Diablo 4 does not provide a universal, documented “reset quest” or “abandon seasonal quest” control. If a seasonal objective is stuck, the safest approach is to refresh the quest’s local tracking and your character session before trying anything destructive. Leave the activity, return to town, unpin and repin the quest, relog, verify the seasonal realm and campaign requirements, and only then test a difficulty change. If the marker, NPC, or objective is still missing, treat the problem as a possible server- or patch-side bug and contact Blizzard support rather than deleting the character or repeatedly dropping the quest.
What “reset” and “abandon” mean in a stuck seasonal quest
Players use “reset” to describe several different actions: refreshing a missing map marker, making an NPC appear, restarting an objective, leaving and re-entering an event, or asking the server to clear a quest state. These are not equivalent. Diablo 4’s seasonal progression is stored as part of your character and seasonal realm state, while the journal, map pin, dungeon instance, party state, and login session can each display stale information.

The available player reports do not identify a universal in-game command that safely resets every seasonal quest. One Season 9 player said they could not continue after leaving the game and could not find an option to quit the quest. Another asked Blizzard to reset a quest after its marker disappeared. Those reports support a cautious recovery process, not a guaranteed button or a general abandon procedure.

Safe recovery sequence
1. Leave the dungeon or event and return to a town
Exit the dungeon, cellar, stronghold area, or seasonal event that contains the frozen objective. Travel to a town rather than continuing to fight around the objective marker. A town transition gives the game a clean location change and removes you from an activity instance that may no longer match the quest state shown in the journal.
Do not abandon the character, delete the quest giver, or repeatedly enter and leave the same activity while the objective is still frozen. The evidence does not establish that those actions repair a server-side quest state.
2. Refresh the seasonal quest pin
- Open the quest journal.
- Find the seasonal quest that is stuck or missing from the map.
- Unpin it so its objective is no longer the active map-tracking target.
- Pin the same quest again.
- Close the journal and check the map and objective text.
Unpinning and repinning was specifically suggested in a player report about the missing NPC Bryona in “The Embers Yet Smolder.” This is a tracking refresh, not a reset of completed steps. If the journal itself no longer contains the quest, continue with the session and eligibility checks rather than assuming that repinning can restore a quest that the server has removed.

After changing towns and refreshing the pin, log out to the character-selection screen and sign back in with the same seasonal character. A full relog reloads the character’s quest data and map markers more completely than simply opening and closing the journal.
Use the character-selection screen instead of only closing the game window if possible. Once back in the world, open the journal first, confirm that the seasonal quest is still listed, and then inspect the map. If the objective returns, proceed normally; if it remains absent, record what the journal now says before trying another change.

4. Confirm the character is eligible for the seasonal quest
Check the two progression conditions that a Bryona-related report identified as possible unlock gates:
- Seasonal realm: Make sure the character is on the current seasonal realm, not an Eternal character. Blizzard describes seasonal progression and enduring Eternal progression as separate tracks, so a quest available to a seasonal character should not be expected to appear on an Eternal character.
- Campaign state: Confirm that the campaign has been completed or skipped if the seasonal quest requires that state. A character that has not met the campaign prerequisite can appear to have a missing quest when the content is actually locked.
These checks matter when the quest is missing from the start, when an NPC never appears, or when the character was created recently. They are less likely to explain an objective that was visible and then froze during a session, but verify them before treating the issue as a bug.
5. Test one difficulty change, then relog
If the quest marker is still absent, change the character’s difficulty once, log out, log back in, and inspect the map again. Community reports describe markers returning after a player moved from Torment I back to Hard, and another report said Penitent restored a missing marker. These are individual reports rather than documented mechanics, so they should be treated as a diagnostic test, not a promised fix.
Use a single controlled change. Note the original difficulty, switch to the alternative, relog, and check the marker. If nothing changes, continuing to cycle through difficulties is unlikely to add useful information. Return to the difficulty you normally use and prepare a support report.
6. Stop and report a persistent failure
Contact Blizzard support or submit a bug report when the objective remains frozen, the NPC is absent after the refresh sequence, the quest has disappeared from the journal, or the problem began immediately after a patch. One community report about a patch-related disappearance expected a game fix rather than a local workaround. A support case is also the appropriate route when the game displays an error that refers to party progression while you are playing alone.

