The safest Sphinx setup in Valor Mortis is a level-20-or-higher boss build centered on the Saber, with Dominatus II and Volatile End equipped. Rest at the Lantern after the Salt Mines mine-cart section, move points into health, endurance, blocking and melee damage, and carry Hand Grenades, Oil Grenades, Special Rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. During the fight, parry the attacks you can read, dodge the unblockables, break posture for a critical attack, then use a Blunderbuss to punish the exposed head in phase two. Add a Cleansing Vial if Stasis buildup is ending attempts before damage does.
Where to respec before the Sphinx
The Sphinx appears in Chapter IV: Dark Descent, in the Caverns, after the Salt Mines and its mine-cart section. A Lantern near the encounter is your preparation point. Lanterns are safe areas where you can level up, change skills and alter your build.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Reach the Lantern immediately before the Sphinx arena.
- Rest and open the character or skills menu.
- Use the respec option to redistribute your attributes. The available guide wording describes the charge as a small fee; no published source gives a numeric cost.
- Upgrade any available skills and equip your weapons, Ambers and quick items before entering the arena.
- Restock at least five Ferrofluid Flasks, then enter only after checking that your firearm ammunition and grenades are filled.
Respeccing is not a one-time commitment. Method’s build guide says skills can be upgraded at any Lantern and that you can respec there at any time for a small fee, so you can change from a general Saber setup to a parry-focused Rapier setup if your first strategy is not working.
The recommended Sphinx loadout
| Slot | Recommended choice | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Level | 20 or higher | Gives enough points and survivability for a boss-oriented setup. |
| Primary weapon | Saber | Reliable melee damage for a player who blocks and parries inconsistently. |
| Boss Ambers | Dominatus II and Volatile End | Converts posture breaks into stronger critical damage and improves damage while a phase-two weak point is visible. |
| Firearm | Blunderbuss | Lets you hit the Sphinx’s exposed head in phase two. |
| Grenades | Hand Grenades and Oil Grenades | Front-loaded damage and burn support during recovery windows. |
| Ammunition | Special Rounds | Extra ranged pressure when melee access is unsafe. |
| Healing and resource item | At least five Ferrofluid Flasks | Provides enough recovery for a learning attempt and repeated phase transitions. |
| Status protection | Cleansing Vial, if needed | Removes or mitigates Stasis buildup when the status meter is causing deaths. |
Dominatus is the key Amber for the first phase. Method describes it as turning posture buildup into a powerful critical hit, with Dominatus II the preferred version. Volatile End matters most after the Sphinx exposes its head: it increases damage while a weak point is visible, so it is less valuable during the opening phase but exceptionally useful once the target changes.

Choose one of three respec plans
Plan A: General Saber build
Use this plan if you are still learning the attack timings or do not land perfect parries consistently. Keep Maximum Health, Maximum Endurance, Blocking and Melee Damage high. The Saber gives you dependable damage after a block, while Dominatus II rewards the posture you build from guarded exchanges.
- Prioritize survivability before niche firearm bonuses.
- Keep enough endurance to block a sequence and still have stamina for a dodge.
- Use heavy attacks only after a missed Sphinx swing or another clear recovery window.
- Do not stand in front of the boss trading hits; the build is forgiving, not invulnerable.
Plan B: Parry-focused Rapier build
Choose the Rapier plan when you can consistently identify the Sphinx’s blockable swipes. Move a firearm-oriented skill point into Parrying Impact, as Method recommends for a parry-focused Rapier user. AllThingsHow reports that a perfect Rapier parry deals 150 posture damage. Against the reported 350-point posture pool, three perfect parries can fill the meter, although those figures are guide data rather than an independently verified developer specification.
- Use Rapier timing to build posture instead of relying on raw melee damage.
- Keep Dominatus II equipped so the resulting break produces a strong critical attack.
- Do not force a parry against the unblockable jump or attacks whose timing you cannot see.
- If a parry misses twice in succession, return to blocking and dodging rather than gambling the attempt.
Plan C: Status-management adjustment
If Stasis or Crystallization is killing you before the Sphinx’s health reaches the second phase, keep the Saber plan but put a Cleansing Vial in your quick items. Continue using Fire Transmutation for damage. Stasis Transmutation can be carried as an optional control tool, but it should not replace the fire setup that consistently exploits the boss’s vulnerable recovery windows.

