For a standard YouTube video, resize your thumbnail to a 16:9 canvas at 3840 × 2160 pixels and export it as JPG or PNG. YouTube lists 640 pixels as the minimum width. In YouTube Studio, open Content, select the video, choose Upload file in the Thumbnail section, and save. Your account must be verified before YouTube will accept a custom thumbnail.
Shorts use a different 9:16 recommendation, while podcast playlist artwork is square (1:1). The steps below show how to choose the correct shape, resize without stretching, keep important text visible, meet file-size limits, and fix common upload problems.
Choose the correct YouTube thumbnail dimensions first
| Content type | Shape | Recommended or required guidance | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 16:9 | 3840 × 2160 pixels; minimum width 640 pixels | Use the custom-thumbnail upload in YouTube Studio |
| YouTube Short | 9:16 | At least 640 pixels high | A 16:9 custom image can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 image on some surfaces |
| Podcast playlist artwork | 1:1 | Square artwork | Podcast thumbnail upload limits differ on mobile |
These are YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail recommendations, documented in its custom thumbnail guidance. The often-seen 1280 × 720 figure belongs to YouTube’s 720p video-resolution ladder, not its current custom-thumbnail recommendation; see the video resolution and aspect-ratio guide.
Resize a standard video thumbnail step by step
1. Open the source image
Use any editor that lets you set a crop or canvas size and export JPG or PNG. YouTube does not require a particular application. Start with the highest-resolution original you have; enlarging a small image cannot restore detail that was never captured.

2. Set a 16:9 crop or canvas
Enter a 16:9 aspect ratio before entering pixel dimensions. You then have two legitimate choices:
- Crop to fill: enlarge the image until the entire 16:9 frame is filled, then remove excess edges. This avoids bars or empty margins but can cut off faces, logos or other details.
- Fit the whole image: scale the complete source inside a 16:9 canvas. This preserves every edge but leaves margins when the original is taller, wider or otherwise shaped differently. Fill those margins with a deliberate background rather than allowing important text to sit outside the safe area.
Do not stretch a non-16:9 source independently in width and height. Stretching changes faces, circles and logos. If your editor offers “lock aspect ratio,” keep it enabled while resizing.
3. Set the pixel dimensions
For a standard video, set the final canvas to 3840 × 2160 pixels where practical. Keep the width at or above YouTube’s 640-pixel minimum. If your source is smaller than the target, upscale only as much as necessary and inspect edges, small type and faces at 100% zoom.
A 16:9 ratio can be checked mathematically: divide width by height. 3840 ÷ 2160 equals 1.777…, the same ratio as 16 ÷ 9. If your editor asks for a single ratio, choose 16:9 rather than typing rounded dimensions that produce a different shape.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Protect the thumbnail’s readable area
- Keep the subject and headline away from the edges that may be obscured by interface overlays or cropped previews.
- Check the image at the size viewers will actually see it. Thin type and low-contrast details can disappear even when the exported file is large.
- Use a short, high-contrast message. Increasing pixel dimensions does not automatically make a cluttered design readable.
5. Export as JPG or PNG
Export the resized image as JPG or PNG, both of which YouTube lists as example supported formats. JPG usually produces a smaller file for photographic artwork; PNG can preserve crisp text and flat graphics but may be larger. Open the exported file once before uploading to confirm that the crop, colors and text survived the export.

6. Check the device-specific file limit
YouTube’s custom-thumbnail help page lists different limits for video thumbnails: 2 MB for mobile uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads. If a mobile upload is rejected for size, export a smaller JPG or reduce quality gradually while checking that text and faces remain clear. The same page lists a 10 MB mobile limit for podcast thumbnails.
7. Upload in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content in the left navigation.
- Select the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file.
- Select the exported JPG or PNG, then save the video details.
YouTube says changes can take time to appear. A verified account is required for custom thumbnails, and the image must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines. The guidance specifically identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as reasons a thumbnail may be rejected or lead to a strike. A daily thumbnail-upload limit may also vary by region or channel history.
Resize a thumbnail for a YouTube Short
Do not reuse the standard-video workflow unchanged for a Short. Build a 9:16 vertical canvas and make it at least 640 pixels high, following YouTube’s Shorts guidance. Place faces and text near the center so they remain visible in vertical previews.

