You can make an OBS YouTube stream recover automatically after a power cut, but no single OBS setting does it all. The PC must power on when electricity returns, the operating system must start the streaming session, OBS must launch with the right settings and begin streaming, and YouTube must accept the encoder feed. Configure and test each link in that chain; a UPS can prevent a brief outage from interrupting the stream, but its runtime is limited.
What has to happen for an automatic restart
Recovery after a complete power loss depends on several separate systems working in sequence:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Power and firmware: The computer starts when AC power returns, if its firmware supports that behavior and the setting is enabled.
- Operating system: The PC boots into the user session needed to run OBS and its sources.
- OBS: It opens with the intended profile, scene collection, stream configuration and YouTube stream key, then starts sending audio and video.
- YouTube: The broadcast is configured to let the encoder start it, where applicable.
Any one of these stages can stop recovery. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect addresses a dropped encoder connection while OBS is still running; it does not power on a shut-down computer or relaunch OBS after a full power loss. OBS Studio’s overview guide explains the reconnect setting.
Set up the PC to recover power
Check firmware for AC-restoration startup
Look in your PC or motherboard documentation for a firmware option such as “Restore AC Power Loss,” “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” or a similar label. If available, choose the behavior that suits your setup—often “Power On” or “Last State”—and test it on the actual machine. These choices are not available on every computer, and menu names vary.

For example, ASUS India documents “Power Off,” “Power On,” and “Last State” options on a ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO motherboard. That example does not establish that the same feature or menu exists on other PCs. ASUS also cautions that restoration may not work if power comes back immediately after an interruption, so test your hardware rather than assuming it will behave a particular way.
Decide whether to bridge the outage or recover afterward
A UPS can keep the PC and network equipment running through a short interruption, or provide time for a controlled shutdown. How long it lasts depends on its battery, the connected load and battery condition. If the modem or router loses power, OBS may not be able to reach YouTube even if the PC stays on; use battery-backed outlets for the network equipment too when uninterrupted connectivity is the goal.
If the UPS eventually runs out, the PC still needs to start when utility power returns. APC notes that Back-UPS units return to online operation when adequate utility power returns, but the computer may not restart automatically; a BIOS setting may be needed. See the APC Back-UPS FAQ. There is no defensible UPS capacity recommendation without your equipment’s combined load and the runtime you need.

Configure OBS to start streaming after boot
Prepare the OBS configuration
Before automating launch, open OBS and confirm that it has the intended scene collection, profile, sources, audio devices and YouTube streaming configuration. Check the YouTube server URL and stream key, and confirm the stream produces the video and audio you expect. Keep the stream key private: it allows an encoder to send content to your channel.
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter, which tells OBS to start streaming when it launches. It does not itself make OBS launch after a reboot. You still need an operating-system startup method to launch the correct OBS setup after the PC boots. When OBS is launched through a scheduled or automated method, OBS advises setting the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. See OBS Launch Parameters.
Make the operating system launch the streaming session
Configure your operating system’s startup automation to reach the user session and launch OBS with the intended settings and --startstreaming. The precise procedure depends on the operating system, edition, account policy and how OBS was installed; the available documentation here does not establish one universal Windows or Linux procedure. Follow the documentation for your actual setup and verify that required audio interfaces, sources and network connectivity are ready when OBS opens.

If unattended operation requires automatic sign-in, weigh the convenience against the security risk for that PC and account. A machine that signs in automatically may expose its account and local data to anyone with physical access.

Allow the encoder to start the YouTube broadcast
YouTube’s Live Control Room has Auto-start and Auto-stop controls for encoder streams. Review the settings for the particular broadcast and stream key; an OBS encoder feed and a live viewer-facing broadcast are related but distinct parts of the setup. YouTube’s documentation covers managing live stream settings and creating a live stream with an encoder.
Do not assume every scheduled or existing broadcast behaves identically after a long outage. Check how your specific broadcast is configured to start and end, and test what viewers see if the encoder disappears and later returns.

Test the entire recovery chain
- Check the firmware behavior: With the appropriate precautions, test whether the PC starts after AC power is restored. Avoid interrupting power while files or updates are being written.
- Test a short interruption: If using a UPS, verify that the PC and modem/router remain powered for the interruption you intend to ride through.
- Test a full power loss: Confirm the computer boots, the operating system reaches the required session, and startup automation opens OBS.
- Check OBS output: Verify the expected scene, audio and video are active and OBS is sending to YouTube with the intended stream configuration.
- Check YouTube: In Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream health, then confirm the viewer-facing stream recovers as expected. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.
- Test network loss separately: A brief network interruption while the PC remains on exercises OBS reconnect behavior, not full power-loss recovery. Test both failure cases.
YouTube also describes testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking whether playback rolls over. A backup encoder addresses a different failure mode from getting the local OBS PC to boot after a power cut; it needs its own independent power and connectivity to help during a local outage.
Troubleshoot the point where recovery stops
- The PC stays off after electricity returns: Check the computer or motherboard manual for an AC-restoration firmware setting. Confirm its selected behavior and test it; not every PC supports it.
- The PC starts, but OBS does not: Check that operating-system startup automation runs in the required user session and points to the installed OBS application. A launch parameter cannot replace startup automation.
- OBS opens but does not stream: Confirm the intended profile and scene collection, YouTube service or server URL, stream key and use of
--startstreaming. For automated launches, check that the working directory is the folder containingobs64.exe. - OBS sends, but the YouTube broadcast does not start: Review Auto-start and the relevant broadcast settings in Live Control Room for that stream.
- The PC is on, but the stream cannot reach YouTube: Check whether the modem/router also lost power and whether the internet connection has returned.
- OBS reconnects during a short drop but not after a power cut: Reconnect only helps while OBS is running. Full recovery additionally needs power-on after AC restoration, operating-system startup and OBS launch.
- The viewer page does not recover as expected after a long outage: Check the specific broadcast’s settings and rehearse the sequence; behavior should not be assumed identical across every scheduled or existing stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo avoids relying on a home PC to restart after an outage: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