Method’s level-21 general build gives a practical template for the Lantern respec:
| Skill | Suggested investment | Why it helps here |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Health | 4/4 | Increases the margin for one missed dodge or a partial Stasis mistake. |
| Maximum Endurance | 4/4 | Supports a block, a follow-up attack and an emergency dodge without immediately exhausting stamina. |
| Blocking | 4/4 | Improves the safer answer to the Sphinx’s three-swipe and tail sequences. |
| Melee Damage | 4/4 | Raises the value of every opening while you are building posture. |
| Airborne Aiming | 1/1 | Supports controlled ranged attacks while repositioning. |
| Headshot Damage | 2/4 | Improves firearm punishment of the exposed head in phase two. |
| Ferrofluid Flask Refill | 1/1 | Improves your recovery economy over repeated attempts. |
For the Rapier variant, replace Headshot Damage with Parrying Impact rather than trying to maximize every firearm node. The general template is a starting point, not a mandatory level-21 distribution: preserve health and endurance if you are dying to mistakes, and move points toward parry performance only after your defense is stable.

What the Sphinx’s numbers mean
AllThingsHow’s 2026 guide reports the Sphinx at 2,000 HP with a 350-point posture pool and a 300-damage critical attack. It also reports a five-segment Stasis gauge and says the boss has no Stasis resistance. Treat the HP, posture, critical-damage and Rapier-parry figures as published guide data, not as a developer specification.
The numbers explain the two viable respec paths. A Saber player wins by surviving enough exchanges to fill posture, then taking the critical opening. A Rapier player can reach that opening faster if the reported 150-posture perfect parry value holds in the current version. Neither plan requires you to burn stamina attacking continuously; the encounter is designed around recognizing safe windows.

Phase one: build posture without giving away health
Read the three-swipe and tail strings
The Sphinx’s ordinary claw and tail sequences are the attacks to block or parry. Stay close enough to see the startup rather than backing into the edge of the arena. With the Saber, block the sequence and answer only after the final hit. With the Rapier, attempt the parry on the individual swipe you have practiced; a late parry is worse than a normal block because it exposes you to the rest of the string.
Respect the unblockable jump
The jump is the attack to dodge, not block. When the Sphinx leaves the ground, move clear of the landing area and avoid immediately attacking; the recovery window is safer after you confirm the boss has finished its landing animation. Trying to absorb this hit drains health and can leave you without stamina for the next sequence.
Sidestep the crow projectile
The crow projectile travels along a line. Sidestep it rather than retreating straight back, then return to melee range while the Sphinx is recovering. A lateral dodge preserves your position for the next blockable attack and prevents the projectile from herding you toward the arena wall.

Jump the Stasis shockwave
When the purple Stasis pulse spreads across the ground, jump over it. Do not rely on a normal block for this shockwave. If your Stasis gauge is already high, prioritize clearing the pulse over dealing damage; a missed attack costs less than a crystallization interruption.

Fire Transmutation should be applied after a completed attack string, a missed jump or another recovery animation. Oil Grenades extend the value of a burn window, while Hand Grenades provide a burst when you cannot safely reach the boss. Avoid throwing both grenades into a defensive animation; wait until the Sphinx is committed to recovery so the resources produce damage instead of a harmless impact.
Breaking posture and taking the critical
Watch the posture meter rather than the health bar alone. Continue blocking, parrying and using measured heavy attacks until the meter breaks. Trigger the critical attack as soon as the opening appears. Dominatus II is intended to make this conversion especially damaging, and the reported critical value is 300 damage.
Do not spend the entire posture window swapping equipment or attempting a complicated combo. The reliable sequence is: create the break, perform the critical, apply fire during the recovery, and reset to a defensive distance. If the break occurs while the Sphinx is near a wall or a Stasis pulse is forming, take the guaranteed critical first and postpone grenades until the next safe opening.
Phase two: shoot the exposed head
Recognize the transition
In the second phase, the Sphinx exposes its head as a weak point. Equip the Blunderbuss and use Special Rounds for deliberate head shots. Volatile End increases damage while a weak point is visible, so this is the phase where the Amber pays for the slot it occupies.

