If your Samsung Galaxy is frozen, hold the Side (Power) and Volume Down buttons together for at least seven seconds, then release when it restarts. A correctly performed forced restart is not a factory reset and Samsung says it does not erase your information.
If the phone appears completely dead, charge it with an undamaged Samsung-certified charger and cable—even a fully drained battery may show no charging symbol at first. A Galaxy stuck on the Samsung logo, repeatedly restarting, or showing an update error needs a different path, explained below.

Choose the recovery path by what you see
The screen behavior and whether the buttons respond determine the safest next step. Do not begin with a factory reset: that operation erases personal data and downloaded apps.

| What the Galaxy is doing | First action | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Screen is frozen or taps do nothing, but the phone is otherwise intact | Hold Side/Power + Volume Down together for at least seven seconds | This is a forced restart. Samsung says a correctly performed forced restart does not erase information. |
| No screen, no vibration, and the battery may be empty | Connect a Samsung-certified charger and cable and continue charging | A fully drained battery may not display a charging icon immediately. Try another compatible charger and data cable if the accessories may be at fault. |
| Samsung logo remains on screen or the phone keeps restarting | Inspect for damage, try the button restart, then test Safe mode if Android can start | Safe mode prevents third-party apps from running, helping identify an app-related crash. |
| An update failed and an emergency-recovery screen appears | Use Smart Switch’s Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization | This Smart Switch procedure is documented for failed software updates, not as a universal cure for every no-boot condition. |
| Nothing changes after charging and restarting, or the phone is damaged | Contact Samsung Support or an authorized service center | A damaged battery, port, screen, circuitry, or other hardware cannot be repaired by a restart. |
These branches are deliberately not interchangeable. A force restart addresses a temporary freeze; charging addresses a possible lack of power; Safe mode and updates address software symptoms; and Smart Switch emergency recovery is tied to a failed update. Choosing the branch that matches the symptom reduces unnecessary resets and protects your files.

Force-restart a frozen Galaxy
Use the two-button command
- Remove any case that could prevent either button from being pressed fully.
- Press and hold the Side (Power) button and the Volume Down button at the same time.
- Keep both buttons held for at least seven seconds. Samsung Australia’s regional instructions phrase the interval as more than seven seconds, so continue slightly longer if nothing happens.
- Release the buttons when the Galaxy restarts or the Samsung logo appears.
Samsung’s current regional guidance describes this as the first response to an unresponsive phone: Samsung India’s “Galaxy phone not turning on” instructions and Samsung Australia’s equivalent guide both specify the Side/Power and Volume Down combination.
If the case blocks a button, remove it before trying again. Pressing one button substantially earlier than the other can fail to trigger the command, so start both together and maintain steady pressure. Do not keep repeating the command in rapid succession; hold it for the full interval, release, and give the phone time to respond.
What a forced restart does—and does not do
A forced restart interrupts a hung operating system and starts it again. It is different from a factory data reset, which deliberately wipes the phone. Samsung Philippines states: “If performed correctly, a forced restart will not erase any information from the phone.” That statement applies to the forced-restart command only; it does not promise that a reset, wipe, or other recovery-menu option will preserve data. See Samsung’s Galaxy power-on support page, updated April 29, 2024, for that specific qualification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A restart may leave you at the lock screen, or it may simply return to the Samsung logo if the underlying fault remains. It does not repair a broken charging port, failed battery, damaged display, or circuitry problem. If the phone reacts to the buttons but never completes startup, move to the boot-loop steps rather than treating another force restart as a cure.
When the Galaxy appears completely off
Check for obvious damage first
- Look for a cracked display, bent frame, liquid exposure, a loose or damaged charging port, or a cable that is frayed, crushed, or split.
- Do not continue using a charger or cable that is visibly damaged.
- If the phone is swollen, unusually hot, smoking, or emitting an odor, disconnect it and seek professional service rather than attempting more charging.
Samsung lists a temporary software freeze, a fully drained battery, a system malfunction, and—in some cases—a hardware issue involving the device’s circuitry as possible reasons a Galaxy will not turn on. Samsung India’s support article, updated July 22, 2026, presents these as possible causes, not a diagnosis of your particular handset.
Charge with compatible, undamaged equipment
- Connect a Samsung-certified or otherwise Samsung-approved charger and a cable compatible with your exact Galaxy model and connector.
- Plug the charger into a known-good wall outlet.
- Leave the phone connected even if the screen remains blank initially. A completely depleted battery may need time before any charging indicator appears.
- If charging still seems suspect, try a different compatible charger and data cable.
- After the phone has had time to charge, try the Side/Power button. If it remains unresponsive, repeat the force-restart procedure while it is connected to power.
Samsung does not give one universal charging duration for every Galaxy model, battery condition, and charger. Do not treat a fixed number of minutes as a guarantee that the phone should be working. The company cautions that incompatible, worn, or damaged accessories can cause damage or injury. Check connector and device compatibility before buying a replacement cable or USB-C charger; an accessory can address a charging-supply problem but cannot repair a failed port or battery.

