How to Restore a PS5 After Installing Unofficial Software

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented way to attempt recovery is a complete Sony system-software reinstall from Safe Mode. Download Sony’s official PS5 reinstallation file, place it on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive in PS5/UPDATE with the filename PS5UPDATE.PUP, then choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). This erases all data on the console. Sony also warns that a console altered or modified in any way might not operate correctly or accept official update data, so a reinstall is an official recovery attempt—not a guarantee that every modification, suspension, or service restriction will be reversed.

What restoring a modified PS5 can—and cannot—do

Sony’s supported recovery route is to reinstall the console’s system software using the official reinstallation file and Safe Mode. The process removes the installed system software, formats the console’s user-data area, and installs the supplied official software again. It is intended for severe software problems and is described by Sony as the last troubleshooting step because it deletes everything stored on the console.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That process may return a usable console when the problem is damaged or incomplete system software. It does not establish that a console altered with unofficial software will be accepted by Sony, regain warranty coverage, or work exactly as it did before modification. Sony’s system-software notice says: “If you download or install the update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a console that has been altered or modified in any way, the console might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data.” Read the current notice on Sony’s PS5 system-software support page before starting.

  • What it can do: replace the console’s system software with the official package, provided the PS5 can enter Safe Mode and accept the file.
  • What it cannot promise: removal of every hardware or software alteration, reversal of an account or console suspension, restoration of warranty eligibility, or a successful boot after a failed modification.
  • What it always does: delete local user data when you select the full reinstall option.

Before you begin: data, equipment and risk checks

Back up anything the console still exposes

Reinstalling deletes games, applications, screenshots, video clips, local saves, settings and other user data on the console. Back up accessible saves and media using the methods available to your console and account before entering Safe Mode. If the PS5 does not boot far enough to expose its backup features, do not assume that a backup can be created from the recovery menu; proceed only if losing the remaining local data is acceptable.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Sony calls reinstalling a last troubleshooting step. Try less destructive troubleshooting first when the console still starts and the issue does not require replacement of system software. Once the reinstall begins, treat the existing local data as disposable. A USB drive used for the reinstall is not a backup by itself: it carries the official package, while your games, captures and saves remain at risk unless you separately copy or synchronize them through supported features.

Use only Sony’s official file

Download the PS5 reinstallation file from Sony’s official system-software instructions. Do not use a firmware mirror, a package supplied by a forum, a downgrade file or a file modified by another person. Sony specifically warns that data obtained from a different source or installed by a different method can leave the console unable to operate or install official updates.

There is no supported shortcut that converts an unofficial package into an official one. Do not combine files from different releases, rename a compressed archive and assume it is ready, or follow downgrade instructions intended for another model or region. The safest test of authenticity is that the file comes directly from the Sony support page linked for PS5 system software and is used exactly as Sony documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a computer and USB drive

You need a PC or Mac to format a USB flash drive and create the required folders. The drive must use FAT32 or exFAT, and Sony’s instructions call for approximately 1.2 GB of free space for the reinstallation file. The drive’s brand and total capacity are not prescribed in the cited instructions; it is only a carrier for the official file. Buying a drive is therefore an enabling expense if you do not already have one, not a repair product that can fix the console by itself.

  • Copy any files you need from the USB drive first; formatting erases its contents.
  • Use a direct USB connection rather than a hub where possible.
  • Keep the PS5 connected to reliable power. Do not begin immediately before or after a known power outage.
  • Do not turn off the console, remove the USB drive or disconnect power while installation is running. An interruption can damage the console.
  • Use a drive that the computer can format successfully and eject cleanly before connecting it to the PS5.

Prepare the USB reinstallation drive exactly

The folder names and filename are case-sensitive in practice, so use the uppercase spelling shown by Sony. On the formatted USB drive, create this path:

PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP
  1. Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT on your PC or Mac.
  2. At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5.
  3. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE.
  4. Download the official PS5 reinstallation file from Sony’s support instructions.
  5. Place the file inside UPDATE and rename it exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not add a second extension such as .PUP.zip, and do not place it in the drive’s root or in another folder.
  6. Safely eject the drive from the computer.

On computers that hide known extensions, a file displayed as PS5UPDATE might already have the .PUP extension, while manually typing another extension can create PS5UPDATE.PUP.PUP. Enable extension viewing or inspect the file properties before copying it. Likewise, extracting the download is required if Sony supplied it in an archive; Safe Mode needs the actual .PUP file, not the archive.

