Resolve an Xcode project conflict by comparing the common ancestor, your branch, and the incoming branch, then editing a deliberate combined result. Do not blindly accept “ours” or “theirs”: that can remove target membership, build phases, file references, or settings added by the other branch. In Xcode, resolve each conflict and choose the correct side or combination. In Git, edit the unmerged project file, stage it, validate the project, and run git merge --continue (or abort with git merge --abort).
What an Xcode project-file conflict means
An Xcode project is normally a bundle ending in .xcodeproj. Its configuration is stored inside that bundle: older projects commonly use an OpenStep property-list file named project.pbxproj, while newer projects can use Apple’s JSON-based .xcproj configuration. A Git conflict occurs when two branches changed overlapping project data and Git cannot determine which configuration the team intended.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The conflict is not necessarily in the source code. It may involve a file reference, a group or folder, a target’s “Compile Sources” phase, a build setting, a package or framework linkage, signing settings, or another project object. A conflict reported near one line can represent several related UUID-linked objects elsewhere in the file, so resolving only the visible marker is unsafe.
Git can identify incompatible text, but it cannot infer whether both branches’ product changes are required. The reliable method is to inspect all three versions, understand the purpose of each change, construct a valid project configuration, and then have Xcode open and build it.

Apple’s source-control merge guide describes the visual choices available in Xcode: Left, Right, Left Then Right, and Right Then Left. Those buttons perform mechanical edits; they do not decide which target, setting, or reference is correct for your project. See Apple’s Xcode merge documentation.
Protect the work before touching the conflict
- Make sure the working tree state is recorded. If you have unrelated edits, save them in a separate commit or stash before starting the merge.
- Record the operation Git is performing. The commands and completion step differ for a merge, rebase, or cherry-pick.
- Do not delete the conflicted file or regenerate the project as a shortcut. Regeneration can discard deliberate target settings and references.
- Confirm that everyone who will review the resolution uses a compatible Xcode release. A project-format change can itself create a second, avoidable conflict.
1. Identify the unmerged project path and Git operation
Read the repository status
Run these commands from the repository root:
git status
git diff --name-only --diff-filter=U
git ls-files -u
git status tells you whether Git is in the middle of a merge and lists unmerged paths. The second command prints only paths that still have unresolved entries. The index listing shows the stages Git has stored for each unmerged path.
Determine whether the path is project.pbxproj, an .xcproj file, an Xcode workspace file, a scheme, a package manifest, or an ordinary source file. Do not assume that every conflict under an Xcode project directory is the project configuration itself. A workspace or scheme can require a different review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck for more than one conflicted file
Resolve every path reported as unmerged before continuing. A project-file edit may depend on a simultaneous change to a scheme, build configuration, or package declaration. Keeping the project file but leaving a related file unresolved will prevent Git from completing the operation.
2. Inspect the three versions, not just the markers
Understand Git’s three stages
For an unmerged path, Git’s index normally contains:
| Stage | Meaning | How to inspect it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The common ancestor, before either branch’s change | git show :1:path/to/project.pbxproj |
| 2 | Your current HEAD version (“ours” in a merge) |
git show :2:path/to/project.pbxproj |
| 3 | The incoming merge version (“theirs” in a merge) | git show :3:path/to/project.pbxproj |
Replace the example path with the exact path printed by git status. The stage numbers are the key to a three-way comparison: the ancestor shows what each branch changed, while the two tip versions show the competing results.
Compare the branch changes
Use a diff viewer, a configured merge tool, or separate temporary files for the three stages. Useful commands include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
git diff --cc -- path/to/project.pbxproj
git diff HEAD -- path/to/project.pbxproj
git diff --check
The combined diff shows conflict hunks in the context of the merge. Compare each branch with the ancestor to distinguish an intentional change from an unchanged line that merely became adjacent to another edit. If your team uses a graphical merge tool, select the three-way mode so the base, current branch, and incoming branch are visible together.
Make a change inventory
Before editing, write down what each branch intended. Typical entries include:

