rather than a work or school identity. Sign out and restart setup only if you can do so safely; otherwise finish setup and verify the account under Settings > Accounts before attempting any further reset.
2. Confirm that a backup existed
After reaching the desktop, open Windows Backup and inspect its status. If the old installation never completed a backup, there is no historical accessibility configuration for setup to apply. Enabling backup after reinstall protects future changes but cannot recreate the missing pre-reinstall state.
Best Value
3. Check connectivity and device selection
Connect to a stable network, reopen Windows Backup, and look for more than one device entry. During setup, use More options when available and select the correct device backup rather than accepting a similarly named entry from another computer.
4. Check organizational policy
On a managed device, the organization may disable consumer Windows Backup or restrict preference synchronization. Ask IT whether an enterprise state-roaming or device-management policy is responsible. Do not bypass a company policy by moving work data to an unauthorized personal account.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall5. Compare the missing item with the catalog
If the restore offer appeared but one setting is absent, look up that exact setting in the version-specific catalog. If it is not listed, manual reconfiguration is the expected path. If it is listed and still missing, record the Windows edition and build, confirm that Accessibility was selected under Remember my preferences, and report the behavior through your organization or Microsoft support channel.
Account and privacy considerations
Windows Backup stores selected settings with the Microsoft account so they can be applied on another Windows device or after a reinstall. Only enable categories you are comfortable synchronizing. On a shared or managed computer, understand who controls the account and retention policy before saving personal accessibility preferences.
Accessibility settings can reveal how you use a computer, but they are not a substitute for backing up documents, photos, or application data. File History and other file-recovery methods address files; they do not restore Windows accessibility preferences through this setup flow. No external storage device is required for the Windows Backup preference restore itself.
A practical restore checklist
- Before reinstall: open Windows Backup and sign in to the intended Microsoft account.
- Before reinstall: select Accessibility under Remember my preferences and run Back up.
- Before reinstall: read the Windows Backup Settings Catalog for your exact Windows version.
- Before reinstall: record unsupported, third-party, and application-specific settings.
- During setup: connect to the internet and use the same Microsoft account.
- During setup: choose the correct device backup through More options if necessary.
- After setup: open Accessibility in Windows 11 or Ease of Access in Windows 10.
- After setup: test Narrator, Magnifier, contrast, text, pointer, keyboard, and application behavior.
- If something is absent: verify account, backup status, policy, and catalog coverage, then reapply it manually.
When to use a different recovery plan
Use Windows Backup when you need supported Windows preferences restored as part of a clean setup and you can use the original Microsoft account. Choose a different plan when you need a complete image of the old installation, a third-party assistive-technology profile, specialized hardware drivers, or application data. Those scenarios require the software vendor’s export/import feature, an enterprise management system, or a system-image recovery process; Windows Backup’s Accessibility selection is not a full clone of the old computer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The reliable expectation is therefore specific: Windows Backup can restore the accessibility preferences in its current catalog when the account, backup, network, and policy requirements are satisfied. Everything else should be verified and restored from your notes or the relevant application and device tools.
