If someone is using a deepfake of you, first report it where it appears, then take steps tailored to the harm: intimate imagery, impersonation or fraud, or compromised accounts and identity information. In the U.S., certain nonconsensual intimate images—including qualifying deepfakes—are covered by a removal process under the Take It Down Act. The right route depends on what was used, who is depicted, where it was posted and where you live.
Start with the type of harm
Use the route that matches what is happening. More than one may apply—for example, a fake video may be posted as intimate imagery and also used to extort you.

- Nonconsensual intimate image: Report it to the platform and use the relevant image-removal service below.
- Fake profile, voice or video used to impersonate you: Report the profile or post, warn people who might be targeted, and report suspected fraud.
- Compromised account or misused personal information: Secure affected accounts and use the FTC’s identity-theft recovery service if your information was used for identity theft.
Keep the post’s location and your report details so you can follow up. Avoid unnecessarily forwarding or reposting an intimate image. The FTC advises reporting intimate images directly to the platform: FTC guidance on removing nonconsensual intimate images.
If the deepfake is an intimate image
Report it to the platform
Use the service’s intimate-image, abuse or support reporting route. Include enough information to identify the post and retain the report confirmation or other details that let you track the request. The FTC says to report the image to the platform hosting it.

Use the service for your age group
- If you are an adult depicted: StopNCII.org is a free service that creates and shares a digital fingerprint of an image rather than the image itself. It works with participating platforms; it is not a guarantee that every copy everywhere will be found or removed.
- If the image involves someone under 18: Use the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Take It Down service. Do not upload or circulate the material to seek help.
Know what the U.S. 48-hour rule does—and does not—cover
The U.S. Take It Down Act requires covered platforms to provide a way to request removal of qualifying nonconsensual intimate images, including covered deepfake depictions. After a valid request, a covered platform must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours. If a covered platform fails to do so, the FTC directs people to report the failure at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is not a promise that every deepfake on every service qualifies: the platform and image must fall within the law’s scope, and the clock follows a valid request. The process described here is U.S.-specific.
The FTC also advises victims to report perpetrators to local law enforcement and the FBI. See its guidance on the law and reporting options.

If someone is using your face or voice to scam people
Report the impersonation and warn likely targets
Report the fake account, post or message to the platform. Then contact people who may be approached by the impersonator through a separate channel they already trust. Tell them not to send money or sensitive information in response to an unexpected call or message until they verify the request independently.
Verify suspicious requests independently
Do not rely on caller ID, a number in a suspicious message or a link it contains. Look up the person’s or organization’s contact details yourself and use those to check whether the request is genuine. The FTC warns: “Don’t trust your caller ID. Your caller ID might show the name of a government agency or business, but caller ID can be faked.” — FTC, “Help the FTC fight impersonation scams,” April 2025.

Report suspected fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC said consumers reported losing nearly $3 billion to impersonators in 2024; that figure covers impersonation scams overall, not deepfake-related losses alone. See the FTC’s 2025 report on impersonation scams.
If an account or identity information may be compromised
Secure exposed credentials
- Change the password on any account whose credentials were exposed.
- Change the password on other accounts where you reused it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for those accounts.
If someone used your personal information to commit identity theft, the FTC directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov for reporting and a recovery plan tailored to the situation. If you sent money, contact the payment provider promptly; whether it can be recovered depends on the payment method.

What to expect outside the U.S. or for other deepfakes
The Take It Down Act’s process described above is limited to qualifying intimate depictions on covered platforms in the United States. Platform reporting may still be available for other content, but the guidance cited here does not establish a universal legal remedy for non-intimate deepfakes or reporting pathways for every country. If you are outside the U.S., check your local law and reporting channels as well as the platform’s rules.