- a new or removed file reference and its group or folder location;
- target membership and the corresponding “Compile Sources,” “Resources,” “Frameworks,” or copy phases;
- build settings such as deployment target, Swift language mode, module settings, or signing values;
- new targets, configurations, schemes, package products, frameworks, or build rules;
- renames or moves that may appear as a deletion plus an addition; and
- changes to project-level settings that affect every target.
This inventory is more reliable than deciding from the marker’s position. Two branches can both add a file while changing different target memberships, or one branch can rename a reference while the other edits its build phase.
3. Decide the intended combined configuration
Keep one side only when the other change is truly unwanted
If the incoming branch intentionally replaces your setting or removes a file that should no longer exist, keeping one side may be correct. Confirm that the chosen side also contains every unrelated change made by the other branch. A whole-file “ours” or “theirs” replacement is rarely justified for a project file because a single conflict hunk can coexist with valuable edits elsewhere.

git restore --ours -- path/to/project.pbxproj
git restore --theirs -- path/to/project.pbxproj
These commands resolve the entire path to one stage; they do not intelligently merge project objects. Review the resulting diff before staging it.
Combine both sides when both changes are needed
Many project conflicts require a combined result: retain a new source reference from one branch, keep a build-setting change from the other, and ensure the reference appears in the correct target phase. Edit the file so every intended object is present exactly once and obsolete objects are removed.
Project files use identifiers to connect objects. If you preserve a file reference, also verify its build-file entry and target phase. If you preserve a group or folder, verify that its child reference is present. If a target was added, verify its configuration list and build phases. Do not create a second object with a different UUID merely to silence a conflict; duplicate entries can make Xcode show a file twice or build it twice.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Treat conflict markers as syntax errors
Textual conflicts contain markers like these:
<<<<<<< HEAD
current branch content
=======
incoming branch content
>>>>>>> other-branch
Remove all markers and replace the hunk with valid project data. Do not leave explanatory comments inside a property-list or JSON value unless that format supports them. A marker left in a nested object can prevent Xcode from opening the project even when the rest of the file looks correct.
4. Resolve in Xcode’s visual interface
Open the source-control conflict view
With the merge in progress, open the project or workspace in the team’s supported Xcode version and use its source-control conflict workflow to open the conflicted file. Xcode presents the competing revisions and highlights each conflict. The exact surrounding labels can vary by Xcode release, so use the source-control navigator and the conflict entry rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Choose a side or an order for each conflict
For each highlighted region, select:
- Left to keep the left revision;
- Right to keep the right revision;
- Left Then Right when both non-overlapping changes belong in that order; or
- Right Then Left when the reverse order is appropriate.
Read the resulting text and inspect nearby project objects after every choice. “Then” options concatenate content; they are not a semantic merge of UUID relationships. If both revisions add the same reference, combine them once instead of accepting duplicate entries.

Finish Xcode’s merge operation
Xcode enables Merge only after all reported conflicts in that file are resolved. Use the command-line checks below as a second validation, because a visually resolved hunk can still leave an invalid relationship or an unresolved conflict in another path.

