How to Respond When an AI Chatbot Gives Harmful Advice

If a chatbot gives advice that could affect your health, safety, treatment, or another high-stakes decision, stop before acting. Treat the answer as unverified, check the claim with an authoritative source or qualified professional, and move to live human help immediately if anyone may be in danger.

The clearest evidence and guidance concern health and mental-health use. The same pause-and-verify principle is sensible elsewhere, but legal, financial, employment, and other specialized decisions need advice from professionals in those fields.

Use this response sequence first

Do these steps in order. The order matters because a polished answer can create false reassurance while a real emergency is developing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pause. Do not take medication, stop treatment, attempt a dangerous procedure, confront someone, transfer money, or make another consequential change solely because a chatbot recommended it.
  2. Check for immediate danger. Consider whether anyone could be harmed now, whether self-harm or violence is possible, or whether severe symptoms require urgent care.
  3. Get a live human involved. Use emergency services or a crisis service for urgent danger. Otherwise contact a clinician, pharmacist, therapist, school counselor, government agency, or other appropriately qualified person.
  4. Verify the underlying claim. Check it against a government health agency, major medical organization, peer-reviewed evidence, or a professional who can assess the actual situation.
  5. Limit further disclosure. Do not paste names, addresses, medical records, therapy notes, account numbers, passwords, or other identifying details while you investigate.
  6. Save the relevant exchange safely. Keep the exact wording, date, and suggested action if a professional needs to evaluate it, but remove unnecessary personal information before sharing.

What makes chatbot advice high stakes?

Not every inaccurate answer creates the same risk. A wrong recommendation about a recipe is different from advice to change a prescription, ignore chest pain, disclose a confidential record, or send money. Treat an answer as high stakes when following it could affect a diagnosis, medication, treatment, physical safety, mental-health safety, legal rights, finances, housing, employment, education, or another person’s welfare.

Look for an implied action, not only an explicit command. “You probably do not need urgent care” may delay treatment even though it is phrased as reassurance. “This sounds like anxiety” may cause someone to dismiss a medical emergency. “You should stop your medicine” is plainly actionable, but so is a suggestion to double a dose, combine substances, use someone else’s prescription, or manage a crisis alone.

Personalized language does not make the answer a professional assessment. A model can echo details from a prompt and still misunderstand the timeline, omit a contraindication, or miss information that a clinician would obtain by examination and follow-up questions.

Decide whether this is an emergency

A chatbot cannot reliably determine whether a person is in danger. Make that judgment using the person’s condition and the advice of human responders, not the chatbot’s confidence or reassurance.

Situation What to do Why the chatbot is not enough
Someone has thoughts of harming themselves or another person, an urge to self-harm, or an active plan or access to means Stop the chatbot conversation and seek immediate live help. In the United States, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department. Outside the United States, use your local emergency number or crisis service. Risk can change quickly, and a text model cannot provide physical supervision, emergency dispatch, or a clinical safety assessment.
Someone is hearing or seeing things others do not, or has strong distressing beliefs others do not share Contact emergency or urgent mental-health services now, using local procedures. False reassurance or an instruction to wait could delay treatment.
Severe or rapidly worsening physical symptoms Call emergency services or obtain urgent medical care. Do not wait for the model to refine its answer. The model has no examination, vital signs, complete history, or dependable way to rule out a dangerous condition.
No immediate danger, but the answer affects diagnosis, medication, treatment, or ongoing care Pause the proposed action and speak with a licensed clinician, pharmacist, or care team before changing anything. Health outputs can be false, incomplete, biased, or based on a misunderstanding of the prompt.
A non-urgent answer seems wrong, alarming, or unusually certain Save the claim, seek an authoritative second source, and ask a qualified professional if the decision matters. A fluent explanation and citations do not prove that the conclusion is accurate.

