The correct recovery method depends on what “uninstalled” actually did. A built-in Windows app may still be installed but broken, present on the computer but unregistered for your account, or genuinely missing or damaged. Use Repair for a present app, Reset when you accept deletion of its local data, re-register an existing package with PowerShell when registration is missing, and obtain a new package from Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager when the package is absent and available there.
There is no universal reinstall command for every inbox app. Package names, Windows 10 versus Windows 11, account scope, and channel availability determine which path works.

Choose the recovery path before running a command
Start with the least destructive option that matches the app’s state. The table below separates the four situations that are often confused with one another.
| What you find | Recommended action | Effect on app data | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| The app appears in Settings but will not open or behaves incorrectly | Use Repair | Microsoft says Repair attempts to reload the app while retaining its data. | Repair cannot recreate a package that is no longer on the device. |
| The app is installed, but its configuration is badly damaged | Use Reset | Reset deletes the app’s local data and installs it in its initial state. Preferences and sign-in information can be lost. | Use only after Repair, or after backing up anything the app stores locally. |
| The package exists on the computer but is not registered for your signed-in account | Register the package with Add-AppxPackage |
Registration does not intentionally reset the app’s data. | A registration command for the current user must be run in a non-elevated PowerShell window. |
| No package is found, or the package is damaged | Obtain a new package through Microsoft Store or winget, if that app is offered there. |
The result depends on the app and installer; do not assume local data will be preserved. | Not every built-in app is available through either channel. |
| The missing app is Microsoft Store itself | Use Microsoft’s Store-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it like an ordinary removable app. | There is no generally supported removal-and-reinstall workflow. | Microsoft states that removing the Microsoft Store app is not supported. |
Identify the app and your Windows context
Write down the app’s exact name before searching for a package. “Photos,” “Calculator,” “Mail,” and “Microsoft Store” do not necessarily correspond to the same package name shown in PowerShell. If the app was removed only from one account, another account or the system image may still contain the package.

Check which Windows release you are using
Windows 11 normally uses Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Windows 10 uses Settings > Apps > Apps & features. The names of buttons and the list of available inbox apps can differ between releases, editions, and servicing updates, so do not assume that a menu shown on another computer will be identical.
Decide whether the problem is user-specific
If another Windows account can launch the app, the package is probably still on the device and the problem is registration or per-user data. If no account can find it, check for the package with PowerShell before trying to install anything. This distinction prevents an unnecessary download and avoids commands that affect every account.
Repair an app that is still installed
Repair is the safest first action when the app is visible in Settings. It attempts to reload the app without removing its data.
Windows 11 Settings route
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the app, select the three-dot menu beside it, and choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Repair if the button is available.
- Wait for Windows to finish, then launch the app from Start.
Windows 10 Settings route
- Open Settings and choose Apps.
- Open Apps & features and select the affected app.
- Choose Advanced options, then select Repair when offered.
- Try the app again. If the Repair button is missing, use the package checks described below instead of guessing at a package name.
Repair is not an acquisition method. If the app does not appear in either Settings list, Windows cannot repair it through that interface because the current user has no registered app entry to repair.
Use Reset only when losing local app data is acceptable
Reset returns an MSIX app to an initial configuration. Microsoft’s MSIX guidance distinguishes it from Repair: Reset deletes the app’s local data and installs the app fresh. That can remove preferences, cached content, and sign-in details stored by the app. Cloud-synchronized data may return after you sign in again, but do not rely on that for unsynchronized data.

Reset from Settings
- Open the app’s Advanced options page using the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above.
- Select Reset and confirm the warning.
- Start the app and complete its setup again if it asks for an account or permissions.
Reset from PowerShell
PowerShell’s Reset-AppxPackage cmdlet provides the command-line equivalent. Use a narrow package name so you do not reset several similarly named apps:
Get-AppxPackage -Name 'Microsoft.WindowsCalculator' | Reset-AppxPackage
The name in that example is only for Calculator. First identify the actual package name on your computer; do not substitute a different app’s display name and assume the cmdlet will find it. If the package is absent, Reset-AppxPackage has nothing to reset and will not download a replacement.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check whether the package exists but is not registered for your account
Windows separates a package’s presence on the device from its registration for a particular user. A package can remain under the Windows app installation directory while the Start-menu entry and launch registration for your account are missing.
Search the current user’s packages
Open a normal, non-elevated PowerShell window and search with a distinctive part of the app name:
Get-AppxPackage *calculator*
Replace calculator with a fragment of the target app’s name. If the command returns an object, note its Name, PackageFullName, PackageFamilyName, and InstallLocation. Those values identify the package more reliably than the icon or Start-menu label.

Inspect packages for all users
If the current-user query returns nothing, open PowerShell as administrator only for this inspection:
Recommended Free Tools
Get-AppxPackage *calculator* -AllUsers
The -AllUsers query can reveal a package registered to another account or retained on the device. Finding a result here but not in the non-elevated query indicates a user-scope registration problem rather than a missing package.
Register by package family name
Close the elevated window. To register the package for the account you are actually using, open a new, ordinary PowerShell window and run the family-name form with the exact value returned by your query:
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsCalculator_8wekyb3d8bbwe
The Calculator family name above is an illustration from Microsoft’s documentation. It is not a universal value. Substitute the target app’s own PackageFamilyName; copying the example unchanged for another app will fail or register the wrong package.
Microsoft warns that an elevated registration can target the administrator account instead of the intended signed-in user. Elevation is appropriate for the all-user inspection, not for this current-user registration step, unless the administrator account is deliberately the target.