5. Resolve manually with Git and an editor
Open the working copy and edit deliberately
Open the conflicted file in an editor that will not reformat or reorder the entire project unnecessarily. Locate every marker, compare the surrounding objects with the three staged versions, and write the intended result. Keep the file’s existing syntax, commas, braces, quoting, and indentation conventions.
For a legacy .pbxproj, preserve the relationships among file references, build-file entries, groups or folders, targets, configurations, and phases. For a JSON .xcproj, preserve valid JSON structure and the corresponding configuration objects. The correct merge depends on what your branches changed; there is no universal “ours” or “theirs” answer.
Use an external merge tool when the hunk is large
A three-way merge tool can make the base and both tips easier to compare, especially when Xcode’s view does not expose enough context. Configure it through Git if desired, but still inspect the final project in Xcode. A tool can merge text; it cannot decide whether a target should include a source file or whether a signing setting is appropriate.
Stage only after the file is coherent
git diff --check
git add path/to/project.pbxproj
git status
git diff --check catches whitespace errors in the working-tree diff. git status should show the path under “Changes to be committed,” not “Unmerged paths.” Repeat the same process for every conflicted file.
6. Validate the merged project before completing Git
Check for markers and review the staged diff
grep -nE '^(<<<<<<<|=======|>>>>>>>)( |$)' path/to/project.pbxproj
git diff --cached -- path/to/project.pbxproj
The marker search should return no lines. Review the staged diff as a project change, not merely as a conflict cleanup. Confirm that every intended file reference, target membership, build phase, configuration, and setting is present once, and that removals are intentional.
Open the project and inspect the navigator
Open the project or workspace in the Xcode version supported by the team. Check that:
- the project loads without a project-file or package-resolution error;
- the Project navigator contains the expected groups, folders, files, targets, and schemes;
- files added by either branch appear in the intended target membership;
- the target’s source, resource, framework, and copy phases contain the expected entries; and
- the merged build settings do not silently revert a deployment, language, signing, or configuration value.
Build and test affected targets
Build every target touched by the conflict and run the tests that exercise changed code or resources. A project can open successfully while a missing build-file entry, duplicate reference, or incorrect target setting fails later during compilation or packaging. If your team uses command-line builds, run the same project or workspace command used in continuous integration so the validation matches the normal workflow.
Resolve related files consistently
If the merge also changed a scheme, workspace, package declaration, or configuration file, validate those files with the project. A project-file resolution that points to a package product or target not present in the related file is incomplete.

7. Complete or abandon the Git operation
Continue after all resolutions are staged
Once every unmerged path is staged and validation is complete, continue the operation:
git merge --continue
Depending on repository configuration, Git may open an editor for the merge commit message or complete the merge directly. If Git reports another conflict, return to the status and three-way inspection steps; do not assume the first pass resolved every path.
Git documents the merge process, conflict inspection, completion, and abort behavior at git-scm.com/docs/git-merge.
Abort when the attempted merge is the wrong operation
If you decide that the merge should not proceed, or the working tree cannot be safely reconstructed, use:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Abort returns the repository to the pre-merge state when Git can do so. Save any unrelated work first; an abort is not a substitute for backing up edits that existed before the merge began.