The American Psychological Association (APA) says not to rely on AI in a crisis and identifies thoughts of harming yourself or another person, urges to self-harm, hallucination-like experiences, and strong distressing beliefs as reasons to seek immediate human help. Its June 2026 guide lists 911, 988, and the nearest emergency department for people in the United States. The 988 number is not a global service; readers elsewhere should use local emergency and crisis contacts.

When you are unsure about urgency

Uncertainty is a reason to call a human service, not to ask the chatbot for repeated reassurance. Tell the responder what happened, when it began, what the chatbot advised, and whether there is access to medication, weapons, substances, or other means of harm. If another person is at risk, stay with them when it is safe and follow the responder’s instructions. Do not put yourself in danger while trying to supervise someone else.

How to verify a health or mental-health answer

Verification means checking the claim itself, not asking the same chatbot to sound more certain. A second generated answer can repeat the same error.

Start with the decision the answer would change

Write down the concrete action the chatbot suggested: for example, changing a dose, stopping an antidepressant, combining substances, delaying urgent care, interpreting a symptom as harmless, or treating a crisis as something to manage alone. This exposes the risk and gives a professional a precise question. Note what has already happened, including a dose taken, an appointment missed, or a conversation started because of the advice.

Use sources with authority for that question

  • For symptoms, medicines, interactions, and treatment, use a licensed clinician or pharmacist and authoritative health organizations or government health agencies.
  • For mental-health symptoms, diagnosis, therapy, and safety planning, use a licensed mental-health professional or an established clinical service.
  • For a research claim, look for the original peer-reviewed study and check whether its population, dose, timing, and limitations match the person’s situation.
  • For an urgent concern, call the relevant service rather than spending time comparing web pages.

Check the date and scope of online information. A page about general education is not an individualized treatment plan, and a study about adults may not answer a question about a child, pregnancy, an older person, or someone taking several medicines. If sources disagree, ask a qualified professional to interpret the disagreement rather than selecting the answer that sounds most reassuring.

Ask the professional directly

Tell the clinician what the chatbot said, what action it proposed, and what you have already done. Ask: Is this claim accurate for my situation? What should I do instead? and What warning signs mean I need urgent help? Do not present the generated answer as a diagnosis; present it as an unverified suggestion that needs review.

Check the limits, not just the conclusion

A trustworthy source should identify uncertainty, contraindications, exceptions, and when to seek care. If the chatbot gives a one-size-fits-all answer, omits alternatives, or discourages professional help, treat that as a warning sign. The WHO warned on 18 January 2024 that large multimodal models used for health can produce false, inaccurate, biased, or incomplete information and can harm decisions. WHO Chief Scientist Dr Jeremy Farrar summarized the condition for useful deployment: “Generative AI technologies have the potential to improve health care but only if those who develop, regulate, and use these technologies identify and fully account for the associated risks.”

Mental-health and emotional-support situations

AI may help someone organize questions or find general educational information, but it is not a substitute for licensed care. Do not use a chatbot to diagnose a disorder, decide whether a person is dangerous, select or stop treatment, or provide crisis support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse temporary relief with improvement

A sympathetic exchange can make a person feel calmer without addressing the cause of the distress. The APA guide, issued in June 2026, cautions that “Feeling better does not always mean getting better.” If conversations become the main source of reassurance, replace contact with family, friends, a therapist, or a clinician, or lead to avoidance of care, step back and tell a trusted person.

Recognize escalation patterns

Stop using the chatbot for emotional support and seek human help if use is associated with confusion, worsening distress, isolation, repeated reassurance-seeking, sleep disruption, or following advice that could affect safety, health, or treatment. Dependence can also look like checking the bot repeatedly until it gives the answer you want, hiding the conversations from people who provide care, or postponing an appointment because the bot says the problem is manageable. A person who is in immediate danger should not continue a troubleshooting dialogue with the model.

