If a PS5 became unstable after a jailbreak attempt, stop using unofficial files and use Sony’s recovery path. First determine whether the console reaches the Home screen, Safe Mode, or neither. Use the least destructive Safe Mode action that matches the symptom; reserve Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for a last resort. A USB update and a complete reinstallation are different procedures, and Sony does not promise that either one will reverse every jailbreak-related failure.
Start with the console’s current state
The correct recovery step depends on what the PS5 can still do. Do not begin by downloading a random firmware file or repeatedly interrupting startup. Write down the exact screen or error message, remove any unofficial update media, and use the branch below that matches your console.

If the PS5 still reaches the Home screen
A console that starts normally gives you the best chance to protect saves, screenshots and other content before attempting a destructive operation. Do not reset or reinstall merely because a jailbreak tool reported an error if the PS5 is otherwise stable.

Use the built-in update screen first
- Open Settings from the Home screen.
- Go to System, then System Software, and open System Software Update and Settings.
- Select the available update option and allow the console to complete the process without turning it off.
If the update completes and the PS5 remains stable, test the functions that failed—startup, games, storage access and network sign-in—one at a time. If the update fails, loops, or leaves the system unable to start, move to Safe Mode rather than trying another unofficial package.
Back up before any reset
While the console still works, copy any irreplaceable data using the backup facilities available on your PS5 and make sure you know the sign-in details for the accounts you use. A backup made before a reset is materially more useful than an attempted recovery after the storage has been erased. Do not assume that a later reinstallation will reconstruct local data.
How to enter Safe Mode
Sony’s Safe Mode menu is the central recovery tool when the normal interface will not load. The process is the same whether the problem followed a jailbreak attempt, a failed update or another startup error.
- Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is showing the Home screen, use the power menu rather than removing power while it is writing to storage.
- Press and hold the physical power button again.
- Keep holding it until you hear the second beep, then release it. The first beep sounds when you press the button; the second follows several seconds later.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB data cable. A wireless connection is not available in Safe Mode.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
Sony describes Safe Mode access and its available actions on its Safe Mode support page. If the menu does not appear after the second-beep procedure, see the failure branches later in this guide instead of loading an unofficial file.
Choose a Safe Mode option by symptom and data risk
Safe Mode contains several operations that look similar but have very different consequences. Select only the action that fits the problem.
| Safe Mode option | What it does | Data impact stated by Sony | USB drive or computer required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Checks and repairs the console’s storage structure when startup or storage access is the problem. | Sony says this does not erase data. | No. |
| Update System Software | Installs an official system-software update through the network or from USB. | The cited option description does not present it as a wipe; a failed or modified system can still behave unpredictably. | Only for the USB route. |
| Restore Default Settings | Returns settings to their defaults without reinstalling the operating system. | Sony says console-storage content is preserved. | No. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database | Clears temporary system data or rebuilds the content database when menus, indexing or loading behave abnormally. | The cited guidance does not assign it the same explicit data guarantee as Repair Console Storage or Restore Default Settings. | No. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console. Read the on-screen warning before confirming because this is a destructive recovery branch. | Review the confirmation screen for the exact consequence on your console. | No. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Formats the user environment and installs the system software again from the official reinstallation file. | Sony says the process deletes all data on the PS5. | Yes: a PC or Mac and a FAT32/exFAT USB drive. |
For an unexplained boot failure, a sensible order is Repair Console Storage, then the appropriate update action, then Clear Cache and Rebuild Database or Restore Default Settings when their descriptions match the symptom. Do not jump directly to either reset option simply because it is visible.

Manual PS5 system-software update from USB
A manual update is not the same as a full reinstallation. It uses Sony’s update download and the Safe Mode command Update System Software; it does not select the reinstall command. This is the appropriate USB procedure when the console can enter Safe Mode but cannot complete an online update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prepare the USB drive
- Use a PC or Mac and a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s PS5 system-software page.
- Save the file inside
PS5/UPDATEwith the exact namePS5UPDATE.PUP. Use uppercase letters for the folder and file names.
Use the update download, not the separate reinstallation download. Do not place the file in an extra nested folder, leave a second PUP file beside it, or rename it with an additional extension such as .PUP.PUP.
Install the update in Safe Mode
- Safely eject the USB drive from the computer and connect it directly to the PS5.
- Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB data cable and press PS.
- Select Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device and follow the prompts.
If the PS5 says it cannot find the update file, Sony’s stated checks are the folder path, the file name and uppercase letters. Recreate PS5/UPDATE, confirm that the file is exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP, and download the official package again if the file is incomplete. If the console still rejects it, stop trying alternate firmware and proceed to support.
Full system-software reinstallation: the last resort
Use this branch only after less destructive Safe Mode actions and the manual update have failed, or when Sony’s troubleshooting specifically directs you to it. Sony’s reinstallation instructions state: Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.
That includes local user content, so do not select this option while hoping it will preserve the existing installation.
Prepare the separate reinstallation file
- On a PC or Mac, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create the folder path
PS5/UPDATEin uppercase. - Download Sony’s PS5 system-software reinstallation file from the same official system-software support page. It is a different download from the ordinary update file.
- Save that file as
PS5UPDATE.PUPinsidePS5/UPDATE. - Remove other system-software files from the drive so you do not select the wrong package.
Run the reinstall
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the PS5.
- Enter Safe Mode by releasing the power button after the second beep.
- Connect the controller by USB and press PS.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), not merely Update System Software.
- Read the warning, confirm that you have accepted the data loss, and let the installation finish without interrupting power.
This is an official factory-recovery procedure, not a guaranteed jailbreak removal method. A reinstallation can restore an ordinary Sony system-software environment, but the support material does not promise recovery from every modification, hardware fault, storage failure or lost file. Do not install firmware obtained from a third party or use a method that Sony does not document.

