Make a separate sequence for the destination placement, set its required aspect ratio and dimensions, then reframe the source so the product, people, text and action stay visible from start to finish. Automatic reframing is a useful first pass, not a final check: watch the entire edit, correct the framing with manual controls and keyframes, keep critical information inside the placement’s current safe zone, and inspect the exported file in the platform’s own preview before publishing.
Start with the exact placement, not a generic “vertical” preset
Vertical is an orientation, not one universal delivery specification. A full-screen placement, an in-feed auction ad and a format with interactive add-ons can reserve different amounts of screen space for captions, buttons and other interface elements. Identify the platform, paid placement, campaign type and any add-on before you change the edit.

Use the destination’s current technical page and download its matching safe-zone template. Requirements can change, and the same platform may publish separate rules for different ad products. The figures below are documented recommendations for specific placements, not guarantees that every vertical placement accepts the same file.
| Destination or guidance | Recommended vertical shape | Resolution or quality guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads recommended 1080p vertical output | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Google also lists 16:9 at 1920 × 1080 and 1:1 at 1080 × 1080; 4:5 is among the accepted alternatives. These are Google Ads specifications, not universal rules. |
| TikTok Auction In-Feed Ads | 9:16 | 540 × 960 pixels or higher | The specification page was marked last updated June 2026. Horizontal 16:9 and square 1:1 are also listed for that ad product. |
| TikTok for Business creative guidance | 9:16 | At least 720p | TikTok describes this as a starting point, asks advertisers to stay within the UI safe zone and recommends testing because campaign results vary. |
Do not infer that the larger Google canvas is required for the TikTok placement, or that a file meeting TikTok’s minimum is automatically the preferred Google export. Create a version for each destination when their requirements differ.

Resizing and reframing solve different problems
Resizing changes the canvas
Resizing, in this context, means creating a sequence with new frame dimensions and aspect ratio. A source shot in a wide format has a different canvas from a 9:16 sequence. The new sequence defines the output frame that the platform receives.
Reframing chooses what appears inside it
Reframing decides which portion of the original picture is visible inside that new canvas. A narrow vertical crop can remove people, products, logos or text that were safely inside the sides of the original wide shot. Scaling the entire image down may preserve everything, but it can leave large empty areas and make important details too small. Reframing is the editorial choice between those outcomes.
Treat the two operations as a pair: set the destination canvas first, then decide how the image should move within it. Changing dimensions without inspecting the crop is how key content disappears.

A short inventory prevents expensive fixes after the sequence is built. Record the following for every source clip:
- The main subject: a speaker’s face, a product, a demonstration, or more than one focal point.
- Text already embedded in the footage, including legal copy, prices, labels and end cards.
- Logos and brand marks that must remain visible.
- Movement across the frame, such as a person walking, a hand entering from the side or a product being passed between people.
- The moments when the call to action appears and the amount of time viewers have to read it.
- Shots that cannot tolerate a tight crop, such as a two-person conversation or a wide before-and-after comparison.
Mark clips with several simultaneous subjects. They may need a wider crop, a cut to a different angle or a deliberate layout rather than one continuously centered subject.

A reliable resize-and-reframe workflow
1. Name the delivery version
Create a duplicate of the approved edit instead of changing the master sequence. Include the platform, placement, ratio and date in the sequence name. This keeps the original timing and framing available if another placement needs a different crop.
2. Check the current specification and safe-zone file
Open the requirements for the exact campaign and download its safe-zone template. Note whether the template changes with caption length, interactive add-ons, dimensions or the selected ad format. Keep that information with the project rather than relying on a remembered percentage.
3. Set the target sequence
Choose the ratio and dimensions specified for the destination. A common full-height vertical canvas is 9:16, but the placement’s current requirement takes precedence. Preserve the duplicate’s edit points, audio and graphics while changing only the destination canvas and framing.
4. Apply automatic reframing as a draft
In Adobe Premiere Pro, select Auto Reframe Sequence and choose the target aspect ratio. Auto Reframe can be applied to a full sequence or to individual clips and is intended to follow a subject as the shot changes. Adobe’s current help and tutorial documentation describe refining the result with position, scale, rotation and keyframes.
Let the first pass finish, then treat it as an editable proposal. Tracking can choose the wrong person in a group, favor a moving hand over the product or drift toward a high-contrast background. No automatic pass can understand every legal line, logo or call to action in the way an editor can.