Bring the transcript to care

If the person already has a therapist, psychiatrist, primary-care clinician, or care team, share the relevant output and explain how it affected a decision or symptom. The clinician can correct misinformation and assess whether the interaction changed risk, medication use, or adherence. Ask whether the clinician wants the full exchange or only a redacted excerpt; sharing less unrelated personal information reduces exposure.

Protect privacy while you investigate

Chatbot services differ in how they store, review, retain, or use conversations. Depending on the service and settings, information may be reviewed by people, used to improve systems, or shared under stated policies. Do not assume that a private-feeling chat is confidential medical care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove identifying details

  • Names, exact dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and workplace or school identifiers
  • Medical-record numbers, insurance details, prescription labels, therapy notes, and photographs that reveal identity
  • Passwords, authentication codes, financial-account information, legal documents, or another person’s confidential information

When asking a professional for help, provide only the details needed to assess the risk. Review the chatbot service’s privacy policy, history controls, deletion options, and training or review settings before uploading anything else. Privacy settings cannot undo information already disclosed. Do not copy a child’s, partner’s, patient’s, or coworker’s private conversation into another system without a legitimate reason and appropriate permission.

Children and teenagers need an adult in the loop

Tell a parent, guardian, school counselor, pediatrician, or another trusted adult when a child or teenager receives frightening, sexual, self-harm-related, medical, or otherwise harmful advice. The adult should check immediate safety, preserve enough of the exchange to explain what happened, and arrange qualified help. If the child is in immediate danger, use emergency or crisis services rather than waiting for a school meeting or platform response.

Watch whether chatbot use is displacing sleep, school, family contact, friendships, meals, or offline activities. Also notice secrecy, escalating time in the chat, repeated reassurance-seeking, or reluctance to speak with trusted people. The Federal Trade Commission announced in September 2025 that it had ordered seven consumer-facing chatbot companies to provide information about how they measure and monitor possible effects on children and teens, communicate risks and data practices, and mitigate harms. The inquiry passed by a 3–0 Commission vote was an information-gathering action, not a finding that any particular company caused a specific injury or violated a law. It does, however, reinforce why an adult should examine both the advice and the service’s data practices.

If you already followed the advice

Act on the real-world risk, not on the chatbot’s explanation.

  1. Stop the harmful action if it is safe to do so. Do not abruptly stop a prescribed medicine without professional direction unless emergency responders tell you to; instead, contact the prescriber, pharmacist, poison service, or emergency service appropriate to the situation.
  2. Record what happened. Note the exact advice, time, dose or amount, symptoms, and any other substances or actions involved.
  3. Contact the right human service. Use emergency care for severe symptoms or danger, a poison-information service for a possible poisoning, and a clinician or pharmacist for medication questions.
  4. Do not wait for the model to reassess you. A follow-up answer cannot examine you, monitor vital signs, or assume responsibility for care.

Be candid with the responder, even if the action feels embarrassing or seems minor. The exact product, amount, timing, and symptoms can change what help is needed. Keep packaging or medication labels available when relevant, but do not upload them to a chatbot merely to obtain another opinion.

How to report or preserve harmful output

Keep a minimal, redacted copy of the exchange if a clinician, guardian, platform safety team, regulator, or investigator needs to understand it. Include the model’s exact wording, the prompt that produced it, the date, and the action it encouraged. Remove unrelated personal data and other people’s information. Preserve the original privately if a qualified investigator needs to confirm that the copy was not altered.

Use the service’s in-app safety or reporting channel when available, especially for advice that encourages self-harm, violence, dangerous medical treatment, exploitation, or disclosure of private information. Describe what the system said and why it created a risk; avoid sending unnecessary medical or identifying details. Reporting does not replace emergency care and should happen only after immediate safety is addressed. You do not need to buy a special device, accessory, manual, or replacement product to respond safely; human help, authoritative information, and appropriate services are the relevant resources.

