How to Restore a Windows Service to Its Default Settings

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

Windows has no universal “restore every service to defaults” command. A service’s correct startup type, executable path, logon account, dependencies and permissions depend on the service and the Windows release. The safe method is to identify the exact service, inspect its current configuration, verify the intended values for that same version, and change only the field you can verify.

If a recent system change caused the problem, System Restore can undo a broader set of changes. If Windows component or protected system files are damaged, run DISM followed by SFC. Reset this PC is a reinstall-level option, not a first response to one misconfigured service.

What “default service settings” really means

A Windows service is identified internally by a service name and shown to users with a display name. Those names are not always identical. A service can also be affected by several independent settings:

  • Startup type, such as automatic, delayed automatic, demand (manual), or disabled.
  • The executable path and startup parameters.
  • The account used to log on and run the service.
  • Dependencies and load-order relationships.
  • Service permissions and failure-recovery behavior.

Because these values vary by service and by Windows release, choosing one startup type for every service is unsafe. Microsoft’s sc.exe config documentation lists syntax and possible values, but it does not define one original setting that applies to every installed service.

Microsoft’s documentation describes demand as the command-syntax default when the start= option is omitted. That does not mean every Windows service was originally set to Manual. Do not run a blanket command that changes all services to Manual or Automatic.

Diagnose the affected service before changing it

Identify the service and the symptom

Write down what actually changed or failed. “The service is stopped” is different from “the service starts and then stops,” “the startup type is Disabled,” “the service cannot log on,” or “the executable path was edited.” If the problem began after a clean-boot test, update, driver installation, security change or registry edit, record that timing.

Open the Services app by pressing Windows, typing Services, and opening the result. Open the affected service’s properties and note its display name. The internal service name is shown in the properties dialog; use that name in commands, not merely the friendly label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a stopped service is misconfigured. Some services are designed to start only when a feature requests them, and a service that is set to demand start can be healthy while idle. Conversely, changing a service to Automatic merely because an application is not working can create unnecessary startup load or conflicts. Diagnose the symptom and the service’s documented role first.

Use an elevated command prompt to inspect the configuration

Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Microsoft documents SC.exe as a utility for querying and modifying the installed-services database in Configuring a Service Using SC.

  1. Query the service with sc.exe qc <service-name>.
  2. Compare the reported startup setting, executable path, service account, dependencies and other entries with the service’s properties and with documentation for the same Windows release.
  3. Copy the output or record the values before making any edit. This gives you a reference for troubleshooting and for reversing an unsuccessful change.
  4. If it is a third-party service, use the software publisher’s instructions for the exact application version. Do not copy values from a different product or release.

For a service name containing spaces, use the exact syntax accepted by SC.exe and verify the result after running the command. If the command reports that the service does not exist, you probably used the display name instead of the internal service name.

Run the query before attempting to start or stop anything. A query confirms which service record you are addressing and helps distinguish a configuration problem from a temporary state problem. Keep the command output with your troubleshooting notes, especially on a managed computer where another administrator may need to review the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a reversible change

Before editing, make sure you can undo what you are about to do. Record the complete current value, not only the part that looks suspicious. For an executable path, include quotation marks and every startup parameter. For a service account, record the account format and whether credentials are required. For dependencies, capture the entire list rather than deleting one entry from memory.

Use an account with administrative rights and close applications that depend on the service when practical. A service can be shared by several Windows features, so changing it while a dependent operation is running can produce misleading errors. If the computer is managed by an organization, confirm that its policy permits service configuration changes; local administrator membership does not necessarily override management policy.

Do not make several speculative edits in one command or session. A one-field change gives you a clear cause-and-effect test and leaves a known value to restore. If you cannot establish the intended value from Microsoft documentation, the installed Windows release, or the software publisher, pause rather than guessing.

Change only a setting whose correct value is known

sc.exe config “modifies the value of a service’s entries in the registry and in the Service Control Manager database,” according to Microsoft’s command reference for Windows 10, Windows 11 and listed Windows Server editions. It changes only the options you supply; it is not a reset-to-original-state operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The syntax requires a space after each equals sign. For example, the form is:

sc.exe config <service-name> start= <verified-startup-value>

The value in angle brackets is a placeholder and must be replaced with a value confirmed for your service. A command such as sc.exe config <service-name> start= demand is an example of valid syntax, not a recommendation that the service should be Manual.

The space after start= is significant to SC.exe. The same rule applies to other options: use the documented option name, an equals sign, a space, and then the value. A missing space can cause a syntax error or prevent the intended setting from being interpreted. Treat every command shown here as a template, and replace the service name and verified value before running it.

Common configuration fields and their risks

Field What it affects When to edit it
start= How and when Windows starts the service. SC.exe supports startup categories including boot, system, automatic, demand and disabled; the exact valid choices depend on the command and service type. Only when documentation or a known-good comparison establishes the intended startup category.
binpath= The executable path and any required startup parameters. Only when the complete, correctly quoted path is verified. A wrong path can prevent the service from starting.
obj= The account under which the service runs. Only when the account and required credentials are known. An incorrect account can produce logon or permission errors.
depend= Services or groups that must be available first. Only when the documented dependency list is known; removing a dependency can break a feature.

