How to Restore a PS5 That Won’t Boot After a Failed Jailbreak

If your PS5 will not reach the home screen after a failed jailbreak or other modification, start with Sony’s official Safe Mode recovery sequence. Try Repair Console Storage and an official system-software update before considering a reinstall. A reinstall is a last resort because it deletes every item stored on the console. If Safe Mode will not appear or the official procedures fail, stop repeated attempts and use Sony’s repair-support route.

Sony’s documentation does not provide a jailbreak-specific diagnosis. The steps below are therefore a cautious recovery path for a PS5 that cannot boot, not a guarantee that a particular exploit failure, corrupted installation or hardware fault can be repaired.

What can—and cannot—be established about a failed jailbreak

Sony’s support pages explain how to recover a PS5 that cannot start normally, update its system software from a USB drive, reinstall the system software and troubleshoot Safe Mode. They do not identify the technical cause of a failed jailbreak, tell you which exploit or firmware state is involved, or establish whether an individual console is suffering from software corruption, a failed modification or hardware damage.

Sony does warn that a console altered outside its official procedures may not operate properly or may be unable to install official update data. Its wording is a general warning, not a diagnosis of your console and not a promise that reinstalling will succeed. Questions about a particular firmware version, exploit chain, permanent damage or warranty outcome remain unanswered by the recovery documentation.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Support

That warning determines the order of operations in this guide: preserve data where possible, use Safe Mode’s non-erasing options first, and only use the reinstall option when the alternatives have failed and losing local data is acceptable.

Prepare before attempting recovery

Do not keep power-cycling the console indefinitely or try random files from unofficial sources. Set aside the modified console and gather the items needed for Sony’s documented process.

  • A DualSense controller and a USB cable capable of carrying data. The controller must be connected by USB in Safe Mode.
  • A computer with internet access to obtain the official system-software file from Sony’s current PlayStation support page.
  • A basic USB flash drive that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Back up anything on that drive first because formatting erases the drive.
  • A known-good HDMI cable and display, plus a power cable and another USB cable if available for troubleshooting.
  • Time to read each Safe Mode option carefully. Several options can remove data even though Repair Console Storage is described as non-erasing.

If the console still displays a warning, error code or partial menu, photograph it or write down the exact wording before proceeding. If the screen is completely blank, note whether the power indicator changes and whether you hear the two Safe Mode beeps. Those observations help support staff, but they do not by themselves prove what caused the failure.

Choose the least destructive recovery option

Use this decision table to select the next step. “Safe Mode accessible” means the console reaches the Safe Mode menu; it does not mean the jailbreak or any unofficial modification is still present.

Option Data preservation Safe Mode required? What it does When to use it
Repair Console Storage Sony says it does not erase data Yes Repairs console-storage problems using Safe Mode First recovery action after entering Safe Mode
Update System Software Designed as an update rather than a full reset; do not assume every failure preserves data Yes Installs official system software, either over the network or from USB After Repair Console Storage, or when the normal update path cannot be used
Restore Default Settings Sony says it does not delete console-storage content Yes Returns settings to their defaults Only when a settings problem is suspected and you understand the effect
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database Safe Mode warns that some operations can result in data loss; read the on-screen notice Yes Clears temporary data or rebuilds the content database Use only after reading the selected sub-option and its warning
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Deletes all data on the console Yes Replaces the system software using the reinstallation file Last resort when non-erasing recovery and an official update fail
Repair support Depends on the service process No Escalates a console that cannot enter Safe Mode or cannot recover through official steps When cables, power cycling and the documented recovery sequence do not work

The table distinguishes Sony’s documented behavior from assumptions. In particular, do not treat every Safe Mode item as harmless simply because it appears in the same menu.

Enter PS5 Safe Mode

Safe Mode is Sony’s startup environment for basic functions when the console cannot reach the home screen. Follow the timing exactly.

  1. Make sure the PS5 is completely turned off. If it is on, hold the power button until it shuts down.
  2. With the console off, press and hold the power button again.
  3. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep, then release. Sony describes the second beep as occurring about seven seconds after the first.
  4. Connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. Wireless pairing is not the method used at this stage.
  5. Press the PS button on the controller. The Safe Mode menu should appear.