5. Watch the whole cut at normal speed
Do not judge the crop from a still frame at the beginning. Play every shot, including transitions, punch-ins, title cards and the final call to action. Check whether the subject leaves the frame, whether a cut changes the visual center abruptly and whether the crop reveals or hides information at any point.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
6. Correct position, scale and rotation
Use the clip’s motion controls to place the focal point inside the new frame. Adjust scale only as far as necessary: excessive enlargement softens detail and can remove context. A slight rotation correction can keep a tilted product or horizon visually stable, but avoid rotating text or legal copy into an uncomfortable reading angle.
7. Add keyframes where the story changes
When a subject moves, set keyframes before the movement, during the change and after the subject settles. Ease the motion so the crop follows naturally rather than snapping at each edit point. Add a new keyframe when the focal point changes from a face to a product or from a demonstration to an end card. Review the timing at normal playback; a mathematically smooth move can still distract viewers if it accelerates during an important word.
8. Protect text and graphics
Place essential logos, product details, captions, prices, disclaimers and calls to action inside the destination’s safe zone. If a source graphic is too wide, rebuild it for the vertical composition instead of shrinking it until it is unreadable. Keep each line on screen long enough to read, and check that a crop does not split a word, number or legal sentence.
9. Preview with the platform interface
Upload a draft or use the platform’s preview tool. Inspect the ad with the real caption length, buttons, add-ons and device presentation. A graphic that looks clear in the editing application can be covered by a caption or control in the placement. Repeat the preview for any materially different caption or interactive configuration.

10. Export and verify the exported file
Export at the destination’s specified dimensions and quality. Open that exported file, not only the timeline, and watch it from beginning to end. Confirm that the file has the intended ratio, that text remains legible after encoding and that the final frame contains the correct call to action. Then review it once more in the destination preview before launch.
How to keep key content visible in moving shots
Follow the subject, not the center of the original frame
A center crop works only when the important subject stays centered. For a speaker who turns toward a product, begin with the face, then animate the crop toward the product as the narration or action changes. For a person walking across the frame, leave visual space in the direction of travel so the next movement does not push the face against the edge.
Handle multiple subjects deliberately
When two people must remain visible, a tight single-subject crop is the wrong solution. Try a wider scale, a cut to a closer shot that contains both people, or an intentionally designed split or stacked composition. If one person is only incidental, decide which subject carries the message and frame accordingly rather than allowing the tracker to switch unpredictably.
Separate action from explanatory text
Demonstrations often place the hands or product low in the frame while instructions sit near the top. A vertical crop may force a choice between them. Consider cutting to two shorter shots, moving the text into a rebuilt vertical graphic or pausing the action long enough for the instruction to appear in a clear area. Do not cover a hand movement with a caption merely to preserve the original layout.
Rebuild end cards when necessary
Wide end cards rarely survive a narrow crop without compromise. Create a vertical end card with a clear hierarchy: product or logo, one concise benefit, required legal text and the call to action. Keep the elements within the placement safe zone and test the card in the platform preview, where buttons may occupy the lower or side areas.
Best Value
Safe zones are placement-specific, not a universal percentage
Interface overlays, calls to action and buttons can occupy different areas depending on the ad format, campaign and screen. Google Ads supplies safe-zone references and notes that overlays vary by format, campaign type and screen. TikTok states that its safe-zone size changes with dimensions, caption length and interactive add-ons, provides downloadable safe-zone files and recommends its preview tool.
Therefore, avoid rules such as “keep everything inside the top 80 percent.” That shortcut can be wrong for a different caption, add-on or device presentation. Use the template that matches the placement and leave nonessential decoration outside the protected area first. Keep anything whose absence changes the meaning—product identity, offer terms, required disclosure or action—in the protected region.
Text, logos and legal copy in a vertical composition
- Prioritize meaning: product name, offer, required disclosure and call to action outrank decorative badges.
- Design for the narrow width: break long headlines into readable lines rather than reducing type until it is technically inside the frame.
- Maintain contrast: a crop can place text over a different part of the image, so recheck contrast after every reframing move.
- Keep terms together: do not let a crop or overlay separate a percentage from its qualifier, a price from its currency or a disclosure from the claim it qualifies.
- Check duration: a vertical viewer may need to read several lines while also watching motion; hold the graphic long enough for the complete message.
Burned-in text in the original footage cannot be moved independently. If it lands outside the safe zone, the choices are to reframe the shot, cover and replace it with an approved graphic, or cut to a version where the text was designed for the vertical canvas.