If Safe Mode later reports that it cannot find the file, check the format, folder nesting and spelling before trying another drive. Sony’s guidance specifically says to verify the folders and filename and to use uppercase letters.

Reinstall PS5 system software from Safe Mode

These steps use Sony’s current Safe Mode terminology. The second beep occurs approximately seven seconds after you begin holding the power button.

  1. Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not use Rest Mode. Wait until the power indicator is off.
  2. Enter Safe Mode. Press and hold the console’s power button. Keep holding after the first beep and release it after the second beep, roughly seven seconds later.
  3. Connect the controller. Plug the DualSense controller into the PS5 with a USB cable, then press the PS button. Wireless pairing is not available at this Safe Mode screen.
  4. Insert the prepared USB drive. Connect it directly to the console.
  5. Select the full reinstall command. Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), then follow the on-screen confirmation and installation prompts.
  6. Leave the console alone while it works. Do not disconnect power, press the power button, remove the drive or interrupt the process. The console will restart when the installation stages are complete.

Use a data-capable USB cable for the controller. A cable that only supplies power may leave the PS5 unable to detect the DualSense in Safe Mode. If the controller is not recognized, try another direct cable and USB port rather than changing the system-software file.

Sony’s Safe Mode guide states: “Reinstalling your console’s system software deletes all data on your console. Selecting this option should be the last step when troubleshooting.” The complete guide is available at Sony’s Safe Mode reinstallation page.

Choose the correct Safe Mode option

Safe Mode contains several actions that sound similar but have very different consequences. Select the reinstall command only when you intend to erase the console and replace its system software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Safe Mode option Local user data System software Use it for
Repair Console Storage Preserved Not removed Checking or repairing storage-related problems when the console offers the option.
Restore Default Settings Games, apps, screenshots, clips and saved data are not deleted Not removed Returning settings to defaults without a full data wipe.
Reset PS5 Deleted Not removed Wiping user data while leaving the installed system software in place.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Deleted Removed, then reinstalled from the USB file A complete system-software reinstall after serious corruption or an unofficial modification.

The first two options are not substitutes for a full reinstall when the installed system software itself is the problem. Conversely, selecting the full reinstall when you only needed a settings reset causes avoidable data loss. Read the wording on the screen carefully; “Reset PS5” and “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” are separate commands with different effects.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

The PS5 does not recognize the USB file

Power the console off and recheck the drive on the computer. Confirm that it is FAT32 or exFAT, has approximately 1.2 GB of free space, and contains exactly one path: PS5, then UPDATE, then PS5UPDATE.PUP. Use uppercase letters and check that the computer did not hide or append an extension. A file still compressed in a ZIP archive will not work. Download a fresh copy from Sony’s official page if the file is incomplete or damaged.

Try the drive again from Safe Mode after correcting those details. Do not replace the official package with an unofficial image or attempt a downgrade to make the console accept it. If more than one compatible drive is available, testing a second freshly formatted drive can distinguish a media problem from a console problem, but it does not change Sony’s requirement to use the official file.

Safe Mode will not appear

Make sure the console is fully off, not in Rest Mode. Hold the power button through both beeps and release after the second. If the console cannot produce the second beep or cannot keep power long enough to display Safe Mode, repeat the shutdown and power-on sequence once with the controller disconnected, then connect the controller by USB only after the Safe Mode screen appears. Persistent failure to enter Safe Mode is a reason to stop experimenting and contact PlayStation Support rather than disassemble the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installation stops or the console loses power

Do not repeatedly interrupt the process. Sony warns that an interruption can damage the console. Restore stable power, prepare the official file again and retry the documented Safe Mode procedure only when the console can be powered reliably. If the official reinstall will not start or will not complete after the file and power checks, use Sony’s repair route.

The reinstall completes but the PS5 still will not work

A successful file installation does not prove that every unofficial change was removed or that the underlying hardware is sound. Sony warns that an altered or modified console might not operate properly or accept official update data. Record the exact error shown, the Safe Mode option used and whether the installation reached completion. Then contact PlayStation Support through the PS5 Support page. Sony says the console may need repair when this process fails.