If the menu appears, do not select Reset PS5 immediately. Start with Repair Console Storage, then use the official update path if needed. Read every confirmation screen because the menu includes both data-preserving and data-erasing operations.

Work through Safe Mode without erasing the console

Restart PS5

Restart PS5 exits Safe Mode and attempts a normal boot. It is a quick check, not a repair. Use it after a successful storage repair or update, rather than repeatedly selecting it when the same failure returns.

Change Video Output

Change Video Output can help when the console is running but the display does not show a usable picture. It addresses output settings, not a failed jailbreak. If the screen remains blank, verify the HDMI connection and display input before assuming the operating system is unusable.

Repair Console Storage

Choose Repair Console Storage before any reset. Sony describes this option as not erasing data. Let the process finish without disconnecting power. When it returns to the menu, select Restart PS5 and check whether the home screen loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update System Software

If Repair Console Storage does not restore normal startup, choose Update System Software. A network update may be offered first. If the console cannot use its network connection or cannot find the update, use the USB procedure in the next section.

Restore Default Settings

Sony says Restore Default Settings does not delete content stored on the console, but it returns settings to their defaults. It is not the same as reinstalling system software. Use it only if you are prepared to configure settings again and have read the confirmation screen.

Clear Cache and Rebuild Database

This menu contains separate maintenance actions. Safe Mode provides the warning for the action you select; follow that warning rather than assuming both choices have identical effects. If the menu indicates possible data loss, stop and decide whether that risk is acceptable before confirming.

  • All of jump drives have been rigorously tested and formatted before leaving the factory; The default format of the usb stick is exFAT

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)

This is the destructive option. It removes all console data and requires Sony’s separate reinstallation file. Do not choose it as a routine “clean-up” step or because the console was modified. Use it only after the non-erasing repair and official update attempts have failed, and only after backing up anything still accessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install an official update from a USB drive

Sony’s manual-update procedure uses an ordinary update file, not the larger reinstallation file. Do not rename one file into the other or mix instructions from different pages.

  1. On a computer, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes existing files from the drive.
  2. At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5.
  3. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE.
  4. Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s current system-software page.
  5. Save the file inside the UPDATE folder with the exact name PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  6. Use uppercase letters for the folder and file names. Do not add a second extension such as .PUP.PUP, and do not place the file inside another nested folder.
  7. Safely eject the USB drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
  8. Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
  9. Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device, and follow the on-screen prompts.

Sony’s support page lists approximately 1.1 GB of free USB space for the update file. Treat that as a page-specific, changeable requirement rather than a permanent specification; check the live Sony page before downloading. The drive itself may need more free space for formatting and file handling.

If the PS5 says it cannot find the update file

  • Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not a different file system.
  • Check that the path is exactly PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP from the USB drive’s top level.
  • Check capitalization: Sony specifies uppercase folder and file names.
  • Confirm that the download completed and that the computer did not silently append another extension.
  • Download the file again from Sony’s official page if the file is incomplete or corrupted.

If the same official file is rejected after those checks, do not substitute files from forums or unofficial mirrors. Move to the documented repair route or, if you have not yet tried it and accept total data loss, the separate reinstallation procedure.

Reinstall PS5 system software only as a last resort

Reinstallation is different from an ordinary update. Sony requires the reinstallation file and the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). It deletes all data on the PS5, including local game data, captures, settings and other console-stored content. Cloud copies or external backups are useful only if they already exist and are available after recovery; a reinstall cannot recreate data that was never backed up.

  1. Back up any accessible data before starting. If the console cannot boot and no backup exists, assume local data may be lost.
  2. Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create the folders PS5 and, inside it, UPDATE.
  3. Download Sony’s PS5 reinstallation file, not the ordinary update file.
  4. Save it as PS5UPDATE.PUP in PS5/UPDATE, using uppercase letters exactly as Sony specifies.
  5. Insert the drive into the console and enter Safe Mode: power off, hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
  6. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and confirm only after reading the data-loss warning.
  7. Leave the console connected to power while the process runs. Do not remove the USB drive or interrupt the installation unless Sony’s on-screen instructions explicitly tell you to.

