How to resize and customize Samsung widgets on a Galaxy phone

On a Galaxy phone, add a widget from the Home screen editor: touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose an app and widget style, then tap Add. To resize one, touch and hold it and drag the resize handle that appears. To change its appearance or the information it shows, touch and hold it and tap Settings. The exact handle and menu labels depend on your Galaxy model, One UI version, carrier software, and the widget itself.

This guide covers the complete workflow, including One UI 7’s corner-drag gesture, older interfaces that show a center dot, widget stacks, locked Home screen layouts, and fixes for widgets that are missing or do not respond.

Before you start: what determines widget behavior

Galaxy widgets are controlled by three separate things: the Home screen software, the app that supplies the widget, and the current phone profile. Before troubleshooting, make sure the app is installed and available to the current user, the phone and app are reasonably up to date, and the Home screen is not locked. A work profile or administrator policy can also limit which widgets are offered.

There is no single Galaxy-wide widget editor. Samsung provides the placement, resize, move, stack, and remove commands, while each app decides which sizes, data sources, colors, transparency controls, and other settings it supports. Consequently, two widgets on the same phone can expose very different menus, and the same app can offer several designs with different capabilities.

Add a widget to a Galaxy Home screen

Widgets are placed on a Home screen panel and require enough open space for the selected layout. Samsung’s US instructions describe the following process in its Galaxy widget guide:

  1. Touch and hold an empty part of the Home screen until the editing controls appear.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Scroll to the app that supplies the widget and tap the app name.
  4. Choose one of the widget designs or sizes shown for that app. The number of choices varies by app.
  5. Tap Add. If the widget requests setup, complete those prompts.

If the chosen panel does not have enough room, move an existing icon or widget, choose another panel, or select a smaller widget option. Some apps offer several layouts while others provide only one fixed design. A widget can also be unavailable when the app, device, or managed work profile does not support it.

What happens after you tap Add

The widget is placed on a Home screen with suitable space. Some widgets immediately display information; others ask you to select an account, calendar, location, feed, or similar source. Complete that setup before judging whether the widget works. The choices shown in the picker are the choices supported by the current app and phone, not a complete list of every widget the app has ever offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place a widget on another panel

After tapping Add, drag the widget toward the left or right edge of the screen to move it to another Home screen panel, then release it in an open area. You can also move it later by touching and holding it and dragging it to a new position. If dragging does nothing, check the Home screen layout lock described below.

Resize a widget

Only widgets designed as resizable can change dimensions. Touch and hold the widget until an outline or resize control appears, then drag that control and release when the widget occupies the desired space.

Why the resize control may look different

Samsung documents two interface patterns. Its general US guide says that eligible widgets show a dot in the center of the outline and instructs you to hold and drag that dot. In the One UI 7 guide, Samsung describes long-pressing the widget and dragging a corner. These are version-specific descriptions rather than two steps that must be performed together.

What you see What to do What it indicates
A dot in the center of the widget outline Touch and hold the widget, then drag the dot The resize affordance described in Samsung’s general US instructions
A corner handle or highlighted corner Touch and hold the widget, then drag the corner The interaction described for One UI 7
No outline or handle Release the widget and check its settings, updates, and support status The widget may be fixed-size or currently unable to resize

Resize in small increments and watch the content as you drag. A calendar may reveal more entries at a taller size; a weather widget may show additional forecasts; a control widget may expose more buttons. The widget’s own design determines what appears at each size, so enlarging it does not guarantee additional information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resizing changes the space allocated on the Home screen, not the underlying app’s data. If a larger version still shows the same information, that is normal for a design whose content does not change with dimensions. Conversely, a smaller size may hide details without deleting them from the app.

If a widget will not resize

  • Confirm that you are touching the widget itself, not an icon or empty space beside it.
  • Look for the outline or handle after the long press. If none appears, that widget may not support resizing.
  • Try another layout offered by the same app. Some apps make one design resizable and another fixed.
  • Check whether the Home screen layout is locked. A lock can prevent changes even when the widget normally supports them.
  • Install pending app and system updates, then try again. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance notes that widget availability and behavior can change with software support.

Samsung’s US support wording is specific: “Widgets that can be resized will have a dot in the center of the outline.” That statement describes the interface in that guide; One UI 7 devices may instead present a corner handle.

Customize a widget’s appearance and information

Customization is widget-specific. Touch and hold the widget and tap Settings (the control may have a slightly different name on some versions). Change only the options presented for that widget, then leave the screen to save them.