Why a confident chatbot can still be dangerous

Chatbots generate likely language rather than performing a guaranteed fact check or clinical examination. They can misunderstand an ambiguous description, omit a contraindication, reflect bias in training data, produce a plausible but nonexistent source, or apply general information to the wrong person. A citation, technical vocabulary, or personalized tone may make an error harder to notice. The system may also change its answer when the same question is phrased differently, so consistency is not proof.

The APA puts the practical warning plainly: “AI can sound confident, even when it’s wrong.” Treat confidence as a style feature, not evidence. The higher the potential cost of an error, the more important it is to move from generated text to accountable human judgment. A chatbot’s refusal to acknowledge uncertainty, insistence that professionals are unnecessary, or claim that an emergency can wait should increase caution rather than trust.

Applying the rule outside health care

The pause, privacy, and verification steps also make sense if a chatbot gives advice about law, money, employment, housing, education, relationships, or physical safety. However, the health and crisis instructions above should not be stretched into a complete protocol for those fields.

  • For legal consequences, consult a licensed lawyer or an official government service before signing, filing, admitting, or waiving anything.
  • For investments, debt, taxes, benefits, or transfers, consult a qualified financial or tax professional and verify requirements with the responsible institution.
  • For workplace, school, or relationship safety, involve a trusted person or the appropriate safeguarding, human-resources, counseling, or emergency service.

In every domain, identify the proposed action, stop before an irreversible step, verify with a source accountable for the decision, and avoid exposing confidential data. Do not assume that a medical-style checklist answers a legal or financial question; the right professional and governing rules differ.

A short decision checklist

Use this checklist when you need a fast answer:

  • Could following the advice cause injury, self-harm, violence, medication problems, financial loss, legal exposure, or another serious consequence?
  • Is anyone in immediate danger or showing the APA warning signs?
  • What exact claim or action needs checking?
  • Which qualified person or authoritative organization is responsible for that question?
  • Have you removed identifying and confidential information from anything you will share?
  • Have you told the relevant human professional what the chatbot said and what you did?

If the first two questions point to danger, skip online verification and contact live emergency or crisis help. If not, pause the proposed action, verify it, and keep the chatbot in the role of an untrusted source of suggestions rather than a decision-maker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I ask the chatbot to correct its harmful answer?

You may report the output, but do not rely on a revised answer. Stop the proposed action and verify the underlying claim with an appropriately qualified professional or authoritative source.

What if the chatbot gives health advice that sounds reassuring?

Reassurance is not an examination or diagnosis. If symptoms are severe or worsening, seek urgent care; otherwise ask a clinician or pharmacist before changing treatment or delaying care.

What should I do if someone is suicidal or may hurt another person?

Stop the chatbot conversation and seek immediate live help. In the United States, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department. Elsewhere, use the local emergency number or crisis service.

Is 988 available everywhere?

No. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is U.S.-specific. Readers elsewhere should contact their local emergency number or crisis service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I paste the whole conversation into another AI system for a second opinion?

Avoid doing so, especially when it contains names, medical records, therapy notes, account details, or another person’s private information. Redact the exchange and use a qualified human or authoritative source instead.

What if I already took the chatbot’s advice?

Contact the appropriate human service based on the real-world risk: emergency care for severe symptoms or danger, a poison-information service for possible poisoning, or a prescriber or pharmacist for medication questions. Record the advice, timing, amount, symptoms, and other actions.

What should a parent do if a teenager receives harmful chatbot advice?

Check immediate safety, involve a trusted adult and qualified professional, preserve a redacted copy of the exchange, and watch whether use is displacing sleep, school, family, friendships, or other offline activities.

Do I need to buy a product or special tool to respond safely?

No. The useful steps are pausing, contacting live help when needed, verifying with an authoritative source or professional, protecting privacy, and reporting the output after safety is addressed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Do not treat a chatbot’s confidence as proof. Pause any consequential action, check for immediate danger, contact live emergency or crisis help when needed, verify health claims with a qualified professional, protect sensitive information, and bring the relevant exchange to a trusted human.