Choosing an editing approach
| Approach | Best use | Strength | Risk and required check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual reframing | Short edits with a few controlled shots or complex legal graphics | Maximum editorial control over every crop | Time increases with movement; inspect all motion and transitions. |
| Automatic reframing followed by review | Longer edits or many clips that need a fast first pass | Provides an initial subject-tracking layout | The tracker can select the wrong focal point or miss text; correct position, scale, rotation and keyframes manually. |
| Hybrid redesign | Ads combining demonstrations, interviews, wide end cards and dense copy | Uses reframing where it works and rebuilt graphics or alternate cuts where it does not | Requires a clear version plan so typography, timing and legal copy stay consistent. |
No documented benchmark establishes that one workflow delivers better campaign performance. The practical comparison is control versus preparation time: automatic tools accelerate setup, while manual inspection determines whether the message survives.
Quality-control checklist before upload
Use this checklist on the rendered file and again in the destination preview:
- The file uses the ratio and dimensions required by the selected placement.
- Every face, product, logo and essential action remains visible throughout its shot.
- Auto Reframe did not switch to an incidental person, hand or background object.
- Keyframes do not create jumps, accidental zooms or distracting oscillation.
- Captions, legal text and calls to action are readable and inside the matching safe zone.
- Interactive overlays do not cover an offer, disclosure, logo or button instruction.
- Text has enough contrast and screen time at the new crop.
- Transitions, title cards and the final frame have been checked at normal playback.
- The exported file, rather than only the editing timeline, has been reviewed.
- The platform preview has been checked with the actual caption and add-ons planned for launch.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| A face is cut off during a turn | The automatic crop follows the initial position but not the later movement. | Add keyframes before and during the turn, reduce scale slightly if needed, and watch the entire shot again. |
| The product disappears when a person enters | The tracker switches to the nearer or more visually prominent subject. | Choose the message’s primary subject, keyframe the crop through the entrance, or cut to a shot containing both. |
| The call to action is covered in preview | The placement’s interface overlay or add-on occupies that area. | Move the call to action into the current template’s safe zone and verify it with the exact caption and add-on settings. |
| Legal text is technically present but unreadable | The wide graphic was merely scaled or cropped for the narrow canvas. | Rebuild the graphic for vertical width, increase hold time where permitted and check the rendered file. |
| The crop feels jerky | Position keyframes are too sparse, too abrupt or placed on the wrong beats. | Add intermediate keyframes, smooth the movement and align major changes with cuts or intentional action. |
| Important side content is missing in every crop | The source shot contains more simultaneous information than the target canvas can show. | Use a wider scale if legibility permits, choose an alternate shot, redesign the layout or edit the scene into separate moments. |
| The file passes the editor but fails the placement preview | The exported dimensions or the interface treatment differs from the editing view. | Confirm the export settings against the current placement requirements and inspect the exported file in the platform preview. |
Managing versions without losing the master
Keep the original sequence untouched and create one clearly named vertical version per materially different placement. Store the downloaded safe-zone template and the date of the specification check with the project. If a platform changes its dimensions or interface, you can update the affected version without disturbing other aspect ratios.
When the same campaign uses different captions or interactive add-ons, treat those as separate preview checks even if the video file is identical. The available safe area can change, so approval of one presentation does not automatically approve another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the current guidance does—and does not—prove
The documented sources establish technical recommendations, safe-zone behavior and an editing workflow; they do not provide a named performance statistic showing that reframing alone improves results. A correctly framed ad can prevent avoidable loss of information, but campaign outcomes still depend on the creative, audience, offer and testing plan. Use the platform recommendations as a starting point, then validate the actual presentation in preview before publication.