Common controls

Samsung gives background color and transparency as examples. Depending on the app, you may also be able to select a light or dark treatment, choose which account or location supplies data, or decide what information is displayed. These controls are not universal: a widget may expose several choices, a single choice, or no additional settings at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Background color: choose one of the colors offered by the widget.
  • Transparency: make the widget more or less see-through when the control is available.
  • Displayed information: select categories, calendars, locations, feeds, or other data types supported by that app.
  • Widget-specific behavior: configure refresh, shortcuts, or account details only when the widget’s own settings provide those options.

If long-pressing shows no Settings command, the widget does not expose in-place customization on that software version. Check the app’s own settings for related choices, but do not expect every app setting to appear in its widget.

Make a widget fit the Home screen

Use the resize control first, then open the widget settings. This order helps you see how much information the widget can display at the available dimensions. A transparent widget can blend into a wallpaper but may reduce contrast; a larger widget can be easier to read while leaving less room for app icons. These are visual trade-offs controlled by the widget and your Home screen arrangement, not a universal Galaxy setting.

Move, stack, and remove widgets

Move a widget

  1. Touch and hold the widget.
  2. When it lifts from the grid, drag it to another position on the current panel or toward an edge to change panels.
  3. Release it when the destination space is highlighted.

A locked Home screen layout prevents this gesture. Turn off the lock before trying to rearrange items.

Create or use a widget stack

Supported Galaxy software lets compatible widgets share one Home screen space in a stack. Swipe through the existing stack to view its widgets. Samsung’s Canada instructions explain that the stack includes an add control; use that control to select another widget and include it in the same stack. Stack support and the available controls can vary by model and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A stack is useful when several widgets would otherwise consume separate panels, but it does not make unsupported widgets compatible. If the add control does not list a particular widget, that widget or the current software may not support placing it in the stack. Swipe through the stack when looking for a widget that appears to have disappeared before adding a second copy.

Remove a widget without deleting the app

  1. Touch and hold the widget.
  2. Tap Remove.

Removing the widget only removes its Home screen placement. Samsung states that it does not uninstall the app or delete the app’s data. You can add the widget again later if the app still supports it.

Unlock the Home screen when changes are blocked

If you cannot add, move, resize, or remove widgets, the Home screen layout may be locked. Samsung’s regional instructions use this path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Home screen.
  3. Turn off the option that locks the Home screen layout.

The wording and location can differ by One UI release or carrier software. You can also reach Home screen options by touching and holding an empty Home screen area and opening its settings, if that shortcut is offered on your phone. After unlocking, return to the Home screen and repeat the widget action.

Layout lock affects placement commands, so it can look like a resize failure even when the widget itself is resizable. Unlock only long enough to make the change if you prefer to keep the arrangement fixed afterward.

Fix a widget that is missing

A missing widget does not necessarily mean the app is gone. Samsung’s troubleshooting page, “Widgets disappear or do not work on Galaxy phone or tablet,” identifies several checks.

Check every Home screen panel and stack

Swipe across all Home screen panels. The widget may have been moved to another panel or placed inside a stack. Open each stack and swipe through its contents. If you previously removed the widget, add it again through Widgets.

Confirm that the app still supplies a widget

Open the Widgets picker and search for the app. Apps can change or withdraw widget support, and Samsung notes that unsupported widgets will not be listed. A phone can therefore have the app installed while offering no corresponding widget.

Check hidden apps, updates, and managed profiles

  • Look for the app in the app drawer’s hidden-app settings.
  • Install available updates for the app and the phone.
  • Verify that the app is available in the current user profile. A managed work profile or administrator policy can restrict widgets.
  • Check device conditions that the app requires, such as a signed-in account or an enabled service.

After making a change, open the Widgets picker again. The list reflects what the current software, app version, account, and profile support.

When the app is present but the picker is empty

Do not assume that reinstalling the app will restore a widget. First check whether the developer still supplies one for the installed app version and whether the phone’s software supports it. If the app is hidden, restricted to a work profile, awaiting an update, or missing a required account setup, the picker can omit the widget even though the app icon remains visible.

Fix a widget that appears but does not work

  1. Touch and hold the widget and review its Settings, if available. Correct account, location, permission, or display choices shown there.
  2. Open the app itself and confirm that it loads current information. If the app cannot connect or complete setup, its widget may also fail.
  3. Update the app and phone software.
  4. Restart the Galaxy phone and test the widget again.
  5. If the app works normally and is up to date but the widget still fails, contact the app developer. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to the developer when the problem is specific to that app’s widget.

