There is no universal wallpaper size: the intended monitor, desktop area, or combined multi-monitor layout is the project target.
Use crop-to-fill when the image must cover every pixel, fit-and-pad when every part of the artwork must remain visible, or stretch only when changing the artwork’s proportions is acceptable. ImageMagick can perform these operations from the command line, while GNOME and KDE Plasma let you inspect the final result with their own wallpaper rendering options.

1. Identify the exact wallpaper canvas
Start with the place where the image will actually appear. Check the display resolution and orientation in your Linux display settings, then record the width and height in pixels. A landscape monitor, portrait monitor, laptop panel, and a desktop spanning several screens each produce a different target canvas.

For one monitor, use its active pixel dimensions as the export target. If the panel is 2560 pixels wide and 1440 pixels high, the working canvas is 2560×1440. Do not substitute a familiar size simply because it is common online; the consulted GNOME and ImageMagick documentation support a fixed-canvas workflow, not a universal wallpaper standard.

Portrait or rotated displays
Use the orientation in which the desktop is currently running. A rotated panel may be taller than it is wide, so prepare the composition for that shape rather than exporting a landscape image and relying on automatic rotation.
Multiple displays
Decide whether the artwork should be independent on each monitor or treated as one combined desktop. For a combined design, establish the intended arrangement and total canvas before exporting. GNOME includes a spanned rendering choice, but the cited documentation does not define every multi-monitor geometry edge case, such as gaps, mixed resolutions, or different monitor scaling factors. Inspect the result on the actual arrangement instead of assuming that a mathematically combined image will align perfectly.
2. Measure the aspect-ratio difference
Calculate the target ratio from width divided by height and compare it with the artwork’s ratio. If they differ, a proportional resize cannot both fill the target rectangle and retain every edge. Choose the compromise before exporting so that important subjects, text, and logos are not removed unexpectedly.

Crop to fill
Crop-to-fill keeps the composition edge-to-edge. Use a focal point to decide which side loses pixels: a centered subject may work with a centered crop, while a subject near the left or right edge may require a different gravity or alignment. ImageMagick documents ratio-based resize geometry together with gravity controls for positioning this crop.
Fit and pad
Fit-and-pad protects the complete composition. Choose a background color that belongs in the artwork or that makes the unused area unobtrusive. ImageMagick’s fixed-canvas example fits an image, centers it on a black canvas, and extends the result to the requested dimensions.
Stretch
GNOME lists stretched as a wallpaper rendering mode. Treat that as a presentation choice rather than a requirement to distort the exported file: preserving the artwork’s proportions during export usually gives you more control, and you can select stretching only when its visual effect is intentional.

3. Prepare the composition before resizing
Resize decisions cannot recover details that were already placed too close to an edge. Keep the primary subject, faces, and any text inside a safe central area when the desktop may zoom or crop the image. This is especially important when one file will be used on displays with different ratios.

- Flatten or otherwise resolve layers only when your chosen export workflow requires a single raster image.
- Check that transparent areas have a deliberate appearance; a desktop may show its own background color through them.
- Reserve extra space around edge-aligned subjects if the same image may be used with both centered and zoomed presentation.
If the artwork contains a border, test the border at the target dimensions. A proportional resize can make a thin line uneven at some pixel sizes, while a crop can remove part of it entirely.
4. Resize and export with ImageMagick
ImageMagick’s command-line options cover proportional resizing, gravity, fixed-canvas extension, and JPEG quality. The following documented example is specifically for an image that must fit an 800×600 display:
magick input.jpg -resize 800x600 -background black -compose Copy -gravity center -extent 800x600 -quality 92 output.jpg
This command uses the 800×600 canvas and quality 92 from the ImageMagick documentation’s example. Those values demonstrate the syntax; they are not universal wallpaper recommendations. Replace the dimensions with the target display size and choose a quality setting appropriate to your own output requirements.

If the source and target ratios differ, the result is a fit-and-pad image: the complete artwork remains visible and the unused region receives the selected background color. Change black to another color if black does not suit the composition.

