Once Windows has finished updating, reopen your encoder, check its YouTube stream key and scenes, then start the feed and verify the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Whether the same event remains live—or whether interrupted and restarted footage appears as one VOD—is not guaranteed, so check the event and archive rather than assuming they joined seamlessly.
Restore the stream after Windows restarts
- Let Windows finish. Wait until updates and any required restart are complete before opening OBS. Windows may need to restart to finish installing updates. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains restart scheduling and active hours.
- Open OBS and check the scene. Confirm the intended scene collection and profile are selected. Check that the game capture, microphone, desktop audio and overlays are present; watch the audio meters. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing sources and settings before a broadcast.
- Verify the YouTube destination and key. In YouTube Studio, open the event in Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder has the intended stream URL and stream key. The URL routes the feed to YouTube, and the key authorizes it; treat the key like a password. If it is missing or rejected, copy the current key from the event’s stream settings and update OBS. YouTube’s stream-settings guide describes these settings.
- Start the encoder feed. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Then return to Live Control Room and wait for the preview and stream health to show that video is arriving.
- Start the event if YouTube requires it. For a scheduled encoder stream that has not started, check the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room. The exact event state matters: starting the encoder and starting the YouTube event are not always the same action. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Verify the actual broadcast. Confirm the game image, microphone and other audio are reaching the event, and monitor stream health after it begins. Do not rely only on OBS showing that it is connected. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring audio and video during the stream: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Check the recording afterward. When the broadcast is stable or ended, inspect YouTube Studio’s Live content and the channel archive. If enabled, check OBS’s local recording too. Do not assume footage from before and after the reboot was combined into one video.
Choose the right recovery path

OBS lists Configure Automatic Reconnect among its Advanced settings, but reconnecting after a network interruption is different from launching OBS after Windows has rebooted. OBS documents a separate --startstreaming launch parameter and instructions for adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut. Automated launches may also need a working directory; test the whole boot sequence, including whether internet access is ready when OBS starts. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can let an encoder start or stop an event when those options are enabled. They do not guarantee that a particular live event will resume after a reboot. Check the event’s current state before starting the encoder.

Do not count on a Windows restart automatically resuming the same event or joining two broadcast sessions into one VOD. The official YouTube instructions explain connecting an encoder and starting an event, but do not guarantee seamless recovery or stitching. Check the resulting videos in YouTube Studio’s Live content and channel archive.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive as a backup and checking that the local file is growing. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR is separate from the archived VOD: it lets viewers pause, rewind and resume during a live stream. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot when the stream will not return
- OBS reports an invalid or rejected key: Copy the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the key in OBS. Reset it only if needed; YouTube limits key-reset permission to channel owners and managers. Never share or publish the key.
- OBS connects, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: Check the game and audio sources, encoder errors, CPU load and outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder status and local audio/video, CPU and network conditions.
- The game feed is black or missing: Confirm that the correct OBS scene is active and that its capture source targets the game. OBS supports Windows Game Capture for 3D games; test the source before going live using its Quick Start Guide.
- The event appears live but has no usable picture or sound: Use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information to diagnose the feed. Avoid repeatedly creating events or resetting keys before checking the current event and encoder settings.
- You cannot find the recording: Check both the YouTube archive and any local OBS recording. YouTube’s automatic archive is not guaranteed for streams exceeding 12 hours, so a local backup is useful.
Prevent the next update from interrupting a broadcast
Schedule updates outside stream time
Windows may require a restart to finish an update. Microsoft says Windows tries to restart when the device is not in use, and provides restart scheduling and active-hours controls to limit automatic restarts during times you use the PC. Updates cannot be stopped entirely, though pausing is available temporarily. Schedule updates and restarts outside broadcast windows rather than leaving security updates disabled indefinitely. Open the intended OBS profile and scene, verify game and audio sources, and check the YouTube event before the broadcast. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder, previewing the stream, monitoring audio and video, and checking that a local archive is growing. If you use boot-time automation, test what happens when Windows starts before the network is available.

Keep a local recording backup
A local recording gives you another copy if the online archive is missing or incomplete. An external SSD is one possible destination, but the appropriate capacity and connection depend on recording bitrate, session length and the ports available on your PC; no particular drive is required to restore the stream.
