If a PS5 no longer boots normally after a jailbreak attempt or alternate operating-system installation, use Sony’s official update and Safe Mode procedures in the least destructive order: try the applicable Safe Mode repair or USB update first, then use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only when necessary. A reinstall erases every item stored on the console, and Sony does not guarantee that official firmware will reverse every modification made with unofficial software.
What recovery can and cannot guarantee
A failed jailbreak or alternate OS installation can leave a PS5 unable to start, unable to complete an update, or repeatedly returning to Safe Mode. Sony’s documented procedures are designed to repair update problems and reinstall the official PS5 system software. They are not a promise that every modified console will be recovered.

Choose the least destructive path first
Do not jump directly to a factory-level reinstall. Sony separates ordinary update and repair choices from the reinstall command. Start with the option that matches the symptom and move to the next level only if the preceding step fails.

Sony’s Safe Mode guidance also lists Repair Console Storage, Restore Default Settings, and Clear Cache and Rebuild Database as separate choices. They are not interchangeable with reinstalling. Read the on-screen description for the option available on your console and select the least destructive action that addresses the problem.
Prepare before changing system software
Back up what is still accessible
If the PS5 can start far enough to let you copy or synchronize important data using Sony-supported methods, do that before attempting an operation that could erase content. A full reinstall is explicitly destructive, so assume locally stored games, saves, captures, settings, and accounts may be lost unless you have a separate backup. If the console will not boot, do not delay an urgent recovery indefinitely trying to create a backup that the system cannot make.

Use a compatible USB drive
Sony’s manual procedure requires a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Ensure the drive has at least the free space Sony specifies for the file you are using: approximately 1.1 GB for the update file or approximately 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file. Those figures are procedural space requirements for Sony’s downloads, not a measurement of the console’s total storage.
Use Sony’s file, not a modified package
Download the update or reinstallation file from Sony’s official support page for your region. Sony specifically says not to download or install an update using data other than the official file supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Do not rename a third-party package, combine files from different guides, or use a jailbreak payload as if it were an official update.
Plan for uninterrupted power
Once installation starts, do not turn off the PS5 or remove power. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console. Choose a time when the power connection is stable, and do not press the console’s power button merely because the display appears unchanged for a while.

Create the USB update correctly
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT using a computer.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s official update file from the PS5 system-software page.
- Place the file inside the
UPDATEfolder and name it exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Eject the drive safely from the computer before connecting it to the PS5.
The resulting path must be PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Folder and file names are case-sensitive in Sony’s instructions. If Safe Mode reports that no update file was found, check every character, including the uppercase letters, and confirm that the file is inside UPDATE rather than one level higher or lower.

Enter Safe Mode and try the USB update
- Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is stuck in a loop, wait until it has stopped before beginning the Safe Mode sequence.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep; the second beep indicates that Safe Mode has started.
- Connect the prepared USB drive when the Safe Mode instructions call for external storage.
- Select Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device and follow the on-screen prompts.
This route is appropriate when an online download repeatedly fails or the console cannot use the normal update path. It does not use the reinstall command, so it should be attempted before the destructive reset when the problem is an incomplete or corrupted update rather than a system that requires complete replacement.
If the PS5 does not recognize the file
- Recheck that the USB drive is FAT32 or exFAT.
- Confirm the exact folder hierarchy:
PS5, thenUPDATE. - Confirm the filename is exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUP, including uppercase letters and the.PUPextension. - Make sure you downloaded Sony’s official update file rather than the reinstallation file or an unofficial package.
- Verify that the drive has about 1.1 GB of free space for the update file and that the download completed before you copied it.
Sony’s USB instructions specifically call out uppercase folder and file names when a file is not recognized. Correct the structure on the computer and repeat the Safe Mode update attempt rather than adding extra files or changing the filename to match a third-party guide.
Use Safe Mode repair options before erasing the console
If the PS5 reaches Safe Mode, review the non-reinstall choices shown by Sony’s Safe Mode guide. Repair Console Storage is a separate storage-repair operation. Restore Default Settings and Clear Cache and Rebuild Database are also separate options. The appropriate choice depends on the symptom displayed by the console; none should be selected casually, and none should be confused with the full reinstall.
When an update has failed, first follow Sony’s update troubleshooting and then the USB update path. If the console can complete one of the less-destructive Safe Mode operations and boot normally afterward, stop there. There is no benefit in erasing the system merely because the console once contained unofficial software if it is now operating correctly.
When to use “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)”
Choose the reinstall command only after the applicable update and Safe Mode troubleshooting steps have failed, or when Sony’s instructions specifically direct you to reinstall. Sony describes this as a last troubleshooting step because it removes the console’s data.