Make each shot a confirmed punish
Fire after the boss commits to an attack or finishes a recovery animation. A close, centered Blunderbuss shot is preferable to firing while the head is moving out of view. Keep enough distance to see the next animation, then return to blocking and parrying rather than standing still to reload or chase a second shot.
Sidestep the beam
The phase-two beam is another lateral-dodge check. Sidestep it, keep the Sphinx in view and avoid crossing directly through the boss unless you have a clear recovery window. The goal is to preserve the exposed-head angle without walking into the beam’s line.
Manage the Stasis or Crystallization meter
AllThingsHow reports five Stasis segments. When the meter is high, stop trading damage for position: jump the purple shockwave, avoid lingering in status effects and use a Cleansing Vial if buildup repeatedly interrupts your attempts. Fire remains the main damage status; Stasis Transmutation is optional control, not a reason to abandon the fire-and-headshot plan.
Consumable and ammunition checklist
- Ferrofluid Flasks: carry five or more before entering. This is Method’s recommendation for the encounter.
- Hand Grenades: reserve them for a confirmed recovery or a posture-break sequence.
- Oil Grenades: pair them with Fire Transmutation to extend a burn opportunity.
- Special Rounds: keep enough for phase-two Blunderbuss shots rather than spending every round in phase one.
- Cleansing Vial: add one when Stasis buildup, rather than direct damage, is the reason attempts fail.
Restocking at the Lantern before every serious attempt is more efficient than entering with partial ammunition and trying to compensate with risky melee trades.

Common respec mistakes and fixes
Too much damage, not enough stamina
If you can damage the Sphinx but cannot block a full string and still dodge, move points from offensive or firearm-oriented nodes into Maximum Endurance and Blocking. The encounter supplies damage windows; surviving long enough to reach them is the limiting factor for most first clears.

Parrying every animation
Only the blockable swipes and tail attacks are good parry targets. Dodge the jump, sidestep the crow projectile and jump the Stasis shockwave. A Rapier build is powerful because it is selective, not because every incoming move can be reflected.
Ignoring the weak point
Continuing to swing at the body in phase two wastes Volatile End’s benefit. Switch to the Blunderbuss, wait for the head to be exposed and make ranged attacks the center of your punish routine.
Letting Stasis decide the fight
If the status meter repeatedly reaches its limit, add the Cleansing Vial and change your priorities. Jump every shockwave, leave the affected area and stop attacking during a dangerous buildup. Fire damage and a delayed shot are preferable to a crystallization interruption that ends the attempt.

How to tell which plan is right for you
| Your current problem | Respec choice | Adjustment in the arena |
|---|---|---|
| You die while learning attack timings | General Saber plan | Maximize health, endurance, blocking and melee damage; block more and parry selectively. |
| You can read swipes and want a faster posture break | Parry/Rapier plan | Take Parrying Impact and fish for the reported three perfect-parry break. |
| You reach phase two but die to the status meter | Status-management adjustment | Equip a Cleansing Vial, jump every pulse and stop trading while Stasis is high. |
| You survive but phase two takes too long | Keep either plan and emphasize Volatile End | Use Blunderbuss Special Rounds on the exposed head and keep burn active. |
Preparation sequence for a clean attempt
- At the nearby Lantern, confirm you are level 20 or higher and respec for one of the three plans.
- Upgrade the relevant skills, with health, endurance and blocking taking priority for a first clear.
- Equip Dominatus II and Volatile End.
- Choose the Saber for the forgiving plan or Rapier with Parrying Impact for the practiced parry plan.
- Place Hand Grenades, Oil Grenades, Special Rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks in your inventory.
- Add a Cleansing Vial if previous attempts ended at maximum Stasis buildup.
- Enter phase one focused on posture, not constant damage.
- After the posture break and critical attack, preserve resources for the exposed-head phase.
- In phase two, sidestep the beam, shoot the head with the Blunderbuss and keep burn active without ignoring the Stasis meter.
Reward and what the clear proves
AllThingsHow reports a reward of 20,000 Catalysts for defeating the Sphinx. The clear is primarily a test of controlled defense: the Saber route forgives imperfect timing, while the Rapier route shortens the posture cycle for players who can land perfect parries. The same Lantern-based respec system lets you switch between those approaches without rebuilding the character from scratch.
