How to Restart a PRISM Live Studio YouTube Stream After a Crash

PRISM Live Studio’s official desktop guidance reviewed here does not document a built-in setting that automatically relaunches the app after a crash. YouTube’s encoder auto-start setting is different: it controls starting or stopping a stream from an encoder; YouTube does not describe it as reopening a crashed PRISM app. If PRISM closes, you may be able to relaunch it yourself, but you must separately confirm that video is sending and that the intended YouTube broadcast is live.

What can and cannot restart automatically

Recovery has three separate stages: PRISM must be running again, its encoder must be sending video again, and YouTube Live Control Room must show the intended broadcast in the expected state. A process relaunch alone does not establish that the encoder reconnected or that YouTube resumed the broadcast.

Action or state What it means What the official guidance establishes
PRISM crash relaunch Reopening the desktop application after it exits unexpectedly. PRISM’s desktop guidance reviewed here does not document a native crash auto-relaunch control. See the PRISM FAQ.
YouTube encoder auto-start/auto-stop Allowing start or stop actions from the encoder. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” It does not say this setting reopens an encoder application after a crash. See Manage live stream settings.
Broadcast verification Checking whether YouTube has the intended stream live after a reconnect or restart. PRISM recommends checking the platform’s status separately after platform-side termination. See Stream May Be Terminated on the Live Platform.

Do not treat “the stream ended” as proof that PRISM crashed. PRISM’s FAQ discusses application crashes separately from streams ending because of an unstable network, a deleted channel, or invalid streaming permission.

What to do after PRISM crashes

  1. Relaunch PRISM manually. Reopen the desktop app using the normal method for your computer. The official material cited here does not establish a supported Windows or macOS watchdog setup, launch arguments, or guaranteed post-crash recovery sequence, so do not assume an operating-system automation recipe is endorsed or will restore a broadcast.
  2. Check that PRISM is actually transmitting. Confirm the app is open and the stream is sending video, rather than assuming that a successful app launch means the encoder reconnected.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room independently. Confirm the intended broadcast’s status and preview. If YouTube does not show it in the expected state, follow the current controls shown in Live Control Room and restart the stream if necessary; do not assume a fresh encoder connection revived the original broadcast.
  4. Confirm the stream key and settings if reconnecting fails. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance covers stream keys and encoder controls. Use the key for the intended broadcast and avoid sharing it: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to that destination.

Reduce the chance of another PRISM crash

PRISM lists external plugins, device or driver problems, graphics hardware or drivers, and insufficient system memory among possible crash causes. Work through the likely causes rather than adding an unverified relaunch mechanism first.

  • Check graphics hardware and drivers. Update graphics drivers and confirm the computer meets PRISM’s current hardware requirements.
  • Free memory. Close unnecessary programs while using PRISM. PRISM’s FAQ states: “If there is not enough system memory, we recommend turning off unnecessary programs while using PRISM Live Studio.”

For current crash guidance, see the PRISM FAQ. Changes to plugins, devices, or drivers can affect other software, so test one change at a time where practical.

If PRISM stays open but YouTube disconnects

A YouTube RTMP interruption is a different problem from an application crash. PRISM identifies “Disconnected from server” error 57995 as a connection-stability issue. Its cited causes include network instability, insufficient upload speed, weak Wi-Fi, and interference from firewall or security software.

When the connection error is 57998

PRISM’s separate desktop article for “Failed to connect to the server” error 57998 describes an IPv6-transition and ISP-infrastructure issue affecting certain users in India and Indonesia. It recommends IPv4 Only and network optimizations for those cases. This is a regional connection workaround, not a universal fix for crashes or a way to relaunch PRISM. Consult PRISM’s error 57998 guidance before changing network settings.