Include enough information for the issue to be reproduced:
- The exact seasonal quest name and the objective text.
- Character name or character ID, without sharing account credentials.
- Platform and whether the character is seasonal or Eternal.
- World difficulty at the time of the failure and after any test change.
- The town, dungeon, event, or NPC location where the quest stopped.
- The precise error message, including punctuation.
- Whether you were solo or in a party, and whether other party members had different progression.
- What happened immediately before the failure, such as a disconnect, logout, patch, party change, or leaving the area.
- The recovery steps already attempted and their results.
Screenshots of the journal, map, missing marker, and error text can help support distinguish a display problem from a progression-state problem. Do not include passwords, authentication codes, payment details, or unrelated account information.
How to choose the next action
| Action | What it refreshes | Risk to progress | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the activity and return to town | Location and activity-instance context | Low and reversible | First step when an objective is frozen inside a dungeon or event |
| Unpin and repin the quest | Journal tracking and map pin | Low and reversible | Marker is stale, misplaced, or absent while the quest remains listed |
| Relog to character select | Session-loaded quest and map data | Low and reversible | After changing towns or repinning |
| Verify seasonal realm and campaign state | Eligibility and unlock conditions | None; it is a check | Quest or NPC never appears, or the character’s progression state is uncertain |
| Change difficulty once and relog | Possibly re-evaluates a marker or world-state display | Low, but not a guaranteed fix | Marker remains missing after the basic refresh sequence |
| Support or bug report | Server-side investigation or future fix | None to character progress | Objective, NPC, or quest remains unavailable, especially after a patch |
The sequence moves from local, reversible actions toward actions that require Blizzard’s intervention. None of the listed steps is an established universal server reset.
Known failure patterns and what they indicate
“Taste of Power”: party-progression error while solo
A player reported that “Taste of Power” stopped at “Slay the Demons” and displayed “Cannot progress due to party’s progression,” even though the player was alone. The report said that leaving the area, resetting the game, and changing World Tiers did not resolve the problem.
This pattern is important because it is not necessarily a local party-membership mistake. If you see the same message while solo, capture the exact wording and report it. Repeatedly changing World Tiers is not supported by that report as a solution, so do not spend a long session cycling difficulties after the one controlled test described above.

“In the Name of the Tree”: marker returns after difficulty changes
Reports about “In the Name of the Tree” associated a missing marker with difficulty changes. In one account, moving from Torment I back to Hard and relogging brought the marker back; another said Penitent restored it. Because the reports differ on the successful difficulty, there is no single difficulty that can be recommended as the correct setting.
Use the report as a reason to test one change, not as proof that a particular tier repairs the quest. If the marker returns, continue the objective and note the original and restored difficulties in case the issue recurs.
“The Embers Yet Smolder”: Bryona missing
A player report said Bryona was missing from “The Embers Yet Smolder.” Suggested checks included confirming campaign completion or skip, changing towns, unpinning and repinning the quest, relogging, and allowing the NPC to reload. These actions target eligibility, tracking, location, session, and NPC display separately.
If Bryona is still absent after those checks, the report does not establish a safe way to force the NPC to spawn. Submit the quest name, character details, location, and screenshots instead of deleting or recreating the character.

A separate report described a seasonal quest disappearing after a patch and indicated that a fix was expected. When the disappearance follows an update, local troubleshooting may not be sufficient because the problem can affect the quest definition or progression service rather than one character’s interface.
Best Value
Perform the basic refresh sequence once so you can rule out stale tracking, then check official Blizzard status or support channels for an acknowledgement and attach your own report. Do not assume that waiting, changing difficulty repeatedly, or abandoning the quest will repair a patch-related defect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not delete the character. The available evidence does not show that character deletion repairs a seasonal quest, and it can remove unrelated progress you intended to keep.
- Do not assume an abandon-and-reacquire loop is safe. There is no documented universal abandon procedure in the available reports. Repeatedly dropping a quest may leave you with less information about the original failure without changing server state.
- Do not treat a missing marker as proof that the quest is gone. A marker can be a tracking or difficulty-related display issue, while the journal and server progression remain separate.
- Do not omit the exact error text from a report. “Stuck” is less actionable than the full message, such as “Cannot progress due to party’s progression.”
- Do not keep changing multiple variables at once. If you change town, difficulty, party status, and character at the same time, you cannot tell which condition affected the marker.
A practical decision tree
- The quest is visible and the objective is frozen: leave the activity, return to town, unpin and repin, then relog.
- The quest is visible but the marker or NPC is missing: verify seasonal realm and campaign completion or skip, then perform the town, pin, and relog steps.
- The marker is still missing: test one difficulty change, relog, and check the map once more.
- The game shows a party-progression error while you are solo: record the exact message and report it if the basic refresh does not clear it; the reported “Taste of Power” case persisted through several local attempts.
- The quest vanished after a patch: report it as a possible patch-related issue after one basic refresh; expect that a game-side fix may be required.
- The problem persists in every case: stop experimenting and send Blizzard support the complete diagnostic information listed above.
This approach preserves your character, separates eligibility checks from display refreshes, and gives support a reproducible description if the fault is server-side.
Why there is no safe universal “quit quest” answer
A seasonal quest can depend on campaign completion, seasonal-versus-Eternal character state, party progression, world difficulty, NPC availability, and a patch version. A single abandon button would not tell you which of those states is wrong, and the available reports do not document what such a button would do to a partially completed seasonal chain. That is why the safest answer is procedural: refresh the least destructive state first and escalate when the evidence points beyond the client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommunity workarounds can be useful clues, but they are not guarantees. The difficulty changes reported for “In the Name of the Tree” produced different successful settings, and the “Taste of Power” report remained unresolved after several attempts. Treat every workaround as a bounded test with a clear stopping point.
Bottom line for a stuck seasonal quest
There is no confirmed universal reset or abandon control for Diablo 4 seasonal quests. Return to town, unpin and repin the quest, relog, verify the seasonal realm and campaign requirement, and try one difficulty change followed by another relog. If the objective, marker, NPC, or quest still does not work—or disappeared after a patch—preserve the character and report the exact failure to Blizzard. That is safer than deleting the character or repeatedly abandoning and reacquiring the quest.