The custom image remains on the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms. For predictable vertical presentation, create the 9:16 artwork first instead of relying on a landscape image.
Make the image 16:9 without stretching it
Use crop-to-fill when the edges are expendable
Crop-to-fill is best for a close-up subject, a landscape background or any composition where the outer edges do not carry essential information. Set the crop box to 16:9, reposition the subject, and then resize the cropped result to 3840 × 2160.

Use fit-with-margins when every edge matters
Fit-with-margins is safer for screenshots, diagrams, product photos and group images where cropping would remove necessary context. Put the complete image on a 16:9 canvas, then use a solid or blurred background to make the margins intentional. Verify that the final canvas, not just the inner image, is 3840 × 2160.
Use separate artwork for different formats
A single master file can contain the original subject, but export separate compositions for a 16:9 video, a 9:16 Short and 1:1 podcast artwork. Reframing the subject for each shape is more reliable than forcing one crop to serve every placement.

1280 × 720 is YouTube’s listed 720p video resolution, not the current custom-thumbnail recommendation. YouTube also documents a separate behavior for its Test & Compare feature: thumbnails below 1280 × 720 are downscaled to 854 × 480 for experiments. That experiment-specific rule does not replace the 3840 × 2160 custom-thumbnail guidance. Details are in YouTube’s A/B test titles and thumbnails help page.
Verify the finished file before uploading
- Shape: 16:9 for a standard video, 9:16 for a Short, or 1:1 for podcast playlist artwork.
- Dimensions: standard video target 3840 × 2160; standard-video width at least 640 pixels; Short height at least 640 pixels.
- Composition: no stretched faces, clipped logos or unreadable edge text.
- Format: exported as JPG or PNG.
- Size: within the 2 MB mobile or 50 MB desktop video-thumbnail limit, as applicable.
- Eligibility: the channel is verified and the artwork follows Community Guidelines.
Common resizing and upload problems
The image looks squeezed or stretched
Cause: width and height were changed independently. Fix: undo the transform, enable the editor’s locked aspect ratio, then crop or fit the source inside a 16:9 or 9:16 frame.
The subject is cut off
Cause: crop-to-fill removed source edges. Fix: reposition the crop, reduce the subject’s scale, or switch to fit-with-margins and design a background.

Mobile upload says the file is too large
Cause: the file exceeds the 2 MB mobile video-thumbnail limit. Fix: export JPG, reduce quality in small steps, remove unnecessary metadata if your editor offers that option, and inspect the result after each export. Desktop video uploads have a 50 MB limit.
The custom-thumbnail option is missing
Cause: the account may not be verified, or you may be editing a surface with different thumbnail rules. Fix: verify the account, return to the video’s Thumbnail section in YouTube Studio, and confirm whether you are editing a standard video, Short or podcast artwork.
The new thumbnail has not appeared yet
YouTube notes that thumbnail changes can take time to appear. Save the video details, allow propagation time, and check again from another view rather than repeatedly uploading the same file.

Cost, reliability and workflow notes
YouTube does not require a paid editor for resizing; the essential requirements are the correct canvas, a supported export and an eligible account. Keep an uncompressed master so you can produce alternate 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 versions without repeatedly degrading the same JPG. Export once from that master, inspect the actual uploaded dimensions and retain a copy of the exact file used for each video.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube require 3840 × 2160 for every custom thumbnail?
No. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 for standard video thumbnails and lists 640 pixels as the minimum width. The recommendation is different from a universal minimum.
Can I use one file for a video, a Short and podcast artwork?
You can, but the shapes differ: standard videos are 16:9, Shorts are 9:16 and podcast playlist artwork is 1:1. Separate exports let you reframe the subject instead of accepting awkward crops.
Does YouTube provide a preferred editing app?
The guidance does not endorse a particular editor. Any application that can crop or set a canvas, resize pixels and export JPG or PNG can follow the workflow.