Crop with ratio geometry
To make the image cover a target and then remove the excess, use ImageMagick’s ratio geometry with a caret and set the final extent. For example:
magick input.jpg -resize '800x600^' -gravity center -extent 800x600 output.jpg
The caret requests a scale large enough to cover both target dimensions; -gravity center chooses the crop’s anchor, and -extent trims the result to the exact canvas. Adjust gravity when the important subject is not centered. Confirm the precise syntax against the ImageMagick version installed on your system, particularly if you are adapting the command for a scripted workflow.
Limit a resize with > and <
ImageMagick’s geometry modifiers can prevent an operation from affecting images on the wrong side of the target size. The > modifier limits the resize to images larger than the specified geometry; the < modifier limits it to images smaller than that geometry. This is useful in batch jobs where some source files are already at or below the intended dimensions. Test a batch on copies first, because a conditional resize does not by itself decide how an aspect-ratio mismatch should be cropped or padded.
Verify the generated dimensions
After exporting, inspect the output’s pixel dimensions with an image viewer or an image-information command available on your system. The file should match the intended canvas exactly when you have chosen a fixed-canvas workflow. Also open it at 100 percent zoom so you can see whether a crop removed a subject or whether a background color introduced an unwanted edge.
5. Choose an export format without treating one as universal
The cited documentation does not establish a wallpaper-specific winner between PNG and JPEG, nor does it provide a universal quality value. ImageMagick’s example writes a JPEG and sets quality to 92, but that demonstrates one command rather than a rule for every artwork or desktop.

Use the format required by your existing artwork pipeline or by a compatibility constraint you have verified on the target desktop. Whichever format you select, reopen the exported file rather than assuming that a successful command guarantees an acceptable visual result. Compare fine lines, gradients, text, and dark areas at the size at which the wallpaper will be displayed.
6. Apply and inspect the wallpaper in GNOME
Set a custom picture from Appearance
- Open GNOME’s Appearance settings.
- Choose Add Picture….
- Select the exported image.
- Choose a picture-position option and apply it.
GNOME Help also describes setting an image through Files or Image Viewer: open the image, use the application’s action for Set as Background, and then inspect the resulting desktop.
Understand GNOME’s documented positioning values
GNOME’s background documentation enumerates these picture-option values: none, wallpaper, centered, scaled, stretched, zoom, and spanned. The visible settings interface may present friendlier labels, but these values identify the available rendering choices in the system documentation.

Do not judge the export solely in an image editor. GNOME’s selected positioning can change the apparent crop, fit, or placement after the file has been applied.
7. Apply and inspect the wallpaper in KDE Plasma
In Plasma’s wallpaper settings, choose an image wallpaper type and set Positioning to Scaled, as shown in the Plasma Handbook. Then inspect the desktop at normal viewing distance and at 100 percent zoom in an image viewer.

If the subject looks clipped, return to the export decision rather than immediately changing unrelated display settings. A crop-to-fill file may need a different gravity, while a fit-and-pad file may simply need a background color that better matches the artwork.
8. A repeatable validation checklist
- Confirm that the exported width and height equal the intended display canvas.
- Open the file in an image viewer and check the focal subject, edges, text, and gradients.
- Apply it in the target desktop environment rather than relying only on the editor preview.
- Test the desktop’s likely presentation modes, especially scaled, zoomed, centered, or spanned modes.
- On multiple displays, check the join between monitors, the placement of the taskbar or panels, and any empty or duplicated region.
- If the result is wrong, identify whether the fault is dimensions, crop anchor, padding color, distortion, or desktop positioning before exporting again.
9. Troubleshoot common results
The wallpaper has bars or empty space
The image was fitted without cropping, so its ratio does not match the target. Keep the padding if preserving the whole composition is more important, or switch to a crop-to-fill export and choose a deliberate gravity.
The subject is cut off
A zoom or crop removed edge content. Re-export with a safer composition, change the crop anchor, or use fit-and-pad. Moving the subject inward in the source artwork is the most robust fix when the same image must serve several ratios.
The image looks distorted
Stretching changed the proportions. Re-export with an aspect-preserving resize and then use crop or padding to fill the canvas.

The image is soft
Check that the source was not enlarged excessively and that the exported dimensions match the display. Reopen the file at 100 percent to distinguish scaling softness from the desktop’s presentation mode.
The multi-monitor version does not line up
Recheck the combined canvas and the physical arrangement of the displays. GNOME’s spanned option is available, but the cited documentation does not specify every arrangement edge case, so alignment must be verified on the actual setup.
A batch command behaves differently on another machine
Compare the installed ImageMagick version and confirm the command syntax, especially geometry modifiers, gravity, composition, and extent. Keep a known-good source and inspect one output before processing a larger set.
10. Graphical editor or command line?
A graphical editor is useful when the artwork needs manual composition, subject repositioning, a custom background, or repeated visual judgment. The command line is useful when the target dimensions are known, the operation must be repeatable, or many images need the same treatment. Because no particular editor is specified here, use your application’s own documented export controls rather than assuming that menu names or resize behavior match another program.
A practical hybrid workflow is to compose and retouch the artwork graphically, export a high-resolution intermediate, and use ImageMagick for exact fixed-canvas variants. Keep the crop, padding color, target dimensions, and quality value recorded with each variant so that a later desktop change can be reproduced instead of guessed.