What a reinstall means for bans, accounts and service

A system-software reinstall is not a way to clear a suspension. The US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits specified use of unauthorized or modified hardware or software, security circumvention, downgrading and obtaining system software outside authorized distribution. It reserves possible remedies that include disabling software, console use, online or offline functionality, service access, warranty or repair. Read the US agreement at Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement; rules can differ outside the United States.

The US PlayStation Terms of Service also allow account or console suspension for a breach. A suspended console cannot use PlayStation services through any account, play games or modes that require online access, or access Store purchases. Disc games that do not require PlayStation services may still run, but a reinstall does not promise to restore any suspended capability. Consult the terms and support materials for your own country at PlayStation’s Terms of Service and the applicable local support site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s support notice also warns that altering a console can affect warranty or repair service. Treat that as a potential consequence, not a prediction that every modified PS5 will receive the same decision. Support staff will determine available service based on the region, device condition and applicable terms. Do not describe a successful reinstall as proof that Sony has reinstated service access or accepted the console for warranty work.

After the reinstall

If the console starts normally, complete the first-run setup, install system updates offered through the official interface, sign in to the appropriate account and restore only data from trusted, legitimate backups. Re-download games and applications through their normal official channels. Keep the USB drive containing the reinstall file separate from the console once recovery is complete; it is not needed for ordinary updates unless Sony’s instructions request it again.

If the console asks for an update but repeatedly rejects official data, do not cycle through third-party files. Note the error code and contact support. Repeating unsupported installation methods can create additional corruption and may affect service decisions. Keep receipts or identifying information for the console available, since support may need the model, serial number and region to determine the applicable route.

When to stop and request repair

Use Sony’s repair and support route when any of these conditions applies:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The console cannot enter Safe Mode after the correct power-button sequence.
  • The official file is correctly named and placed on a compatible drive, but Safe Mode cannot recognize it.
  • The reinstall repeatedly fails despite stable power and a freshly downloaded official file.
  • The installation completes but the console remains unusable or reports a hardware-related fault.
  • You need a decision about warranty, repair eligibility, an account suspension or a regional service restriction.

Have the console model, serial number, error code, installation result and region ready when contacting support. Do not open the console or install unofficial firmware as a routine next step; Sony’s published process directs users to support or repair when the official reinstall does not resolve the problem. Availability and terms for repair depend on the country and the condition of the device, so Sony support—not a third-party seller—must make that determination.

  • Connect the controller by USB, insert the drive and choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
  • Keep power and the USB connection stable until the console finishes.
  • If it fails, stop using unofficial installation methods and contact Sony support or repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will reinstalling official PS5 software remove every unofficial modification?

Sony documents the reinstall as a replacement of system software, but warns that an altered or modified console might not operate properly or accept official update data. Do not treat it as a guarantee that every software or hardware change is removed.

Does the full reinstall delete my games and saves?

Yes. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all data on the console, including local games, applications, captures, settings and saves. Back up anything the working console still exposes before starting.

Can I use any USB drive or a firmware mirror?

Sony does not prescribe a brand or total capacity, but the drive must be FAT32 or exFAT with about 1.2 GB free and the official file in the exact folder path. Do not use unofficial mirrors, modified packages or downgrade files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)?

Reset PS5 deletes user data but leaves the installed system software in place. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes the system software before installing the USB package.

Will a reinstall remove a PS5 or account suspension?

No. Sony’s US licence and service terms allow suspension and other remedies, and a reinstall does not promise to restore PlayStation services, Store access or online play. Check the terms for your country.

What if Safe Mode cannot find PS5UPDATE.PUP?

Recheck that the USB is FAT32 or exFAT, the path is exactly PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, the letters are uppercase and the file is not still inside a ZIP archive. Download a fresh official copy if necessary.

Should I open the console if the reinstall fails?

No. Sony directs users toward PlayStation Support and repair when the official process fails. Disassembly or additional unofficial firmware attempts can create further damage and service complications.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a USB drive itself a PS5 repair tool?

No. It only carries Sony’s reinstallation file. The console must still enter Safe Mode, recognize the file and complete the installation; Sony support determines repair eligibility if it cannot.

The Bottom Line

The only documented recovery attempt is Sony’s destructive Safe Mode reinstall: use the official file, the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP layout and stable power. It may not undo every modification or suspension. If Safe Mode or the official installation fails, stop experimenting and contact PlayStation Support.