Controller is not responding
Connect the controller directly to the console with a USB data cable, then press the PS button. A charge-only cable can power the controller without carrying the data needed by Safe Mode. If another known-good data cable is available, try it before selecting a destructive operation.
The console returns to Safe Mode after a normal restart
Choose Repair Console Storage first when the problem is a storage or boot error. Sony says that option does not erase data. If storage repair does not resolve the loop, use Update System Software and the manual USB procedure above when an online update cannot complete. Only then consider database rebuilding, restoring defaults, or the reset branches that match the on-screen diagnosis.
The USB update is not recognized
Check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, that the path is exactly PS5/UPDATE, and that the file is exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP with uppercase letters. Confirm that you downloaded the ordinary update file for Update System Software, not the reinstallation file intended for Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). If the official file is still rejected, do not substitute a package from a forum or a jailbreak tool.
The menu reports an installation error
Record the error code and the point at which installation stopped. Recheck the drive and file once, then use Sony’s repair channel if the error persists. Repeating an unsuccessful install with unrelated files can make diagnosis harder and may create additional storage or software problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the PS5 cannot reach Safe Mode
Safe Mode is required for both USB procedures. If the second-beep sequence never produces the menu, the official update cannot be selected from the console, so downloading more files will not solve that immediate problem.
- Turn the console off and repeat the power-button sequence, releasing only after the second beep.
- Use a wired controller connection and verify that the controller responds when the PS button is pressed.
- If Safe Mode still does not appear, stop experimenting with unofficial payloads, modified system files or repeated forced shutdowns.
- Open Sony’s PlayStation 5 Support guidance and use the Safe Mode troubleshooting route. When the official recovery process cannot start or complete, follow the PlayStation Repairs and support prompts for your region.
Support availability, warranty terms and repair decisions can vary by country. Provide the model, the visible error, whether Safe Mode appears, the file used, and the steps already attempted. That information is more useful than describing the console only as “bricked.”

Why Sony warns against unofficial recovery files
A jailbreak attempt can leave the console in a state that ordinary update instructions were not designed to diagnose. Sony’s system-software notice says:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“If you download or install the update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a console that has been altered or modified in any way, the console might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment also warns:
“Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Interactive Entertainment.”
These warnings do not establish that every modified PS5 will fail an official update, nor do they identify the cause of a particular console’s error. They do explain why the safest recovery path is to remove unofficial files from the process and use only the download, folder structure and menu command Sony specifies.
Common mistakes that make recovery harder
- Confusing update and reinstallation files: both use the filename
PS5UPDATE.PUP, but they are separate downloads for separate Safe Mode commands. - Putting the file in the wrong location: the required path is
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; a file stored at the USB root will not satisfy the documented path. - Changing capitalization: Sony’s troubleshooting specifically calls for uppercase folder and file names when the PS5 does not recognize the file.
- Assuming every Safe Mode option is a wipe: Repair Console Storage does not erase data, and Restore Default Settings preserves console-storage content; the options should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Assuming no data can be lost: the full reinstallation explicitly deletes all PS5 data, and a failed jailbreak gives no basis for promising recovery.
- Using a third-party PUP: Sony warns that data from another source or method can prevent normal operation or installation of official update data.
- Continuing after repeated failure: once the official file, path and Safe Mode choice have been checked, further unofficial attempts are more likely to obscure the fault than repair it.
A practical decision path
- Home screen works: back up important content, then use the normal system-software update screen. If that fails, enter Safe Mode.
- Safe Mode works and storage is the obvious issue: select Repair Console Storage.
- Safe Mode works but online updating fails: prepare the official update file on a FAT32 or exFAT drive and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
- Settings or database behavior is abnormal: use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database or Restore Default Settings only when the symptom matches that option.
- All less destructive recovery attempts fail and you accept total data loss: use the separate reinstallation file with Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Safe Mode never appears, the official file remains unrecognized, or installation repeatedly fails: stop and contact PlayStation Repairs/support.
What recovery can and cannot establish
Successful installation of official system software shows that the console completed that installation; it does not prove why the jailbreak attempt failed, guarantee that every previous symptom is gone, or recover data already deleted. Conversely, a failed installation does not by itself prove that the hardware is permanently damaged. The model, installed firmware, storage condition and exact modification are all relevant to diagnosis, and Sony’s public instructions do not provide a jailbreak-specific prognosis.
The defensible approach is therefore procedural: protect data while the console still boots, use Safe Mode’s least destructive matching option, distinguish an update from a reinstallation, and escalate through Sony when the documented path does not work.