Do not assume that resizing or removing and re-adding a widget will repair an app-side outage. Those actions change the Home screen placement; they cannot correct a service or account problem inside the app.

Why instructions differ on different Galaxy phones

Samsung cautions that screens and settings vary by provider, software version, and phone model. The same widget can therefore show a center-dot resize control on one release and a corner handle on another. A menu can also use a different label or omit an option that the widget does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Likely interface Best approach
General Samsung widget instructions Center dot on the outline for a resizable widget Long-press, then drag the visible dot
One UI 7 instructions Highlighted corner or corner handle Long-press, then drag the corner
Fixed or unsupported widget No resize affordance Choose another offered design or leave its size unchanged
Different carrier or regional software Different labels or menu placement Follow the control shown on that phone

Use the control visibly presented on your phone rather than forcing a gesture from an older tutorial. Samsung’s country-specific support pages, including the Canada widget guide and the Japan Home screen guide, reflect regional documentation and may not match every US model. Their common workflow remains: open the Home screen’s Widgets picker, choose an app and offered design, and use the widget’s own controls for changes.

Cover screen considerations on supported Z series phones

Some supported Galaxy Z series devices offer widget controls on the Cover screen in addition to the main Home screen. Cover screen availability, supported widgets, and editing gestures depend on the model and installed software. If a widget is available on the Cover screen, use that screen’s own edit controls; do not assume that a Home screen size or stack will transfer unchanged.

Quick decision guide

Your goal Action If it fails
Add a new widget Touch and hold empty Home screen space → Widgets → app → design → Add Check available space, layout lock, app support, and profile restrictions
Make a widget larger or smaller Touch and hold it → drag the visible dot or corner handle No handle usually means fixed-size or unsupported resizing
Change color, transparency, or data Touch and hold it → Settings Only options exposed by that widget can be changed
Rearrange a widget Touch and hold → drag to a new position or panel Turn off Home screen layout lock
Remove a widget Touch and hold → Remove The app remains installed; add the widget again from Widgets
Recover a missing or broken widget Check panels, stacks, app support, hidden apps, updates, and restart Contact the app developer if the app works but its widget still fails

What to expect from Samsung widget customization

Galaxy widgets are not governed by one universal editor. The Home screen supplies the placement, resize gesture, and removal commands, while each app determines its available sizes, appearance controls, data choices, and ongoing support. A successful change therefore depends on three conditions at once: the phone’s One UI interface, the widget’s capabilities, and whether the Home screen is unlocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I resize a Samsung widget?

Only widgets that expose a resize affordance can be resized. Long-press the widget and look for a center dot, corner handle, or outline. If none appears, the design may be fixed-size, unsupported on that phone, or blocked by the Home screen layout lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Galaxy show a corner handle instead of a center dot?

Samsung’s general US guide describes a center dot, while its One UI 7 guide describes dragging a corner. Use the affordance visible on your installed One UI version; the instructions are interface variations.

How do I change a widget’s color or transparency?

Long-press the widget and tap Settings. Color and transparency are available only when that particular widget provides those controls.

Does removing a widget uninstall its app?

No. Remove deletes the Home screen placement, not the app or its data. You can add the widget again from the Widgets picker while the app still supports it.

Why is an app installed but its widget missing?

The app may no longer provide a widget, the widget may be unsupported on that model or software version, or a hidden app, managed work profile, account requirement, or pending update may prevent it from appearing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when I cannot move or delete a widget?

Open Settings, tap Home screen, and turn off the Home screen layout lock. Labels and locations vary by One UI release and carrier software.

Can I put multiple widgets in one place?

On supported Galaxy software, compatible widgets can share a widget stack. Swipe through the stack and use its add control to select another available widget. Stack support varies by model and software.

What if the widget appears but shows stale or incorrect information?

Review the widget’s Settings, open the app to verify it works, install app and phone updates, and restart the phone. If the app works and is current but its widget still fails, contact the app developer.

The Bottom Line

Touch and hold empty Home screen space to add a widget, use the resize dot or corner handle your Galaxy shows, and open the widget’s Settings for appearance or data controls. If a command is unavailable, check layout lock, app support, software version, and profile restrictions before assuming the phone is faulty.