“Accept current” removes a file from the target
A side can contain the file reference but omit its build-phase entry, or contain the phase entry while the other side added the reference. Compare the complete object chain and restore the reference, build-file entry, and target membership intentionally.
The same file appears twice in Xcode
This usually means both sides added equivalent references or the merge preserved duplicate UUID-linked objects. Remove the unintended duplicate and verify that the surviving reference has the correct path, group or folder, and target membership.
Xcode opens, but a target no longer builds
Inspect “Build Phases,” “Build Settings,” and target membership for the affected target. A syntactically valid project can still omit a source, resource, framework, package product, or required setting. Compare those sections with both branch tips and the ancestor.
Git still reports an unmerged path
Run git status and git ls-files -u. A file is not resolved until it has no stage-1, stage-2, or stage-3 index entries. Edit it again, then run git add on the exact path. Also check for a second conflicted file outside the project bundle.
Best Value
A project-format conversion appears during the merge
Stop and coordinate with the team before accepting a wholesale conversion. A format change can mix structural migration with the feature changes you are trying to merge. Establish which Xcode releases and tools must remain compatible, then perform the conversion as a deliberate, separately reviewed change when possible.
Choosing a conflict-resolution workflow
| Choice | Strength | Risk or trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xcode visual interface | Shows conflict regions in the IDE and offers Left, Right, Left Then Right, and Right Then Left. | Choices are mechanical; relationships among project objects still require manual review. | Developers who want an IDE workflow and can validate the resulting project. |
| Command line or three-way merge tool | Exposes the ancestor, current branch, and incoming branch and works consistently with Git’s index. | Requires careful editing of project syntax and object relationships. | Teams comfortable auditing diffs or handling large conflict hunks. |
Keep the legacy .pbxproj |
Maintains compatibility with existing Xcode releases and tooling. | Textual edits can overlap and produce difficult UUID-linked conflicts. | Teams with mixed or older Xcode versions. |
Adopt JSON .xcproj |
Apple says isolated configuration changes can make conflicts less likely and the format can be easier to review. | Requires Xcode 27 or later compatibility and agreement across the team and its tools. | Teams that can standardize on compatible releases. |
| Group-based organization | Matches traditional Xcode project organization. | Adding or removing files can modify the project representation and create churn. | Existing projects whose tooling depends on groups. |
| Folder-based organization | Adding or removing files from folders does not modify the project file in the same way as groups, reducing one source of churn. | It does not prevent conflicts in shared settings or other project objects. | Teams seeking fewer project-file edits for file additions and removals. |
Should you mark .pbxproj as binary?
The Pro Git book gives an optional *.pbxproj binary example in its discussion of Git attributes. Marking the file as binary disables normal text diffs and line-ending conversion for that path; it does not understand Xcode objects or combine two project edits.
That setting can prevent Git from attempting an automatic textual merge, but it also removes the line-by-line visibility that helps reviewers understand project changes. It is therefore a policy choice, not a fix. If your team marks the file binary, you still need a deliberate external or Xcode-based comparison and a review of the final project. Read the trade-offs in Pro Git’s Git attributes documentation before changing repository attributes.
Reduce future Xcode project conflicts
Use folder-based organization where it fits
Apple documents folder-based project organization as a way to keep the project-file representation smaller. Adding or removing files from folders can avoid the same project-file edits produced by traditional groups. This reduces one source of conflict, but shared build settings, target membership, phases, and other configuration can still overlap. See Apple’s folder guidance.
Evaluate the JSON project format as a team decision
Apple’s format documentation states that Xcode 27 and later support a JSON .xcproj configuration and identifies Xcode 27.2 and later as using JSON by default. The format is compatible with Xcode 27 and later, so confirm the minimum Xcode version for every contributor, build agent, script, and integration before converting. Apple describes the benefit this way: “Additionally, merge conflicts are less likely because the JSON file format isolates configuration changes.” That is a likelihood, not a guarantee or a measured conflict-reduction percentage.
Use Apple’s current instructions at Updating your Xcode project configuration file format. Treat conversion as a planned migration with a dedicated review, not as a repair for an unresolved merge.
Keep project-only edits focused
Separate unrelated project reorganization from feature work when practical. Smaller commits make the three-way comparison clearer and let reviewers identify whether a conflict concerns a target, a file reference, or a broad formatting change. Agree on who owns shared build settings and communicate target-membership changes in the pull request or merge description.

A concise resolution checklist
- Run
git statusand list every unmerged path. - Identify whether the conflict is in
.pbxproj,.xcproj, a workspace, a scheme, or another file. - Inspect stages 1, 2, and 3 with
git showand compare each branch with the common ancestor. - Inventory file references, groups or folders, target membership, build phases, targets, configurations, and settings changed by either branch.
- Resolve each hunk in Xcode or an editor; combine both changes where both are intended.
- Remove every conflict marker and preserve valid project syntax and UUID relationships.
- Run
git diff --check, review the staged diff, and confirm no unmerged index entries remain. - Open the project in the supported Xcode version, inspect affected targets, build them, and run relevant tests.
- Stage each resolved path with
git add, then rungit merge --continue. - If the merge itself should be abandoned, use
git merge --abortinstead.
The Bottom Line
The safe resolution is the one that preserves the intended configuration from both branches, not whichever side Git labels as current or incoming. Use the common ancestor to understand the changes, validate the resulting project in Xcode, and only then complete the Git merge.
