A poor reading is a prompt to check what your indoor air monitor measures and what may have changed—not a diagnosis, a complete picture of your air, or automatically an emergency. Identify the sensor, check the device’s placement and recent activities, then reduce the likely source. Ventilate only when outdoor air and weather make it appropriate; use particle filtration for particle concerns. For carbon monoxide or fire, rely on certified alarms, not a consumer air-quality monitor.
What a poor reading can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer monitors report only the pollutants and environmental conditions their sensors are designed to detect. A PM2.5-only monitor, for example, cannot tell you whether radon or carbon monoxide is present. Even a multi-sensor device is not a complete measure of indoor air.

Colors such as yellow or red, and the alerts attached to them, are not universal health limits. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says there are no widely accepted indoor concentration limits for most pollutants, and manufacturers often set their own consumer-monitor alert thresholds. Low-cost sensor performance also varies; high humidity and temperature can affect readings. EPA says it generally does not evaluate selected sensor technologies under indoor conditions. Treat a change as a clue to investigate, not proof of a specific exposure or health effect. EPA: Low-Cost Air Pollution Monitors and Indoor Air Quality; EPA: Frequent Questions About Air Sensors
A consumer monitor is not a substitute for a certified carbon monoxide (CO) alarm or smoke detector. Use those dedicated alarms for life-safety warnings. CO is colorless and odorless, and high levels can cause serious illness or death. EPA: Low-Cost Air Pollution Monitors and Indoor Air Quality

What to do when the reading turns poor
-
Identify the sensor behind the alert
Check the device display or app and its manual to see whether the alert concerns particles (PM), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), radon, humidity, or another measure. A high reading on one sensor says nothing about pollutants the device does not measure. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for interpreting that specific reading.
-
Check placement and what was happening
Use the manufacturer’s placement guidance and keep airflow into the sensor unobstructed. EPA’s general guidance puts a monitor in the occupant’s breathing zone—roughly 3–6 feet for a typical adult, depending on whether the person is seated or standing. Avoid placing it immediately beside a stove, fireplace, cleaning products, heating or cooling vent, draft, open window, or exterior door, where conditions may skew the reading or make it unrepresentative of the room. AirNow gives similar breathing-height advice for smoke sensors. EPA: Low-Cost Air Pollution Monitors and Indoor Air Quality; AirNow: Where to Place an Air Sensor

Consider recent cooking, cleaning, painting, smoking, combustion-appliance use, or outdoor smoke intrusion. A monitor may help you notice changes associated with an activity, but it cannot by itself prove that activity caused the reading or determine the health risk.

Reduce a plausible source first
When practical, stop or reduce the likely source: stop smoking indoors, pause an activity producing particles, use products as directed, or address a moisture problem. Source control is often the most effective way to improve indoor air. For cooking-related particles, EPA gives using a range hood as an example; opening a window or door may also help when outdoor conditions are suitable. Ventilate only when outdoor air will help
Opening windows or using exhaust ventilation can dilute or remove some indoor pollutants, but bringing in outdoor air is not always beneficial. Check local outdoor air quality and consider pollen, smoke, pollution, temperature, humidity, and safety. Avoid unnecessary outdoor-air intake when wildfire smoke or other pollution is present, pollen is a concern, or weather conditions are unsuitable. Kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors can help when appropriate. EPA: Biological Contaminants and Indoor Air Quality; EPA: Care for Your Air
During wildfire smoke or other outdoor particle pollution, EPA advises setting HVAC or air conditioning to recirculate where possible, using MERV 13 or the most efficient filter the system can accommodate, and airing the home out when outdoor air quality improves. Check that the HVAC equipment can handle the filter; do not install one it cannot accommodate. EPA: Emergencies and Indoor Air Quality

Consider filtration for particle concerns
A portable air cleaner can supplement source control and ventilation when particles are the concern. Choose a unit intended for the room size; EPA’s guide recommends a HEPA-designated unit or a high clean air delivery rate (CADR) for smoke when selecting a cleaner for small particles. A particle filter is not a universal solution for gases, VOCs, or radon, and an air cleaner does not replace controlling the source. Avoid ozone generators in occupied spaces: EPA says they are not safe when people are present, and ozone at concentrations within public-health limits does not effectively remove many biological pollutants. Choose the response for the pollutant
| Reading or concern | Useful next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| PM or smoke particles | Reduce the particle source; ventilate if outdoor air is suitable. For outdoor smoke, recirculate HVAC air and use MERV 13 or the highest-efficiency compatible filter. A room-sized portable cleaner may supplement these steps. | Do not bring in smoke or polluted air just to ventilate. A filter must be compatible with the HVAC system. |
| CO2 | Consider whether more outdoor-air ventilation is appropriate; EPA gives rising classroom CO2 as an example of a possible indication that more ventilation is needed. | CO2 is not the same as carbon monoxide, and a CO2 reading is not a complete measure of indoor air quality. |
| Radon | If a radon monitor reports above EPA’s action level of 4 pCi/L, consider a long-term test or a radon professional. | The action level is from EPA guidance; a general particle reading cannot confirm or rule out radon. |
| CO or possible fire | Use a certified CO alarm or smoke detector for the relevant warning. | Do not rely on a low-cost air-quality monitor as a life-safety alarm. |
EPA’s three broad strategies for indoor air are source control, ventilation, and supplemental filtration or air cleaning. Which one is useful depends on the pollutant and circumstances; a reading alone does not identify the best intervention. EPA: What Can I Do to Improve Indoor Air Quality in My Home?

When to seek a test, professional help, or medical advice
Some readings or persistent concerns call for a pollutant-specific follow-up rather than repeated adjustments to a general-purpose monitor. For a radon reading above EPA’s 4 pCi/L action level, consider a long-term test or contact a radon professional. If a problem persists or the source is unclear, a qualified professional may help identify or address it. If someone has symptoms that may be related to indoor pollution, discuss them with a healthcare provider. EPA: Low-Cost Air Pollution Monitors and Indoor Air Quality
For suspected carbon monoxide or fire, follow the instructions for your certified alarm and local emergency guidance. An indoor air-quality monitor’s reading should not delay action indicated by a dedicated safety alarm.
