Then secure any affected accounts, watch for misuse, and consider credit protections if sensitive identity or financial data was involved. A breach notice does not mean your information has already been used, but acting promptly can reduce the risk. This guide follows U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) consumer guidance.
1. Confirm the notice and identify what was exposed
Read the notice carefully. Look for the organization involved, the information affected, when the incident occurred, what steps the organization recommends, and any deadline to enroll in a service it is offering. Your response depends on the data: an exposed password calls for account changes; exposed Social Security or financial information may also call for credit protections.

Do not use a link or phone number in an unexpected message claiming to help with the breach. Visit the organization’s website by typing its known address yourself, or contact it through a channel you already trust. The FTC’s breach-response guidance directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach, where you can select the types of information involved and get tailored steps.
2. Secure exposed passwords and important accounts
- Change an exposed password promptly. Start with the affected account, then change the password anywhere else you reused it. Give every account a unique password; a password manager can help create and keep track of them, as the FTC explains in its account-protection guidance.
- Secure your email account early. Email often receives password-reset links and account alerts. If it may be affected, update its password and check that its recovery email address and phone number are yours.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for email, banking, credit cards, payment apps, and other sensitive accounts where the service offers it. The FTC describes passcodes, authenticator apps, and physical security keys as options. It calls security keys the strongest method among the methods it compares because they do not use credentials hackers can steal. A key is optional, works only with compatible accounts, and should not replace keeping recovery options current. See the FTC’s two-factor authentication guide.
- Never give a verification code to an unexpected caller or message. If you receive a code you did not request, go directly to the service’s official app or website to check your account rather than replying to the message.
3. Check for financial or identity misuse
Review statements and bills for unfamiliar purchases, withdrawals, new services, or accounts. Check your credit reports for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize, especially if the notice says financial or identity information was exposed. Report unfamiliar charges or accounts promptly to the relevant bank, card issuer, service, or lender using contact details from its official website or your statement.

If you find signs that someone used your identity, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the personalized recovery plan. The FTC’s identity-theft guidance explains what to look for and how to respond.
4. Decide whether to place a credit freeze or fraud alert
If exposed information could be used to open credit in your name, a freeze or fraud alert may help. Both are free under the FTC’s guidance, but they work differently.

A freeze does not affect your credit score. Choose based on your circumstances and whether you are comfortable temporarily lifting a freeze when a lender needs access. Follow the current bureau instructions; the FTC explains the options in its credit-freeze guidance.
5. If an account has been taken over, act on that separately
A breach notice and an active account takeover are different situations. If you see unauthorized activity, changed recovery details, or cannot sign in, use the affected service’s official recovery process. If you can still access the account:

- Change its password to a unique one.
- Sign out of other devices or active sessions, if the service offers that control.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
- Check and correct recovery email and phone details.
If you are locked out, do not rely on a message offering to recover the account. Start from the provider’s known website or app. The FTC provides steps for recovering a hacked email or social media account and advice for responding to a hacked account.

If the organization offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, review the notice and consider enrolling. Check which data and events are covered, how to enroll, and how long the offer lasts; the details can vary by incident. A paid monitoring subscription is not established as necessary by the FTC guidance cited here.

Keep the breach notice and records of calls, reports, disputed transactions, or account changes. Continue checking the affected accounts and statements for unfamiliar activity. If the notice or an official account shows a new risk, revisit the steps for that specific information at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
