YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not guarantee that a radio stream will restart after every disconnection. Recovery depends on what failed: the encoder may need to reconnect, YouTube must still be able to receive its feed, and the broadcast must remain available. Check the YouTube stream settings and your encoder’s reconnect controls, then test the specific failure you need to recover from.
What “automatic restart” depends on
A viewer seeing a stopped stream does not tell you where the failure occurred. The encoder may have lost its connection, YouTube Studio may no longer be receiving the feed, or the broadcast itself may have ended. These states can require different fixes; YouTube’s guidance does not promise that every encoder, network, or power failure will recover on its own.
YouTube describes auto-start and auto-stop as controls that let you start or stop streaming from the encoder when those settings are enabled. They are not a universal reconnect guarantee. YouTube also describes a stream key as the credential that connects an encoder to a stream: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Check the stream settings and encoder
- Identify the failure state. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube Studio to see whether it is still receiving video. Determine whether the broadcast remains available or has ended. Do not infer which state applies from the viewer-facing interruption alone.
- Verify the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Studio’s live stream settings, check that the encoder is using the intended stream key and server URL, and review the auto-start and auto-stop selections. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it unnecessarily. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains choosing YouTube or entering the server URL and key in an encoder.
- Check the encoder’s reconnect option. Find the reconnect setting in the encoder you actually use. Its name and behavior depend on the software or hardware encoder and its version; the available YouTube guidance does not establish one YouTube-side setting that restarts every encoder after an outage.
- If you use OBS, verify the broadcast workflow. Consult the current OBS YouTube streaming guidance and check how the scheduled broadcast and auto-stop behavior apply to your setup. An OBS forum participant reported in 2020 that scheduling a stream resolved one reconnect problem, but that is an individual report, not a general fix. OBS forum report
- Test, rather than assume. Separately test a brief network interruption and stopping and restarting the encoder. Check both what the encoder reports and what viewers see on YouTube. The cited guidance does not specify a guaranteed outage window or recovery time.
If it still does not reconnect
Before changing settings or tools, note the encoder and version, operating system, broadcast type, whether auto-stop is enabled, and whether YouTube Studio shows incoming video after the encoder reconnects. Those details help distinguish an encoder retry problem from a broadcast-state problem. If the broadcast has ended or the encoder is no longer sending a feed, the symptom alone does not establish which one needs restarting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Encoder says disconnected: inspect the encoder’s own reconnect behavior and whether it is still sending to the configured YouTube URL and key.
- Encoder reconnects but Studio shows no incoming video: verify the selected stream key and server URL, and confirm that the encoder is transmitting.
- Studio receives the feed but the broadcast is unavailable: check the broadcast’s current state and auto-stop workflow. YouTube’s settings description does not guarantee that an ended broadcast can always be reused.
What happens to the recording
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is lifecycle information, not a promise that a disconnected stream will reconnect or that an interrupted broadcast will continue as the same event. YouTube encoder setup guide