Make one targeted change at a time. After each change, query the service again with sc.exe qc <service-name>, start or restart it through the Services app when appropriate, and test the Windows feature that depends on it. If the feature fails, restore the recorded value rather than guessing another one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful SC.exe response means that the requested entry was accepted; it does not prove that the service will run correctly. Check the resulting configuration, then test the actual feature. If a path, account or dependency was changed, a service may appear configured correctly while still failing at startup because a file is missing, credentials are invalid, or a prerequisite is unavailable.

If a clean boot disabled the service

Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can disable services temporarily to isolate startup conflicts. If your problem began during that procedure, follow Microsoft’s instructions for returning to normal startup: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

Returning to normal startup reverses the troubleshooting setup and re-enables services that you intentionally disabled there. It is not a general repair for an altered executable path, logon account, dependency list or permission. If a service was changed outside the clean-boot workflow, inspect and correct that field separately.

Do not treat clean-boot reversal as a reason to enable every service on the computer. The goal is to return to the normal-startup configuration that existed before the diagnostic test, following Microsoft’s procedure. If the service remains broken afterward, the clean boot was not the only configuration change or the underlying application issue lies elsewhere.

Choose the least disruptive recovery path

Recovery path Best fit Scope and trade-off
Correct a verified field with SC.exe One known service value was changed and the correct replacement is documented. Targeted, but an incorrect value can make the service or dependent Windows feature fail.
Undo a clean-boot change Services were disabled in System Configuration during clean-boot troubleshooting. Reverses that troubleshooting setup; it does not reset arbitrary service configuration.
System Restore A restore point predates the change and rolling back broader system changes is acceptable. Restores a wider system state, including registry settings, system files and installed-program changes. Microsoft says personal files are not affected.
DISM followed by SFC Windows component or protected system-file corruption is suspected. Repairs the Windows image and protected files; Microsoft does not describe it as a reset for arbitrary service entries.
Reset this PC Other recovery options are unsuitable and a Windows reinstall is warranted. Broadest impact. Apps and settings are removed, and personal-file treatment depends on the option selected.

Choose the narrowest path that matches the evidence. A known, documented startup change calls for a targeted correction. A problem that began immediately after a system-wide modification may justify System Restore. Evidence of component corruption points to DISM and SFC. A reset is appropriate only when the broader consequences are acceptable and other recovery choices are unsuitable.

Use System Restore when a suitable restore point exists

System Restore is appropriate when the service worked before a known system change and a restore point from before that event is available. Microsoft says it can roll back registry settings, system files and installed-program changes. Personal files are preserved, but applications and drivers installed after the selected point may be removed or affected.

  1. Save work and close applications.
  2. Start System Restore from Windows, or open it from Windows Recovery Environment if Windows cannot start normally.
  3. Select a restore point dated before the service problem.
  4. Review the affected programs and drivers if Windows offers that option.
  5. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart. Do not interrupt the process.
  6. After Windows returns, check the service and test the feature that originally failed.

Read Microsoft’s current guidance before proceeding: System Restore. Do not use this path merely because you do not know a service’s original settings; it rolls back many unrelated changes as well.

System Restore is not a substitute for a personal-file backup. Although Microsoft says personal files are not affected, the operation can remove or alter applications and drivers installed after the restore point. Make sure you understand that trade-off before confirming the restore, and record which point you selected so later troubleshooting has a clear timeline.

Repair Windows files with DISM and SFC

Use these tools when symptoms suggest component-store or protected system-file corruption: repeated Windows servicing errors, damaged built-in components, or SFC reporting that it could not repair files. They are not a substitute for identifying a changed service entry.

In an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt, run Microsoft’s sequence in this order:

  1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  2. When DISM completes, run sfc /scannow.

Wait for each command to finish and read its result. Restart Windows if requested, then check the service again. Microsoft documents the scope and order in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. Neither command promises to reconstruct an arbitrary third-party service configuration or recover an unknown original startup value.

Running SFC first is not the documented sequence for this repair scenario. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses, so let DISM complete before starting SFC. If both commands report that files are healthy, return to service-specific diagnosis instead of repeatedly rerunning them or changing unrelated services.

Use Reset this PC only as a broad recovery measure

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows. It is materially broader than repairing one service and should be considered only after targeted correction, clean-boot reversal, System Restore and file-repair steps are unsuitable.

  • Keep my files: preserves personal files but removes installed applications and settings.
  • Remove everything: removes personal files, applications and settings along with the Windows installation.

Back up important files before starting either option. Confirm that you have installation media, product credentials and application installers as needed. Microsoft’s current instructions are in Reset your PC and the broader Recovery options in Windows guide.

