How to Restart or Factory-Reset a NETGEAR Router Without Losing Track of Your Settings

If your NETGEAR router is acting up, restart it first: a reboot preserves your WiFi settings. Use a factory reset only when you need to erase its configuration—for example, after supported admin-password recovery fails. A factory reset removes personalized network and admin settings, so you will need to set the router up again.

Choose the right kind of reset

Option Settings impact Use it when What to know
Reboot or power cycle Preserves WiFi settings. You are troubleshooting temporary or basic connectivity trouble. It will not recover a forgotten admin password or erase customized settings. NETGEAR’s reboot instructions describe the available methods.
Admin password recovery Intended to restore access without resetting configuration. You forgot the admin password and recovery is supported and was configured. Requires the router’s serial number and answers to the security questions selected during setup. NETGEAR’s recovery instructions explain the requirements.
Factory reset Deletes personalized settings and returns the router to defaults. Password recovery fails or you need a fresh configuration. You must configure the network again; button location and timing vary by model. NETGEAR’s general reset instructions give its standard procedure.
Restore saved configuration Replaces current settings with a previous configuration. You have a usable router configuration backup file. The router reboots, and devices may need to reconnect if the saved WiFi name or password differs. NETGEAR’s backup and restore guide covers the process.

Restart the router without erasing settings

For a temporary connection problem, start with a reboot. NETGEAR says rebooting preserves WiFi settings. Choose one of these documented methods:

  • Power switch: Turn the router off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it on.
  • No power switch: Unplug the router, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it.
  • App or web interface: NETGEAR also documents reboot options in the Nighthawk app and router web interface; the available controls can differ by model.

Give the router time to restart before checking the connection. If the trouble is specifically that you cannot log in because you forgot the admin password, try password recovery rather than repeatedly rebooting.

Recover a forgotten admin password when supported

Password recovery is available only on supported NETGEAR Orbi and Nighthawk products and depends on the recovery feature having been configured. NETGEAR’s process uses a router login page, the router serial number, and the security answers chosen during initial setup.

  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  1. For a supported Orbi system, use orbilogin.local or orbilogin.com. For a supported Nighthawk router, use routerlogin.net.
  2. Follow NETGEAR’s recovery flow, which may ask you to enter incorrect login credentials three times before prompting for recovery details.
  3. Provide the serial number and answer the previously selected security questions when prompted.

If the feature was not enabled or you cannot answer the questions, NETGEAR says a factory reset may be necessary. Its recovery article also describes a 15-second Reset-button hold as a fallback; do not assume that timing applies to every model. Check your exact model’s instructions before using it. See NETGEAR’s password recovery article.

Back up the configuration before a factory reset

If you can still access the router and want to preserve its current setup, save a configuration file before resetting. NETGEAR’s web-interface path is Advanced > Administration > Backup Settings. On Nighthawk Pro Gaming models, use Settings > Administration > Backup Settings. The backup is saved as a .cfg file. NETGEAR’s guide to backing up or restoring settings explains the steps.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router (RAX36) – Router Only, AX3000 3 Gbps Wireless Speed – Dual-Band Gigabit Internet – Covers 2,000 sq. ft., 25 Devices – Built-in VPN, USB 3.0, Gaming
  • Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
  • Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
  • This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
  • Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
  • Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports

Restoring a saved file replaces the router’s current settings and reboots it. If the restored WiFi name or password is different, devices may need to reconnect. A backup is useful only if the saved configuration is the one you want to reuse; it is not a way to preserve settings while starting from a clean configuration.

Factory-reset the router using model-specific instructions

NETGEAR’s general procedure is to make sure the router is powered on, locate the recessed Reset or Restore Factory Settings button, and hold it with a paper clip or similar object for seven seconds. Release the button and allow the router to reset. Do not force an object into the opening.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 7 Router RS140, Up to 2,250 sq ft, 5 Gbps | Reliable Performance, Easy Set Up, 80 devices, 1× 2.5G + 3× Gigabit Ports, Dual Band, BE5000

  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Seven seconds is a general instruction, not a universal rule. NETGEAR’s password-recovery article gives a 15-second hold as a fallback, while the DGN2000 and DG834Gv5 have no Reset or Restore Factory Settings button: NETGEAR says to hold the Wireless On/Off and WPS buttons together for about six seconds, until the Power LED blinks red. Find the model number on the router label and use the instructions for that exact model if its controls or timing differ.

A factory reset deletes personalized settings, including the WiFi name (SSID), WiFi security settings, and customized admin credentials. NETGEAR describes the result this way: “A factory reset deletes all personalized settings including your user name, password, WiFi network name (SSID), and security settings.” Read NETGEAR’s general reset instructions.

Set up the network again after the reset

  1. Connect to the router’s setup flow and follow the prompts for the exact model. Do not assume the same default login works on every router: NETGEAR says most current models use admin as the username and password as the default password, but newer products require you to change the admin password during first setup.
  2. Set a strong, personal admin password and configure your WiFi name and security settings.
  3. Reconnect phones, computers, smart-home devices, and other clients to the configured WiFi network. If you reuse the previous network name and password, some devices may reconnect automatically, but do not rely on that for every device.
  4. Check for firmware updates using instructions for your router model.
  5. If you had an active NETGEAR Armor or Smart Parental Controls subscription, check its status and reactivate it manually if needed; NETGEAR says an active subscription may need reactivation after a reset.

For business routers, use the business-router instructions for the model and account for saved configuration before resetting. NETGEAR’s business-router reset article recommends backing up the configuration.

If the reset does not work

  • Confirm that the router is powered on and that you are pressing the actual Reset or Restore Factory Settings control, not another nearby button.
  • Check the exact model number and follow its manual or NETGEAR’s model-specific support instructions; legacy models may use a button combination rather than a recessed reset button.
  • Allow the router time to complete its reset before trying setup again.
  • If the procedure still fails, contact NETGEAR Support with the model number and describe the button or LED behavior. Different controls and timing across models make a generic hold time an unreliable diagnosis.
