In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, the built-in respecialization route runs through High Factotum Janris Danrok on your flagship. Speak with him and select the respecialization dialogue option. This rebuilds level-up skills and talents for the player character or a companion, but it does not change the character’s Archetype. Each use costs Profit Factor, and the documented sources do not establish a reliable current price schedule.
If you need a deeper reset that starts from level 0, ToyBox documents an optional mod feature for the player and companions. That is separate from the vanilla system and should be checked against the current mod listing and your game version before installation.

What respecialization actually resets
Vanilla respecialization is a rebuild of choices made while leveling. The documented rules specifically cover skills and talents selected during level-up. It is not a complete character-creation reset.

- Currency: Profit Factor, with the cost increasing as you use the service.
The Archetype limitation matters when a build problem comes from the character’s overall progression path. Respecialization can redistribute the choices made inside that path, but it cannot turn a character into a different Archetype. Companions likewise retain their preselected Archetypes.

How to respec in the vanilla game
Step 1: Return to your flagship
The documented in-game route is aboard the flagship. You do not respec from a generic level-up screen or from a companion’s character panel.
Step 2: Find High Factotum Janris Danrok
Speak with High Factotum Janris Danrok. He is the named NPC associated with the standard respecialization service.
Step 3: Choose the respecialization dialogue
Select the dialogue option that offers respecialization. The game then presents the applicable rebuild flow for the character you are changing.

Step 4: Review the cost before confirming
The service consumes Profit Factor. Because the cost rises with use and no dependable current numerical schedule is established here, treat the confirmation screen as the authoritative price for your save. Do not budget from a fixed amount copied from an older guide.
Step 5: Rebuild the level-up choices
Choose replacement skills and talents through the available level-up selections. The reset concerns those choices; it does not reopen the original Archetype decision.
Step 6: Confirm, then inspect the finished build
After confirming, review the character sheet and hotbar before leaving the conversation. Check that the replacement talents, skill ranks and any dependent abilities match your plan. If you are rebuilding a companion, verify the companion’s role in the current party rather than assuming the old setup still fits.

Respeccing companions
Companions use the same named respecialization route: take the companion to High Factotum Janris Danrok aboard the flagship and select the respecialization option. Their level-up skills and talents can be rebuilt, but their preselected Archetypes remain fixed.

- You chose talents for an earlier party composition and now need the companion to fill a different role.
- A companion’s skill investment no longer supports the tasks you routinely assign to them.
- You understand the existing Archetype but want to correct several level-up decisions at once instead of waiting for future levels.
What companion respec cannot do
It cannot convert the companion to a different Archetype. If the desired build requires a different Archetype foundation, vanilla respecialization will not provide that change.
Profit Factor cost and the free-use exception
How the normal cost works
The available guide describes each respec as costing more Profit Factor than the previous one. Profit Factor is the game’s trading currency, so respecializing repeatedly competes with other uses of that resource. The sources do not provide a reliable current price table or formula; use the amount shown in-game for your own save.
Fellowship of the Void discount
Owlcat’s notes state that a Fellowship of the Void vendor discount affects the respec cost. The notes do not establish a universal final price for every player, so the discount should be treated as a modifier to the displayed cost rather than as a guaranteed fixed amount.
Why some saves show a free respecialization
Major mechanical updates sometimes granted an exceptional free use to party members in existing saves. Owlcat’s Rogue Trader 1.1.28 and 1.2.0.25 patch notes describe this as an update-related measure that lasts until the party can access the normal respecialization method. The 1.1.28 notes summarize the reason this way:

That wording describes a one-time accommodation for affected existing saves, not a recurring free respec available to every player. If your save received the ability, use its description and the game’s confirmation screen to determine who is eligible and when it expires.
Vanilla respec versus a deeper modded reset
ToyBox’s community listing documents an option that makes respec start from level 0 for the player character and companions. This changes the depth of the rebuild, but it is not part of the unmodified game.

Choose vanilla when you only need to correct level-up decisions and want the supported in-game route. Consider the modded route only when the standard reset is too shallow for the rebuild you have in mind, and only after checking the mod’s current compatibility notes.
Using the ToyBox option safely
The available documentation establishes the feature, not a universal installation recipe or a compatibility matrix. ToyBox is digital software, and its behavior can change as the game and mod are updated.
Before installing
- Read the live ToyBox listing for the version you intend to use.
- Check whether the listing names your game version and platform.
- Make a separate save before altering a character.
- Decide whether you need a level-0 rebuild or whether the vanilla service already solves the problem.
After enabling the option
Use the mod’s documented controls to select the player or companion and invoke the level-0 respec. Keep the pre-modification save until you have loaded the result, checked the character sheet and confirmed that the party remains usable. If the listing does not explicitly confirm compatibility with your current build, treat the result as unsupported and be prepared to disable the mod and restore the backup.
What the mod does not prove
The existence of a level-0 option does not establish that every Archetype can be replaced, that every platform is supported, or that the feature survives every game update. Those details depend on the current ToyBox release and its compatibility notes.

Planning a respec before spending Profit Factor
Identify the exact problem
Write down whether the issue is a misplaced skill, an incompatible talent sequence or a broader Archetype mismatch. A vanilla respec addresses the first two categories. It cannot solve the third.
Separate must-have choices from experiments
List the skills and talents that define the role you want, then mark optional choices. This prevents spending an increasing amount of Profit Factor to recreate the same uncertainty.
Check party coverage
For a companion, compare the intended rebuild with the rest of the active party. Moving one character’s skills may create a gap elsewhere, even when the individual build is stronger.
Use the confirmation screen as the final check
Prices and available choices are save-dependent and can change with updates. Confirm the displayed cost and the complete selection before committing.
Common questions and failure points
“I cannot find a respec button on the character sheet.”
That is expected for the documented route. Travel to the flagship and speak with High Factotum Janris Danrok; the service is initiated through his dialogue.
“The respec did not change the Archetype.”
That is the intended vanilla limitation. The documented reset changes level-up skills and talents, not the selected Archetype for either the player character or companions.
“The cost is higher than an older guide says.”
Respec costs increase with use, and older articles may describe a different patch or a different number of previous respecializations. Use the amount shown in your current game rather than an inherited price.
“A free respec appeared after an update. Will it come back?”
The official notes describe a one-time free ability tied to major mechanical updates and existing saves. They do not establish a recurring entitlement.
“Can I rebuild a companion to level 1?”
The vanilla documentation establishes a reset of level-up skills and talents, not a level-0 or level-1 character-creation reset. ToyBox separately documents a level-0 option, but its current compatibility must be verified before use.
“The ToyBox option is missing or behaves differently.”
Check the live listing for version and platform support, then test from a backup save. The available documentation does not guarantee behavior across current and future game builds.
A practical decision guide
- Need to correct a few talents or skills? Use Janris Danrok’s vanilla respecialization route.
- Need to rebuild a companion’s level-up choices? Use the same route, remembering that the companion’s Archetype is fixed.
- Need to change the Archetype itself? Vanilla respecialization does not provide that capability.
- Need a reset that begins at level 0? Review ToyBox’s documented option and current compatibility notes before installing it.
- Have an update-granted free ability? Treat it as a one-time update accommodation and use the in-game description to confirm eligibility.