Separate a charging problem from a display problem
A blank screen does not prove that the phone is receiving no power. After charging and attempting a restart, pay attention to vibration, notification sounds, warmth around the battery area, or recognition by a computer. These signs can indicate that the phone is running while the display or another component is failing. Test only with a compatible cable and avoid repeatedly plugging and unplugging a loose connector. Do not open the handset or attempt an unsupported battery or firmware repair; service personnel can test the port, battery, display, and board safely.
Fix a Galaxy stuck on the Samsung logo or caught in a boot loop
Start with the low-risk checks
- Inspect the phone and charging accessories for physical damage.
- Connect a compatible charger if the battery may be low.
- Perform the Side/Power + Volume Down forced restart.
- Allow the phone to complete one restart without repeatedly pressing buttons.
Samsung’s US troubleshooting guide for a device that will not start or is in a boot loop combines these checks with software troubleshooting. Open Samsung’s “Galaxy device will not start or is in a boot loop” guide if the logo returns after each restart. Note when the loop began and whether it followed an app installation, drop, liquid exposure, low battery, or software update; that history helps support distinguish software from hardware causes.
Use Safe mode to test third-party apps
If the Galaxy can reach Android, even briefly, Safe mode is useful for separating a third-party-app crash from a system or hardware fault. In Safe mode, third-party apps do not run. If the repeated restarts stop there, remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time, then restart normally after each removal.
Safe-mode entry screens and button timing vary by model, software version, and carrier. Follow the model-specific procedure in Samsung’s “Power on your Galaxy phone or tablet in Safe mode” guide rather than assuming that one key sequence works on every device. Once the phone starts in Safe mode:
- Uninstall an app added or updated immediately before the boot loop began.
- Restart normally to check whether the loop has stopped.
- If the phone still loops with third-party apps disabled, the cause is less likely to be an ordinary downloaded app; continue with update and service checks.
Safe mode is a diagnostic state, not a data-wiping operation. It also does not prove that the hardware is healthy: a phone can boot in Safe mode and still have a failing battery, storage component, or other intermittent fault. Keep a backup while Android is usable.
Install an available software update
If the phone boots normally and remains usable, check for an update in Settings using the labels provided by your model. Samsung’s US guidance also says Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC may present an update option when a newer version is available. Connect the phone by USB, open Smart Switch, and follow the prompts; keep the USB connection in place until the update finishes. Menu names and screens differ by Galaxy model and software version.

Do not start an update with a nearly empty battery or an unreliable cable, and do not disconnect the phone while Smart Switch is transferring software. If the update completes but the phone still loops, return to Safe mode and service checks rather than immediately choosing a wipe option.
Recover after a failed software update with Smart Switch
Smart Switch’s Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization workflow is intended for a phone whose software update failed. It is not a general-purpose method for every phone that has no power or every boot loop. The computer must be able to run Smart Switch and communicate with the handset as the guide describes.
Run Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization
- Disconnect the Galaxy from the computer.
- Close Smart Switch completely, then open it again.
- In Smart Switch, choose MORE, then Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.
- Select the device shown as requiring recovery.
- Follow the prompts displayed by Smart Switch and keep the connection intact while the recovery runs.
The exact controls and prompts are documented in Samsung’s Smart Switch Phone Recovery Guide. Do not disconnect the cable during an operation unless the software specifically tells you to. If the phone is not detected, check the cable and USB connection and use the prompts in Smart Switch; do not substitute firmware files or flashing commands from an unrelated model.

When emergency recovery repeatedly fails on one computer, Smart Switch can provide an emergency recovery code. Record that code and use the other-computer recovery option described in the same guide. This is a retry path for the update-recovery process, not evidence that the phone’s hardware is healthy. If the second-computer attempt also fails, stop repeating experiments and contact Samsung Support with the code and the update history.
Know when recovery instructions are not enough
Arrange Samsung service or an authorized repair when the phone remains unable to boot after a compatible charge and forced restart, when the charging port or phone is visibly damaged, or when the device shows signs of a battery or circuitry fault. Samsung’s boot-loop guidance directs users toward inspection and support when software steps do not resolve the problem: see the US troubleshooting page.
- Bring the exact model name and software version if you know them.
- Tell the technician whether the failure began after a drop, liquid exposure, battery depletion, or a software update.
- Take out removable accessories and, if the phone can still reach Android, back up important data before handing it over.
- Do not open the phone, bridge battery contacts, flash firmware from an unverified source, or use recovery commands copied from another model.
Samsung’s support pages warn that settings and screen layouts vary by model, software version, and provider. A recovery sequence that is valid for one Galaxy generation may not apply to another. There is no single repair price for all Galaxy phones: cost depends on the model, failed component, warranty, and local service assessment, so request an estimate from Samsung or an authorized center before approving paid work.