Even “Keep my files” removes applications and settings, so plan to reinstall programs and recreate any custom service configuration afterward. “Remove everything” has the greatest impact and requires a reliable backup of files you cannot replace. A reset should solve a wider Windows installation problem, not merely provide a way to avoid finding one service’s verified values.

Common problems after attempting a reset

“Access is denied” or the command will not run

SC.exe configuration changes require administrative rights. Close the window, open Terminal or Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and repeat the query first. If an organization manages the computer, policy may prevent service changes even for a local administrator.

The service name is not recognized

Reopen the service’s properties in the Services app and copy the internal service name. The display name can contain spaces or differ substantially from the name SC.exe expects. Query the corrected name with sc.exe qc <service-name> before attempting a configuration command.

The service starts but the feature still fails

A running service does not prove that its executable path, dependencies, account permissions or related services are correct. Compare every relevant field with documentation for the same Windows release or application version. Check dependent services individually instead of changing unrelated services globally.

The service refuses to start after an edit

Use your recorded pre-change values to restore the field you changed. For a path or account change, restore the complete verified value, including required quotation marks and parameters. If you cannot verify the original value, stop making guesses and use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A third-party service broke after an application update

Do not apply settings copied from a different release. Consult the publisher’s support instructions for the installed version, or repair or reinstall that application if its service registration is damaged. Windows’ built-in recovery tools can repair system components but are not documented as a universal repair for vendor-specific service databases.

The command appears to succeed, but nothing changes

Query the service again and confirm that you used the internal name and the correct option syntax, including the required space after the equals sign. If the value is unchanged, check for policy restrictions or a competing management tool. Do not repeat the command with increasingly broad changes; determine why the targeted edit was not retained.

There is no restore point from before the failure

Do not create a new restore point and assume it contains the old service configuration. A restore point is useful only when it predates the event and rolling back its broader system state is acceptable. Without one, rely on a verified service-specific value, the software publisher’s repair instructions, or the documented DISM/SFC path when file corruption is indicated.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reset all Windows services to their defaults at once?

No. Windows services do not share one startup type or one configuration template, and Microsoft does not provide a universal reset command. A blanket change can disable required services or start services that should remain on demand.

Does setting a service to Manual restore its default?

No. demand is described as the command-syntax default when the start= option is omitted. That wording does not identify the original setting of every installed service.

What should I do if I do not know the original value?

Do not guess. Identify the exact Windows release and service, query the current record, and consult Microsoft or the application publisher for a matching reference. If a suitable restore point predates the change, System Restore can provide a broader rollback.

Will DISM or SFC rebuild a deleted service?

They are documented for repairing the Windows image and protected system files. They are not documented as a universal way to reconstruct arbitrary service entries, especially third-party registrations.

Will System Restore delete my personal documents?

Microsoft says personal files are not affected by System Restore. It can still roll back system files, registry settings and installed-program changes, so review the scope before proceeding.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Is Reset this PC safe for one broken service?

It is much broader than necessary for one known service value. “Keep my files” removes apps and settings, while “Remove everything” also removes personal files. Consider it only when a Windows reinstall is warranted and backups are complete.

A safe decision checklist

  • Have you identified the internal service name rather than only its display name?
  • Do you know whether the symptom is a stopped service, disabled startup, bad path, logon failure, dependency issue or permission change?
  • Have you captured the current output of sc.exe qc <service-name>?
  • Is the replacement value documented for this exact Windows release or application version?
  • Are you changing one field instead of applying a blanket startup type?
  • Was the change part of a clean-boot test that should simply be returned to normal startup?
  • Would System Restore’s broader rollback be acceptable, and does a suitable restore point predate the problem?
  • Are DISM and SFC appropriate because Windows files appear damaged, rather than because a service value is unknown?
  • Have you backed up important files before considering Reset this PC?

The reliable approach is therefore service-specific: inspect first, verify the intended value, change only that value, and escalate to broader recovery only when the evidence points to a system-wide change or Windows corruption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a command that restores every Windows service to its factory settings?

No. Service defaults differ by service and Windows release. Identify the service, verify its intended values, and change only the documented field.

Why does sc.exe config require a space after the equals sign?

That spacing is part of SC.exe command syntax. Use forms such as start= demand, replacing the example value only after verifying it for the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can System Restore fix a service changed by a registry edit?

A suitable restore point may roll back the registry and other system changes, but it also affects installed programs and system files. Use it only when that broader rollback is acceptable.

Should I use Reset this PC if one service will not start?

Usually not. Correct a verified service field or use a matching recovery path first. Reset this PC removes apps and settings, and the Remove everything option also removes personal files.

The Bottom Line

There is no safe one-click reset for all Windows services. Identify the internal service name, inspect it with sc.exe qc, verify the correct values for the same Windows or application version, and edit only the field you can prove. Reverse clean-boot changes with Microsoft’s normal-startup procedure; use System Restore for a suitable pre-change rollback, DISM followed by SFC for suspected Windows file corruption, and Reset this PC only as a last, broad recovery measure.
