24/7 streaming

How to Restart FFmpeg Automatically for a 24/7 YouTube Stream in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use two separate safeguards: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a temporarily failed network output while FFmpeg is still running, and an operating-system service manager can relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits. Neither can restore a failed media source, power, internet connection, invalid YouTube credentials, or a YouTube-side outage. For a 24/7 stream, configure both layers, then test them and verify the actual feed in YouTube Live Control Room.

Know which failure you are trying to recover from

“Restart FFmpeg” can mean two different things. If FFmpeg remains alive but cannot send its output temporarily, configure output recovery inside FFmpeg. If the FFmpeg process has exited, an external supervisor must start it again. These safeguards are complementary, not interchangeable.

Failure What may help What it cannot fix
Temporary RTMP output interruption while FFmpeg remains alive FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery options A failed source, invalid stream key, or continuing network outage
FFmpeg exits unexpectedly A service manager configured to relaunch the process A broken command, missing input, or other fault that causes every restart to fail
Host reboots A service configured to start at boot Power loss before the host can restart or a host that cannot boot
Local power or internet is lost A UPS may maintain local power briefly, if appropriately sized Internet service failure, YouTube problems, or outages beyond the UPS runtime

The instructions below are general FFmpeg and YouTube guidance; they do not establish India-specific ISP reliability, power-outage statistics, carrier comparisons, or a universal upload-speed requirement.

Prepare the YouTube stream and check your FFmpeg build

  1. Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance.
  2. Check the installed FFmpeg version and options. Online FFmpeg documentation changes as releases evolve. Confirm that the installed binary supports the FIFO muxer and the options you plan to use. Check its local help or documentation before deployment; do not assume online defaults match an older installed build.
  3. Choose an output profile your connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs, bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate, and keyframes. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Use the current bitrate table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than treating a single bitrate as universal.
  4. Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends that total streaming bitrate remain within available upload capacity, with 20% headroom. Include a backup stream’s bitrate when applicable. Measure the actual outbound connection and test under realistic conditions; the recommendation is not an India-specific guarantee. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Configure FFmpeg to retry a temporary output failure

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can continue processing in real time during a temporary network outage while it attempts to recover the output. In the current FFmpeg formats documentation, attempt_recovery is disabled by default, recover_any_error is disabled by default, recovery_wait_time defaults to five seconds, and max_recovery_attempts defaults to unlimited retries when set to zero. Confirm those values and option availability against your installed build: FFmpeg FIFO muxer options.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg’s all-options page includes this illustrative RTMP pattern:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -map 0 -c copy -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 rtmp://DESTINATION

INPUT and rtmp://DESTINATION are placeholders, not ready-to-run YouTube values. Replace them with a valid input and the current YouTube ingest destination, including the stream key as required by your setup. Treat the example as a starting point, not a production-tested configuration: FFmpeg’s RTMP FIFO recovery example.

The example sets a one-second recovery wait and drops packets on FIFO overflow. Those choices affect behavior during an interruption; they are not automatically right for every source or tolerance for packet loss and delay. Review the local documentation, test the resulting stream, and adjust retry and queue behavior for your use case. FIFO recovery only helps while the FFmpeg process itself remains alive.

Use a service manager to relaunch FFmpeg after exit

Configure the service manager for your operating system to start the FFmpeg command at boot and restart it after an unexpected process exit. Set a sensible restart delay and retain logs so you can distinguish a network interruption from a bad input, invalid credentials, or a command that repeatedly fails. Exact service definitions differ across operating systems and service-manager versions; verify the syntax and restart semantics in the documentation for your specific platform rather than copying an unverified generic unit.

Do not treat a service marked “running” as proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream. A supervisor can report that a process exists even if the input is stalled or YouTube is not receiving usable video.

Test recovery before relying on the stream

  1. Check a normal run. Start FFmpeg, confirm that it can read the input and send output, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Review audio and moving video on the watch page.
  2. Test output recovery separately. Simulate a brief output interruption while leaving FFmpeg alive. Confirm its logs show recovery attempts and that output resumes. Do not assume a reconnect occurred just because the process remains active.
  3. Test a process exit. Stop or terminate FFmpeg in a controlled test. Confirm the supervisor relaunches it after the configured delay and records the event in persistent logs.
  4. Test a host reboot. Reboot during a planned test and confirm the service starts at boot, the input is available, and the stream reaches YouTube again.
  5. Verify the viewer-facing result. Check Live Control Room’s stream health and the watch page after each test. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; its live-stream troubleshooting guide also advises checking encoder health and outbound connectivity.

What automation cannot repair

  • Input failure: If the file, device, or source process is unavailable, restarting FFmpeg may only repeat the same failure. Check input paths, permissions, and source availability.
  • Power loss: A powered-off local computer cannot run a supervisor. A UPS can help keep the computer and network equipment powered through a short interruption, depending on their load and the UPS capacity; it does not fix internet or software problems.
  • Internet loss: FIFO retries cannot restore an unavailable connection. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream; check the outbound connection and available bandwidth.
  • Bad credentials or destination: Repeated restarts will not correct an invalid stream key or ingest destination. Recheck the current details in Live Control Room.
  • YouTube-side issues: A local process manager cannot repair a platform outage or a stream configuration issue on YouTube.

Keep a continuous broadcast distinct from an archived event

YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that a single uninterrupted event will continue indefinitely for a 24/7 broadcast. Plan to monitor the event and consult the current live stream settings for latency and Auto-start/Auto-stop behavior. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; verify current settings in your stream configuration because the interface and behavior may change.
