To resize an image, first find the pixel dimensions required by its destination, then change the width and height while preserving the aspect ratio unless you intend to crop or stretch the picture. Save the resized version as a separate copy. Resampling changes pixel data, so enlarging a small image cannot guarantee that it will retain its original quality.
Choose the right kind of size before resizing
For a website, social post, or upload, start with the destination’s stated pixel-width, pixel-height, or file-size limit. Requirements vary, so there is no single dimension that suits every service. If the destination specifies a frame with a different shape from your image, decide whether to leave space around the image, crop part of it, or stretch it.

Pixel dimensions and aspect ratio
Pixel dimensions are an image’s width and height in pixels. They describe the image data available for display and, together with print resolution, affect its physical print size. Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. Keeping it locked prevents unintended stretching; when a target frame has a different ratio, the entire image can fit with empty space, the image can fill the frame by cropping, or the image can be stretched. Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation names these approaches Fit, Fill, and Stretch.

Print size and resolution
Print resolution, usually expressed in pixels per inch (PPI), is not the same as pixel dimensions. Adobe’s Photoshop guide, updated February 23, 2026, gives 72–96 PPI as typical screen/web guidance and 300 PPI for print quality; these are general recommendations, not universal requirements. Follow the receiving service’s pixel specifications or the printer’s actual requirements when available. Changing resolution without resampling changes the physical print size represented by the existing pixels; it does not add image detail. Resize on a Mac with Preview
- Open the image in Preview and choose Tools > Adjust Size.
- Enter the target width and height, or choose a fit size. Keep Scale proportionally enabled to retain the image’s aspect ratio.
- Consider the Resample image control. Resampling changes pixel information. Apple documents reducing dimensions without losing detail when resampling is deselected; that describes the effect on the pixel data, not a general promise that every resized image will look unchanged.
- Save the resized result as a separate file so the original remains available.
To resize several images together, open them in the same Preview window, select the images in the sidebar, and choose Tools > Adjust Size. Apple’s Preview guide documents this multi-image workflow.
Resize a batch in Windows with PowerToys
- Install Microsoft PowerToys, then select one or more images in File Explorer.
- Right-click the selection and choose Resize with Image Resizer.
- Choose a size preset or enter dimensions. Presets can use pixels, percentages, inches, or centimeters. Leaving one dimension empty lets the tool calculate it proportionally.
- Choose the sizing behavior deliberately: Fit keeps the whole picture without cropping; Fill scales proportionally and crops as needed; Stretch fills the requested dimensions but changes the picture’s proportions.
- Save the resized output separately from the originals.

Use Photoshop for precise pixel or print controls
- Choose Image > Image Size.
- Enter the desired dimensions and units. Keep the constrain-aspect-ratio control enabled if you want proportional scaling.
- Set resolution when the physical print size is part of the goal. Use the printer’s specification where available rather than treating a general PPI recommendation as a rule for every job.
- Use Resample when you need the pixel count to change. Resampling adds or removes pixel information and can affect image quality, especially when enlarging a small source.
- Save a separate resized copy.

Protect quality and avoid common mistakes
- Do not enlarge a small image expecting new detail. Resampling can create additional pixels, but it does not recover detail that was not captured in the original.
- Check the aspect ratio before entering both dimensions. If the ratio changes, confirm whether the tool will add space, crop, or distort the image.
- Keep an untouched original. Export a resized copy so you can return to the source if you need another size or crop.
- Do not assume the file will always get smaller. File size also depends on format, image content, and encoding settings, not only pixel dimensions.
- Use print controls only when print output matters. For online use, the destination’s pixel requirements are more useful than changing a PPI number alone.