Prepare the reinstallation USB
- Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with approximately 1.2 GB of free space for Sony’s reinstallation file.
- Create the same two folders at the drive’s top level:
PS5, thenUPDATE. - Download the reinstallation file from Sony’s reinstallation support page, not merely the ordinary update file.
- Place it in
PS5/UPDATEand name it exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Safely eject the USB drive after copying the completed download.
The update file and reinstallation file use the same filename and folder structure, so identify the download by the Sony page and its purpose before copying it. Do not mix both files in the same UPDATE folder.
Run the destructive reinstall
- Power the PS5 off.
- Hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Insert the USB drive containing the official reinstallation file.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Read the warning and confirm only when you accept that all console data will be deleted.
- Leave the console powered and connected until the installation finishes and the PS5 restarts.
“Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” — Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Support.
That warning applies to the console’s stored data, not just the files associated with the failed jailbreak. Treat the reinstall as a clean software reset and make sure you have accepted the loss before confirming.
What to do if the reinstall fails
The PS5 rejects the file
Return to the computer and check the drive format, folder names, filename, and download source. The reinstallation file must be in PS5/UPDATE as PS5UPDATE.PUP. A correctly named file in the wrong folder is still invisible to Safe Mode. Replace an incomplete download with a fresh copy from Sony’s current page.
The installation starts but does not finish
Do not repeatedly interrupt the console or remove its power while it is installing. Sony warns that interruption can damage the PS5. If the console remains unable to complete the documented installation after you have checked the USB preparation, stop experimenting with unofficial files and proceed to official support.
The PS5 returns to Safe Mode after a successful-looking update
Use the Safe Mode guide and the update troubleshooting page again, selecting an applicable non-reinstall repair option before repeating a full reset. A loop after an update does not prove that the USB file was wrong, nor does it prove that reinstalling another copy will solve a modification-related problem.

The console will not enter Safe Mode
Safe Mode is required for Sony’s USB update and reinstall paths. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions exactly, including holding the power button until the second beep. If the console still cannot reach Safe Mode or cannot complete any official procedure, the documented home-recovery path has been exhausted; contact PlayStation Support or use Sony’s repair channel.
After the PS5 starts again
Complete the on-screen setup and confirm that the console can reach the normal system interface without immediately returning to Safe Mode. Check basic operation before attempting any further system modification. Use only official system-software updates going forward; Sony cautions that software from other sources or installation methods outside its instructions can prevent official update data from installing or cause improper operation.
If you performed the reinstall, expect to restore only data that exists in a backup or another supported location. The reinstall does not preserve the console’s previous local data simply because the same user account is used afterward. Keep the USB drive and note which Sony file you used until the console has completed setup and normal updates.
When to stop and request repair
If the official update, the relevant Safe Mode troubleshooting, and the documented reinstall all fail, Sony’s support instructions direct you to PlayStation Repairs or support to arrange service. Do not predict that a modified console will qualify for warranty service: Sony’s public pages do not establish eligibility for a particular jailbreak or alternate OS installation, and the decision can depend on the individual console and region.
When contacting support, describe the current symptom accurately, such as failure to enter Safe Mode, inability to recognize the official USB file, or an installation that will not complete. State that you used Sony’s documented file and procedure. Avoid sending support staff a modified package or continuing to test unofficial recovery methods while a repair case is open.