Sony’s UK instructions list approximately 1.2 GB of free space for the reinstallation file. That figure is approximate, region-page specific and subject to change, so use the current Sony page as the authority. The reinstallation procedure is not a jailbreak repair method; it is Sony’s general system-software recovery procedure.

When Safe Mode will not appear

A missing Safe Mode menu does not prove that the console is permanently bricked. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance starts with display, cable and power checks.

  1. Turn the PS5 off completely.
  2. Check that the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both the console and display, and select the correct input on the display.
  3. Try another HDMI cable or another display input if one is available.
  4. Try a different USB cable for the controller and a different power cable if you have known-good replacements.
  5. Disconnect the PS5’s power cable for 20 minutes.
  6. Reconnect power, then attempt Safe Mode again by holding the power button until the second beep.

Keep the controller connected by USB when Safe Mode starts. If the controller still does not respond, the cable may be charge-only or faulty; try another data-capable cable.

Error-code-specific timing

For the cited SU-101337-5 error, Sony gives a separate instruction to unplug the power cable, wait five minutes, reconnect it and try again before attempting a Safe Mode reinstall. That five-minute interval belongs to that error-code procedure. It is not a universal recovery rule for every console that stopped booting after a modification; use the general 20-minute Safe Mode troubleshooting step unless your displayed error has its own Sony instructions.

Common symptoms and the documented response

Symptom First response Do not assume
Console reaches Safe Mode Try Repair Console Storage, then an official update Do not jump straight to Reset PS5
Safe Mode appears but the controller does nothing Connect the controller with a different USB data cable and press PS Do not assume the console is unrecoverable
Black screen or no visible menu Check HDMI, display input and alternate cables; try Safe Mode again Do not assume a software failure before checking the display path
USB update is not recognized Verify FAT32/exFAT, uppercase names and the exact folder path Do not use an unofficial update file
Update or repair fails repeatedly Record the exact message and follow Sony’s repair guidance Do not keep repeating destructive operations without reading warnings
Only reinstall remains available Confirm that the reinstallation file is being used and accept that all console data will be deleted Do not expect a guaranteed jailbreak-specific fix

When to stop troubleshooting and request repair

Escalate to Sony’s repair-support route when Safe Mode still will not launch after the HDMI, USB, power-cable and 20-minute power-disconnect checks; when the console cannot read the official update or reinstallation file despite the exact folder and filename requirements; or when the documented procedures repeatedly fail.

Have the console model, any displayed error code, the point at which startup stops, the steps already attempted and the cables or displays tested ready for support. Describe the modification accurately. Sony’s warning about altered consoles means official update compatibility may be affected, but it does not establish a diagnosis or guarantee how a repair center will handle an individual unit.

How to avoid making the situation worse

  • Use only files obtained from Sony’s official support page for the relevant operation.
  • Keep the update and reinstallation files distinct; they serve different Safe Mode choices.
  • Never interrupt a repair, update or reinstall by removing power because the screen appears unchanged for a while.
  • Read the data-loss notice before every Safe Mode confirmation.
  • Do not format a USB drive containing your only backup without copying its contents elsewhere first.
  • Do not treat a successful boot as proof that a modification is safe to repeat. The official documentation does not evaluate jailbreak methods or their failure modes.

What a successful recovery does—and does not prove

If Repair Console Storage or an official update restores the home screen, it shows only that the console can boot through that recovery path. It does not identify why the failed modification prevented startup. If a full reinstall succeeds, it establishes that the console accepted Sony’s reinstallation process; it does not prove that every hardware component is healthy or that future unofficial changes will work.

Conversely, failure to reinstall does not by itself prove permanent bricking. Sony’s documentation directs users toward repair support when official recovery cannot be completed. Keep the exact error and the sequence of attempts so support can distinguish a display problem, a removable-media problem and a deeper failure.
