To restart a YouTube Live stream after FFmpeg exits, run FFmpeg under a host-level process supervisor that launches it again after an unexpected exit. FFmpeg’s reconnect options may help with certain connection problems while the process is still running, but they cannot restart a process that has terminated.
What needs to restart: FFmpeg or its connection?
A YouTube encoder feed requires a server URL and stream key entered in the encoder. YouTube’s instructions are to start streaming from the encoder after entering those details (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
There are two separate failure layers:
- Connection interruption: FFmpeg is still running, but an input or network connection has failed. Certain FFmpeg protocol options can attempt reconnection for supported HTTP input cases.
- Process exit: FFmpeg has stopped. A separate supervisor on the host must start a new FFmpeg process.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls are stream settings in Live Control Room. They do not relaunch an FFmpeg process that has exited (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
Set up automatic process restart
The general workflow is the same across operating systems, but the configuration depends on the supervisor you choose. The official material cited here does not prescribe or validate a particular service unit, shell loop, container policy, or Windows service configuration, so use the documentation for your chosen supervisor rather than copying an unverified configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Run your known-good FFmpeg command manually. Confirm that the input is available and that the server URL and stream key are correct.
- Confirm the feed reaches YouTube. Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before adding supervision.
- Configure a host-level supervisor. Set it to relaunch FFmpeg after an unexpected exit. Where supported, choose a measured restart delay and a limit on rapid restart attempts so a persistent fault does not create an uncontrolled loop.
- Make the command’s runtime environment available. A supervisor may start the process without the same working directory, environment variables, permissions, or input access as your interactive account. Configure those dependencies for the service.
- Test a real process exit. Deliberately stop FFmpeg during a controlled test, then confirm that the supervisor starts it again and the feed returns in Live Control Room.
- Review the logs and stream status. Confirm why the first process exited, whether the replacement stayed running, and whether YouTube received the recovered feed.
Test the whole path, not just whether a new process appears. YouTube recommends testing an encoder, monitoring stream health, and checking failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting the network (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips).
What FFmpeg reconnect options can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation lists options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and delay or retry controls. These apply to specified HTTP protocol reconnection behavior; they are not a process supervisor and cannot relaunch FFmpeg once it has exited (FFmpeg documentation: HTTP protocol options).

Option availability and exact behavior can vary by installed FFmpeg version. Check the documentation and help output for the version you actually run before adding flags. Do not assume that an HTTP input reconnect option will recover a YouTube output stream or repair a terminated encoder process.
Common restart failures and what to check
- FFmpeg repeatedly exits: A restart policy only starts the command again; it does not fix the underlying cause. Inspect the FFmpeg and supervisor logs for an invalid command, missing input, unavailable file, full disk, persistent network problem, or incorrect permissions.
- The replacement process runs, but YouTube shows no feed: Check that the command still has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoding errors.
- YouTube reports a stream-key startup error: Retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a stream key from Live Control Room when resolving this kind of startup problem (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- The stream is unstable despite FFmpeg staying alive: Check the connection and available upload bandwidth. YouTube advises allowing bandwidth headroom and notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (YouTube live streaming tips; YouTube streaming tips).
- The process restarts too quickly to diagnose: Use the supervisor’s logs and, if it supports them, a restart delay and attempt limit. Tune these to the host and failure mode; there is no universal delay established by YouTube or FFmpeg.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than managing a local FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