Protect your data while troubleshooting
Safe actions
- Force restarting with Side/Power and Volume Down is designed to restart a frozen phone without deliberately deleting user content.
- Charging, changing a cable, checking for damage, and testing Safe mode do not intentionally perform a data wipe.
- Updating through the phone’s Settings or Smart Switch follows Samsung’s supported software path; keep a backup whenever Android is usable.
Actions that can erase data
A factory data reset removes personal files and downloaded apps. It is not the next step merely because a Galaxy is stuck at the logo. If a recovery menu offers Wipe data, Factory reset, or similar wording, stop and confirm the consequence before selecting it. Use a reset only when you accept data loss and have a model-specific reason or Samsung’s service instructions. If your priority is recovering photos or messages, tell the service center before authorizing any reset or board replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical decision sequence
- Frozen interface: remove a restrictive case and hold Side/Power + Volume Down together for at least seven seconds.
- Blank device: inspect for damage, connect an undamaged compatible charger and cable, and keep charging even without an immediate icon.
- Logo or repeated restarts: perform the restart, then use Safe mode if Android can start far enough to enter it.
- Usable after boot: remove a recently added suspect app and check for a software update in Settings or Smart Switch.
- Update error screen: use Smart Switch’s Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization; if it fails repeatedly, retry with the emergency recovery code on another computer.
- No improvement or visible damage: stop experimenting and arrange Samsung Support or authorized service.
This order keeps the least destructive actions first and reserves update recovery for the situation Samsung documents. It also avoids treating a hardware failure as something a button combination or software reset can repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I force-restart a Samsung Galaxy that is frozen?
Remove a case that may block the controls. Press and hold the Side/Power and Volume Down buttons together for at least seven seconds, then release when the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears. Samsung Australia phrases the interval as more than seven seconds, so hold slightly longer if needed.
Will a force restart erase my photos, apps, or messages?
Samsung Philippines says, “If performed correctly, a forced restart will not erase any information from the phone.” That assurance applies only to the forced-restart command. A factory reset or a recovery-menu option such as Wipe data does erase personal content and downloaded apps.
My Galaxy shows no charging icon. Is it charging?
Possibly. Samsung says a completely drained battery may not show a charging indicator immediately. Use a Samsung-certified charger and compatible, undamaged cable, keep the phone connected, and try another compatible charger and data cable if the accessories may be faulty. Samsung does not specify one charging time that fits every model.
What should I do when my Samsung phone is stuck on the logo?
Inspect the phone for damage, connect a compatible charger if the battery may be low, and perform the Side/Power plus Volume Down restart. If Android starts far enough, use Safe mode; third-party apps do not run there. Remove a recently installed or updated app if the loop stops in Safe mode, then restart normally.

Can Safe mode fix a Samsung boot loop?
Safe mode is a diagnostic test, not a repair. It prevents third-party apps from running. If the phone is stable in Safe mode, uninstall recently added or updated apps one at a time. If it still loops with third-party apps disabled, continue with software-update and service checks.
When should I use Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery?
Use it when a Samsung software update failed and Smart Switch presents the device for emergency recovery. In Smart Switch, disconnect and restart the program, choose MORE, then Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization, select the affected device, and follow the prompts. Samsung does not describe this as a universal solution for every no-power condition.
What if Smart Switch emergency recovery keeps failing?
Record the emergency recovery code provided by Smart Switch and use the other-computer recovery option in Samsung’s Phone Recovery Guide. Keep the USB connection intact during the process. If recovery fails again, contact Samsung Support rather than trying unofficial firmware files or commands.
Should I factory-reset a Galaxy that will not boot?
Not as a first step. A factory data reset erases personal files and downloaded apps. Try charging, a force restart, Safe mode when available, and the documented update-recovery path first. Select Wipe data or Factory reset only when you accept data loss and have model-specific guidance.
When does a no-boot problem require repair?
Seek Samsung Support or an authorized service center if charging and a force restart do nothing, the phone has a damaged port, cracked display, liquid exposure, swelling, unusual heat, odor, or other physical symptoms, or the device repeatedly fails supported software recovery. A restart cannot repair a failed battery, display, port, or circuitry.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least destructive match for the symptom: force-restart a frozen Galaxy, charge a seemingly dead phone with approved equipment, use Safe mode for app-related boot loops, and reserve Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery for failed updates. Never assume a factory reset preserves data; if charging and supported recovery fail or the phone is damaged, use Samsung Support or an authorized service center.