Register from the package manifest
Microsoft also documents manifest-based registration. Use the actual manifest path reported by the package on your computer; the folder includes a version and architecture, so a path copied from an example is not portable:
$manifest = 'C:Program FilesWindowsApps<actual-package-folder>AppxManifest.xml'
Add-AppxPackage -Register $manifest -DisableDevelopmentMode
Replace the placeholder with the real package folder and keep the command in a non-elevated PowerShell window when the goal is your current account. The path must point to that app’s own AppxManifest.xml. Do not guess a version number, architecture suffix, or folder name. If the package is not present at the reported location, registration cannot repair it; move to the package-acquisition path.
Obtain a new package when it is missing or damaged
When neither the current-user nor all-user query finds a usable package, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager. This is a replacement-package operation, not a registration repair.
Check Windows Package Manager availability
- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt.
- Search for the app by name:
winget search <AppName>
For a name containing spaces, use quotation marks, for example winget search "App Name". Review the search results and confirm that the publisher and package identity match the app you intend to restore.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Install the identified app:
winget install <AppName>
Use the exact name or identifier shown by winget search. Depending on the package, Windows Package Manager may ask you to accept source or installer agreements. If the search returns no suitable result, do not invent an identifier or assume that every inbox app is published through winget.
Best Value
Use Microsoft Store when the app is listed there
Open Microsoft Store, search for the app’s exact name, verify the listing, and select Get or Install. Store availability varies by app, Windows edition, region, account policy, and servicing state. A private organizational Store can also expose packages that are not listed publicly. If the app is not offered through the Store available to your account, this route cannot supply it.
Installing a new package may not preserve local settings. Treat the installation as a fresh package deployment unless the app’s own synchronization or backup system restores your data.
Microsoft Store itself is a special case
Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation states: “Removing the Microsoft Store App is not supported.” That warning matters if the missing app is Store itself. Do not present Store as an ordinary inbox app that can always be removed and then restored with the same command used for Calculator or another package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Microsoft Store is absent, follow Microsoft’s Store-specific troubleshooting guidance for your Windows version and account. The ordinary Store installation path may be unavailable when the Store package has been fully removed, and Microsoft’s documentation does not promise a single PowerShell command that recreates it in every state. Avoid downloading an arbitrary app package from an unofficial site or applying a broad reinstall-all script simply because a forum post used it.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
Get-AppxPackage returns nothing for the current user |
The package may be registered only for another user, or it may be absent. | Run Get-AppxPackage ... -AllUsers from an elevated window. If that also returns nothing, check Store or winget availability. |
| The all-user query finds the package, but registration fails when elevated | The command is targeting the administrator account rather than the account that needs the app. | Close the elevated window and run the registration command in a normal PowerShell session for the intended user. |
| The family-name command says the package cannot be found | The family name was copied from a different app, truncated, or typed incorrectly. | Copy the complete PackageFamilyName value from your own query output. |
| The manifest path is not found | The package version, architecture, or installation folder differs from the example, or the package has been removed. | Read InstallLocation from the package output and append AppxManifest.xml. If that location no longer exists, obtain a new package instead. |
| Repair is unavailable | The app is not registered in the current user’s Settings catalog, or that Windows version does not expose Repair for the app. | Check package presence with PowerShell and use registration or package acquisition as appropriate. |
| Reset succeeds but the app opens as if it were new | Reset deliberately deleted local app data. | Sign in again and restore synchronized data. Do not use Reset again if preserving local-only data is important. |
winget search finds no matching app |
The app may not be published through Windows Package Manager, or the name used for searching may differ from its display name. | Try the exact product name and verify Microsoft Store. If neither channel lists it, the documented acquisition route is unavailable for that app. |
| The app installs but still does not launch | The package may be registered to a different user, or Windows components outside the app package may be damaged. | Confirm the package and registration in the affected account. If several inbox apps fail, treat the issue as broader Windows servicing trouble rather than repeatedly reinstalling one package. |
Verify the restoration
After Repair, Reset, registration, or installation, verify the result in the same account that needs the app:
- Search for the app in Start and launch it.
- Open the app’s Settings entry and confirm that it is listed under the current user.
- Repeat the non-elevated
Get-AppxPackagequery and confirm that it returns the intended package. - Test the function that originally failed, not just the splash screen.
- If the app is shared by several accounts, sign in to each account and check it separately; per-user registration is not automatically identical.
If the package is absent from both Store and winget, or if registration errors persist because Windows cannot access the package location, stop cycling through unrelated package names. Microsoft’s documentation supports app-specific recovery paths, not a guarantee that every removed inbox app can be reconstructed with one command.
What the official guidance establishes
Microsoft Learn’s guidance for modern, inbox, and Store apps separates package discovery, user registration, and obtaining a new package. Its Add-AppxPackage reference documents family-name and manifest registration; its MSIX repair guidance explains why Repair preserves data differently from Reset; and Reset-AppxPackage documents the reset operation. Those are different operations with different consequences.
The practical rule is therefore simple: repair a package that is present and functioning poorly, reset only after accepting data loss, register an existing package from a non-elevated session for the intended user, and install a replacement only when a supported channel actually offers that app. Microsoft Store removal is explicitly unsupported, so Store itself requires the Store-specific troubleshooting route rather than an assumed reinstall command.
