The phrase cannot be made secret again: create a new wallet with a fresh phrase on a separate, trusted device or browser profile, then move any remaining assets if it is safe to do so. Do not send funds to the old wallet to pay fees if an attacker may be sweeping it.
What to do first
- Stop interacting with the fake site. Close it, do not enter the phrase again, and do not use its links, phone numbers, or support contacts. Never disclose the phrase or private keys to anyone claiming to help. MetaMask says legitimate MetaMask websites and dapps do not need your Secret Recovery Phrase; for other wallets, find the provider’s official site independently. MetaMask’s verification guidance explains why phrase entry on a fraudulent site compromises the wallet.
- Set up a fresh wallet in a clean environment. Use a separate browser profile or device and generate a new recovery phrase. Do not restore the wallet using the exposed phrase. If you suspect your Google or Apple account is compromised, avoid using it for the new setup. Store the new phrase securely offline and never enter it on a website.
- Move remaining assets only if it is safe and feasible. Transfer assets from accounts derived from the exposed phrase to the new wallet. A sweeper script may automatically take funds sent to the compromised wallet, so do not add ETH, tokens, or other funds just to pay transaction fees if a sweeper may be active. The exact risk and options depend on the wallet, network, assets, and attacker activity.
- Retire the exposed wallet. After any safe transfers, stop using the old phrase and every account derived from it. Review browser history and scan the device for further compromise, as MetaMask’s incident guidance recommends.
- Keep evidence and report the incident. Save wallet addresses, transaction hashes, timestamps, screenshots, the fake site’s URL, and relevant messages. Contact the wallet provider through an independently verified support route. If stolen assets reach a centralized exchange, contact that exchange promptly with the transaction details; it may investigate, but recovery is not guaranteed.
Create a genuinely new wallet
A replacement wallet must have a newly generated phrase. Importing the exposed phrase into another app or device does not secure the funds: anyone holding that phrase can derive the associated keys. A hardware wallet is one option for generating and protecting a new wallet, provided you follow the manufacturer’s official setup instructions and generate the phrase on the device. It is not a way to recover or protect funds that remain controlled by the exposed phrase. Ledger’s guidance on responding to a compromise also recommends a fresh phrase after exposure.

Phrase theft is different from an approval scam
Entering a seed phrase can give an attacker access to the private keys for accounts derived from it. A token approval or malicious signature is different: it may authorize a contract to move particular assets or perform a specified action. If you only connected a wallet or signed an approval, review the relevant permissions and revoke suspicious ones using a trustworthy, chain-specific tool. Revoking an approval does not make an exposed phrase safe, and both types of attack can happen in the same incident. What recovery can—and cannot—mean
In this situation, “recovery” means containing further loss and moving assets that are still safe to move; it does not mean reversing a completed blockchain transaction. MetaMask says it cannot reverse self-custodial transactions or restore missing funds. An exchange that receives stolen funds may be able to investigate, but neither an exchange contact nor a report guarantees that assets will be returned.

Be wary of anyone who contacts you claiming to be support or a crypto recovery expert, especially if they ask for your phrase, private key, remote access, or an upfront payment. Coinbase’s guidance on technical-support and impersonation scams warns against disclosing credentials or moving funds at an unsolicited person’s request; ethereum.org also warns about fake recovery services. Use official support channels found independently, and never give support staff your phrase or private key.

Reporting options depend on where you live. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s crypto-scam guidance directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and advises contacting the exchange used. In Singapore, the Singapore Police Force’s July 1, 2026 advisory provides local response and reporting guidance. Use the relevant authorities and exchange contacts for your jurisdiction.
